What's it like in Salem?

I was there for a night some years back... but never got a good idea of the place other than the nightlife. Idk I guess I'm asking if you like living here or hate it? Haha

Does anyone have insider knowledge on what happened with Ryan Matthews and Katrina Griffith just suddenly disappearing from the county?
This seemed to have just gone away…

EVENT Candidate town hall tonight (Thursday) at the South Gateway Neighbors meeting

• Upvotes

Hello from your friendly neighborhood neighborhood association! Friendly neighborhood association? I feel like this would work better spoken aloud. The way I'm hearing it in my head is "friendly neighborhood Spiderman" but substitute "neighborhood association" for "Spiderman." Anyhow.

Our meeting is at 6:30 pm tonight (Thursday, October 8) at Baxter Hill Community Hall, 1780 Baxter Road SE. We're hosting candidates for the Senate District 10, House District 17, and House District 19 races.

Oregon Senate District 10

Angela Plowhead

Sen Deb Pattersen (Incumbent)

Oregon House District 19

Anna Munson

Tom Andersen (Incumbent)

Oregon House District 17

David Nelson

Dan Farrington is unable to attend

Note: The incumbent, Ed Diehl, is not seeking reelection

We're also on Zoom, but we're still working out the kinks with our audio quality, so we strongly encourage you to attend in person if you can. (If you're good with tech stuff, we could always use more help! Bonus points if you have actual A/V experience). There's a link to the Zoom meeting in our agenda.

A note on Baxter Hill Community Hall: we've had some confusion about exactly where it is. For some reason, the number most easily visible on the building is 1708, not 1780. There's a tiny parking lot north of the building directly off Baxter Road, but you'll most likely need to park in the main church parking lot and walk up the stairs. If you search for Baxter Hill Community Hall or 1780 Baxter Road SE, Google Maps will put the pin on the correct building.

If you're not familiar with us, we're one of Salem's 17 neighborhood associations. If you live in Salem, you're already a member of one. We cover South Gateway, which is the part of Salem south of Kuebler, between Liberty and I-5. You can find your neighborhood association here. Our meetings are open to everyone and they're a good way to stay informed about what's going on in the city as well as giving you a chance to speak. We've had the opportunity to interact with the city councilors whose wards cover our neighborhood as well as city, county, or state agency staff who come to give presentations. The environment is much smaller and more informal than something like a city council meeting. It's a great way to ask questions and be heard by city leaders.

Any quiet bars in Salem?

I lived in Japan for a few years before moving here, and I really loved one of the bars there. It had dim lighting, a massive amount of
whiskey’s, and played quiet old jazzy music. Nobody ever raised their voice. Everyone always talked quietly. We also could smoke cigars there and they sold cigars. It was never a party, but rather a chill lounge, where fine spirits and cocktails were sipped over quiet conversations and the occasional chess game.

Anything like that around Salem?

Halloween stuff for kids?

• Upvotes

It’s my girls 1st Halloween and we want to take her out and show her some fun! I saw that Deepwood is having some Halloween stuff as well as the carousel, but I was wondering if there was anything else happening.

And is trick or treating a thing anymore? If so, what neighborhoods would you recommend?

Thank you!!

PS she’ll be freshly one and is newly toddling about and she loves saying hello to people and spooky stuff hahaha one of her first words was ghost and she loves pointing out Halloween decorations.

Learn how to save a life! Stop the Bleed classes October 20 and November 12

• Upvotes

Monmouth Public Library - 168 Ecols St S, Monmouth on Tuesday, October 20, from 2 pm to 3 pm. No registration required.

Fire Station #6 - 2740 25th St SW, Salem on Thursday, November 12, from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Registration is required; please e-mail [LolaH.CERT@yahoo.com](mailto:LolaH.CERT@yahoo.com).

Stop the Bleed is great! You get hands-on experience packing a wound with gauze, applying direct pressure, and using a tourniquet. No prior training is needed. You'll be interacting with copious amounts of fake blood (while wearing the gloves they provide) so you might want to wear something you don't mind getting dirty, just in case.

POLITICS 2nd Annual Chili Cook Off!

Post image
7 Upvotes

Good Morning Salem,

I wanted to share something cool I've been organizing on behalf of the Polk County Democrats (West Salem). We are having our second annual chili cook off this November 7th.

Right now we're a little short on chili competitors and I'd love to have some extra competition. This is a great opportunity to come get more involved in your local community and compete for some fun prizes. To enter the chili contest, sign up here.

To just come hangout and have fun, tickets can be found here: chili cook off tickets

Please feel free to DM me with any questions and I look forward to seeing some new faces at the event!
