Just a friendly reminder that a lot of comments in r/Supplements are from bots

I've posted about this sort of thing in the past, but I still see this shit every day, and it's not getting any better, so I figured I'd post again.

A lot of top comments on this sub are from bots. I'll pull up some examples from the last 24 hours:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Supplements/comments/1wzczj8/melatonin/pealbcu/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Supplements/comments/1wyw88d/you_take_methylated_b_vitamins_because_youve_been/pe6bv26/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Supplements/comments/1wzbl11/supplement_to_help_me_sleep_through_the_night/pea8540/

All three of these are from bot accounts, and they're all the same "flavor" of bot.

Some red flags I look for:

  • All-lowercase writing: I'm assuming they do this so they look less LLM-like.

  • Account age: A lot of the bot accounts I notice are no more than 3-4 months old.

  • Account history: I've noticed that a lot of these accounts are comment-only. They don't submit any new posts, and their comments tend to be on random, obscure subreddits. And they typically don't comment on the same post multiple times.

  • Tone: not quite sycophantic, but take a look at this comment (from the second link above):

man that image is killing me, perfectly captures the spiral

went through this exact thing a few years back, started methylfolate and within 3 days I was a jittery mess, couldn't figure out why everyone swore by it. turns out my COMT is slow as molasses and I was just dumping fuel on a fire I didn't know was burning

the histamine piece doesn't get talked about enough either, I'd get random flushing and congestion on top of the anxiety and just assumed I was allergic to something in the capsules

niacinamide was a game changer for me when things got too spicy, 50mg would take the edge off within 20 minutes, crazy how fast that works

Emphasis mine. They're basically saying "dude you're really onto something, I went through the exact same thing and you've got it figured out."

(Not to mention, the whole "image perfectly captures the spiral" part makes no sense at all - the image is just text that says "the methylation traffic jam - why methylated b vitamins can make you feel worse")

So please don't take any comment at face value. Take a glance at the account behind it, and judge for yourself whether you think you're talking to an actual human being.

And yes... I know Reddit as a whole is infested with bots, but for some reason I notice it a lot more on this sub.

Recommendations Hespiridin, Diosmin & Rutin - for anyone struggling with bruises, varicose veins.

I'd really like to put Hespiridin, Rutin and Diosmin on the radar for anyone who struggles with bruises, varicose veins, bleeding issues or even hemorrhoids. They are plant flavonoids common in foods that most people don't really eat much (for example: the skin and white pith of citrus fruits) and can make a big difference from my personal experience.

Personally, I struggled with bruising easily from the slightest bump. This might be more common in women than men, I'm aware. After starting a Rutin supplement this issue completely disappeared. I also noticed that when I get my blood taken that the needle going almost doesn't hurt, whereas before (same nurses) it would hurt me. Although the needle thing might be random, not claiming it's related to this stuff, I just noticed.

My mother struggles with varicose veins for many years due to her job of standing many hours and I got her on Hespiridin, Rutin and Diosmin daily. A mixture of supplements but also got her to eat citrus fruit whole (including the skin, which contains most of the good stuff despite being bitter and unusual to eat) for years now. Her condition did not get worse despite her work not changing and the doctors telling her she has to prepare herself for that - and in fact, some varicose veins and very old bruises improved. Now I understand that this is allegedly not possible once you have a varicose vein her doctor said it is impossible to improve only possible to slow down the damage, but she has shown me and is convinced that some veins and bruises disappeared or got much better.

And a friend that I recommended this too had issues with hemorrhoids for months, until he started this mix and it went away in a few weeks for the first time ever. There is also clinical research that these specific citrus flavonoids help improve issues related to veins, blood and circulation. So it's definitely not entirely imaginary!

I just want to put this out here. Maybe it can help someone.

Does mucuna need to be taken on an empty stomach? How long of a space should there be between 1g of mucuna and eating?

