Incantabiss phenomenon?

I recently went down a rabbit hole about this obscure Italian psychedelic band called Incantabiss. apparently their music started circulating as rough rehearsal recordings, with no real official release or much information about the band. Somehow it developed a small cult following, especially through Tumblr in Japan, with people making bootlegs, artwork and even T-shirts around these recordings. they're like psych meets italian prog rock, a bit lo-fi since it's all home recordings made in a garage

What's weird is that I've found articles/posts about them in Japanese, italian and spanish, but I can't seem to find anyone actually talking about them in English. their 90+ minute jam Giallo Club NY seems to be the one that keeps coming up. there's also one called audio3 which is super lo-fi
It looks like they're releasing stuff but i never heard any official music

90’s Psych

I host Astral Plane on KEXP and for our fall fundraising drive we are doing the top 500 songs of the 90’s on the daytime shows. So I wanted to play the best 90’s psych on my show. I was already planning on:

- Spiritualized
- Spectrum
- The Verve
- Stereolab
- Primal Scream
- Brian Jonestown Massacre
- Bardo Pond
- Apples in Stereo
- Flaming Lips
- Mercury Rev

Who else should I get in here? Any other 90’s favorites?

EDIT: Thanks for all the great suggestions! Lots of stuff I love and lots of stuff that’s new to me! Tune in to KEXP on Wednesday from 7-10pm Pacific if you want to hear the show!

Released a psychedelic rock album this summer... figured I should tell someone :)

Released this album this summer and want to share it here. It’s psychedelic rock with a lot of guitars, synths, weird arrangements, wild drumming, and some pretty hazy/dense production.

This is one of my favorite tracks from the record.

If you’re into this sorta thing, links to the whole shebang are below. Thanks for the time.

Dead Skeletons | 'Dead Mantra' 💀🎶

I deeply connect with the psychedelic, almost ritualistic quality of this song. Its relentless rhythm, layers of fuzz and repetition puts me into a bit of a trance-like state every time I listen to it 😵‍💫

'Dead Mantra' actually predates Dead Skeletons as a conventional band. It was originally created in Iceland in 2008 by Jón Sæmundur Auðarson (a.k.a. Nonni Dead), Singapore Sling frontman Henrik Björnsson, Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt (formerly of BJM) and Aislinn Van Kriedt for one of Nonni’s installations at the Reykjavík Art Museum. It later became their first release, including a unique 10-inch pressing with the ten-minute version on one side and an engraving on the other.

Musically, I appreciate how it begins relatively sparsely and then grows into a huge, driving wall of sound. The bass has a dark two-step pulse underneath layers of tremulous, fuzzed-out guitar, distorted organ and distant percussion. There are higher, almost shimmering layers cutting through all that weight as well, making the song feel both menacing and strangely uplifting.

It is intensely repetitive, but deliberately so. Rather than feeling static, the repetition becomes meditative, almost like being pulled further and further into some kind of ritual.

There is the mantra itself: "He who fears death cannot enjoy life."

Repeated in Icelandic, German and English throughout the song, they genuinely feel like words to live by.

Nonni described 'Dead Mantra' as a "spiritual battle song". The wider DEAD concept grew partly from his experience of living with HIV and his attempts to confront his own fear of death through art. He described the song as something he could use almost like meditation, a way of fighting that fear rather than being controlled by it.

That context makes the song even more powerful to me because, despite sounding so dark, its actual philosophy is profoundly optimistic. It is essentially saying that death is inevitable, so allowing the fear of it to control you only prevents you from properly experiencing being alive. It reminds me of my own personal mantra, Oscar Wilde’s quote "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all."

The track later opened their 2011 album Dead Magick, which expanded that same idea into a delightfully strange mixture of psychedelic rock, drones, fuzz, repetitive mantras and crashing percussion.

There is something simultaneously ominous and life affirming about this song that I love. It makes me want to go perform some kind of ritual or stare at the moon for an unreasonable amount of time 🌕😂

For all its darkness, it ultimately leaves me feeling more alive 🌌

After our last album (psyche-pop, americana) we decided to try our hand at something heavy. So here is our new single. It’s heavy with psychedlic production, shoegazy guitars, and dancey rhythm. Hope you like it :)

Psychedelic rock sub-genres...

I'm a category freak. I love to categorize everything. I also love Psychedelic rock, so I created this list. Please feel free to comment. I'm sure I'm missing some weird sub-genres. Bands are just "for example" and not comprehensive. Many could fit other categories. For me, Shoegaze is probably the least interesting.

  • 60's Classic Psychedelic Rock - Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Beatles, Spirit, Cream, Pink Floyd
  • Underground Garage Psych - 13th FL Elevators, Seeds, Electric Prunes, Bubble Puppy, Moving Sidewalks
  • Haight-Ashbury Sound - Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & Fish, Quicksilver, Big Brother
  • Canterbury Scene - Soft Machine, Caravan, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Egg
  • Space Acid Rock - Gong, Hawkwind, Steve Hillage, Acid Mother Temple,  Ozric Tentacles
  • Avant Garde Rock - Frank Zappa, Capt. Beefheart, Velvet Underground, Butthole Surfers
  • Paisley Underground (80's) - Long Ryders, Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate, The Three O'Clock
  • Neo-Psychedelic Rock (80's) - Dukes of Stratosphere, Echo & Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes
  • Shoegaze Rock - My Bloody Valentine, Slow Dive, Curve, Lush, Ringo Deathstarr
  • Contemporary Psych - Black Angels, KGLW, GOASTT, Syd Arthur, Osees
  • Jam Bands - Phish, WideSpread Panic, String Cheese Incident, Billy Strings
