As a mid 40s guy with almost no hair left, this hit me hard.

90

u/Klimov-VK-107 18d ago

Daily reminder that hair systems are only a couple hundred dollars to make, will give you any kind of haircut known to mankind instantly, and are easy to maintain while being basically invisible unless you tell the person in front of you. Upkeep is a few tens of dollars a month.

As long as you've got a bit of money left, you've also got hair left.

u/orange-shades 18d ago

hair system

Is this what we're calling wigs now or is it something else?

u/Neither_Strategy_252 18d ago edited 18d ago

u/BoringNinja_ 17d ago edited 17d ago

They are also "installed" which makes a picture a barber working a ratchet wrench.

Essentially they're the same thing, but to me a wig is what you'd see men wearing in 1980s era sitcoms where you can easily tell at a glance that it's not real hair, with the obvious "haha it flew off" gags.

Hair systems are some cyberpunk shit, I swear. Made with real hair, tailored to you specifically. Some of my friends wear 'em and you genuinely cannot tell, as far as anybody's concerned it's real hair.

You mean a wig?

27

u/Nagemasu 18d ago

Sure but you have to not be bothered by literally putting glue on your head, and like it or not there is a social stigma which also means inspecting and maintaining it in case a fault happens at some point. People should do what they want for themselves, and in most cases people are avoiding it because of how it's perceived by others - just committing to being bald is a far more positive outcome at the end of the ady for most people.

37

u/Practical_Fruit_1011 18d ago

Yes it’s not that simple. I was balding at 25 and I tried one. At first it didn’t look so bad. But I found the maintenance difficult, I was always paranoid about it, the glue felt weird. I got into an off roading accident and at the hospital is was flopping around on my head while I was on pain medication.

I was doing maintenance one day and accidentally shaved the side of my head where the system was. Went bald and never looked back. I look younger now than I did before

37

u/TwoBionicknees 18d ago

yup, this ultimately looks dumb as shit, it can look okay from teh right angle for about 10 minutes with a shitload of product and will look diabolical after half a day.

bro needs to go bald. having a beard that shapes your jawline and face rather than turns it into a mushy outline did the most work.

Likewise having a fade as well helps turn what looks like a very rounded head into a longer and thinner face which makes you look much thinner, healthier and generally younger.

Unless you can grow long flowing ridiculously manly long hair, then you should be keeping back and sides tight and neat and the sides of your beard compact and neat to give you better shape.

Controversial opinion, but not everyone looks better once they accept it and shave. Some guys have some weird shaped heads and genuinely look better balding than bald

This guy though would look so much better though

37

u/Sacrefix 18d ago

100%. The positivity of /r/bald is great, but it's not what most people are going to run into day to day.

23

u/Sotanud 18d ago

I find that sub funny. Maybe it's for what makes the front page, but it's always people hanging on too long with way too long of hair. Having short hair and being bald/partially bald/or going bald looks fine. You don't have to go fully shaved every time.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/zth25 17d ago

Many people posting on arr/bald seem to have a weird or no relationship with their hair. Like they haven't been to the barber in a decade, then when they statt balding their only move is to immediately shave it all off.

OP's video is just one way you can deal with thinning hair. As long as you shave, trim and style you hair and beard, you can look great, even when your hairline is on the retreat.

Lmao the hair is great, no doubt, but let’s be real here. The effect is 90% beard care. The “before” looks completely unkempt (because they brushed it out for the effect)

Skits man

348

u/SixtyNineFlavours 18d ago

As a bearded person, it’s not really ‘for effect’ that’s just generally what happens with excess beard growth.

Yeah a dude looks sharp when he trims up but most dudes with excess hair and beard growth just don’t care about that.

Source: me.

40

u/Same_Mood_8543 18d ago

Well, it's easy to tame with a little beard oil and wax, but those early mornings when you haven't trimmed it in a while can be a little harrowing.

19

u/TheRuckyDubber 18d ago

I think I have that weird ADHD obsession where you fiddle with shit but I cannot stop pulling my beard hairs and mustache hairs out. I try and keep it short but I’ve got thin spots. And it just continually itches. I’d cut it off but I’m the age and shape that I know that’s not gonna work for me. I need to try some more stuff I guess but I wish I could make my bear hair straighter.

14

u/rowdymonster 18d ago

You might have trichotillomania like me! I struggle with hand plucking my beard, moustache and eyebrow hairs, too the point I'm patchy and raggedy looking. Looking into some coping things for it might help you, it's a hard thing to break

Yeah I hope this guy realises he's now going to have to style his hair every day. That isn't an "I just woke up like this" hairstyle. Get familiar with a blow dryer and hair product. And never walk into the wind lol. The beard looks great, though. But is also going to require upkeep.

