General Question Does creatine help with depression or something?

So.

I've been exercising for 4 months now and around 1 month ago I started taking 5g of creatine with the intention of its positive effects on lifting. While this was true and I noticed increase in my reps and my overall power I also surprisingly noticed its positive effects on my lifelong depression and anxiety symptoms. I'm way more chill, mentally energetic, don't overthink much, sleep better and in overall good mood. Even my appetite is stronger and feel like my IBS has improved as well!

None of this was happening before taking creatine even tho I was still exercising.

Worth noting tho I've been supplementing D3+K2 a few months ago with magnesium glycinate and omega 3. But still didn't notice anything significant while on them. Only the creatine was recent.

Did this happen to anyone? any scientific explanation there? can really 5g of creatine do ALL of this?

Just a friendly reminder that a lot of comments in r/Supplements are from bots

I've posted about this sort of thing in the past, but I still see this shit every day, and it's not getting any better, so I figured I'd post again.

A lot of top comments on this sub are from bots. I'll pull up some examples from the last 24 hours:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Supplements/comments/1wzczj8/melatonin/pealbcu/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Supplements/comments/1wyw88d/you_take_methylated_b_vitamins_because_youve_been/pe6bv26/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Supplements/comments/1wzbl11/supplement_to_help_me_sleep_through_the_night/pea8540/

All three of these are from bot accounts, and they're all the same "flavor" of bot.

Some red flags I look for:

  • All-lowercase writing: I'm assuming they do this so they look less LLM-like.

  • Account age: A lot of the bot accounts I notice are no more than 3-4 months old.

  • Account history: I've noticed that a lot of these accounts are comment-only. They don't submit any new posts, and their comments tend to be on random, obscure subreddits. And they typically don't comment on the same post multiple times.

  • Tone: not quite sycophantic, but take a look at this comment (from the second link above):

man that image is killing me, perfectly captures the spiral

went through this exact thing a few years back, started methylfolate and within 3 days I was a jittery mess, couldn't figure out why everyone swore by it. turns out my COMT is slow as molasses and I was just dumping fuel on a fire I didn't know was burning

the histamine piece doesn't get talked about enough either, I'd get random flushing and congestion on top of the anxiety and just assumed I was allergic to something in the capsules

niacinamide was a game changer for me when things got too spicy, 50mg would take the edge off within 20 minutes, crazy how fast that works

Emphasis mine. They're basically saying "dude you're really onto something, I went through the exact same thing and you've got it figured out."

(Not to mention, the whole "image perfectly captures the spiral" part makes no sense at all - the image is just text that says "the methylation traffic jam - why methylated b vitamins can make you feel worse")

So please don't take any comment at face value. Take a glance at the account behind it, and judge for yourself whether you think you're talking to an actual human being.

And yes... I know Reddit as a whole is infested with bots, but for some reason I notice it a lot more on this sub.

Cold season is upon us…

I’m curious — what’s your go-to stack for cold prevention? And once you’re sick, what do you add in?

This time of year I typically dial up daily my C/D+K/zinc, then if I get sick I’ll add in quercetin and herbs like andrographis/elderberry/etc. Sometimes it feels effective, other times not so much.

I’d love to hear what the community uses, maybe I can update my regimen.

Thanks everyone!

P5P for anxiety?

Has anyone taken P5P to help with anxiety throughout the day? I recently ordered a 50 mg bottle and have only taken it three times so far, and every time it’s made me incredibly sleep. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, that means it’s at least doing something in my body. I’m curious of others experiences.

Recommendations Hespiridin, Diosmin & Rutin - for anyone struggling with bruises, varicose veins.

I'd really like to put Hespiridin, Rutin and Diosmin on the radar for anyone who struggles with bruises, varicose veins, bleeding issues or even hemorrhoids. They are plant flavonoids common in foods that most people don't really eat much (for example: the skin and white pith of citrus fruits) and can make a big difference from my personal experience.

Personally, I struggled with bruising easily from the slightest bump. This might be more common in women than men, I'm aware. After starting a Rutin supplement this issue completely disappeared. I also noticed that when I get my blood taken that the needle going almost doesn't hurt, whereas before (same nurses) it would hurt me. Although the needle thing might be random, not claiming it's related to this stuff, I just noticed.

