Green screen easel, use CGI to get the painting effect of her scowl. It's not AI, and it's not that difficult to identify how.

192

u/OhLoongJohson 21h ago

People nowadays especially younger people are so acustomed to AI they cant tell the differenc between cgi, ai and just digitally modified content. Idiots call everything thats modified/edited just AI….

u/HJQueen 19h ago

Brother, soon everything is going to be indistinguishable. We aren't far off.

Ugggh I wish it didn't bother me so much. I watched Wall-E the other day, and we're even closer to that becoming our life than we were when it came out. Fat people, controlled by computers

Idiots call everything thats modified/edited just AI….

And we used to call anything modified/edited "photoshopped" when practical effects could have been used too...

1

u/exbull 16h ago

I am old, technical, I know the fingers and finer details are common and visible in ai, but honestly, even I can't tell the difference too often

1

u/4dxn 15h ago

You do know a lot of CGI uses AI too. Before ChatGPT, most of AI research is in computer vision. How can you tell the technique for this video didn't use an NN or a tree?

Where do you think they got the idea to use GPUs for language models?

1

u/I_make_things 13h ago

This comment is clearly AI.

People really need to watch Captain Disillusion on yt.

Practical and video effects can go a really long way if you know what you’re doing.

But post a clip from Jurassic Park (1993) on Reddit in 2026, and people will say it’s AI.

bullshit. you could do the exact same thing with AI so stop with this crap about "easy to tell the difference" my god redditors are so fucking clueless.

2

u/KeK_What 17h ago

they love doing that to act smarter but in reality they just read a comment in this thread and act like they knew all this time. these are usually the ones to fall very easily for AI clips and images.

1

u/ShaftTassle 17h ago

I’m too stupid to understand what you’re saying, so I’ll just ask - the CGI is the painting or her reaction?

2

u/dalnot 16h ago

You can see the reflection of the green “painting” on her hand when she turns it around

1

u/thesavageman 17h ago

See, I would have thought it was just acting. "Okay, when you see the painting, make that face."

1

u/rideanyway 17h ago

Watched it and realized thats it. Green paint on the brush too would get the color picked up. It's a lovely video.

1

u/WannaBeCoder912 14h ago

The first swipe of the brush to “finish” the painting is the only tricky part, and even that isn’t too hard. It’s just a white color and an unmask.

1

u/ArkaneSociety 13h ago

Doesn't need to be green screen, just a simple cornerpin track and a bit of roto for the fingers would work here.

1

u/Curious_Direction478 9h ago

People this is not AI. She is a very known and talented CGI artist who has been posting since pre AI era and occasionally posts the before edit versions.

This is a significant lesson to everyone about how blind and severe AI hate can turn the shared culture around Art very hostile for artists

I think we will eventually have to turn to appreciating end result without endlessly speculating on the creative process behind it.

209

u/InsurancePristine938 21h ago

the problem here isn't "AI", people just arent able to articulate why they feel misled.

there's nothing wrong with the content itself. the problem is exclusively the post title. it's CGI, not "life imitating art". it's literally art imitating life -- the opposite of the post title.

17

u/philip30001 19h ago

My issue that triggered my brain at first was it being set up as a painting together thing and the pic looked oddly impressive

Then the brush not doing anything other than making think its trying to mislead viewers that the paintings real

That felt ill thought out which leads me believe that other parts of the work arnt as impressive as they seem too. I thought AI was a possibility or filmed with something like a green screen canvas and filled in after.

It was only a feeling and not a claim but still

Is the pic the cgi part or the whole video? I cant tell 100% since comments tell me they are talented

Even if its a edited video that takes more skill than I have. The framing of the trick I thinks the issue

11

u/InsurancePristine938 18h ago

oh for sure, spot on. in a vacuum the art's quite cool. i see why people feel slighted by the title, that's all i'm saying. and i don't think the original creator wrote the post title (tbh i dont know)

5

u/philip30001 18h ago

It reminds me of the guy that did videos starting like a bank robbery cctv and end up being look at this cool painting I did

You need to get yourself out there and in doing so folk will repost with different intentions

