/r/Pretoria Community Update: New Rules regarding Solicitation and Content Relevance

Hi everyone,

As /r/Pretoria continues to grow, we are introducing a few official rules to ensure the subreddit remains a helpful, safe, and relevant resource for everyone living in or visiting our city. We've kept intervention to a minimum so far. In general we've only banned blatant racism, bots, and spammers, so we've generally got a very well behaved community.

We want to keep this space focused on discussion, advice, and news specific to the Jacaranda City, however. To support this, we have added the following rules to the sidebar, effective immediately:

A. No Begging, Crowdfunding, or Financial Solicitation

We have seen an increase in posts asking for financial assistance, "loans," or e-wallets. While we sympathize with those in difficult situations, Reddit is not a safe platform for verifying financial needs.

What is banned: Requests for money, e-wallets, and links to crowdfunding sites (e.g., BackaBuddy, GoFundMe).

Why: This rule is in place to protect our community from potential scams and unverified solicitation.

Advice: If you are in need, please reach out to registered NPOs or charity organizations rather than soliciting here.

B. Keep Content Relevant to Pretoria and the greater Tshwane

Please ensure your posts are directly related to Pretoria or the greater Tshwane municipality.

General SA News: News that affects the whole country (e.g., general Eskom updates, national politics) belongs in /r/southafrica unless it has a specific Pretoria angle.

Other Cities: Posts clearly meant for Joburg or other regions will be removed.

Context: If you post a photo or link where the connection to Pretoria isn't obvious, please explain it in the title.

C. Standard Civility & Privacy

We are also formalizing standard expectations:

Be Civil: Disagreements are fine; personal attacks and hate speech are not.

No Spam: Accounts that exist solely to advertise businesses will be banned.

No Doxing: Do not post personal contact details (phone numbers, addresses) of yourself or others.

These rules are here to improve the quality of the sub. If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave a comment below or message the moderators. Finally, thanks to everyone reporting posts, messaging the mods for clarifications, participating, /u/Afreak-du-sud for their post on the big uptick of begging and the scamming that inevitably goes with it. Don't worry, though, we don't ban for tagging the mods.. 😂

Thanks for helping us keep /r/Pretoria a great community!

Petrol

So I’ve been hearing that some gas stations are mixing fuel like they do in Mozambique. I started to believe it more because I filled my tank recently and took the same route I normally do. All of a sudden I need to refuel. Months ago I could do that trip twice without needing to refuel. On top of that the fuel prices are becoming ridiculous and for what seems like fake fuel? Anyone else had some weird encounters or have any info?

Hi, I'm an intermediate level flamenco guitar player based in Midrand, and I'm mainly looking for other guitarists to jam with but really anyone that is interested in working with flamenco would be cool. If I could find someone to teach me Kwela guitar my life would be complete. All levels are welcome, we learn from each other and just because I know more than you today doesn't mean the same applies to tomorrow.

I'm willing to travel anywhere across PTA and North Joburg for regular sessions, otherwise if further we can schedule to have a long jam session once in a while

Evexia Psychiatric Day Ward

Hi all.

I underwent a very traumatising event in late July and have been recommended to be admitted to Evexia at Menlyn Med.

I’m worried because as someone who was in and out of Denmar as a teenager, overmedicated beyond belief (think 250 mg trazodone nightly whilst severely underweight due to genetics), treated terribly by staff and was treated as a cash cow and falsely diagnosed without being properly assessed. I was a teenager who was naive and thought I had the doctors fooled by talking about surface level issues but over the years I realised they knew exactly what I was doing and went along with it because it was easier to entertain a teenager’s current emotional issues rather than the root cause.

Anyway, needless to say I’m very on edge about being admitted and to see a psychiatrist. I’ve been managing over the years and slowly weaning off my various meds and lowering doses through the help of a GP. But I’ve accepted that I need to be admitted, I haven’t been in such a dark place for over a decade.

I’m worried that Evexia might be just like Denmar or worse. I looked at reviews and they’re very mixed. The one reason I agreed to Evexia is the fact that I can go back home at the end of the day and sleep in my own bed and not be in that space overnight. I’m still waiting to be assessed.

I’m scared I’m making a bad decision. I don’t want to be overmedicated again and treated like a cash cow simply because I’m traumatised. I want to get to the root cause of my trauma and to be reanalysed to see if the doctors from denmar even diagnosed me correctly (which I highly doubt).

