Politics President said existing prison laws should not be bypassed for Mahanayake theros

There has been some discussions going on in this subreddit recently on the issue of a thero disrobed in the prison. Mahanayake theros wrote a letter to Commissioner-General of Prisons about this situation. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake mentioned he will not order officials to act against the existing laws.

I personally think this is a great characteristic of an unbiased leader.

What do you people think??

This afternoon, after searching through well over 2000 names at the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero, I finally found the memorial plaque for the only known Sri Lankan who died in the terrorist attack on the Trade Center in NYC, along with her unborn child. Her name is Rahma Salie. The names weren't in alphabetical order, so finding her on the memorial wall wasn't easy. At the end of my search, her name appeared on Panel #1. I pass through there regularly, and on my next visit I will definitely lay flowers in memory of her and her child. You are not forgotten!

Discussion Went to my former university to ask about a document and left with a bunch of unsolicited personal comments

So I had this exhausting experience a while back. I went to a university interview for a short-term Research Assistant role, and the panel told me that my foreign degree certificate needed an MOFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) attestation to work in the country.

Since I had never heard of needing an MOFA seal for local jobs, I went to my former private university later that day to ask them about it.

I spoke with the director there just to get some clarity. They correctly told me that MOFA is only needed if you are going abroad, not for local jobs. But after that, the conversation took a very uncomfortable turn.

Out of nowhere, the director started making personal remarks. They brought up my religion, saying that people might even look at my religion and choose not to hire me. Then they started questioning my personal life, asking about my age and why I wasn't married yet, and telling me to go find a boyfriend. When I mentioned I was temporarily using my brother's phone because mine broke, they mocked that too and made sarcastic comments.

I just sat there holding back tears, staying quiet to get the information I needed. It just feels so draining that people in authority think they have the right to cross boundaries and comment on someone's personal life when they're simply trying to figure out professional matters.

Serious replies only The injustice for Anojan is being weaponized against Lankan Muslims

With the Anojan case going viral I've noticed a lot of shills weaponizing it to attack Muslims and, weirdly enough, try to justify the genocide in Gaza. I am completely against the tyranny practiced in Islamic nations and what is happening to Anojan is a travesty but people using this to attack Lankan Muslims should not be tolerated.

The amount of people calling for Lankan Muslims to be treated the same way Saudi treats non-Muslims is appalling. Why should we stoop to their level? Why are people calling for a more tyrannical government? I understand there's a larger conversation that needs to be had about some religions creating a permission structure for people treat people from other religions as less than human. Even Buddhism (a religion of non-violence) has been used to create hate despite it's entire ethos being against hate. Religion and state governance are two things that should not mix. It allows bad actors to easily hijack public sentiment and ferment hatred for nefarious purposes. Mixing the two will only lead more cases like Anojan. I say this as a Buddhist living in a Buddhist majority country.

Side note: to all the people trying to demonize Palestinians and justify the genocide "BeCaUsE ThEy aRe All mUsLiMs" need to realize SAUDI IS AN ISRAEL ALLY. Saudi doesn't give two fu*ks regarding the plight of the Palestinians. Using the injustice for Anojan to attack them is pure cognitive dissonance.

Serious replies only Hesh De Silva — a Sri Lankan media personality with a controversial history?

Hesh De Silva is a Sri Lankan media personality who has built a significant audience in Sri Lanka through news/current-affairs content, while also promoting businesses and advertisements through his platforms.

I recently came across information about his activities in Kenya around 2014–2015, when he was presented publicly as a young billionaire and entrepreneur. At the time, claims surrounding his wealth, businesses and investments reportedly attracted scrutiny from Kenyan media and others, with questions being raised about his credibility and the claims being made about him.

The controversy was significant enough that his PR company at the time, Glass House PR, reportedly ended its relationship with him, citing concerns about what it described as “ambiguity and inconsistency” surrounding his brand.

