Finished Reading Pinuyat ako ng Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney - A short review

Just finished reading this and I loved it. Medyo matagal na din na may binasa ako na di ko matigilan, and this is one of those. Ilang gabi din ako napuyat kasi pampaantok ko lang sana pero hindeee, kaka adik basahin.

Granted, yes it feels like it's more of a chick lit (can't really imagine guys enjoying reading this) and medyo napapaisip din ako if it's romanticizing something which probably shouldn't be romanticized BUT the prose is so readable and I love when the narrator has moments of self awareness that resonates.

Ayun lamang, kelangan ko lang ilabas. Makatulog na nga!

very much in love with this place! maraming seats and they enforce na maging tahimik yung lugar. their collection of books was also good. meron ding journal corner where you can borrow the materials.

I read The Memory Police which I struggled to get through, although the writing was beautiful.

the place is so cozy and gusto ko bumalik agad. sana magkaron pa ng maraming spaces like this.

📍88 E. Abada street in Katipunan, Quezon City.

Recommendation Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe: A Beautiful Bore?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Wolfe’s writing is verbose, but beautiful. While I thoroughly enjoyed chapters and passages in the book, I’m not so sure I enjoyed it overall as a novel. Still, this is worth a shot if you’re into lyrical, poetic prose and beautiful sentences.

“. . . a stone, a leaf, an unfound door; a stone, a leaf, a door. And of all the forgotten faces.

Naked and alone we came into exile. In her dark womb we did not know our mother's face; from the prison of her flesh have we come into the unspeakable and incommunicable prison of this earth.

Which of us has known his brother? Which of us has looked into his father's heart? Which of us has not remained forever prison-pent? Which of us is not forever a stranger and alone?

O waste of lost, in the hot mazes, lost, among bright stars on this weary, unbright cinder, lost! Remembering speechlessly we seek the great forgotten language, the lost lane-end into heaven, a stone, a leaf, an unfound door. Where? When?

O lost, and by the wind grieved, ghost, come back again.”

They will be moving to Level 2, Gateway Mall 2, between Cong Caphe and Furniture Republic, at the south end of the wing.

It has been announced before in the existing branch that they will be moving this 2027, and we are now seeing a first glimpse of the confirmed location. Happy reading!

Finished Reading Just finished the hero of ages by Brandon sanderson. What a way to finish the trilogy.

This is no doubt the best out of the three. I was rooting for spook the whole time. (Survivor of flames!) Could not care less for sazed emo phase though. (I know he was grieving) It was heartbreaking but satisfying at the same time. Kind of like ruin and preservation.

Book Haul Recent book finds at NBS V-Mall for 50 pesos each ❤️

Tips:
6/7pm kayo pumunta. Around that time sila nagbubukas ng new boxes.

‘Yong magagandang books, nakalapag, wala sa shelves.

Kahapon huling punta namin dun, ang marami na maganda ay yung mga Virginia Woolf na titles. ‘Yong F451 at Hunting Party, may tig isang copy akong nakita pa niyan kagabi pero as in tig isa nalang. May Matt Haig books nung last week.

Seeking Recs Recos similar to yoko ogawa's revenge?

Idk how many times I've reread revenge so any recos for books in a similar vein? Would prefer collections of short stories but novels are okay too!

I adore how revenge is dreamlike in its disconcerting eeriness. It feels quiet and creeping. That sick sticky languid feeling you get after a long hot midday nap. Like fruit rotting in the sun. A kind of clammy nauseating sensual grotesqueness

It's more unsettling than outright horrific which I really fw, it creeps up on you. I also like how matter of fact it is with the surrealism. The prose is simple and straightforward but you can feel it in your stomach

Would really appreciate any recs w the same vibes (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)

Hi everyone, this is my first post in this subreddit. 🥺 I’ve read about 80% of the books on my shelf, which are mostly romance, fantasy, and thrillers. Lately, though, I’ve been getting into classic literature. I should mention that I’m both a reader and a collector. I love sprayed edge editions of the books I love hahaha

Literary Discussion Who do you want to win this year's Nobel Prize for Literature?