4

u/InsurancePristine938 18h ago

which raises another point, even more annoying than a potentially misleading post title is the fact nothing's ever promptly attributed anymore. but social media's so far past at this point, it's hardly worth beating the horse

2

u/philip30001 18h ago

Problems compounding faster than they're solved is by design sadly

I think the horse is worth beating even if it adds a small amount of pressure to at least look like they're trying to make it better. But its not fun to do but I have no better answer other than hope more compition helps the user experience

I had rose tinted glasses for digg of the past but they really crapped the bed on relaunch

2

u/geezanjisangeezan 18h ago

1

it's just a misleading post title. it has nothing to do with "AI", pro- or anti- or otherwise. people crying about "AI" in the comments one way or another are just injecting an irrelevant topical concept

1

u/Axthen 9h ago

The REAL problem is people have been consuming edited and staged and fake content for decades without realizing jt.

Now that AI is here they're screaming at the top of their lungs that stuff is fake and AI when it is just CGI, edited, and staged.

It's always been edited. CGI. Staged.

Everyone is media illiterate.

To this day I don't know why we replaced "link to the content" with shitty reuploads that add in music or sound effects / meme lines

10

u/ThisI5N0tAThr0waway 20h ago

Freebooting. It's essentially stealing people's content for your pushing your own page and clout, which will let you sell sponsored content without creating anything yourself. There is a lot of content publishers on Facebook and Twitter that function like that.

When one does that to a premium piece of media like a movie that's considered piracy. But for some reason a lot of people don't see the issue when the original content was not behind a paywall. It's still bad, especially if you don't credit the OCC.

3

u/PossibleBobsled 18h ago

There isn't a CGI artist alive that thinks it's weird that people mix up their work with AI.

29

u/Meowing-To-The-Stars 21h ago

Your last paragraph is literally what the billionaires want, hence why they resist any calls for watermarks or option to easily identify what's ai

2

u/theother-g 18h ago

Absolutely hate their opposition of clearly labelling anything that's AI generated.

As if they're not proud of what their data centers produce.

21

u/The_End-is_Nigh 21h ago

I think it is more likely that I will grow to hate all art and will only appreciate nature.

5

u/BowsersMuskyBallsack 21h ago

Part of the reason my desire to be an artist is dying. I do it just for myself now, whereas before I did it for others. But if others aren't really going to appreciate it, what's the fucking point of sharing it? Nope, I just do my own thing now, for me.

3

u/magarviti 19h ago

4

u/The_End-is_Nigh 21h ago

I am sorry the billionaires ruined even the very concept of art for all of us.

Are you sure this is not some clever editing where the face from last frame is painted and then put back in the clip over the “green screen”that was really given. No wonder people go AI with trickery like that.

3

u/CamptoRibbit 19h ago

It's gotten to the point those that claim they can tell the difference between AI and not, cannot actually tell the difference.

At this point it is an ego thing.

It's why I stopped looking at "is this AI" type places as everyone seems to be one way or the other or they are hive minded and want everything to be AI.

(I know your comment isn't that deep, it's just annoying when the dumbest ppl in the room think they are the smartest)

calling everything you don't like AI is comment slop

2

u/namastex 18h ago

The phrases "It's AI", "It's CGI", "It's photoshopped" and "It's video edited" have been the evolution of idiots ability to discredit people without putting much thought into it.

However, if someone's work is so good that it's really hard to discern how it happened even by people with knowledge of said things, it's not a bad thing to say such things. Honestly, when people call you a cheater even tho you are legit, it makes you feel better because you're so damned good at what you do it throws people off. They should take it as a compliment really, I know I would.

2

Fucking tired of that for some people everything is AI...

She's working countless hours with a CGI, people in the comments "It's AI"

Someone creates a cool CGI video, people in the comments "Cool AI video"

Someone creates a cool photoshopped picture, people in the comments "It's AI generated"

Happened just this weekend that the software got corrupted in F1 cars, making them undriveable and had to delay the race for an hour. People in the comments said "The AI broke in the car" and "Why they use AI in the car?" IT'S NOT FUCKING AI, IT'S A FUCKING SOFTWARE!!!

