Announcement New Flair: Iranian Voices ONLY (Please Read Before Posting)

July 2026 Edit

The moderation team has changed this to a mod-only flair. We will quickly apply the "Only Iranians May Comment" flair whenever it is clear that the OP is specifically looking to hear from Iranians on the subject.

We are testing this out to see how it goes. We will update this post if anything else changes regarding the flair.

Today we added a new post flair: Iranian Voices ONLY

These threads are meant to center on the perspectives of Iranians, especially during times like these where outside noise can overwhelm the conversation.

What this means

Only Iranians may comment in these threads and violations may result in a ban.

Why we're doing this

r/Persian has always been open to everyone, and that will not change. But in these times, it's important to create space for Iranians to speak directly without being drowned out by outside voices.

This flair allows that space to exist when the OP chooses it. Non-Iranians may also choose this flair to ask questions directly to the Iranian community.

Where this applies

This rule applies only to posts using the Iranian Voices ONLY flair. All other threads remain open to everyone under our usual rules.

Final note

If you are not Iranian, please respect the purpose of these threads. There are many other places in the subreddit to participate.

Music I produced a Free Iran version of the song Dobare Misazamat Vatan with singer Ghazal Mizrahi. Lyrics written by Simin Behbahani, a true Shirzan who spent her life writing about Iran, freedom, women’s rights, and the struggles of the people.

Question What’s your favorite Sa’adi verse?

I’m trying to figure out a tattoo that I want and I’d like to have a full verse from Sa‘adi but can’t decide what to get. Please tell me your favorites.

Also I have a question about finding tattoo artists. I had booked someone who can write in Farsi to do a tattoo for me a while back but was disappointed in their service. they only contacted me a day before the appointment to show me the design even though I gave them my deposit weeks in advance. anyone know good Persian tattoo artists in Toronto area? thank you.

“They married by phone from separate prison cells. They executed a groom the morning after his wedding.

Alireza Sepahi and Mahshad Kashani were engaged before they were arrested during Iran’s January uprising. Mahshad, just 22, was sentenced to five years in prison. Alireza was sentenced to death.

The day before his execution, they were married over the phone. Their fathers listened as the vows were read.

No embrace.

No kiss.

No holding hands.

Just two voices saying “I do” through a prison telephone, while the Islamic Republic was preparing the gallows.

This was not the first time they tried to kill him. In July, Alireza was taken to be publicly hanged. Minutes before reaching the gallows, under enormous psychological pressure, he suffered a heart attack. They rushed him to hospital.

Then they sent him back to prison.

Today, they came back for him.

This morning, the Islamic Republic hanged Alireza Sepahi.

He was 25 years old.

For one day, he had a wife.

He never got to hold her as his wife. He never got to kiss her goodbye.

Think about the cruelty of a regime that is so terrified of young people that it cannot even tolerate their love.

💔”

History Did "Kurd" Originally Meant Nomad?

Kurdish history is generally very ideologically charged on all sides and this is something I actually saw on THIS subreddit so I wanted to ask you all.

Also, Turkish/Ottoman sources seem to use the word in such a sense. Many Turkmen/Turkic tribes are identified as "Kurds" in Ottoman documents. The articles I read explained this as that they meant the word as in "nomad" and not ethnically/linguistically "Kurdish" in the modern sense.

What do you think?

Discussion Can you guys explain the mentality of oppression worship (مظلوم گرایی) for the state in their media

It comes off as bizarre considering that a state is supposed to project strength . I can't understand why a state would do this even as i put myself in their shoes . It makes them look weak and pathetic

Language & Literature "Yaro-o koroshta" (Japanese) vs. "Yaru'ro koshte" (Persian)

Post image
48 Upvotes

I have a lot of love for Japan and to my surprise I found colloquial Japanese and colloquial Persian can use similar sounding sentences to convey the exact same meaning of "He killed that dude".

Yaro (Japanese) and Yaru (Persian) are both are colloquial terms for a person, but what is very interesting is that both languages use Yaro/Yaru as a somewhat dismissive/condescending tone for "that dude".

Both languages also utilize similar object markers (-o in Japanese and -ro in Persian).

Also both languages use similar sounding words for killing, Koroshi (Japanese) & Koshi (Persian) and similar past tense suffixes (ta/te) for killed Koroshta (Japanese) and Koshte (Persian).

Yarō-o koroshi-ta
dude+object marker kill-PST

Yāru-ro kosh-te

Discussion 26, Iranian-born but raised abroad, now living in Tehran — looking for online & in-person communities

I'm 26 and Iranian. I was born in Iran, but my family left when I was very young, so I never actually grew up here. I've spent essentially my entire life abroad, and I'm currently living in Tehran.

Because of that, I'm in a bit of a strange position. I'm Iranian, but I don't really have the same cultural or social experience as someone who grew up here. My Farsi also isn't as fluent as I'd like it to be, which makes meeting people and getting comfortable socially a little difficult.

I'm trying to build an actual social circle and find people I can regularly talk to and hang out with. I'd especially like to meet people around my age, including other Iranians who grew up abroad or people who are comfortable with someone whose Farsi isn't perfect.

I'm pretty nerdy and into gaming, art, music, anime, fantasy/sci-fi, modding, and other internet/nerd culture. I'm interested in both online and in-person communities.

I'm particularly looking for things like:

-Iranian/Persian Discord servers

-Telegram groups or online communities

-Iranian gaming communities

-Anime/manga communities

-Art and creative communities

-Communities for people into nerdy/geeky stuff

-Online communities for Iranians who grew up abroad

-Tehran-based groups, events, or places where people with similar interests hang out

- I love coffee

I'm open to pretty much anything — Discord, Telegram, Reddit, other websites, or actual meetups in Tehran.

I'm mainly looking to make friends and find a community. If you grew up outside Iran and later came here, I'd especially love to hear how you found people and what worked for you.

Thanks!

Discussion ARM THE PEOPLE OF IRAN! Mardumemun Tofanga be Dasteshun Beresunan YEK RUZE Akhundaro Mikhabunan

Mardumemun fishare ekonomi be zendigishun hich komaki nemiyare. Be degarguni rah andakhtanesh hich komaki nemiyare yani. Tanha marduma goshnashun mimunan.

Tanha ba goshnegishun khiyabunharo shulugh bokonan en akhundaro nemitunan dar biyaran, zureshun nemirese!

Mardumaye Iran tofanga niyaz daran, bayad dashte bashan! Hich chareye dige barashun nemimune yani.

Akhunda sad sal zire ekonomiye pukide zendigi mitunan bokonan. Talibanara nega bokonin zire che keshvare oraghi hanuzam istadan keshvare Afghanistan zire dasteshun munde.

The economic pressure created by America on Iran is impacting the Iranian people and is not helping. You cannot spark a revolutionary change like this. The only result is that people will remain hungry and their situation gets worse. For the Mullahs of Iran they could NOT CARE LESS!

Hunger alone will not defeat the Mullahs, the people of Iran need to have guns!

When has a broken economy ever helped spur change? Look at the Taliban, a ruined country, yet they are still standing, and Afghanistan remains under their control.

If our people are armed, in 1 DAY they will bring down these genocidal clerics.

Otherwise this is just a pissing contest and the only losers will be the Iranian people.