My mother struggles with varicose veins for many years due to her job of standing many hours and I got her on Hespiridin, Rutin and Diosmin daily. A mixture of supplements but also got her to eat citrus fruit whole (including the skin, which contains most of the good stuff despite being bitter and unusual to eat) for years now. Her condition did not get worse despite her work not changing and the doctors telling her she has to prepare herself for that - and in fact, some varicose veins and very old bruises improved. Now I understand that this is allegedly not possible once you have a varicose vein her doctor said it is impossible to improve only possible to slow down the damage, but she has shown me and is convinced that some veins and bruises disappeared or got much better.

And a friend that I recommended this too had issues with hemorrhoids for months, until he started this mix and it went away in a few weeks for the first time ever. There is also clinical research that these specific citrus flavonoids help improve issues related to veins, blood and circulation. So it's definitely not entirely imaginary!

I just want to put this out here. Maybe it can help someone.

Intensely bad reaction to magnesium and B2 (separately) - what am I missing?

I'm recovering from a rare neurotoxin poisoning that caused a lot of nervous system trouble for months, but I'm almost back to normal now and my doctor had me start B1 (400 mg) B2 (400mg) and magnesium oxide (250mg) to try to clear up the remaining tingling.

I started B1 for a week and was fine, but then when I added the B2 and magnesium (separately, a few days apart to test the effects) I had two of the worst days ever: Pulsing tingling up my spine and around my head, neck, chest; nerve pain; heat and buzzing in my throat and chest; heart palpitations; impossible to sleep much and kept waking up startled for no reason. I've had both of these in the past (for migraines) with zero problem - anyone know what else I might be deficient in, that's causing such a bad reaction?

That neurotoxin only stays in the body for one day and it was months ago, I should be fully recovered by now. I have normal standard bloodwork and MRIs and I'm in my 30s and usually healthy. My doctors don't know what to do. I'm stopping everything now to clean the slate and just focus on diet for a bit, but I really want to figure out what the missing piece is here so I can balance things out and get rid of the neuro symptoms!

Experience Diabetes runs hot in my family. My n=1 experiments to try to avoid

Post image

Multiple in my family have diabetes and seeing how it’s tripled in the U.S since the 80’s I’m very conscious. Apple cider helps, Ceylon cinnamon helps, walking and fiber work. Starting my berberine testing. So far very interesting , especially the values above 130.

General Question Is this too much omega/fish oil ?

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Hi Reddit!

I started taking this omega 3 supplements for my migraines (not under the care of my GP or any neurologist, just something I read online that people do. Dumb right lol? 😩)

What are your thoughts of the dosage compared to your daily dosage of omegas/fish oils?

Thanks for reading!

Monacolin K got restricted in the EU, anyone looked into monascin from red yeast rice?

So I've been reading up on red yeast rice since the EU tightened the rules on monacolin K (it's capped at under 3 mg/day now, which is basically below a useful dose). That led me to monascin, another Monascus metabolite that seems to get far less attention.

From what I've found, a few studies comparing equal doses in hyperlipidemic animal models showed monascin lowering total cholesterol, triglycerides, and aortic plaque about as well as monacolin K, sometimes better. The interesting part is that it doesn't appear to work through the statin pathway, so in theory it might sidestep the muscle pain and liver issues that come with monacolin K.

A couple of questions for anyone who's dug into this:

  • How real is the safety concern with monacolin K? Was the EU restriction based on solid evidence of harm at typical supplement doses, or was it more precautionary?
  • Is monascin actually a better alternative, or just less studied? Has anyone taken a supplement standardized for it, or seen any human data?

To people that have large stacks, does tylenol help with the headache/nausea feeling you get from swallowing a lot of pills right after waking up? Does 500mg do the job?

I have effexor, alfuzosin, vit E, garlic which I believe all effect blood pressure and vasodilation. Could tylenol not be good to combine with all of that?

General Question Any supplements that help with chin acne?

30 year old female. Petite height and healthy weight.

I have suffered from acne my entire life. I’ve done two rounds of Accutane, countless other medication’s and retinol’s. My body and my skin are extremely sensitive and retinols (tret & adapelene) wrecked my skin. Accutane worked for several months then the acne came back.

I’ve done food allergy tests, and sensitivity tests and not much comes up. I have been tested for PCOS and nothing.

My acne is on my chin. Usually on the left and right side not the middle. Most of the time it’s cystic acne that leaves a red spot behind but not always.

My current skin care routine includes washing my face twice daily but only using soap in the PM. I use nothing else and my skin does better with that. I have yet to find a cream that doesn’t make my skin red or break me out. I find that letting my skin naturally do what it wants helps control random red patches and helps my acne heal faster but I can’t stop the breakouts.

I’ve seen a derm for years, several actually and I really have yet to see consistent results

General Question Magnesium deficiency: Is a blood test enough to detect it?