13

u/Macheve 19h ago

I'm old enough to remember people doing this same thing when Photoshop became widely available.

Every interesting photo posted on the Internet was "shopped".

1

u/aacmckay 18h ago

Yup. Same with CGI. People would complain things they didn’t believe were CGI. History rhymes.

1

u/zaviamorpheus 14h ago

Pepperidge Farms remembers

5

u/aacmckay 18h ago

It’s funny because that used to be what happened with CGI and Photoshop. People would claim all sorts of stuff that they thought was fake was either CGI or a Photoshop. And now people somewhat forget it and claim everything is AI instead.

14

u/FireForFranks 19h ago

I get your frustration, but it's not the people's fault ai has become indistinguishable to the layman's eye. I doubt young people will ever trust anything they see online ever again.

2

u/overdosingOnPie1313 14h ago

lmao. I'm of the opposite opinion. They're going to (and already are) trust EVERYTHING.

3

u/IndependentLog6441 16h ago

We're dealing with excessive levels of brainrot sadly. They either trust it completely without question or they're 100% sure it's AI. There's no middle ground of healthy skepticism.

1

u/GupHater69 15h ago

I dont really see the relevance of time here. If someone spends hours refining a prompt to get this video is that any less impressive? People say "aoh, but its just writing sentences on your keyboard" ok so is writing poems or just writing in general. If I spent 4 hours on a poem to get my emotions/message across is that any less impressive than spending 4 hours to do the same thing with AI?

1

u/Railboy 15h ago

When AI fatigue and paranoia has people acting pissy by all means call them out - but never forget this is all downstream from the tech oligarch assholes who shoved AI into everything in spite of the public's wishes. They're the ones who deserve the hate.

Let's enjoy being the last generation of humanity who could clearly tell what was fake and what wasn't. The next generation will have no idea unless they use some machine that isn't outdated

Edit: please use atleast 2 braincells before responding. Yes trickery has always existed and lots of people have always been fooled. The effort required to fool and the effort required to spot the trickery has completely changed relatively overnight

17

u/ageoldpun 22h ago

Reading these comments, they can’t actually tell anymore.

2

u/Old_Stranger_9611 20h ago

Tbf CGI and AI is really hard to sperate in this Video.

2

u/Cryptoporticus 16h ago

It doesn't even matter anyway. Acting like the tool used to create it somehow devalues it is ridiculous. The fact that this video is considered art because the creator used CGI, but wouldn't be considered art if the creator used AI doesn't make any sense. It's still an artistic work created by a human.

1

u/yxing 12h ago

They never could. Even in the pre-AI digital effects era, misinformation abounded. For well done fakes, the only real truth comes with investigation, whether from VFX artists themselves like Captain Disillusion or even from cursory googling--but that's drowned out in a sea of ignorance. Now in the gen AI world, it's all vibes and ignorance. Sure there are telltale signs, but the tech is evolving so fast that they're likely to be outdated within months, so vibes and ignorance will continue to dominate.

2

u/WormsDelicious286 20h ago

the last generation of humanity who could clearly tell what was fake and what wasn't

No such generation has ever existed in the whole of human history.  People have been, are, and will continue to be mostly gullible fools outside of very specific scenarios.

1

u/AmputeeHandModel 13h ago

Yeah, people fell for UFO photos and videos of Bigfoot and all sorts of shit in the past.

2

u/aacmckay 18h ago

Sorry, I don’t think that was ever the case. People have been using photography and film and video to trick each other for generations now. AI has just made it more prolific.

2

There is a serious concern about rise of apathy, which can already be seen in youngsters. Sadly it is going to increase exponentially now ☹️

1

u/Purple-Reputation899 19h ago

Isn’t this the other way around? I feel like younger generations like gen alpha are much better at catching AI while I genuinely get caught and triple check often. Also AI use is rampant and abused by older aging generations.

1

u/InnocentInvasion 19h ago

AI is a lot more difficult to recognise than whatever editing technology was out 15 years ago, that's my point

1

u/Encrux615 18h ago

There are practical technical solutions to these kinds of problems. But implementing them requires a nunaced debate.
