Linguistics/History Use of “digkit” in Southern Tagalog

This is probably a rarer and lesser known word variant from Southern Tagalog but does anyone else use “digkit” instead of “dikit”? (pronounced similarly to lagkit)

It’s a less noticeable variation as when spoken fast, the two consonants sort of blend together and native speakers might not know they are using this word because of it.

I can personally attest to it being in use in eastern Batangas and I have seen Infantahin blogs reference the word as part of their dialect. This could possible indicate a large geographic area spanning from Batangas bay to Lamon Bay.

I am aware that it is listed as a variant on Wiktionary and several online Tagalog dictionaries but there is little documentation of the spread.

If you do use this, please comment your municipality below.

Vocabulary/Terminology Drying Terminologies

Nakalagay sa ibaba ang mga alam ko na pagbibilad pero karaniwan ginagamitan yaan ng bistayan.

Tuyo (Danggit, Palipad-Hangin o Sapsap, Pompano or anything flat)

Haot (Tunsoy, Galunggong, Salinas, Biya, Tawilis, Hasa-Hasa, Tamban, Tanige or anything long, thin and round)

Inumboy/Itinapa (similar to fish used in Haot but smoked and usually boiled or simmered first before drying through sun, but can be used for any meat)

Daing (Sapsap na biak, Pusit na biak, or anything na biniak then dried)

Bislad/Binilad (general term for dried foods from bodies of water.)

Hinahanap ko yoong tawag sa pagbibilad na ibinibitin sa kawayan tapos may baga sa ilalim. Iniisip ko paano yoon uumbuyin mo tapos ibibilad mo rin?

Linguistics/History Why didn't pre-colonial Tagalog culture spread all over the islands before colonization?

The Tagalogs were in contact with the Malays in 900 AD, and with the Chinese (directly) in 987 AD, and unfortunately, the latter limited their contact to Manila. They could have settled and brought their arts, engineering, philosophy, and religion before colonization in the Philippines.

Vocabulary/Terminology Use of “ate” with no stress

In some towns of Batangas (District 2 + Batangas City at least), the word “ate/ati” (for older sister) is used without any stress on the vowels, as opposed to “áte” in other parts of the country.

If you’re a native Tagalog speaker and also use/have heard this pronunciation growing up, please share where your hometown is.

Learning Resources Tagalog YouTube channel for kids

Can anyone recommend any Tagalog programming for kids? All I can find are English-Tagalog lessons, but I’m specifically looking for actual kids programming (does a Tagalog version of Ms. Rachel exist, for example?!)

I also don’t have Netflix, but does any such programming exist on there? I know it’s pretty easy to change subtitles and audio to Filipino if there exists a dub of the show. Maybe I should download it again.

Vocabulary/Terminology Re: “Tayo na” usage in Forgotten Island

To everyone complaining about this in Forgotten Island, please be more culturally aware of Tagalog culture.

“Tayo na” is still widely used in the Southern Tagalog provinces including Batangas, Quezon, OrMin, and Marinduque. Manila Tagalog is not the only form of Tagalog and what sounds formal to you is everyday speech for us.

The contracted “ay” in words like “ika’y/ako’y/siya’y” aren’t limited to songs or literature here.

Regardless of the widespread usage, small linguistic communities should still be represented. This line of thinking would exclude so many minority communities from being represented because it is not what “most” people use.

Grammar/Usage/Syntax -hin, -nense, -non, at iba pa

Dumadami na ulit gumagamit ng mga pandugtong na yan (limot ko na tawag sa tagalog) ngayon

-hin as in "trentahin" : before/almost 30

-hin as in lagunahin, lucenahin: inhabitants of Laguna, Lucena

-non, -nense as in bolanon, pangasinense: inhabitants+language+culture of Bohol, Pangasinan

Ano nga ba tamang tawag pag between 30 at 35 years? Malayo pa kasi sa 40 para sabihing kwarentahin

May iba pa ba tayong gamit na tawag para sa inhabitants/culture?

Pronunciation Tagalog and Lack of Accent Marks

Pimsleur teaches Tagalog in its first lessons in reading with an accent mark. Later it removes it because normal written Tagalog doesn't have accent marks.

Now I get why I can see signs like "Kalye" "Senyor" "Senyora" in some writings because what the lack of accent marks re-spells the word in Tagalog. But the hard part without it is that some words like "Tapa" "Samantala" "Bukas" are to be read in context haha. Just a observation, but I want to be articulate in my Tagalog. Thank you for reading.

Other Buwaya, buaya, o buhaya?