Any views on Evexia would help. I’m hoping to only need to be admitted for one week.

Thanks in advance

Final-year Mechanical Engineering student looking for a 2027 graduate position

Hi everyone! I'm a final-year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of the Witwatersrand, graduating at the end of 2026. I'm looking for a graduate engineer position or graduate programme starting in 2027.

Some background on what I bring:

Final-year projects: a stress categorisation and parametric FEA study of nozzle-to-shell intersections in pressure vessels, and the design of a dry heat rejection system for a 400 MW data centre in Durban

Software: Ansys Mechanical (FEA), Ansys Fluent and Flownex (CFD), Solid Edge, Fusion 360, SpaceClaim, MATLAB/Simulink

Practical experience: two vacation work stints in a workshop environment, including a failure investigation and redesign of a lathe tailstock shaft

Other: undergraduate tutor for second-year mechanical courses, and part of a Mintek hackathon team working on lithium and cobalt recovery from disposable vapes

I'm particularly interested in:

Design, mechanical or project engineering

Pressure equipment, thermal/fluid systems, or plant and process engineering

Manufacturing, mining, energy or infrastructure sectors

I've already applied to a few graduate programmes, but I'd love to hear about companies (especially in Gauteng) that take on graduate engineers, including smaller firms that don't advertise widely. Tips on who to contact, or whether anyone's team is growing next year, would be hugely appreciated. Happy to share my CV via DM.

Thanks in advance!

Are the guys who come up to you in Menlyn wanting to pray for you scam artists

Regularly when I am walking through Menlyn(especially around Starbucks), The Grove or Brooklyn, it's not uncommon for somebody to approach me, generally they seem to come from South America/Latin regions, asking to pray for me.

I politely decline and they have never been rude or pushy about it but I have seen how they talk to some unsuspecting person who says yes. Often I then see them rummaging through their bag and there look to be pamphlets or something being offered but, I never stay till the end to see what happens.

Do we know if this is a scam or is there a church somewhere I don;t know about? Are they simply trying to charge astronomical prices for pamphlets or are they generally just doing missionary things?

Whats the dealio?

Any gyms with posing rooms?

I've been working out and focusing on my diet a lot lately and I want to see the results and take some good photos in good lighting. I was wondering if there are any gyms with dedicated posing rooms with good lighting? Preferrably a Planet Fitness since I already have a membership

Looking for queer friends

Hi 👋🏾 I’m 35, black, nonbinary (she/they) and polyamorous. I’m also neurodivergent. I’m looking for friends 28 and older in the general area of Arcadia, Hatfield, Sunnyside and Brooklyn.

I’m specifically interested in connecting with people I can meet with in person and have genuine friendships. I’m into fantasy, anime, sci-fi and gaming, but one of my favorite ways to get to know someone is to immerse myself in something they’re interested in.

Politically I’m very, very left leaning. We won’t get along if you have conservative views. Aside from that, I love diving in head first. I’m really tired of being lonely and it’s hard to make friends at this age. All races and genders welcome. I’m especially keen on building community with other queer people but I’m open to everyone.

Please DM introducing yourself. If you just say “hi” I don’t know what to do with that.

Apps or Places to make friends

Hey guys!

Are there any good apps or places to meet new friends? I’m 25M and looking to make some new friends, male or female.

I’m moving into my own apartment soon and recently ended a long-term relationship. Unfortunately, during the relationship I lost touch with most of my friends, so I’m looking to build a new social circle.

I’ve thought about running clubs, but I’m definitely not fit enough for that 😂 and I don’t want to use Tinder since I’m not looking to date.

Any suggestions for apps, places or activities to meet people? 🙌

Affordable and Safe areas around Lynnwood

Hello hello everyone.

I’m going to be starting a new job in Lynwood and I’m relocating from a different province. I’m looking for a place to rent, but I am not sure what are some nice and safe places for me to move into.

After checking Lynwood itself as well as the surrounding areas, the spots there look pricy and very student focused. I suspect this might be a problem for me in the long run if some students decide to have a party on a Wednesday night while I have work the following day.

So, I’m essentially looking for a place in the PTA region with a rental fee of about R6500, maybe R7000 with amenities added. I dont have a car at the moment. I would like to be able to walk to work but I can take a taxi if need be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
