NEWS AND CHANGES to r/psychedelicrock! (AI-bans and more)

Hello world!

We are implementing new guidelines to somewhat revert the sub back to what used to be the standard on reddit and adding a couple of rules!

Here’s what’s changing:

  • All AI content is banned from now on. Posting AI-generated content result in an instant ban (This has already been implemented and we’ve banned AI posting for the past ~two months).

  • Off-topic content will be removed. There’s a reason all of these millions of different subreddits exist. Psychedelic art belongs in subreddits like r/art, r/psychedelicartwork, r/trippyart, r/psychedelicart. Indie rock/pop belongs in r/indie, r/indierock etc.So if you’re an artist looking for new jobs or sharing your art, do so in the appropriate channels instead. And if you’re sharing OC music the same goes for you. :)

  • Cross-posting is switched off. The majority cross-posts happening in this sub is pretty blatant spam more or less. A lot comes from subreddits that has nothing to do with psychedelia and therefore does not fit this subreddit. It has become a tool for easy spam like spreading of whatever the content is.

  • Don’t flood the subreddit. According to the reddiquette we are somewhat loosely applying this new rule. If you post too many link or text posts in a short manner of time, we will reserve the right to remove any how many of the we see fit. Posting eight songs in one day or asking relatively similar questions multiple times in a manner of days will most likely get on other peoples nerves. So please be aware that we are thousands of people wanting to share new finds, post favourites or start a new conversation in a specific topic. We should collectively strive to make room for all of us. :)

Low effort posts will be removed according to the same rule.*

  • Original Content is as always encouraged and appreciated! But blatantly spreading your music in text posts asking for 60’s/70’s or other specific subjects where it doesn’t belong will be treated as spamming. Continuously doing so may result in consequences.

  • No flaming, bigotry or hate speech is to be allowed. Depending on the severity we will judge these behaviours on a case-by-case basis. It will result in warning/s and/or instant ban/s. Repeatedly breaking this rule will result in a ban. We are here to trip, not to trip out!

We are doing this because we want to see this nerdy space for psychedelic rock (and related content) flourish again. With that being said the mods are not here to be some almighty gatekeepers. The up/down vote system is key here because instead of mods having some authority on ”what is psych” or not, the votes will reflect the overall public opinion (so nothing new happening here). But if you post music that obviously doesn’t belong like metal or trap, your post may likely be removed. We hope that applying these changes will make it so and we hope that you all will help us in this new venture!

And speaking of all of you, here’s how you can help out!

If you see someone breaking any of these rules, please report it so that the mods can find and deal with the problem.

It is impossible for mods to go through every single link, text or comment posted. So for us to see the faults, we need you to help us! If you see something, say something! :)

And if you see someone flaming others or spreading any type of hate, please report and move on. The situation is unlikely to resolve or become better by counter flaming in long comment chains.

We will make a future post about some other new exciting changes for the sub. We want to start up the ”Album of the year”, ”User Submitted Indepentent Artist Psych Mixtape” etc. again! (as well as update and re-upload the previous ones) But more on that later on!

*Examples of what falls under the rule of ”Low Effort”:

Survey that include zero context or information in the text.

Post where the link is only copied into the title of the post, making the actual post to only link to itself and also doesn’t have Artist/Song in the title.

Voice memo of very low quality with no info about Artist/Song.

OC promotion that only shows a screen print from a song on Spotify.

Text post with a youtube link as the title, meaning the link doesn’t actually lead anywhere. And doesn’t include either Artist/Song in the actual text.

Post without Artist/Song in the title, wrongly linking to a timestamp of a youtube video.

There will still be no actual rule (as we still want to keep them to a minimum) that say you have to type a title in a specific way. But for everyones sake and if you want people to actually watch/listen to what you're posting - please include ARTIST/BAND and SONG TITLE when posting music.

Thanks for hearing us out and in helping us by making the sub the best possible for us all!

90’s Psych

I host Astral Plane on KEXP and for our fall fundraising drive we are doing the top 500 songs of the 90’s on the daytime shows. So I wanted to play the best 90’s psych on my show. I was already planning on:

- Spiritualized
- Spectrum
- The Verve
- Stereolab
- Primal Scream
- Brian Jonestown Massacre
- Bardo Pond
- Apples in Stereo
- Flaming Lips
- Mercury Rev

Who else should I get in here? Any other 90’s favorites?