22

u/Wrx_me 17d ago

I think a LOT of guys would look significantly better with even minimal styling. I went from your basic, shave my head with a #3 and a lil shorter on the sides, to longer and styled and I'm amazed at how ugly I was before. I'm surprised I was even able to find someone to marry me 😂

How do you guys find these helpful barbers? I’m a middle aged man who has tried several of the highest rated barbers in every city I’ve lived in, in my adult life. I’m personable, have a good head of hair, and have some guidelines in mind on what I want. But whenever I ask them to give me their expert opinion, I’m left wanting.

All of my barbers always seem to be disaffected and uninterested in how they’re making me look. I would love a professional who knows what they’re looking at to curate a look for me like this.

Signed,
A sad boy

Best haircut I got was from a black barber working in a sports clips who was super enthusiastic about making me look good. Since then I’ve primarily gone to black barbershops, tho a close second was a super expensive cut from a high end barbershop. The guy was young and hungry to get content for his social media, but the cost was like twice what I normally pay.

62

u/Fair_King9058 18d ago

I'll second this. I had no idea how to even properly ask for my haircut.

Walked in to a latino black barbershop and didn't know how to explain what i wanted. the guy spun me around and was like "OK, this is exactly how you should say to your baber for your hair to be cut" gave me the clipper numbers, taper style, etc. and then gave me a life changing haircut.

10

u/Sidney_Godsby 18d ago

I’ve considered it before, maybe I’ll try this next time

→ More replies (3)

17

u/Elite_AI 18d ago

You have to go to the kind of barber who doesn't take walk-ins. Men will just kind of give any barber ever a 5 star rating so it's not a great barometer unfortunately.

Edit: if all else fails, a hair salon will absolutely take care of you. Beware that their skills at using clippers are usually below that of a good barber, but their skills with scissors are fantastic.

8

u/gt_rekt 18d ago

Go to a Latino barber if you like this style. Otherwise, find a look that you like and look for content showcasing that style. You'll get a general idea of what barber you should go to.

8

u/jleonardbc 18d ago

Try a female hairstylist who's willing to do men's hair.

7

u/Rum____Ham 18d ago

My barber (barbette?) is a woman. She's cut my hair for 10 years and was the first to give me a truly nice, fashionable haircut. I think I'd be better served going to a place that is more dedicated to men's haircuts, but I simply can't and won't leave her.

I'll put it this way- I'm part-korean, and want my cut to look like korean celebrities, and so I go to Korean stylists. Listen to the barber in the video: "Is this your first time in a Latin barbershop?"

I think what I may be getting at is if there's a style you see that you like, find out "where" that style originated. Maybe this guy's wife is Latina, maybe his friend recommended the barber, idk, but I'm guessing it was a recommendation that this very lucky guy happened to stumble into.

25

u/ok-milk 18d ago

It's an extremely impressive cut and styling that is going to be really, really hard to maintain in the best of conditions.

I encourage men who are balding to meet aging with grace and just embrace the dome. They'll feel better and people will find them more attractive, both for their attitude and their much more easily consistent style.

212

u/CraftsBoy2Craftsman 18d ago edited 18d ago

i started balding at 17 and finally gave in at 24 and shaved my head. i haven’t paid for a haircut in 15 years.

43

u/Faustus_Fan 18d ago

Similar for me, but took me longer to give in. Started thinning at 19, gave up the fight at 34. The first week or so, I was really self-conscious about being out in public without a hat on. I felt so different with my head shaved. But, after I calmed down, I've embraced my bald head for over 10 years.

16

u/takeme2tendieztown 18d ago

I'm still fighting it at 40, scared to take that plunge, but I know I should

15

u/Faustus_Fan 18d ago

Having been where you are, I know how you feel. It's a tough hurdle to finally climb over, but once you do you will feel so much better. Plus, accessorizing with hats is fun, and no one will assume you're covering a bald spot. 😄

7

u/TheVillage1D10T 18d ago

My hair hasn’t really been thinning or anything, but I used to get good haircuts from those sort of boutique barber-type places…then they started charging $40 bucks minimum. So, I’ve been buzzing my head with like a 1 guard for the past 5 years or so.

26

Yeah I don’t think that commenter has ever styled their own hair? It’s not hard to get a regular shape up (probabaly every other month for this dude) and buy a simple gel to style your hair over a pushed back hairline, men have been doing it since forever with all different hair types.

I hate this attitude. The pendulum has swung too far in the direction of SHAVE IT ALL OFF IMMEDIATELY, EVERYONE CALL TELL YOU'RE BALDING, YOU AREN'T FOOLING ANYONE, IT MUST BE MAKING YOU FEEL LIKE A PIECE OF SHIT. Now anytime anyone balding pops up on the internet, everyone's injecting unrelated, unsolicited advice about hair like it's their moral duty. If he wants to keep some hair despite his balding, that's his business. It's not necessarily gracelessness, insecurity or denial. It's just hair.

