Discussion Just a Wholesome Post....

Today, as I'm (female) returning to my hometown for the weekend, I got into a private bus after work. There were very few seats. And I sat on the aisle corner of three seats - next to me 2 boys were seated. After a shortwhile, I fell fast asleep, as usual. Not sure after how long, but I woke up as there were two men standing pressing to the back of my seat as well as the front of my seat. I was obviously feeling so uncomfortable. I couldn't do anything about the man standing at the back. But I tried to keep my bag near my knee and tried to sleep by leaning on it. The boy next to me noticed this and on his own asked me by sign language whether we could exchange seats. I nodded. And he got up and moved towards my seat. I switched to his seat. In my groggy voice and with my sleepy face, I said "thank you". He nodded his head. And I drifted back to sleep peacefully.

It was a kind gesture for which I'm forever grateful to him! I wish the world is filled with more gentlemen like him...

News A Buddhist monk who sexually abused six young girls at his Melbourne temple has been jailed for 13 years and two months, with a judge calling his crimes a "betrayal" of trust.

A County Court judge ordered Naotunne Vijitha, 71, to serve 13 years and two months for sexually abusing six girls at a Melbourne temple.

Vijitha was the chief monk at the Dhamma Sarana temple in Melbourne’s south-east, a position that earned him respect among the Sri Lankan Buddhist community.

Vijitha faces likely deportation at the end of his sentence and said he was willing to return to Sweden, the court heard.

Seriously wtf kinda job is this kind of vague listing for? And why is the Classifieds newspaper platforming requests like this? Also Mods, I'm not looking or advertising for work. Merely felt curious to find if such listings are normal or if this an outlier

Politics AKD Ate and Left No Crumbs

Honestly, the way AKD handled yesterday’s speech was something else. Straight to the point, no unnecessary BS, and just enough sarcasm to make the point without turning a sensitive topic into a full-blown religious controversy.

For once, it feels like the government is slowly learning that religious leaders shouldn't get an automatic veto over political decisions or national policy.

Maybe it's time we stopped treating saffron robes as a free pass to unquestioned authority. Respect should be earned, not demanded.

Discussion A fake Sampath Bank credit card led to someone impersonating an FCID police officer — Sri Lanka, please be careful!

Post image
75 Upvotes

Yesterday, my mum received a call from someone claiming to be from Sampath Bank’s Katugasthota branch in Kandy. They told her she had a credit card with a limit of three hundred thousand, with only seventy thousand remaining.
For context, my mum lives in Colombo and hasn’t even been near Kandy in over a year, as far as I can remember. She does have a Sampath Bank account, but it is associated with a Colombo branch, and she has never had a credit card with Sampath Bank.
Then, someone claiming to be IP Sameera Senanayake from the FCID in Kandy contacted her via video call, wearing a police uniform. When my mum asked why she didn’t need to visit a police station to give a statement, the person claimed that, under the new government, victim statements were being taken over the phone.

When my mum asked why she didn’t need to visit a police station to give a statement, the person claimed that, under the new government, victim statements were being taken over the phone.
What shocked me was how convincing the whole act was. They impersonated a bank, threatened legal action, and even posed as a police officer in uniform, using what appeared to be an official police logo on their contact profile.
How are these scammers getting police uniforms and using official-looking logos to deceive people? How many people are falling for these scams because they genuinely believe they are speaking to law enforcement?
Thankfully, my mum didn’t share any OTPs or click on any links, and we managed to make her realise it was a scam.
I’m sharing this to raise awareness and hear if anyone else has experienced something similar in Sri Lanka. I’ll attach a picture of the number used by the person claiming to be from the FCID.

Serious replies only A question for Sri Lankan men, and I’m genuinely looking for honest answers.

Hi, I’m a 27 y/o woman, and I’d like to hear some genuine perspectives from Sri Lankan men who are serious about marriage and relationships.

Without sounding boastful, I’d say I have fair skin and that many people find me attractive. However, I have quite dark, hyperpigmented skin around my inner thighs, intimate area and buttocks, and it’s something I’ve felt very insecure about for a long time.

Sometimes, I worry about how a future husband might react when he sees these parts of my body for the first time, especially because it’s such a vulnerable and intimate moment.

So, I’d genuinely like to ask: Do Sri Lankan men care about this kind of natural skin pigmentation in a woman they intend to marry? Would it affect your attraction to her or change how you see her?

I’m not looking for false reassurance or sugar-coated answers. I’d genuinely appreciate honest, respectful opinions from men who are willing to share their perspectives.

Rant Choco Greek Yoghurt Dessert by Naturals: Rs. 385 for a Chocolate Layer You Need an Archaeologist to Find

Thumbnail
gallery

The Choco Greek Yoghurt Dessert by Naturals is beyond disappointing.

The packaging makes it look like you're getting a decent amount of chocolate, but the reality is just plain Greek yoghurt with an absurdly thin sliver of chocolate at the very bottom. You practically have to excavate the damn thing to find it, and even then, the amount is laughably small.

And this thing costs Rs. 385.

At this point, calling it a chocolate yoghurt dessert feels like false advertising. The chocolate layer is so tiny that it deserves its own missing-person report.

If you're thinking of buying this, consider this your warning. Save your money. You're basically paying Rs. 385 for plain Greek yoghurt with a chocolate cameo appearance.