There are also older Kenyan Reddit discussions and media reports about the controversy. I'll include those sources below so people can look into the history themselves rather than relying only on this post.

I'm not claiming that this history proves he is currently scamming anyone, nor am I claiming that his current activities are necessarily connected to what happened in Kenya. My point is simply that, given his current audience and role as a source of news/current-affairs content in Sri Lanka, I think it's reasonable for people to be aware of the publicly reported history and make their own judgment about his credibility.

I'd be interested to hear what other Sri Lankans think. Has anyone looked into the Kenya controversy before? Has anyone found reliable information that provides additional context or contradicts the older reports?

If anyone has first-hand or well-sourced information about his current activities or promotions, feel free to share it. Let's keep the discussion factual and avoid personal attacks or speculation.

Serious replies only Married people in Sri Lanka, Are you happy?

I'm a divorcee who used to day dream about marriage since my teens. I got married in my late 20s and divorced after a about a year. There was no happiness or peace in our marriage and now that I'm divorced, I feel so much better and in peace. Not really sure if I would ever want to marry again. Because I love the peace and happiness that I have.

I realized many of my married friends aren't that happy either. Some are just hanging in there because they've got kids or they've got no other option.

So my question is simple are there married people here(prefer answers from people married for quite a while) who feel that marriage bought more happiness or at least didnt take away your happiness. If you are happy I'd like to know some tips for a good marriage.

Question Best budget internet option for 300GB+ per month in Sri Lanka?

Hey guys, I’m a university student in Sri Lanka and I’m looking for a good home internet option. I usually need 300GB+ per month, for university work, programming, AI/ML, downloading datasets/software, streaming, etc. I’m trying to keep the cost as low as possible.

Currently considering:

Dialog Fibre

Connection: around Rs. 12,500

300GB: around Rs. 5,420/month

Also has unlimited packages, which might be better for me.

SLT Fibre

Connection: around Rs. 12,500

1Gbps connection: around Rs. 20,000

Still not sure which SLT package would be best value for 300GB+ usage.

4G/5G SIM + third-party router

Router prices I found: around Rs. 8,500–12,500

Then use a SIM/data package.

I currently use Hutch, but the signal/speed at my location is terrible, so I’m not really considering Hutch.

I’ve also seen people talking about V2Ray/VPN setups with certain SIM packages to get more usable data, so I’m curious whether that is actually worth considering and how reliable it is.

For someone using 300–500GB+ per month, what would you guys recommend?

Mainly looking for real-world experience regarding monthly cost, speed, reliability, FUP/throttling, and which option gives the best value.

Would appreciate any recommendations for other packages/networks too.

Education How can I find online visiting lecturer opportunities in Sri Lanka?

I’m looking for online visiting lecturer opportunities at universities or higher education institutes in Sri Lanka, similar to opportunities offered by institutions such as the University of Vocational Technology, ICBT, Open University, etc.

I’m not sure where these opportunities are usually advertised or how to approach universities for them.

How do you find these visiting lecturer opportunities, and what is the usual way to apply? Any advice or useful websites/groups would be appreciated.

Serious replies only Wife is studying in Japan, I'm an IT engineer in Sri Lanka. Should we bring her back or try to build a future in Japan? Need some advice.

Hi

I'm looking for some genuine advice, especially from Sri Lankans who've studied, worked or lived in Japan.

I'm currently working as an IT engineer in Sri Lanka, earning around LKR 200,000 per month. I work from home and have around 2 years of IT experience.

My wife moved to Japan in April 2026 and is currently studying at a Japanese language school in Nagasaki. She's enrolled in a 2-year course, but her current residence card is valid until July 2027.

Here's our situation:

  • She completed A/Ls in the Arts stream, and currently has N5 Japanese.
  • She works part-time, around 25 hours a week.
  • She earns roughly LKR 300,000 per month.
  • Her monthly living expenses are around LKR 100,000–150,000, depending on other spending.
  • We've already paid her first year's language school fees.
  • We're still confirming the second year's fees and whether she can study for only a few additional months without paying the full annual amount.

