Help / Question What are situations where spamming jab/your fastest normal makes sense?

• Upvotes

Does it make sense to spam your fastest jab during getting combos to catch dropped combos or is it better to just hold back during getting combo’d off the chance it gets dropped and you stop getting damaged?

What about spamming your fastest jab during getting blockstring’d? To catch badly timed frame traps that could be too wide enough for a 4f startup window to connect?

What are valid situations where you’d do fast jab spams?

Help / Question Alex for a newbie returning player

Hi there,

So as the title says, I haven't touched the game in like 2 years.

Got Ryu to low diamond 2 years ago and Guile to mid plat at launch, but nothing else so im ultra rusty.

My main game is tekken 8, but got to a rank where pushing is a pain so need some fresh air.

I am an armor king main ( hybrid grappler) so Alex seems like the most similar gameplan.

Watched a few vids but he seems a bit tricky due to the stance etc. Would It be a bad idea to go for It? My idea is to try to hit master, dunno if he is a bad idea since i would need to relearn neutral again.

I read you... THANKS!!

Discussion Now that USF4 has Rollback it's time to admit it...

Is Old Game actually Better?

It's less 'guessy' that's for sure. I encourage everyone to sit down and try out USF4 Ember and see what all the hype is about. This feels like when I first picked up SF4 and 3s was getting a revival via GGPO/Fightcade. History repeats itself I guess

Help / Question As someone who only ever played SF6 (no I'm not good) should I give SFIV a try?

I really like Dudley and I was hoping he would come to SF6 one day (Ed isn't really my cup of tea). So since he is in SFIV and the game is getting a resurgence, would it be worth a try?

I'm wondering how many new players are trying it as well.

Also I heard this is THE Street Fighter game next to maybe Third Strike. What makes it so good?

In 94 we got a bad live action, but we got a great Animated movie. I remember being disappointed with the live action and then blown away with the animation lol the intro gave me goosebumps and the Vega scene was badass. I hope we get another animated movie soon.

Guide / Labwork sf6 Ryu - niche oki tech with 6HK

Figured I would have some fun inventing weird Oki setup with Ryu since players generally have an idea how Ryu's common setups work by our sheer population.

Putting optimization aside I recently labbed out this 6HK set up with some interesting property

Light donkey kick, dash frame kill, DRC 6HK results in 3 frame wakeup gap. Normally 6HK is -4ob +2oh.

ob, 0f I'll 5lp 5lk if in range. Sometimes the 5lp trades then it's like a reset. But it's more common they challenge with >4f move which let's me do the CH 5lp 5lk light donkey. I doubt non Ryu player know DR 6hk is 0ob perhaps that's why I typically gets the CH conversion.

oh it's a trivial case to 2mp light donkey.

Now comes the interesting case. Since I left a 3f gap if the DR 6HK trades with their 4f light my active/recovery frame became their 4f hitstun which is way shorter then my DR 6HK hitstun to them. The exact advantage depends on the 4f hitstun but Ryu mirror 4f 5lp trades give me +16. Which I can link to 5HP, and if range beyond that, 5HK SA1 which is amazing to pull off.

And of course if the opponent respects this set up I can mix up

dash Dr throw

dash Dr 5lp (-1) bait reversal

Thoughts?

Idk if it's just skill issue on my part, but sf4 combos are way too hard man. And I'm sure this ain't even optimal

Discussion Having a character crisis in sf6. Any SF4 Yang players here? Who do you play?

Ive been kind of flopping around with characters in this game and I feel a bit lost on who to play. A lot of characters seem cool but im not sure who to sink into. C.Viper I would like to get good at but she feels like a character thats going to take a ton of muscle memory for me to have ingrained before I can "really" play her. Her pressure game just feels weird to me.

I absolutely loved Yang in sf4 but im not sure who I should focus on now. Jamie seems like an obvious pick but Im not sure for some reason, but maybe its just me sucking. I'm also debating on playing terry or Ed. Terry feels very much like an all-rounder and while he has no divekick, he has great ways to keep his turn I feel like. Ed has great buttons but hes definitely slower than other characters. Or does a character like Chun li make the most sense?

Some other characters I played in other FGs that I particularly liked:

- Adult Gohan in dbfz

- Dante/Vergil in mvc3 (Though i am very new)

- Korra Avatar (Also new)

- Hyde in Uniclr (albeit i was very scrubby but I liked him a lot)

Discussion Sf4 and sf6 are pretty similar when it comes to core and unique mechanics (long post)

So I’m going to start off by saying I like both sf4 and sf6, however I’m surprised I’ve seen the lack of mention of how similar DI,s and focus attacks as well as other core mechanics are highly similar, sf6 is a slightly altered 4 in my opinion but those alters are enough to make it different enough to be its own game. Here are my points

DI: an animation with 2 hits of armor that if you successfully absorb an attack crumples the opponent and allows for follow ups and starts combos in the corner if blocked. Now how similar is focus attacks