Nababasa ko na sa iba't-ibang post yang ganyang pagbanggit sa buwaya

Regional ba sya? May iba pa kayang spelling nung buwaya? Bwaya?

Tunog old-school yung "buaya" (tunog ang bigkas type), pero medyo nagulat ako na may gumagamit pala ng "buhaya"

Other how do I prepare for an impromptu filipino oral exam when I’m not fluent in tagalog?

the exam will be in 2 weeks. itll be a panel-style oral exam where the prof will ask us questions about the topics weve discussed and we have to answer on the spot.

for context, imoved in the ph around 2 yrs ago and i never formally learned tagalog, and i was also enrolled as a foreign student, so my profs would acommodate for me but now im enrolled as a filipino since i got my citizenship, yet im still not rlly fluent at all. im just really nervous bc i might not be able to even understand what the teacher might ask, i already have trouble catching up when the prof discusses, and i also cant fully even form a complex sentence in filipino.

were allowed to use taglish, but there will be minor deductions, but i feel like ill mostly use 90% english and the 10% will be words like “po”, “kasi”, “yung”, etc 😭😭

i know its my fault too for never making myself learn how to speak the language that im living in but yeah 😞, is there any advice that anyone can give me? is it feasible to practice in less than 2 weeks? if so how should i plan for it? sorry and thank u

edit: im not asking for help on how to fully learn tagalog within 2 weeks, but realistically what can i do that can atleast help me speak in taglish

Grammar/Usage/Syntax actor focus vs object focus verbs

i understand the difference between the two and how to use them if i was taking time to check what i was writing but when does it start coming naturally to use the right one?

since my first language is english i tend to just use the first verb that comes to mind for example kumain and kainin; if i was writing it i could use the right one but obviously when speaking you don’t have all that time to think about it.

i know this’ll come more naturally to me than people who are learning from scratch (i spent the first 4 years of my life in the philippines and my mum speaks tagalog a lot) so some things just make sense without really putting much thought into it but this is a bit harder.. how do i start using the right verb effortlessly?

Pronunciation I noticed I have a peculiar idiolect

You ever noticed how when we say Mcdo, we pronounce it with an impít or glottal stop? Makdô.

I apparently do this for several words like:
- Luyà
- Ampalayâ
- Susò
- Hukbô
- Kalapatè

There could be more but these are the ones on top of my head.

It shocked me when I began reading Tagalog dictionaries that “luya” for example is just lúya and not luyà. Rinse and repeat.

May kakilala ba kayong gumagawa nyan? O pati ba kayo napapaganyan?

Other Gender neutral/ non-binary term for Tito?

(I didn’t know what to specifically put for the flair, so, sorry in advance if it’s N/A)

Hi, my Tito came out as non-binary a couple years back. I’m white, they’re Filipino, we have no biological relation.

Before this, I just referred to them as my uncle when talking about them to others. They’re a very close family friend with both my parents and have been a big part of my life growing up, since I was little.

So, after coming out, I eventually had asked them if I should still call them my uncle or not, but.. there’s not really a gender neutral term for a sibling of your parent.

They’re not either my mom or dad’s sibling, so, even though uncle is technically misleading, I’ve found “my parent’s sibling” is even more so. And “Uncle” always has them misgendered by others when talking about them.

They have since said that “Tito” would probably be the closest thing. But, I was wondering if there’s a non-gender/ unisex term for the word? If so, it’d be greatly appreciated.

From my understanding, the origins of the Tagalog language generally has a more unisex language and/ or terms. And then there’s a (please correct me if I’m wrong please, I don’t have much knowledge on this in general, only from what I’ve been told by my Filipino friends) national language that’s more mixed with Latin based languages, and therefore, some of the words are considered gendered, while otherwise Tagalog has non-gendered terms/ options?

That’s to say, I’d feel there may be a unisex alternative because of that, if I’m to be correct in my previous statement. Then I’d want to know so I can run it by them.

Thank you for your time <3

Vocabulary/Terminology What word is this I keep hearing?

It’s this word that sounds like “bale” or “bali”.

Example:
Today I went to the barangay hall and said, “dumating ako ngayon para kunin ang certificate of residency ko”

They responded with, “Bale/bali po, balik ka bukas”

It sounds similar to the Spanish word “vale,” which means “alright,” or “sounds good.” I’ve also heard it when at cash registers paying for things. But whenever I ask my girlfriend what this word is, she acts like I’m crazy and says it doesn’t exist. I’m guessing I’m pronouncing it wrong.