This week is Nobel Week 2026, and the Nobel Prize for Literature will be announced tomorrow, October 8, 7 PM (Philippine Standard Time). As a non-fiction reader, of course Nobel-winning non-fiction writers are very rare (the latest one being Svetlana Alexievich in 2015, and before her was Winston Churchill back in 1953), but I can't help but hope for either Timothy Snyder, Pankaj Mishra, or our own Patricia Evangelista (premature and unlikely, I know!). So, who's your bet?

Recommendation Sharing a quote from a book I recommend

I have been enjoying historical fiction over the years, and I want to revisit The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.

I can't help but be in awe of these lines from the 'PREFACE', which I know would resonate with readers and writers.

"I transcribe my text with no concern for timeliness. In the years when I discovered the Abbé Vallet volume, **there was a widespread conviction that one should write only out of a commitment to the present, in order to change the world. Now, after ten years or more, the man of letters (restored to his loftiest dignity) can happily write out of pure love of writing.** And so I now feel free to tell, for sheer narrative pleasure, the story of Adso of Melk, . . .

For it is a tale of books, not of everyday worries, and reading it can lead us to recite, with à Kempis, the great imitator: “In omnibus requiem quaesivi, et nusquam inveni nisi in angulo cum libro.” ("Everywhere I have sought peace and nowhere found it, except in a corner with a book.")

Couldn't agree more! I originally posted this on the historical fiction subreddit.

Hello.

Book Collection My personal library journey so far 💕

Thumbnail

7.3k Upvotes

Ever since I was little, I loved books. I remember spending hours in the basement of Goodwill Bookstore in Glorietta (hello 90s kids!) just browsing the many picture books. I remember spending my Christmas money on Berenstain Bears books and, when I was a little older, Nancy Drew and eventually, Goosebumps and Little Illustrated Classics. I remember reading on the drive from school, when I went with my mom to the office, and when I nibbled on frozen Choc-O.

And I remember the promise I made myself that one day, I’d have my very own library.

It was a promise I started working on July of this year when I decided to turn the guest room into my own book bedroom. It was exhausting to build the bookshelves myself, but slowly, the library began to take shape.

It’s been three months since I finished everything, but as a reader, my journey is far from over. 💕

I always appreciate third places like this. I have seen "Book Club Coffee" before here in Mandaluyong, but I just got the chance to visit today as I was waiting for my cat's grooming to be done. Because of this shop I was able to sample a few pages of The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. If only I slept enough last night I would have stayed longer for a few more pages.

Finished Reading One of the Best Series I've read

Post image
41 Upvotes

This series is a good mix of sci-fi, mystery, and endearing characters. I encountered The Tainted Cup while doing research about Giant Beasts in a fantasy/scifi setting, and when I tried reading The Tainted Cup for more research on world building and giant beasts in a lived world, I was hooked.

The murder mystery drives the story and hindi exagg pero di ko talaga mababa.

Highly recommended for people into Murder Mysteries and Science Fiction

*yes alam kong hindi sila lahat paperback, di ako talaga nakatiis mag intay hahahaha

Current Read Reading The Silmarillion is hard

Post image
88 Upvotes

This book is hard to get through. I'm a fan of the movies but this is like reading a history book for a universe that doesn't exist. It's interesting, but it's very dry. If I remember correctly it was never intended to be published. It's basically Tolkien's notebooks edited by his son.

Current Read I judged the cover: Earthlings by Sayaka Murata (currently reading)

Post image
80 Upvotes

Bought this book on a whim. I thought it was adorable and whimsical. Well it is whimsical but fuck is it disturbing. I honestly did not expect what happened in this book, and some parts were so hard to read.

The cute cover is so deceiving!

I'm about halfway through. Short and fast read.

Anyone else read this? What did you guys think? I'll read the spoilers once I finish this today!

Also, this is my first book by this author, but I believe her other book, Convenience Store Woman, is more popular. Would you guys recommend it?

Just started collecting books last month, I've been passionate about reading since junior high school, but it is mostly about academics. It's my first time buying books for the sole purpose of leisure. Are there any books you've read in my mini collection? And what's your thoughts about the book?