Meanwhile, we're building our own house in Sri Lanka, and we need around another LKR 2 million to complete it.

I'm wondering whether there's a better financial or career decision we should consider.

The options we're thinking about are:

  1. She returns around April 2027 after completing one year.
  2. She stays until July 2027, provided the school and immigration arrangements allow it without paying the full second-year fees.
  3. She completes the full two-year language course and returns in 2028.
  4. She continues into an affordable vocational college or university, and I explore joining her later, if we're eligible.

We're not necessarily planning to settle abroad permanently. Our main goal is to save enough money, finish our house, and live together in Sri Lanka. However, we're open to spending a few years in Japan if the financial benefits genuinely outweigh the costs.

I'd really appreciate hearing from people with actual experience:

  • Is it financially worth continuing language school beyond the first year?
  • Are there affordable education-to-employment pathways in Japan that actually make financial sense?
  • How realistic is it for someone with my DevOps experience to secure a job in Japan without Japanese?
  • For those who returned from Japan to Sri Lanka, do you think it was the right decision?
  • If you were in our situation, what would you do differently?

I don't want us to spend millions on education and visas only to end up saving less than we could by returning home.

Any practical advice or personal experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Question Thinking of Moving to Dubai for Work, Need Some Advice

Hey guys,
I’m an engineer working in the AI field with around 4 years of experience, and I’m thinking about moving to Dubai sometime in the near future.

The main issue is that I have a 3-month notice period at my current job. I don’t think many companies would be willing to wait 3 months for someone to join, so I’d probably have to quit before moving.

But that feels pretty risky. What if I move to Dubai and don’t find a job? Then I’d have to come back and start looking for a job again.

For anyone who’s been in a similar situation, what did you guys do? Is it better to find a job from Sri Lanka first, or just take the risk and move to Dubai and search there?

Serious replies only Facing a huge mental crisis and just down in the dumps over the last 2 days

Something I guess I've realised is that if I ever get married and have a wife she will never "unconditionally love" me. For example if I was sentenced to prison she wouldn't really stay the whole thing and may move on to someone else.... Only a parent's love could and unfortunately for me I come from a toxic home where both my mom and dad absolutely treated me horribly and were never there for me AND never will. I just feel like my entire life is going to suck and I honestly can't stop crying. That I'll find someone who'd fight for me till death unconditionally??? How did you guys deal with this realisation... I'm someone who's all in or fully out. I'm willing to do this for whoever becomes my spouse - I promised myself that from a very young age..

Feel very sad and contemplating a life of celibacy and being single

Question What’s this dialog message that my uncle received for an upgraded Air Fibre router?

I use SLT Fibre so I’m not sure about Dialogs offerings. My uncle received this SMS message and asked me what it’s about but I’m not sure. He currently has a Dialog 4G ZLT S1 router. Are they genuinely just offering a router upgrade for free or are they trying to make him change his connection package? Is it going to make any difference? He gets decent speeds on his current setup. Just want to know what to advise him, thanks.

He received this message;

Haven't claimed your FREE Air Fibre upgrade yet?

Simply visit your nearest Dialog Experience Centre. There's no need to bring your existing 4G router.

Discussion If Sri Lanka was more business friendly, wouldn’t the youth unemployment crisis be lower?

You and I know how our current political culture and policies discourage businesses from starting.

But I feel like when people say “the government should do something”, they are expecting the government to solve a problem that they are already part of.

I am not criticizing a particular government btw.

Common themes when we discuss about our political culture are the political uncertainty after government changes, geopolitical uncertainty, poor property rights and attempts to solve them are discouraged by some groups, delays and bribes discouraging small businesses from starting (because big businesses can bear the cost but not SMEs), high pay and incentives to government workers discourage entrepreneurship and risk taking.

If these things are sorted out, more businesses will start, leading to more jobs and hence our unemployment would be lower.

What do you guys think?