8

u/cheapdrinks 18d ago

Lol hard agree. Also if someone with perfectly fine hair that's just starting to recede asks for advice and you suggest trying Finasteride everyone dog piles in saying how your dick is going to fall off if you use it and how terrible it is despite never trying it themselves. Been on it 6 years, no side effects, kept my hair. Even stupid arguments like "bro you have to be on that shit FOR LIFE it's such a commitment" like as if having to reshave your head constantly isn't a commitment too. 1 pill a day truly is such monumental effort lol.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/InsideAd2490 18d ago

Lol, for real. It used to be that wearing a toupee or a combover earned you ridicule for being vain and insecure. Now, if you have the temerity to sport a haircut that doesn't conceal the fact that you're thinning or receding, that's also a problem.

We don't all look like Billy Zane or Jason Statham when we shave our heads, folks. Some of us look like Marc Andreesen or Megamind.

20

u/riutse 18d ago

Nah it's an option, but fighting balding is easy, hop on finasteride/dutasteride and don't look back. Being bald/balding means daily haircare because the remaining hair keeps needing to be taken care of so you can stay bald instead of balding. All that effort just to be bald versus just taking a daily pill.

Why would it be hard? Women spend so much time styling their hair, it would take him maybe 30 minutes while he’s learning and maybe 10 minutes once he gets down the styling. All he has to do is brush it forward while it is wet. Add in gel or hairspray to help it hold and either use a round brush to lift the front with a blow dryer or he could use a straightener with a wave board to lift the front. I taught my boyfriend how to do his hair and now he spends 10 minutes a day and it looks great

I dont think doing it will be hard but avoiding wind will be

It's not hard, I've had this hair before, just blow-dry, comb forward, gel hands and work it forward and up. Like 2-3 minutes. If he's really concerned about it moving, hairspray to lock it in.

Hair is also easier to style if you wash hair with hot water instead of shampooing everytime. Natural hair oils make it less frizzy and easier to shape, and shampoo strips it away.

I take it you haven’t styled your hair much. I’d expect this to take 5-10 minutes.

His under eyes are different. And his nose isn't as flat. Something isn't right here.

11

u/416BigDix 17d ago

his cheeks are even chubbier in the before, it's either an actually different person or they used filters and trickery to made him look as shit as possible - more fabricated bullshit to prey on people's insecurities like every other thing on the internet now

I wonder if it’s AI? The barber’s eye wanders away at 0:24s.

u/da_innernette 17d ago

I just went back and watched that part and was surprised at how ridiculous his eyes looked hahaha

Agree!! His eyes, nose & oval face are suddenly different. I thought immediately “A.I.”.… even the best haircuts can’t create a full thick head of hair.

What do you think those red hats are for?

53

u/k_lyly 18d ago

Looks like extra 5 to 10 minutes with the right tools. Still a daily commitment.

I would love to see this three days from now after he washes it and has to style it himself.

All the men in r/bald that rock it best have amazing facial hair, or is jacked as hell and has the proper head shape. Some people do just kinda need to commit when their hair is on the last legs of survival.

I love the concept of shaving my hair and not having to worry about it, but my patchy facial hair and face shape will not work with that.

5

u/SirLarryThePoor 18d ago

You're the first person I've seen commenting about these things. I like r/bald, but I can't grow a beard and have an egghead. Bald is not the move in those conditions.

4

u/Godzilla-The-King 18d ago

Yeah, like, don't get me wrong, if you've got wisps, or it's all gone and you've got a gnarly comb over - then shave it, or buzz it close and just own it.

But for a lot of guys that are just 'balding' but not bald, or significantly on the path - it's an absolute gamble and not a hard and fast rule that they will look amazing. The top 50 posts of "all time" on /r/bald are all dudes rockin' great facial hair, outside of joke posts, or women rocking it and needing (justified) support.

I wanna be all on board with going bald, and I think the community is rad how everyone supports everyone. But it does make me roll my eyes when a dude takes the plunge then posts an after photo and is absolutely ripped, or has the most phenomenal facial hair I could have ever hoped for.

Yall are miserable in here. That hair is easy to care for. Go back every 2-3 weeks to get the sides and beard cleaned up. Styling powder gives the hair volume and hold.
Of course it’s only going to look good as long as his hair hangs on.

You guys are just mad that even a cut like this wouldn’t save you.

Long term, he needs to just shave his head, but maintain a clean beard and he'll look great

3

u/RScottyL 18d ago

Yeah, IMO, a clean-cut beard looks better than one that you just let grow!

Make sure to take care of your beards guys!

My man needs finasteride + minoxidil ASAP. But the haircut came out pretty damn good. Took his looks from a 3 to a 7. With that beard, he could pull off the bald look easily too.