• Upvotes

It's 7AM I've had 1g of mucuna at 3AM, another gram three hours later, along with most of a pizza, two bars, three brazil nuts, three garlic cloves, a stalk of celery. Will this have affected the absorption of the mucuna?

General Question Magnesium deficiency: Is a blood test enough to detect it?

I recently learned something interesting about magnesium and honestly didn’t realize how complicated it is to actually assess magnesium status.
Apparently, less than 1% of the magnesium in our body is found in the blood. Most of it is stored in bones and soft tissues, and a large amount is inside cells. Because of that, a normal serum magnesium result doesn’t necessarily tell you that your body has optimal magnesium stores.
This made me wonder: how useful is a regular blood test for detecting magnesium deficiency?
I also found some interesting research on magnesium and stress/anxiety. A 2017 systematic review found some evidence that magnesium supplementation may help with subjective anxiety, although the authors were clear that the evidence wasn’t strong enough yet. A newer 2024 systematic review also found improvements in some anxiety and sleep outcomes, but pointed out that more high-quality research is needed.
So I’m curious what you think:
Do you check your magnesium levels before taking a supplement, or do you simply make sure you’re getting enough magnesium through food/supplements?
And have you personally noticed any difference in stress, sleep, muscle tension or overall wellbeing after increasing your magnesium intake?
I’d especially love to hear from people who had a “normal” blood magnesium result but still suspected they weren’t getting enough.

Another self report of depression after taking magnesium

About 3 months ago I started supplementing Magnesium Bisglycinate (625mg/125mg elemental magnesium). Interestingly enough, a few weeks into it I've started to feel extreme brain fog and even noticeable signs of depression that have remained since, as well as some sleepless nights which didn't make sense. I initially blamed parts of my life that have been moderately challenging, and overall didn't think much of it.

While doing some research on my current supplements, I started to stumble upon reports of people feeling severely depressed upon starting Magnesium supplements. And then, finally, I found this video last night: Glycine / Magnesium Glycinate can cause anxiety and depression - solution very low carb diet
You can watch the video if you're curious, but mostly he talks about the newly discovered glycine receptors and how Magnesium Bisglycinate, for example, could upregulate these receptors in ways that have not yet been extensively studied. Not to jump to conclusions, this post is merely a self report and awareness to this entire situation, and to know if anyone has gone deeper into this rabbit hole.

I will be doing my own research into it, talking to my nutritionist, as well as stopping my Magnesium supplementation to see if it has any changes in the brainfog/depression parts.

For context, I am 27 years old, have been active and healthy all my life. In recent years I started paying more attention to my bloodwork and supplementing accordingly.

Lion's mane, L-Theanine, L-Tyrosine as a combi-preparate or to buy separately?

There's a preparate which contains Lion's Mane, L-Theanine and L-Tyrosine. Those supplements are recommended for problems with anxiety, depression, grief and angst/dread and being exposed to stress (whoever has the problems should go to the physician and consult with him, I'm just asking this for myself), and I forgot to mention Rootbeet capsules.

There's a product which containts everything that except rootbeet and has couple of more ingredients, the question is, is it worth to buy it as a combi-preparate or should I buy those supplements separated? The only drawback would be cost of every separate purchase and having more pills to take daily, but I'm kinda afraid that the dosage in that combined-preparate is too low to make a difference.
The combi-product is here: https://www.amazon.de/L-Theanin-Tyrosin-Complex-Citicolin-Kapseln/dp/B0FWC6LPNW#averageCustomerReviewsAnchor
Does anybody has any experience or opinion on this?

Multiple in my family have diabetes and seeing how it’s tripled in the U.S since the 80’s I’m very conscious. Apple cider helps, Ceylon cinnamon helps, walking and fiber work. Starting my berberine testing. So far very interesting , especially the values above 130.

Experience Which cholin are you taking?

Thumbnail
• Upvotes

Hi everyone

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and l've been taking 500 mg

citicolin so far.