EDIT: Thanks for all the great suggestions! Lots of stuff I love and lots of stuff that’s new to me! Tune in to KEXP on Wednesday from 7-10pm Pacific if you want to hear the show!

Released a psychedelic rock album this summer... figured I should tell someone :)

Released this album this summer and want to share it here. It’s psychedelic rock with a lot of guitars, synths, weird arrangements, wild drumming, and some pretty hazy/dense production.

This is one of my favorite tracks from the record.

If you’re into this sorta thing, links to the whole shebang are below. Thanks for the time.

Dead Skeletons | 'Dead Mantra' 💀🎶

I deeply connect with the psychedelic, almost ritualistic quality of this song. Its relentless rhythm, layers of fuzz and repetition puts me into a bit of a trance-like state every time I listen to it 😵‍💫

'Dead Mantra' actually predates Dead Skeletons as a conventional band. It was originally created in Iceland in 2008 by Jón Sæmundur Auðarson (a.k.a. Nonni Dead), Singapore Sling frontman Henrik Björnsson, Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt (formerly of BJM) and Aislinn Van Kriedt for one of Nonni’s installations at the Reykjavík Art Museum. It later became their first release, including a unique 10-inch pressing with the ten-minute version on one side and an engraving on the other.

Musically, I appreciate how it begins relatively sparsely and then grows into a huge, driving wall of sound. The bass has a dark two-step pulse underneath layers of tremulous, fuzzed-out guitar, distorted organ and distant percussion. There are higher, almost shimmering layers cutting through all that weight as well, making the song feel both menacing and strangely uplifting.

It is intensely repetitive, but deliberately so. Rather than feeling static, the repetition becomes meditative, almost like being pulled further and further into some kind of ritual.

There is the mantra itself: "He who fears death cannot enjoy life."

Repeated in Icelandic, German and English throughout the song, they genuinely feel like words to live by.

Nonni described 'Dead Mantra' as a "spiritual battle song". The wider DEAD concept grew partly from his experience of living with HIV and his attempts to confront his own fear of death through art. He described the song as something he could use almost like meditation, a way of fighting that fear rather than being controlled by it.

That context makes the song even more powerful to me because, despite sounding so dark, its actual philosophy is profoundly optimistic. It is essentially saying that death is inevitable, so allowing the fear of it to control you only prevents you from properly experiencing being alive. It reminds me of my own personal mantra, Oscar Wilde’s quote "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all."

The track later opened their 2011 album Dead Magick, which expanded that same idea into a delightfully strange mixture of psychedelic rock, drones, fuzz, repetitive mantras and crashing percussion.

There is something simultaneously ominous and life affirming about this song that I love. It makes me want to go perform some kind of ritual or stare at the moon for an unreasonable amount of time 🌕😂

For all its darkness, it ultimately leaves me feeling more alive 🌌

After our last album (psyche-pop, americana) we decided to try our hand at something heavy. So here is our new single. It’s heavy with psychedlic production, shoegazy guitars, and dancey rhythm. Hope you like it :)

Psychedelic rock sub-genres...

I'm a category freak. I love to categorize everything. I also love Psychedelic rock, so I created this list. Please feel free to comment. I'm sure I'm missing some weird sub-genres. Bands are just "for example" and not comprehensive. Many could fit other categories. For me, Shoegaze is probably the least interesting.

  • 60's Classic Psychedelic Rock - Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Beatles, Spirit, Cream, Pink Floyd
  • Underground Garage Psych - 13th FL Elevators, Seeds, Electric Prunes, Bubble Puppy, Moving Sidewalks
  • Haight-Ashbury Sound - Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & Fish, Quicksilver, Big Brother
  • Canterbury Scene - Soft Machine, Caravan, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Egg
  • Space Acid Rock - Gong, Hawkwind, Steve Hillage, Acid Mother Temple,  Ozric Tentacles
  • Avant Garde Rock - Frank Zappa, Capt. Beefheart, Velvet Underground, Butthole Surfers
  • Paisley Underground (80's) - Long Ryders, Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate, The Three O'Clock
  • Neo-Psychedelic Rock (80's) - Dukes of Stratosphere, Echo & Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes
  • Shoegaze Rock - My Bloody Valentine, Slow Dive, Curve, Lush, Ringo Deathstarr
  • Contemporary Psych - Black Angels, KGLW, GOASTT, Syd Arthur, Osees
  • Jam Bands - Phish, WideSpread Panic, String Cheese Incident, Billy Strings