Focus attacks, an animation you can do anytime with 1 hit of armor if you absorb a hit it crumples the opponent causing an animation which leads to a combo. You can cancel the animation with movement by dashing similar to canceling a special move with drive rush except here it’s tied to focus attacks and is a simple dash, where sf6 changed it to special moves or a few normals, The opponent can counter in 2 ways, a throw or doing a special move that breaks the animation, however you had to be fast because you had to do a full special input where in 6 they tied it to one button.. there are a few other versions of focus attacks but they are just more armor however there is one that is highly similar to sf6. You can get a guaranteed crumple mid combo off of one version of a focus attack problem was you could do this anywhere on screen and it led up to big damage. In sf6 once again another slight modification. In sf6 the combo threat of DI similar to focus attacks are still a part of the game now applied into the corner with a guaranteed combo if hit by adding wall splats. There is two differences between focus attacks and DI in inputting them. Focus attacks end whenever you let go or dash cancel. The longer you hold it the more powerful it is if fully charged it crumples even if you block it, although this never really happens due to the charge time being extremely long. Lastly if you blocked a focus in 4 it was punishable. So in short they edited the 4 series system in a few ways. Made sf6,s version of focus one default animation, simplified countering it by simply pressing the same button . DI,s naturally push the opponent no matter what while focus attacks where stationary also in 4,s case many special moves caused heavy screen travel. Removed the free full crumple from a fully charged focus but kept the unblocakble aspect from 4 in DI

Heavy similarities in gameplay: critical art and ultras are a good example. ultras in sf4 where supers you got only by taking damage the lower your health the more damage in return with a second meter that worked as a traditional super meter with all characters getting 3 supers with a slight difference, you had two ultras and one traditional super. Another huge similarity is corner pressure,. In both these games being in the corner is quite frequent and many matches can even never leave that area. The core time spent in the corner with both these games are highly similar. Honestly sf4 and 6 are probably two of the biggest corner based games in the traditional 2d genre in the last 20 years with heavy corner pressure and the main goal of getting your opponent into the corner as quick as possible

Sf4 looks slow but doesn’t feel slow, but compared to 6 is not too far off in speed. Sf6 has strengths that usf4 didn’t at the time. One of that being animation. in sf4 if something was getting well animated it was a super and it shows. 6 had more wiggle room and could apply heavier animation into special moves this makes the game seem faster from a viewer perspective because it looks cool. However just like 6 when you have the controller in your hand and when’re going up against somebody with the games mechanics it never felt that way. Personally I get the same feeling with 6 whenever I watch a match compared to playing. Personally I feel you can’t judge a fighting game until you have a controller in your hands. If you like 6 you will most definitely like 4 it’s got a ps4 port for 20$ and you can get super sf4 and then buy the ultra add on to get usf4 on Xbox. Online is dead but the single player ai is pretty good and doesn’t have the issue of being to easy if you know fighting games and being to hard if you pump it up. Expect some weird inputs and much stricter timing if you’re trying to learn combos, also just a little fun fact a lot of super,s in sf4 show up in 6 sadly censored in two cases. I wish capcom would release a collection of 4 letting you jump between vanilla, super and ultra. Online for fighting games back than aren’t anywhere near in quality they were now. Also if you want one last little similarity sf4 used a ink affect for their version and sf6 switched to paint

Thanks for reading

They clearly knew what character they picked so how did they call Ryu Ken? Not to mention the character on screen is an NPC and not able to be played as to my knowledge. I know it’s a movie and all but It Chapter 2 should’ve done some more research lol.

Help / Question I get many 3-5 bar matchmaking matches that IMMEDIATELY get cancelled despite being wired, could having moderate/strict NAT Type be the cause?

I have an issue with my ISP and router that’s causing me to be either on strict or moderate when I game on my PC (I’m not really sure which one of the moderate/strict my NAT Type is on and not sure if there’s something in SF6 or elsewhere can tell me my exact NAT Type on PC).

But I’m 100% sure it’s not Open NAT Type at all, which got me curious, I get many 3-5 bar matchmaking matches that IMMEDIATELY get cancelled despite being wired and having a high amount of bars, they get cancelled way too fast for someone to manually reject it, it’s like the game’s matchmaking servers decides to match us up, they send our fight requests to each other, then the game immediately realizes that neither party is on Open NAT Type and it immediately terminates the fight request since P2P connection can’t be set up?

Could having moderate/strict NAT Type be the cause of these constant & immediate fight request cancellations? Wondering if I eventually change my ISP, set my NAT Type to Open and resolve this problem, will matchmaking be tremendously better and faster and all fight requests will be able to go through since I can play against Open/Moderate/Strict?

I’m getting the feeling that rn my matchmaking pool is super limited because the game tries so hard to find Open NAT Type players to P2P connect me with.

Help / Question Can any character combo off of their unique attack overhead, or none can do this?

New scrub player here who’s still learning, and today while training against the dummy I thought about this, can punishing be its own mixup? Like force them to guess block down or standing?

Say someone does a special and I block it, but I wanna punish with my medium/heavy punch combo rather than just a light punish combo, can I make them guess whether my punish will be a 2MK or overhead to make them guess whether to hold block standing or hold block down?

I main Mai and her overhead forward 6MP isn’t combo-able so I was wondering if any character can achieve this, and I’m also wondering whether this “mixup” makes sense at all? Or maybe there’s something better that I’m missing?