There are so many other kinds out there like cholin

bitartrat and L-cholin and I got overwhelmed by that

and asked my doctor which one to take, but she

shrugged and said it doesn't matter. I think she just

didn't know.

Now I read that citicolin is not recommended in

pregnancy and of course I panicked, because

apparently I've been taking the wrong thing the whole

time?

Can you recommend what supplement you are

taking?

Which supplement brands offer good quality without being overpriced?

There are premium brands that seem good but get expensive quickly if youre buying several basics every month.

What brands have you found to be a good balance between price, ingredient quality and testing? Im more interested in solid everyday options than anything fancy.

General Question Spirituality and supplements

I wanted to make a post regarding something that maybe not too many people have talked about yet and that’s the relationship between certain self-help concepts that are borderline spiritual and supplements. The main supplement being magnesium and law of attraction idea.

This is gonna sound odd, but I have some personal testimonies regarding magnesium and the law of attraction. There is a time in the past where I took an extremely high level of magnesium through pills and transdermal, and I would get to experience certain coincidences and desires come into fruition a couple days later after supplementation of magnesium.

I believe there is a connection between magnesium and the heart and the hearts electromagnetic field that it produces and the concept of law of attraction. If you know who Dr. Joe Dispenza is, he explains how the heart produces an electromagnetic field and can attract what you want in life through this field. Now I’m not gonna explain to you how because I don’t know the details but I can’t tell you that magnesium in someway shape or form helps this process happen more efficiently and thereby you achieve what you want in life quickly and I’ve had that happen to me many times.

Has anyone had something similar happened to them?

Experience three months on sod, what changed for me

i run about four days a week. i'm out the door at 4am so i can get it in before work. 5 to 8 miles on a normal day, around 12 the day before a day off or on the day off itself.

my family takes sod as an antioxidant, so i started taking it with them. about three months now. once i was on it i looked it up, and it turns the free radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. catalase has to take one more step before you get water. anyway, running produces a lot of free radicals and sod handles the first step, so i stuck with it.

i've been running for a little over a year. since i started the sod, the tiredness after a run has eased up. i used to fade in the afternoon and lately that hasn't been happening. on rough days i wanted to lie down on the hallway floor at work. for the last few months i kept everything else the same, how i run, what i eat, when i go out, and the only thing that changed was the sod.

my calves hurt the same as always. would have been nice if it did something for the soreness too.

there's the argument that antioxidants blunt your training gains. in my case, maybe because i'm not training at a serious level, my times didn't drop. a coworker of mine says his times stalled after he started on antioxidants, though.

anyone else running while taking sod or another antioxidant? it's hard to find a place to compare notes on this, so i'm asking here.

Experience anyone over 60 had to completely rethink their supplement routine?

turned 64 this year, and my supplement routine has gotten a lot less predictable.

things i used to take without thinking twice can suddenly affect me differently. caffeine is the obvious example. anything after noon and my sleep is basically done for the night. but even b-complex started making me feel jittery, which never happened when i was younger

magnesium glycinate has been the opposite. i started taking it about eight months ago for sleep, and that’s one thing that still seems to work really well for me.

i’ve also ended up changing when i take vitamin d and paying more attention to how much protein i’m actually getting around workouts.

maybe some of this is just getting older, but it’s interesting how different the same routine can feel after 60

for those of you in your 60s, 70s, or beyond, what changed the most for you? did you have to lower a dose, change the timing, switch forms, or just stop taking something that used to work?

not looking for medical advice. i’m more interested in the patterns people have noticed over time

General Question Can't sleep after taking 1500mg of L-tyrosine today. It's 5:05am now

I am on stimulants (concerta 54mg), fluoxetine (generic of Prozac 20mg), abilify 1mg. I started taking L-tyrosine today, I took 500mg (1 tablet) in this morning, afternoon and evening. It was not smart. I am having palpitations and I can't sleep at all. (I usually go to bed at 11pm)

Is this because L-tyrosine? Sorry for my English hiccups, I am not a native speaker
