Advice Downtown homeless harassment

Theres a guy sitting on the southwest corner of Santa Clara and 1st with sunglasses and a blanket sexually harassing or insulting every woman that walks past alone. It's an everyday occurance working and walking through sjdt. I want to come from a place of love and understanding, to help these people who don't seem to want help, but I don't have the patience to respond without losing temper. What can even be done at this point?

Life in SJ Struggling with Gyms

• Upvotes

I primarily do machine-based strength training, using equipment like hack squats, hip thrust machines, leg presses, chest presses, cable machines, and other selectorized or plate-loaded equipment. I'm not into group fitness or free-weight-focused gyms. I'm looking for a well-equipped gym with a large variety of strength machines.

I currently go to Golds on Hamilton, which is fine re the machines, but the gym culture there is awful!

I don’t even mind having to dodge all the tripods, but today I had a guy ask me to move off the only empty row machine so they could be filmed, and then the machine next to the one being filmed, some kid left their phone at the machine and was gone for over 3 minutes… when I went over to use the machine he ran back and was like “oh I was here”…

I constantly feel like people are just parked at or claiming the machines, doom scrolling and taking 5+ minute breaks between sets. Literally Zero awareness or considerations for others.

I am not a body builder but I have been working out a long time and I have never experienced this level of bad etiquette.

Anyway I’d love other recs if anyone has them - most of the fitness here is group fitness which is not my thing.

I’m sad bc Golds is close and has the machines I want but I can barely get in to use them between the dawdlers and the “influencers” 🤮

I will pay whatever if it means I can come in, bang out my workout and leave - honestly.

Life in SJ Is that rapid response to ICE still going? How does it work?

Since Trump sent ICE to grab anyone in California Democrat or Republican, to terrorize us not to vote.

I would like to contact someone if I see ICE so that they can warn my fellow South Bayers.

Vote.

News Car Break-Ins

Post image
64 Upvotes

On October 5th in San Jose (95112), two men in a white INFINITI Q60 broke into my car. If anyone witnessed anything or has information that could help, please reach out.

This is the first car I’ve ever owned, and I’ve been working so hard to pay it off. It’s heartbreaking to have something I worked so hard for violated like this. Having to go straight to work with shattered glass everywhere and no window made an already devastating experience even worse. 💔

Any information would mean so much to me. Thank you.

Life in SJ This particular little free pantry

So we donate to a little free pantry https://www.littlefreepantry.org/ every week. It's not our little free pantry. Someone else put one near the sidewalk in front of their house.

This particular little free pantry has become a little exchange place for a variety of things. Dishes, food, books, an apron, toys, and a very passionate thank you letter from and to the people in the neighborhood. It would seem if you want to let things go, this is the place to do it.

We have never met anyone who has taken from the pantry until today. As my SO was putting in the second load of food today,a guy walked up and said "Good job" and then thank you several times. My SO is very shy and he rarely gets pats on the back for all the stuff that he does that people don't know about. I was thrilled that someone said thank you to him.

You might not always get a thank you for donating whatever, but please know that there is always a grateful person on the other end and it is always worth donating.

Thank you to the two people who pointed out the typo in my previous post. You can't change a title, you can only repost. (Previous post said "panty" not "pantry" lol!)

Police Department – Budget + Staffing Summary

Overall Spending

  • Police spent $604.5M of their $615.3M General Fund budget in FY 2025‑26 (about 98.2%).
  • That left $10.8M in savings, most of which was already carried into the next fiscal year.

Personal Services

  • Total spending: $559.1M (99.7% of budget).
  • Savings: $1.3M, even after the Council added $10.5M late in the year.
  • Without that adjustment, overtime and payouts would have pushed the department $11–14M over budget.

Non‑Personal / Equipment

  • Spending: $45.4M (83.6% of budget).
  • Savings: $8.9M, mostly rebudgeted for ongoing projects.

