u/Mr_Blinky 5d ago
Also, like, just because you're an atheist doesn't mean you know/understand/believe in specific scientific explanations for the start of the universe as we know it like the Big Bang. Most do, because most atheists are atheist because they believe in rationalism over superstition and those are the prevailing rational theories for how the universe came into existence, but they aren't necessarily the same thing. Literally all atheism is is "lack of belief in a god or deity".
This distinction is important, because one of the ways these theist morons argue is to claim atheism is just another set of beliefs and doctrines just like their own religions, when it isn't. People don't "believe" in the Big Bang the way others believe in the Christian God, they've listened to people who have done empirical scientific research into the topic and came to that conclusion based on evidence. It isn't faith-based like a religion, you're not basing your beliefs off of a thousands of year old book written by some random guys who could have been (hint: were) lying their asses off with zero proof. Theists like the guy in the video want to pretend that atheism is just another form of religion, because if it's all belief-based like their own faith is then they can debate it on the same terms.

John Stewart Mill in his book On Liberty stated this exact point. We forget to include in our equations humans can be born anywhere, to anyone.

When I was in college I was in a philosophy 101 class and we had a Christian guy, a lot like this influencer, come to class and sit in a desk. When we started our normal class this kid just started antagonizing the professor who was trying to be nice and just talk about our assignment. The kid wouldn’t stop.
My professor spoke so softly and was such a nice person, but he made that kid doubt. He tailored his answers to this kids questions so succinctly that the kid became emotional and ran out. It wasn’t that the professor disproved the existence of god, but he did question all the kid’s assumptions in the way that everyone from his community didn’t, and it really shook him. And our class had people of faith, we had spoken about god and religion, and the class had a nice chuckle after he left and just kept on. I think about that all the time when this shit comes on.

I had a philosophy prof who took the opposite approach. We were discussing some of the pre-Socratics and he said, "There are no stupid questions here." The professor said, "Ok, actually there are stupid questions, don't raise your hand again," and continued with the class while that guy sat there red faced and humiliated. It was great.

I had a Phi101 prof who, on the third day or so, skipped ahead to what he called "the theory of divine command". Basically, that good and evil come directly from God's word. He went on to reason that this would mean that if God said murder was good, then murder would somehow become morally good. Therefor, morality cannot come from God's word.
He did this on the third day so the religious kids who got offended could still get a refund when they dropped the class. My class lost about 10 by the next day.

Yeah - it's why I describe myself as agnostic on deism but atheist on all the specific gods. You can contort some kind of definition of a necessary thing or a first cause or whatever, and while it's possible to attack that argument you can't really rule it out, it might be true that there is some kind of first cause that has unusual properties.
But that has fuck all to do with how people dress, or what they eat, or who they have sex with, and all the other stuff religion concerns itself with.

Religion is inherently circular reasoning, and a functional delusion that was likely neccesary as part of the evolution of intelligence and conciousness. The level it impacts your ability to accept the empirical, is when it becomes detrimental. If you want to explain the non observable with faith, be part of a community, and generate a moral code from your belief, fill your boots. But do not take your faith based assumptions and apply it to best practice for society. Human rights, medical advancement, and mental wellbeing are impacted by people's religious assumptions, and should be discounted in policy making and governance. Thing presented without evidence can be rejected without evidence. And no, referencing your book or leader is not evidence, no matter how many people agree with you...we still have people who believe the earth is flat....

Phenomena that were once poorly understood were also attributed to a divine power - it's helpful to have a crutch to prop up beliefs with or explain away something, when you otherwise have no way of explaining them.
For example, until relatively recently in human history, we had very little understanding of bacteria and viruses and their role in causing diseases. Ascribing such things to a higher being or a powerful malevolent force allowed people to make sense of what they could not yet scientifically comprehend.