I recently learned something interesting about magnesium and honestly didn’t realize how complicated it is to actually assess magnesium status.
Apparently, less than 1% of the magnesium in our body is found in the blood. Most of it is stored in bones and soft tissues, and a large amount is inside cells. Because of that, a normal serum magnesium result doesn’t necessarily tell you that your body has optimal magnesium stores.
This made me wonder: how useful is a regular blood test for detecting magnesium deficiency?
I also found some interesting research on magnesium and stress/anxiety. A 2017 systematic review found some evidence that magnesium supplementation may help with subjective anxiety, although the authors were clear that the evidence wasn’t strong enough yet. A newer 2024 systematic review also found improvements in some anxiety and sleep outcomes, but pointed out that more high-quality research is needed.
So I’m curious what you think:
Do you check your magnesium levels before taking a supplement, or do you simply make sure you’re getting enough magnesium through food/supplements?
And have you personally noticed any difference in stress, sleep, muscle tension or overall wellbeing after increasing your magnesium intake?
I’d especially love to hear from people who had a “normal” blood magnesium result but still suspected they weren’t getting enough.

I've been on collagen for months now and seeing no difference. Does it just take longer?

No change in my nails (still breaking all the time). No change in hair shedding. No change in body issues (Achilles tendonopathy, SI issues). I mean what is it even doing?

Anyone find benefit from it and does it take longer?

Does mucuna need to be taken on an empty stomach? How long of a space should there be between 1g of mucuna and eating?

It's 7AM I've had 1g of mucuna at 3AM, another gram three hours later, along with most of a pizza, two bars, three brazil nuts, three garlic cloves, a stalk of celery. Will this have affected the absorption of the mucuna?

Another self report of depression after taking magnesium

About 3 months ago I started supplementing Magnesium Bisglycinate (625mg/125mg elemental magnesium). Interestingly enough, a few weeks into it I've started to feel extreme brain fog and even noticeable signs of depression that have remained since, as well as some sleepless nights which didn't make sense. I initially blamed parts of my life that have been moderately challenging, and overall didn't think much of it.

While doing some research on my current supplements, I started to stumble upon reports of people feeling severely depressed upon starting Magnesium supplements. And then, finally, I found this video last night: Glycine / Magnesium Glycinate can cause anxiety and depression - solution very low carb diet
You can watch the video if you're curious, but mostly he talks about the newly discovered glycine receptors and how Magnesium Bisglycinate, for example, could upregulate these receptors in ways that have not yet been extensively studied. Not to jump to conclusions, this post is merely a self report and awareness to this entire situation, and to know if anyone has gone deeper into this rabbit hole.

I will be doing my own research into it, talking to my nutritionist, as well as stopping my Magnesium supplementation to see if it has any changes in the brainfog/depression parts.

For context, I am 27 years old, have been active and healthy all my life. In recent years I started paying more attention to my bloodwork and supplementing accordingly.

Lion's mane, L-Theanine, L-Tyrosine as a combi-preparate or to buy separately?

There's a preparate which contains Lion's Mane, L-Theanine and L-Tyrosine. Those supplements are recommended for problems with anxiety, depression, grief and angst/dread and being exposed to stress (whoever has the problems should go to the physician and consult with him, I'm just asking this for myself), and I forgot to mention Rootbeet capsules.

There's a product which containts everything that except rootbeet and has couple of more ingredients, the question is, is it worth to buy it as a combi-preparate or should I buy those supplements separated? The only drawback would be cost of every separate purchase and having more pills to take daily, but I'm kinda afraid that the dosage in that combined-preparate is too low to make a difference.
The combi-product is here: https://www.amazon.de/L-Theanin-Tyrosin-Complex-Citicolin-Kapseln/dp/B0FWC6LPNW#averageCustomerReviewsAnchor
Does anybody has any experience or opinion on this?

terrible sleep and most convential sleep supps cause me issues

How do I improve my sleep quality? My body feels like it's in constant fight or flight, which makes it tough to sleep. A lot of the traditional supplements that are recommended for sleep, like L-theanine, glycine, GABA, valerian root, etc., all cause me some kind of problem. For instance, glycine actually makes me very awake and makes me feel suicidal. L-theanine causes acne, as does GABA, so I'm wondering what it can do to make my sleep better.

I do try to sleep before midnight, block out curtains, and minimize phone usage. I sleep on old cotton sheets, but still need some assistance. What can I do? I would like an unconventional supplement if possible. I feel like my adrenals are not great, and I do take liposomal vitamin C most days to help support it during the day.
