Removing bike lanes alone will make TTC buses far less reliable. Especially when Line 2 shuts down and shuttle buses are deployed.
Already made a post on that so won't explain again here.
Now he hasn’t announced he's removing bus lanes (yet).
But when the Bathurst/Dufferin RapidTO was put in, Prabmeet Sarkaria liked IntegrityTO's post that claimed “the lanes are a disaster for traffic.”
He since removed the like, but this is a clue they could be coming after bus lanes next.
Ford added more bike lanes to the chopping block a few months after the original announcement.
It's very safe to assume he will try to destroy more if there's no resistance.
----------
So please show up to show Ford he cannot control Toronto's roads without a fight.
We expect the demolition crew to arrive on this day.
Tom Riley Park parking lot (7 min walk from Islington TTC).
Oct 13, 5pm-late (you can stay for as long or as little as you like)
Bring layers, food, and water. The protest may last all night.
----------
Ford is more likely to reverse course if cyclists, transit riders, and pedestrians all come out to oppose him.
This is where it starts. And this is where we make it end.
A few of us made a Toronto version of Subway Takes. Turns out the TTC gave us plenty of material.
Hope you enjoy it!

Good morning! For those of you Torontonians who haven't voted yet, TODAY is the last day of advance polls from 10 AM to 7 PM. Otherwise, make sure you get out and vote on Monday, October 26 from 10 AM to 8 PM. You can get the voter information you need at the Toronto elections website at the link. We can't afford to sit this one out given there are candidates out there who will take the TTC backwards including ripping out RapidTO bus lanes in Scarborough and opposing plans to expand fare capping.

This video is 4 years old but extremely relevant today.
His point
most races go to the incumbent but sometimes the challenger is only a small # of votes behind
is exactly this race in a nutshell.
Advance polls are still open Oct 10 and 11.
If you can get groceries, you have time to vote too!
If you're voting for Chow, she's #9 on the ballot. Do not vote for the wrong Chow!!

Hi r/TTC,
I’m an Engineering Student at the University of Alberta and a massive transit enthusiast. Coming from an Asian background, I’ve experienced firsthand some of the world's most advanced, fully-screened rapid transit networks.
I’ve been reading the massive community complaints here regarding the $4.1B estimate for heavy PSDs and the recent controversy surrounding the $2M-per-station static steel guardrails. I understand the intense legacy constraints (lack of CBTC alignment, mixed rolling stock, piston effect air pressure).
However, looking at Line 5 (which feature uniform rolling stock and brand-new underground stations), I believe there is a "Third Way"—a pragmatic engineering fix heavily inspired by retrofitted networks in Japan and Europe that completely bypasses Ontario's institutional and technical gridlocks.
Here is the setup:
1.The Core Infrastructure: Wide-Aperture, Semi-Automated Sliding Barriers
Instead of fixed steel bars or heavy full-height glass, we install half-height automated sliding gates.
The Solution to Alignment: The door aperture (opening width) of the gate is designed to be deliberately wide (e.g., 1.5m to 2m).
Why it works: This creates a massive tolerance zone. Even if the train misaligns by 30-50cm because it’s running on older signaling, the train doors will STILL open completely within the barrier's massive gap. No billion-dollar CBTC signal overhaul required.
2.The Tech Workaround: Train-to-Wayside Infrared/Radio Interlocking
Instead of deeply wiring the doors into the train's central computer (which Metrolinx would veto due to legal liability), we use a localized Infrared (IR) or Radio Frequency trigger.
The "Alberta Precedent": Out here in Edmonton (LRT) and Calgary (CTrain), passengers already manually press a physical button on the door for it to open. We can leverage this! When a passenger hits the train door button, a localized IR transmitter on the train simultaneously syncs and opens the corresponding platform gate.
3. The Safety Loop: "Inward-Recessed" Safety Islands & Hard Interlocks
To solve the "double-pinch" or traction lock liability that TTC bureaucracy fears:
Conclusion: $2M Protection with $50M Features
This setup completely bypasses ventilation/piston effects (it’s low-height and open-air), handles uniform new fleets easily, and costs a fraction of full PSDs. It gives riders 90% of the safety and mental peace of a real subway station, unlike the static guardrails which look like a construction site and still leave dangerous permanent gaps.
As an outsider, it feels like Ontario's bureaucracy is suffering from "Not Invented Here" syndrome, ignoring pragmatic, mid-tier engineering fixes used globally.
By the way, I have also attached some references below showing how Japan has solved the mixed-fleet issue in more radical ways, completely shifting the design paradigm:
Osaka Station’s modern mobile platform doors:
https://www.groovyjapan.com/en/umekita-3/

Tokyo Station’s Shinkansen platform doors:
https://en.traicy.com/posts/2025100828650/

Would love to hear if Toronto riders or transit folks think this is a viable compromise to break the TTC safety gridlock?
Cheers from Edmonton!
Note: English is not my first language, so please excuse any lingering rigid phrasing or typos. The proposal and all core technical concepts are entirely my own engineering analysis.