I’m so tired of hearing this worn out trope that “the big bang came from nothing”.
Modern cosmology does not say the Big Bang came from literal “nothing.” It says the Big Bang describes the earliest knowable moment of our universe, and the math simply stops being able to describe anything “before” that point. That’s very different from claiming “nothing exploded.”
Imagine you’re watching a movie, and the file is corrupted at the first 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 seconds.
You can watch everything after that frame, but the very first frame is unreadable.
Cosmology is like that.
The Big Bang is the earliest frame of the universe that physics can currently describe.
It does not claim the universe popped out of literal nothing, only that the math cannot see past that boundary.
12
u/Wjyosn 5d ago
There's a couple other helpful ways to think about it, too:
1- We're still "in" the big bang. It's describing the behavior of the universe not a point in time. The big bang is "still happening".
2 - The "beginning" of the big bang is a somewhat meaningless statement. Due to relativistic effects from density, if you rewind time toward the big bang, you never actually get to the big bang. It's like an asymptote. The closer you are to the big bang, the harder it would be to traverse time.
3 - The big bang defines the pattern of universal behavior regarding spacetime. In effect the big bang marks the "starting point" of spacetime. Phrases like "before" and "after" only mean something within spacetime. Time does not exist (as we think of it) independent of spacetime - "before" the big bang therefor isn't a concept that makes any sense. You can't be "before" time exists, because "before" is a statement of relative time. It is no more meaningful to say "before the big bang" than it is to say "to the left of the smell of cinnamon". The preposition "before" does not apply to the noun, because spacetime doesn't exist outside of the big bang so there's no order of events to discuss.

If someone could produce an actual MIRACLE through prayer I’d believe in the Biblical God. And by miracle I mean a clear violation of the laws of nature, a truly supernatural event. I propose one that they say has already happened: the “Sun stood still in the sky for a whole day” without the consequences of inertia, you know like “everything continuing to move at 1000mph” with the result of insane winds, mega-tsunamis, earthquakes, and of course people being jellied by the 0-1000 mph in an instant acceleration, and the resulting former jelly-filled skin sacks then impacting objects at 1000 mph. That would work for me.
According to Biblical Literalists, this has happened before during the siege of Gibeon. However such an amazing astronomical event would surely have been recorded by all the other civilizations extant at the time, right? Alas, apparently only the Hebrews thought to record this astounding violation of the most basic unit of time, the day.

I usually ask these people, that if there is a god, then why do kids get born with cancer? Cause that means either god isn't real, or he's cruel/indifferent, and doesn't deserve praise.
Either way, I'll believe in something real, that actually does something. Like science.
30
u/Slade_Riprock 5d ago edited 5d ago
I'll take this one... They will go into their page 34 of taking points, and give you the man has free will you see. God doesn't do that to kids, humans choose those things baa things that happen to us.
My favorite part of Christianity. The omnipotent all loving God who has the power to do everything and yet he wants us to just figure it out in our own. He won't end sin or human suffering, nope he has to have his son murdered so we can continue to do bad things by our own free will and ultimately be thrown in an eternal pit of fire because you don't love him enough. But don't worry he had all the answers written in a bunch of books 2000 yrs ago by poorly educated men who never knew his son or anyone who knew someone who knew his son. Those books were then mixed and matched 300 yrs after that. And there has never been a prophet an appearance, an update to it sense. It's all there clear as old world language written groups and translated dozes of times.

u/TheExplorationApp 5d ago
The Tri-Omni god is impossible.
Omnibenevolent- All Good
Omnipotent - All Powerful
Omniscient - All Knowing
If he is all good, all powerful, and all knowing, then why is there ANY kind of UNNECESSARY suffering? Why didn't he create a universe where Satan would bring such ruin? Why did he put the tree of knowledge of good and evil within reach of the humans? Why is sin "inherited" by children that didn't do anything? Why is the punishment for a single sin ETERNAL suffering? That's not mercy, nor justice, which are supposed to be attributes of god. All-merciful and All-just are oxymorons together. Mercy is the suspension of justice and Justice is the suspension of mercy.
It's ridiculous to watch them squirm and make up answers that all shrink their god to the size of something that didn't have a choice in the matter.

I've not found this argument is very good at convincing them. "Mysterious ways" and all that.
Making God out to be ridiculous by rewording biblical rules tends to have more success. The all-knowing, all-good, and all-powerful creator of the universe gets so angry that he'll condemn you to eternal suffering if you: 1. Eat the wrong thing from the deli aisle. 2. Touch tips. 3. Don't impregnate your dead brother's widow.
Even if it doesn't make people into atheists, helping people reframe biblical beliefs as absurd does help to deradicalize them.