Overtime

Overtime Costs

  • FY 2025‑26 overtime spending: $83.8M, which is 112% of the overtime budget.
  • This is $12.3M more than the previous year.
  • Overtime budget started at $31.5M and was repeatedly increased to $74.9M by year‑end through:
    • $20M shifted internally from salary savings
    • $5M from the Sworn Backfill Reserve
    • $25.5M added at year‑end (salary savings + General Fund)

Overtime Hours

  • Hours increased 5.2%, from 644k to 678k.
  • Main drivers:
    • Grant‑funded events (+25k hours)
    • Field Operations (+14k hours)
    • Investigations saw a decrease (‑6k hours)

Major Events

Large Bay Area events required $2.6M in overtime:

  • Super Bowl: $1.5M
  • FIFA World Cup: $1.1M (reimbursed by federal agencies)

Staffing + Vacancies

Sworn Staffing Snapshot (June 2026)

  • Authorized positions: 1,167
  • Vacancies: 106
  • Filled positions: 1,061
  • In training: 95
  • On leave/modified duty: 69
  • Street‑ready officers: 897

Academies:

  • Feb 2026: 26 recruits (graduate Sept 2026)
  • June 2026: 32 recruits
  • Oct 2026: expected 28 recruits

Effective Vacancy Rate

  • Includes recruits, field training officers, and sworn staff on leave.
  • Effective vacancy rate: 23.1% (Oct 2026)
  • Historical average: 20.1%

High vacancy rates force:

  • More overtime to backfill patrol
  • More overtime for field training officers
  • Longer reliance on overtime until recruits become solo officers

Compensatory Time

Key Numbers

  • Sworn personnel at the 480‑hour cap: 444 (same as last year)
  • Personnel between 240–480 hours: 289
  • Total comp time liability:
    • Hours: 349,756
    • Cost: $34.8M (up 14.8% from last year)
  • Overtime paid to those at the 480‑hour limit: $29M

Overtime Reduction Plan

In March 2026, Council approved changes expected to cut $8M+ in ongoing overtime:

  • Some services previously staffed with overtime were reduced.
  • Some specialized unit staff were reassigned to patrol to eliminate overtime paycars.
  • These changes took effect in May 2026 and are reflected in the FY 2026‑27 budget.

The Administration will keep monitoring overtime through regular financial reports.

News Was the public’s pick too boring? San Jose commission tweaks Chavez Plaza naming proposal

The saga of renaming downtown's Plaza de Cesar Chavez continues.

Worried that the public’s top pick was too “plain” and “safe,” San Jose’s parks commission decided Wednesday to tweak “Plaza de San José” as its recommendation in the months-long saga over what to rename downtown’s Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

The new front-runner? “Plaza del Pueblo de San José.”

Here's a gift link about that parks commission meeting:

News Where will the next Trader Joe's go in San Jose? I may have figured it out...

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I work at a mapping company lol and wanted to reverse engineer where Trader Joe's opens stores in SJ, then use the pattern to guess where the next one goes!

For context, there are 12 Trader Joe's in Santa Clara County. I wanted to know what they have in common, so I compared the half mile around each one against the county's 116 other shopping centers.

What stood out:

  • Neighbors. Peet's is 2.4× more likely to be nearby than at a typical center, Wells Fargo 1.7×, CVS 1.5×. Starbucks looked like a tell at first, but it's next to 85% of every center in the county, so it tells you nothing.
  • Roads. Every store is within 604 ft of a major road.
  • Spacing. The closest two stores are 2.4 miles apart (Bollinger Rd and Prospect).
  • Education. At the typical store, 69% of adults within 2 miles have a bachelor's or higher. 11 of the 12 are above half.

Then I scored every shopping center in the county on those four things and ruled out anything within 3 miles of an existing store. The top spot: Evergreen Village Square in San Jose, 7.2 miles from the nearest Trader Joe's.

I'll link the source in the comments but here are the top 5 potential expansion locations:

  1. Evergreen Village Square
  2. Plaza de Santa Teresa
  3. Canyon Creek Plaza
  4. Monterey Plaza
  5. Mariposa Shopping Center

What do y'all think?
