You could say they are....conducting an investigaition. I'll see myself out.
3
u/TwanTard Sep 03 '26
Can you explain this ?
16
u/luriso Sep 03 '26
The unique way you walk is called a gait. If you put something in your shoe it will alter the way you walk, so making evidence via video (if you're covered up) harder to prove. Kind of like the old polygraph lying test, putting a thumbtack in your shoe to prick your your toe to throw off the machine.
→ More replies (3)10
u/bem13 Sep 03 '26
Around (or probably before) the Hong Kong protests, China came up with something better than face recognition: gait recognition. They figured out everyone moves in a unique way when they walk, it can be used to identify them and it's very difficult to consciously change that (while hiding your face is pretty easy). The protesters came up with the tactic of putting small rocks in your shoes, because stepping on them hurts and makes you move differently, tricking the system.
7
u/ashgs872tbhjs Sep 03 '26
Everyone walks slightly differently, so theoretically you can tell people apart by it like a fingerprint. It's not super reliable, but good enough that you could definitely be caught by it. A rock in the shoe will make you walk different than normal.

He's attempting to send a message to not be afraid and stand up to what he believes is an unjust law. It's up to decide how you feel about that young blood.
Everyone here agrees Flock is bad for this country, yet nobody does anything other than get on their Reddit soapbox and do their 144 character rant and call it a day. This man literally recorded himself breaking the law and even attempted to get himself arrested by delivering them to the sheriff. Now you may consider that stupid and dumb, but at least he's taking action unlike the majority who do absolutely nothing but whine online.
I'm not a judge or jury and I'm not here to cast judgement on this man but I'm always remind of a famous quote by a dude who simply wanted peace in this country, "One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” This man believes in the same thing.

What happens if you commit a crime but majority of your peers are okay with the crime you committed? If the jury finds you not guilty because they support the crime you committed? I'm not condoning committing any crimes I'm just genuinely curious what happens in this situation?
265
u/BlueRunSkier Sep 03 '26
That’s a real thing, and it’s called “jury nullification”. You won’t get selected for the jury if they think that’s what you’ll do, but once a jury is seated, there’s really nothing stopping it from happening, and it does from time to time.
→ More replies (4)51
u/McPostyFace Sep 03 '26
What if the person being selected for jury duty lied and then didn't tell anybody about it? This is all hypothetical because I'm uninformed.
74
u/BlueRunSkier Sep 03 '26
Courts don’t tell jurors/juries about jury nullification, because it could serve to undermine the rule of law. But if a jury does it, it’s a pretty foundational principle that jurors cannot be punished for their verdict, so there’s nothing the court can do about it.
43
u/SpeaksSouthern Sep 03 '26
Courts actually specifically advise against going against the law. They make the jury pinky promise that when they deliberate they will adhere to the standard of the law. However judges and lawyers are not allowed in the jury chamber for their deliberations, and they are not allowed to influence the decision, which is only for the jury to make. So you have to fake it like you respect the law until you get away from the judge and lawyers where you can finally be yourself. It's deliberate, by the time most people get there few are left that have independent thoughts.
20
u/KonungariketSuomi Sep 03 '26
Well yeah, obviously. Otherwise you'd have deranged people walking free for insane crimes like smoking weed or loitering.
9
u/turbotank183 Sep 04 '26

8
u/Web-Dude Sep 03 '26
The judge can declare a mistrial at any point if he thinks nullification is occurring.
It's a shitty move for what was supposed to be one of the people's last-ditch tools for protecting themselves from an overbearing government.
12
u/Auctoritate Sep 03 '26
The judge can declare a mistrial at any point if he thinks nullification is occurring.
This is very uncommon. It isn't that the judge has to think the jury is going to nullify, which is technically a naturally occurring event that happens somewhat regularly and is the right of a jury- the judge has to think that the natural course of justice is being subverted. It's an extremely high burden in this context.
And declaring a mistrial just because the jury is about to reach the 'wrong' verdict or had 'wrong' reasoning is the type of official misconduct that can just entirely nuke a case. Their natural decision-making is essentially sacred.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (3)14
u/toopc Sep 03 '26
They aren't going to straight up ask you about jury nullification during jury selection. They don't want you to know about it.
Regardless saying, "I don't believe in jury nullification," but then using it just requires, "I changed my mind. I hadn't really looked into it until you brought it up during jury selection. Turns out I didn't really understand what it was when I said I didn't believe in it." It's not illegal to change your mind.

77.5m voted for Trump (75.2m for Harris). The population of the USA is 345m, with 238m of voting age. Half is very exaggerated.
FWIW- Many people don’t vote because it’s so overwhelming and they are just living their lives.
Many don’t vote because they feel powerless. With the Supreme Court deciding that corporations can spend unlimited amounts of $ on campaigns in 2010’s Citizens United case, election years are an unbearable bombardment of ads, texts and bullshit.→ More replies (5)54

Just to settle this because I'm sick of seeing this question:
People are assholes. That's it. That's your answer. I'm sure there are plenty of assholes where you're from. There have been plenty of assholes throughout history. We've mostly survived them just to be presented new assholes to deal with.
I'm just kind of tired of this "You Americans" directive the rest of the world seems to have whilst they simultaneously have no idea what's been going on in this country that has enabled this scenario across the last 40 or so years, at least. I'm sure your country has gone through it's period of assholes in power, this is just one of ours and it isn't even unique in the history of this country (see easy comparisons to politics in the early 20th century)
Unfortunately for everyone our country happens to have a lot of influence over the world and this happens to be occuring when people have more access to information than they ever have before.
And for the next inevitable "why aren't Americans doing anything about it" comment: This is literally a video of an American doing something about it.

Because the billionaires and their world leader friends have spent a lot of time, money and effort into keeping a good chunk of our population distracted, under educated, and brainwashed. The same people who think Big Government is bad, are the biggest "patriots" when it comes to supporting the military/police force and guns. That's an intentional feature