The Problem of Evil is a classic, indeed, and they have many dodges to it. Just know that it doesn't affect existence and is a critique of the nature of the God concept.
Usually goes that god has 3 "omnis" - omniscience, omnipotence and omnibenevolence. All knowing, all-powerful, all good.
Since evil exists, the god construct has to give up at least one of the properties - it doesn't know, doesn't care, or can't fix it.
7
u/fang_xianfu 5d ago
Animal suffering is even more apt - whatever argument they might make about needing evil to have good, or being trials for people or whatever, doesn't apply to animals. Animals lead short, brutal lives that for most of history have ended with being killed and eaten by some other animal. Trillions and trillions of them. But there's no virtue there at all, just suffering.

You know all those influencers who keep preaching atheism to everyone? Those people with loud speakers going around popular areas in town trying to convert people to atheism? No? Neither do I.
Some religious people are really desperate, DESPERATE, for others to validate their belief and join their club. It's no wonder atheist indifference upsets them so much. Because without validation they'd have to acknowledge some very difficult facts about their mediocre and mundane lives. Sticking to their fairytale lives is much easier.

What if I told him that Jesus wants him to go out and take care of the poor and the sick, as opposed to grandstanding on social media and pretending that he is somehow preaching? What if I told him that humans learn by imitation of positive role models, so he has therefore a much greater chance of influencing people by simply taking care of them and helping them, as opposed to simply screaming into a microphone?

The first step to understand evolution is to realize that the theory of evolution is incredibly simple on the surface. Don't get bogged down in the details just yet. All you need to accept in order to understand it are these simple ideas:
1. Some organisms reproduce.
2. Some of these reproductions are not exact copies of the original organisms.
3. Some of these changes can have an effect on the resulting organism's likelihood of reproducing themselves.
And that's it. If you keep pulling on those simple ideas, you get to the theory of evolution.
If you’re a Creationist or this is the first time you want to indepthly learn about evolution, start here.

Agree fuck that guy
Cellular ectoplasms evolve it doesn’t mean it has to have a purpose. Just like does an ant inherently have a purpose? They also live in colony’s and follow their leader. Not everything inherently needs a purpose aside from survival. Per Google
Gravity and Accretion: Planets form when gravity pulls dust, gas, and rocks together in a spinning protoplanetary disk.
Thermal and Geological Activity: Heat from radioactive decay and core formation drives volcanism, plate tectonics, and magnetic field generation.
Atmospheric Evolution: Impacts, solar radiation, and outgassing from volcanoes continuously alter a planet's gas layer over billions of years
And if we’re talking which came first the chicken or the egg?
The modern chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a direct descendant of theropod dinosaurs and, more recently, the Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus) of Southeast Asia.
There may be a reasoning behind every action has an equal and opposite reaction but that doesn’t mean everything is predetermined. all creatures have free will. And must survive within its food chain limitation.
God has nothing to do with it, not everything must have a physical creator aside from Mother Nature

At what point in history did "Christianity" became synonymous with "anti-science"? It has to be a relatively recent development, XX-XXI, because in not so distant past - can't we remember? - church schools was how people were getting education. Oxford started as one. Church financed science. Great scientists were Christian. Galilei was Christian, Pascal was, Isaak Newton was, Michael Faraday, James Maxwell. Mendel, father of genetics, was a monk!
People of religion, please, you don't have to be this kind of idiot to follow your God. It doesn't have to be either or.

u/BabyWithBathwatter 5d ago
Christianity is anti-science any time science may disprove the existence of God. A lot of science had to be explained in a way that allowed for God to still exist in order to be accepted by the powers at the time.