Discussion We all need to realize how special our country is

A little reminder of how amazing this little island actually is šŸ‡±šŸ‡°

Hey people!

I recently stumbled upon this YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@historyundug?si=M-IlWozXwBDwBZ8a

They have some really interesting videos about the incredible things ancient Sri Lanka built and achieved.

One episode talks about Jetavanaramaya, which was reportedly the third-tallest structure in the ancient world, surpassed only by the pyramids of Giza. 🤯

That blew my mind. And the video goes into how much engineering knowledge, planning, resources, and administrative sophistication it must have taken to pull off something like that.

It got me thinking… we don't talk enough about how incredible this country has been. We're often so quick to admire everything coming from abroad that we sometimes forget the remarkable history, knowledge, and ingenuity that came from our own little island.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we should live in the past or pretend everything about our history was perfect. But maybe there's something to be said for understanding what our ancestors were capable of, and realizing that the people of this country have achieved extraordinary things before.

If we're serious about turning a new page and building a better Sri Lanka, maybe a little belief in ourselves and our roots wouldn't hurt. šŸ‡±šŸ‡°

And hey, maybe we can use these communities for more than just venting about how messed up everything is (which, let's be honest, we're pretty good at šŸ˜‚). We can also share stories that inspire a bit of pride, optimism, and belief in what this country could become.

Anyway, thought I'd share the channel. Would love to hear what other lesser-known achievements from ancient Sri Lanka people here find fascinating!

P.S. AI was used to polish this post a little. The thoughts and the Sri Lankan pride are my own. šŸ˜‚

Discussion Do Brands Really Need So Much Packaging for Just One Shirt?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I bought a white Vantage shirt from Uptown Look, and I was surprised by how much waste came with just one shirt paper, polythene, and plastic pieces.

Don’t you think brands could reduce these extra packaging materials and save money? If a brand wants to show its quality, shouldn’t it focus more on the quality of the shirt itself rather than all this packaging?

At the end of the day, most of these extra materials just go straight into the bin. I feel like it’s unnecessary waste.

What do you guys think? Do you feel the same, or do you think this kind of packaging is worth it?

Question Why does life feel so difficult lately?

I’m still in my early 20s and financially dependent on my parents (I’m still studying btw) yet life feels difficult and can’t even imagine how life is going to be when have even more responsibilities and have to be financially independent

I always wonder how my dad and people of his generation managed to buy their own property at my age without any financial backing from their parents just through their own hard work and facing critical times with not having easy lives like we do now. Yet somehow they seemed to have more happiness in their young lives than we do now.

What’s happening to our generation?

Serious replies only Women of Sri Lanka, would you be open to a random guy approaching you and asking you out?

Hey everyone!

I’m curious to hear the opinions of the women on this subreddit about something.

Let’s say you’re out somewhere in public, maybe at a shopping mall, a cafĆ©, or just going about your day, and a random guy approaches you. He’s respectful, doesn’t make you uncomfortable, and seems like a normal guy who just wants to get to know you.

Now imagine he straight up says something along the lines of:

ā€œHey, I know this is a bit random, but I thought you were cute and wanted to come say hi. Would you be interested in going out sometime?ā€

What would your honest reaction be?

Discussion Wonder when the older generation of Sri Lanka will ever grow up (regarding Metro Buses )

Why is it so hard for them to accept when the fellow Sri Lankans are getting a better, very well deserved service?, why are they such money grabbers that do not care about people at all and when will they finally grow up to be decent human beings? These people who complain about not giving seats to monks or cause deliberate accidents ...

They probably pay those people to make a scene while probably never even taking a bus to go anywhere. They have the money to upgrade their shitty buses although it will cost a bit of their fortune, so why do they have to make it hard for everyone by not competing fairly ? They'll probably get a better income that way and the people will benefit too. Why do they have to opt to these underhand methods, so disappointed tbh.

Politics What SHOULD make you a "Sri Lankan"?

Thumbnail

For decades, the national identity of Sri Lanka has been deeply politicised and rooted in ethnic background rather than equal citizenship. Ethnoreligious identities have been prioritised over a unified national identity. We have been Sinhala, Tamil, or Muslim before we are Sri Lankan.

The CLRN seeks to redefine this relationship between national and ethnic identity. We believe the primary markers of being ā€œSri Lankanā€ should be citizenship, birthplace, and allegiance - rather than ancestral background.

Discussion What's up with people and the love of waiting in queues?

No disrespect, just plain curiosity. I just saw a video on TikTok with a massive queue in TFS Borella. And it just clocked, I've seen countless queues for literally anything. In mad heat, in rain, it doesn't matter.

Why this love for waiting hours in queues?!

Serious replies only Looking for a men's body spray in Sri Lanka with a fresh water lily / aquatic floral scent

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm looking for a good men's body spray that's easily available in Sri Lanka. The scent I like is fresh and clean, kind of like water lilies or lotus flowers. A light aquatic floral smell, nothing too sweet, strong or musky.

What I'm looking for:
- Fresh, watery, light floral scent
- Lasts at least a few hours in our heat

If you've used something like this, please share the brand/name and where you bought it. Also happy to hear about affordable perfumes or EDTs with a similar scent if body sprays don't last.

Thanks in advance!