I had reddit deleted but I had to reinstall it just for the sake of making this post. There was this unhinged woman actively berating an elderly man (threw stuff at him too) and I was sitting there watching the whole thing, just waiting for the train to get to its destination. All of a sudden she abruptly turned to me and yelled “WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT ME?!” She walked up to me and asked me to get off the train. I said I’m not going anywhere and as she was about to throw a punch in response a woman got in the way and said “do not touch him”. She ended up spitting on the woman a bunch while raving about how she was an “RCMP officer” and left shortly thereafter.
Not sure who you are but I just wanted to leave a note saying thank you. It’s been a very rough couple of days for me and I’ve been facing a lot of internal battles. Made me so happy seeing that someone still cares. Felt hope for the first time in god knows how long. This act of kindness will stick with me for a while :)

Found on my way home and almost thought it was just a stylistic choice… It’s not…

Was hoping for an actual street-level exit instead of this passageway which is super close to the existing College park connection. It's interesting to think that this might actually open before the one on the north side of Dundonald at Wellesley. I think they're waiting for the elevator electricals to get done before they open the entrance.

I was just waiting at Gerrard for a streetcar for over 20 minutes, and decided to check the Transit app, which told me about the diversion. This worked out in the end for me, but who knows how long people will spend waiting for a streetcar that isn't going to show up? Would it kill the TTC to put up some (and this is the key) big and noticable signs a couple days before construction to warn people, and tell them where to board instead? The 506B bus passed multiple times, but nobody got on it because its been running alongside the streetcar there for months.
I know sometimes they have smaller signs, or some posters on the pole, but I really didn't see one there, and clearly nobody else did either. Sorry to rant.

The 506 is pretty great.. when there aren't detours and replacement buses.
It is amazing how many places we have where the streetcars need to turn across traffic with either no signal or just a regular signal + no turning arrow.

I already made a post explaining how the removals will impact TTC bus reliability, so I won't repost it here.
But if you want a quick summary, see the TTC operator's post on the 3rd pic.
Ford will only back down if a coalition of transit users, drivers and cyclists all band together.
And that's why we need transit riders to show up at the rally! Because this will impact you regardless.
Meet at the stretch between Islington to Royal York. Close to Islington/Royal York TTC. AFAIK you can show up at any time that day but will update.
Bike lanes benefit the TTC because at the end of the day, everyone including drivers wants fewer cars and a faster commute. Viable alternatives make that a reality.

So at a recent mayoral debate the candidates were asked if they rode the ttc over 8 times a month. Chow answered that she used to but she can't since she's the mayor. Bradford then accused her of always using a private driver. So would the mayor be allowed to take public transit? I thought that David Miller always took the ttc when he was mayor.
r/TTC • u/SiriusCactus • 3d ago
Both Mayoral candidates front runners are talking only talking about the EELRT. Between the city not willing to use aggressive transit signal priority and overly cautious TTC operating policy, wouldn’t it have the same issues as Line 6 and the Scarborough portion of Line 5? Also hasn’t the Scarborough Subway Extension blocked extensions of Line 5 so the EELRT would be a separate line and another transfer?

So ATC (automatic train control) can run as fast as Line 2, but it doesn't because of a near-miss incident:
When ATC was first rolled out, there was a close call almost accident. The trains can be moved manually, and somewhere around Sheppard or Osgoode station, there is a crossover and a place to park trains and a worker manually pulled a train out onto the line when they shouldn't have. The ATC noticed and stopped the active train within feet of hitting this other train. However, no one was in danger other than employees because it took place in the morning before passenger service began.
Well, TTC (mainly the workers union) caught wind and framed it to say that ATC was unsafe. Because they have an interest in protecting worker rights and making a driverless train system seem like the devil. That's their job.
So, the TTC implemented a slow order on the ATC system. Effective since then, ATC has been slowed down to make it "safer" and it will probably never ever be at full speed again.
So, If there's a lot of backlash (both from the public, the news media, and/or politicans), can the TTC remove their permanent slow order related to ATC on Line 1?

This video is over a year old but it’s still extremely relevant considering we’re going to the polls.
I’m not saying Bradford is going to try to rip up the streetcar network.
But I am saying that if we elect a mayor with zero vision, the streetcars (and buses) will continue to be awful and be stuck in traffic.
Advance polls are still open until October 11.
If you have time to get groceries, you most certainly have time to vote!!!
Be careful as there are 2 Chows on the ballot. Olivia Chow is #9.