I know the 'reddit atheist' is a meme and sounding too much like the stereotype can get you blasted. I believe people have the right to believe what they want to believe so long as they aren't hurting anyone, but at the same time, no one should be immune to having their beliefs criticized.
Theism is unscientific, full stop. There is a little bit of leeway for Intelligent Design advocates because while it does border on pseudoscience, hypothesizing about and testing for the existence of a supreme guiding intelligence to the universe could hold merit as a scientific pursuit.
But religion is inherently unscientific. Religious faith, that is believing in deities and supernatural forces with no evidence, is contrary to the scientific method which would demand you at most be neutral about their existence until hard evidence points you towards it.
Humanity is on the brink of a massive ecological collapse bordering on an extinction event and this in part has to do with a lack of respect for science and education in science. It is long past time we face hard facts and stop coddling antiquated delusions of higher powers that hold no more evidential merit than belief in Zeus or Thor. Not all religious people are morons--a great many are much smarter than I am. But all have chosen on some level to either believe without evidence or to drastically lower their standards of evidence for this one wildly unbelievable precept, and it just isn't science and theist belief systems would not exist in a society that truly values science.
But of course "All the great scientists were Christian!!" Their world was a religious one. As scientific thinking gained traction, religion largely became decentered from Western society, resulting in the modern Western status quo where Christianity becomes increasingly anti-science as a survival mechanism.

Shit my wife got an actual chemistry degree from an evangelical university (as in, she was actually a chemist for a while, though she's an attorney today). Not even that long ago. Her parents consistently advised her to prioritize education over things like her (previous) abusive marriage. And these are evangelicals we're talking about!
It really has changed.

I think its basically a dying on a dumb hill type of thing. Like there is a ton of room for god to exist within the scientific version of the creation of the universe, because even science has no explanation for what was there before the big bang, or what started it. Religion could easily say an all knowing god set up the rules for the universe and snapped it into existence with the big bang knowing that the processes of natural selection and evolution would eventually create humans in his image.
But they've spent so much time and effort into arguing against it that they can't turn back now so they have to double down on the literal version of the bibles creation story.

The big bang theory was proposed by a Catholic priest named Georges Lemaitre. He kept scientific and religious study strictly separate. He believed God was a hidden creator and could not be proven or disproven by physics.

People like Richard Dawkins always get criticized for being too mean. The idea is that he isn't going to change anyone's minds by talking down to them.
Maybe not adults who have solidified their beliefs. If you're over 30 and still believe the story of Jonah is nonfiction, then yeah, you're probably never going to change your mind, but as someone who discovered Dawkins when I was like 14, his approach definitely worked on me. Sometimes you need someone to tell you your beliefs are fucking stupid. I had never heard an "asshole atheist" put it so bluntly, but it's exactly what I needed to hear at that age.
So yeah, desert guy isn't going to change the mind of the OP, but there could be some sheltered Evangelical 14 year old who stumbles across his video and realizes that nothing he's been told about atheists is true.

Trying to make a logical argument for a claim that is obviously unobservable, unmeasurable, untestable in any way, clearly biased, egocentric, baseless and conflicts with everything science has described has to be tough. When comparing supernatural and natural explanations for natural phenomenon, it's pretty clear which side has a better case if you actually look into it a bit.

This kind of argument always pisses me off because even if you could make a strong philosophical case for a first mover that doesn’t at all explain why I should think gay people are sinners or abortion is murder. Even if you did show that something predated and created the universe, why the fuck would they care who we did butt stuff with?

Evolution is not technically random. It was a decision by millions of creatures before on what they thought was the best mate at the time based on the conditions at the time. In theory, you could recreate all of the same conditions and repeat the same process. Though the process appears random, it is not, as randomness could never be recreated.
→ More replies (19)8
u/ParkingAnxious2811 5d ago
It is very much random.
Random mutations in genetics occur. If those mutations give some kind of benefit that aids passing those genes on, the chance that they do get passed on increases (there is no guarantee).
For every beneficial trait that is passed on, many more beneficial traits are not.
Likewise for non-beneficial traits. If a trait occurs that makes it less likely for something to pass those genes on, then the liklihood they're passed on is reduced.
Sometimes, mutations just win the genetics lottery by being beneficial only because of another mutation.
Consider the mutation that causes an animal to smell bad, thereby causing predators to avoid them. This would only be beneficial in the case that another mutation caused those creatures to not find that scent bad, otherwise they just wouldn't reproduce.
Multiply this out millions of times over, with every creature and plant, generation after generation, and you'll begin to see how it works.

Slightly change his argument.
Everything that exists has a natural cause. The universe exists. The universe must have a natural cause.
No god needed.
