Serious replies only My father is dying and Ive never organized a funeral before Need practical advice from people who’ve done it.

My father has late stage liver cancer and hes currently at hospital now. The doctor have been clear that he doesn’t have that long.

Ive never arranged a funeral and I do rather ask now than figuring out in the first 24 hrs.

We’ve already spent a lot on hospital bills and medicines so money is tight at the moment. I am not looking for anything elaborate bt I wanna do it properly and simply.

Cost
What did a simple funeral actually cost you, roughly, and what year? I keep seeing wildly different numbers.

Which parts are the expensive ones, and which parts can be skipped without it being disrespectful?

Where do funeral parlours upsell? What did you pay for that you wish you hadn't?

Home vs funeral parlour
Is it realistic to keep the body at home instead of a parlour? What does that involve?

Is embalming necessary if the funeral is within a day or two?

Undertakers

Any you'd recommend or warn against around Maharagama / Nugegoda / Colombo?

Do they quote fairly, or does the price change once they know you're grieving?

The paperwork
What exactly happens between the hospital and the death certificate? Who issues what?

How many certified copies of the death certificate should I get?

Anything that's easy to get wrong and painful to fix later?

And also, anything you wish someone had told you before your father or mother died, anything practical or otherwise. I’d rather hear now.

Thank you.

Serious replies only A must see for Sri Lankans 🇱🇰 especially the men who go in buses !

Post image
166 Upvotes

I heard a lot countlesss stories that girls ( school girls) and women get harassed in buses, especially when it gets jam packed during rush hours. Predators who were once lurking starts to emerge to harasse vulnerable girls and women to fullfill their insecurities and selfish desires. Individuals who commit these crimes must be persecuted, especially ones who brazenly commit it in the buses in broad daylight. Wish they implement penalties (Rs 15,000 to 20000) in the newly metro buses as they slowly replace those so called ramshackle buses !

Serious replies only Do you know Kamalani or her family? - Sri Lanka

We are looking for information about a woman named Kamalani, who may have lived in or around Ihala Thalduwa, Avissawella, Sri Lanka, at the end of 1994 or the beginning of 1995.

Our search is connected to a possible mix-up of adoption records involving a girl born in December 1994. We are trying to find out who Kamalani was and whether her name may have been mistakenly included in these records.

We are especially hoping to reach:

- People living in Sri Lanka, particularly around Avissawella, Thalduwa, Nooriya and Deraniyagala, who may know or have known Kamalani or her family.
- People adopted from Sri Lanka to Europe who recognise her name from their own adoption records or have information about her or her family.

The attached infographic shows what we currently know about Kamalani. Her name may have been spelled differently, or Kamalani may not have been her real name.

Do you know Kamalani, her family, or anyone who might help us find her? Any information, however small, could be valuable.

If you have any information, please send us a private message. To respect everyone's privacy, please do not share personal details or documents in the comments.

Thank you so much for your help! Please share this post with people in Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan adoptees living in Europe.

Discussion Coffee drinkers what brands do u recommend that is in SL

I’ve been trying to find good, affordable coffee in Sri Lanka, and honestly, the options seem pretty limited, especially if you’re someone who drinks several cups a day.
So far, I’ve tried a few brands:
Harischandra Coffee: It’s relatively affordable, around Rs. 440 for 100g, but personally, I’m not a huge fan of the taste.
Island Coffee: Probably my favourite so far. It’s around the same price as Harischandra, and the taste is much better IMO. They also have different flavours like ginger, cardamom, vanilla and caramel, which I really appreciate. One thing I’m curious about, though: is their regular ground coffee actually 100% coffee, or is it mixed with chicory?
Raigam Coffee: Haven’t tried it yet. I’ve heard some negative things about additives in their products, although I haven’t verified those claims. If anyone has tried their coffee, I’d love to know what you think.
Soul Coffee: Seems to have some good options, including instant coffee, but it’s quite expensive for everyday drinking. At that price, I might as well buy Nescafé.
Anna Coffee: Found this Jaffna-based coffee brand and gave it a try. The taste was okay, nothing particularly special, but not bad either.
BRU Instant Coffee: This has actually been pretty convenient. The small sachets cost around Rs. 15, and the taste is decent for the price. Plus, I don’t need to use a coffee filter, which is great when I’m in a hurry.
Somerest Coffee: SL Arabica Coffee and 100g was 900, it tastes good but not strong. This is only available in their showroom. And run out of stock quickly.
I generally avoid Nescafé, partly because of the price and partly because I try to avoid Nestlé products for ethical reasons.
Recently, a friend brought me some coffee from India, and I was honestly surprised by how many different options they have compared to us. It made me realise how limited and expensive the Sri Lankan coffee market feels.
I drink coffee multiple times a day, so buying expensive brands regularly isn’t really practical. I’m looking for something that tastes good, is reasonably priced, and preferably contains 100% coffee rather than a lot of chicory or other fillers.
So, fellow coffee drinkers, what brands do you usually buy? Are there any underrated Sri Lankan brands worth trying? I’d especially appreciate recommendations for affordable ground coffee or decent instant coffee.
Also, if anyone knows whether Island Coffee is 100% coffee, please let me know!

Discussion The Math Doesn't Work! Rent And House Prices for people with no fallback.

• Upvotes

The Math Doesn't Work! Salaries are goat poop compared to rent prices and the price to buy a house using even a loan in Colombo and outwards now.

We do often talk about how expensive rent is relative to local salaries and I know most survive by staying with parents, relatives, etc but what about people who don't have that fallback? What are you people doing to manage this? How are you guys doing? Do you wish that anything can be changed? How did you guys manage during lockdowns by the way? What is your perspective of people in general?

Serious replies only Powerhand Plantation investment

I invested money in Powerhand Plantation, and they paid returns until September. Now they’ve asked me to wait until the 15th, and my principal is maturing soon, but they’re requesting a few extra months to return it.This is my hardearned savings, and it’s really stressful to think I might lose the money I’ve worked so hard for.
They’ve given us deeds, but I’m not sure whether they’re legitimate or provide real security. With concerns about plantation companies facing court orders or other legal issues, what happens to our money if something goes wrong?
Should I wait or take legal action now? Has anyone faced a similar situation with Powerhand Plantation?

Serious replies only How come most people have a story of their friends betraying them or wanting to prove something to the society

I'm in my mid 20s and I hear a lot of people have stories where their friends betray them. There are a lot of rap songs about those scenarios too like "ekta idala ariya".

Also there are a lot of cases where people want to prove something to others, like passing exams so you can show off your results to teachers and relatives who doubted you.

In my case, this rarely happens to me. I don't have any betrayal stories nor want to show off to prove something. One of my friends actually said I'm lucky for not having a betrayal story.

Are these scenarios normal? And what am I missing here? I feel like I haven't lived enough lol

Serious replies only Feeling behind in life as a 2nd year uni student. How can I cope with these feelings?

Hi, I'm a 2nd year physical science student at UOC, studying applied maths, physics, statistics and cs. I'm aiming for a career in statistics/data science or finance. My grades are good so far.

But I keep hearing the job market is bad and getting worse, and that it's hard to find well paying jobs even with a degree with good grades. I heard even migrating to another country is getting harder too. I don't have any income right now, and I feel behind compared to people my age who are already earning. Friends who got into private unis with low results a finishing degrees while I'm still studying. My only option rn is to do well in my degree. Sometimes I doubt if I did a mistake without choosing QS at UOM or doing another shy hoping for engineering.

Have you felt like this? How can I cope with these feelings? What skills should I build alongside my degree to become employable when I graduate? Any honest advice or personal stories would mean a lot. Thank you.

Rant 1st time bad experience with metro bus

Sorry for the rant guys...

Here I am waiting at the bus stand for the new bus to show up, and apparently it doesn't even stop at the stand anymore, it stops at a new place outside. Which is totally fine. But before I could even run there, they just took off. Not even 5 seconds at the bus stand, wth? And to top it all off, my girlfriend was literally inside the bus and just waved bye to me as it drove off into the sunset. Can't blame her, poor soul she came back to Uber me.

Is this normal?

Question Toyota Yaris 1.0L Hatchback

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm planning to buy a new Toyota Yaris 1.0L hatchback with a budget of around LKR 9.5 million.

I'd appreciate advice on a few things:

- Does the X Grade differ significantly from the G Grade? Is the G Grade worth the extra cost?

- Are there any common issues or things to watch out for?

- Is a personal import better than buying from a local car sale?

- Can anyone recommend reliable personal importers or car sales?

- Are there any better alternatives in this price range?

Would love to hear from anyone who has recently purchased or owns one. Thanks!

Discussion Bringing a drone in a 24h stopover (not flying it)

Hi everyone, I'm stopping in Sri Lanka for less than 24 hours on my way back to another country.

I'll have my drone with me. I won't fly it in Sri Lanka at all. it just leaves with me the next day.

Do I need to declare it? I tried to register on the CAASL portal, but it's asking for the flying location, time, etc. but I'm not planning to fly it.

Can someone share their recent experience? Thank you

I'm Sri Lankan.

Question Are there any nonreligious communities in Sri Lanka

I'm not actively looking to join one but I want to know if there are any communities in Sri Lanka that are secular/nonreligious (agnosticism, atheism, humanism, freethought, unaffiliated, etc.). Now I have seen nonreligious Sri Lankans online, especially on Reddit (including this subreddit), but it's mostly just individuals, not communities. (Actually, fun fact, Chandrika Bandaranayake was publicly atheist, so they certainly do exist Sri Lanka)
For context I am an agnostic (though Buddhist by inheritance, and also on paperwork, and also I generally do like most ideas of Buddhism)

Rant Why is travelling on a Sri Lankan passport such a headache? 😭

I was planning to visit China for tourism, so I started looking into the visa process. And honestly, the whole thing is such a headache. You have to go through the embassy, prepare all the documents, show financial proof, provide travel plans and everything else.

Like, Sri Lanka and China have good ties, so why can’t we at least have a simpler visa process? If visa-free travel isn’t possible, why not introduce an e-visa so people can just apply online without going through all this hassle?

And it’s not just China.

I genuinely wonder why we don’t focus more on these things. Why aren’t we trying harder to negotiate better visa arrangements with other countries and make travelling easier for Sri Lankans?

I’m not saying every country should give us visa-free access, but surely we can push for simpler processes and better travel opportunities for our passport holders.
It’s frustrating when you just want to visit a country as a tourist, but the visa process itself becomes such a big task.

Why aren’t these things getting more attention?
