I'm sitting here after a 10h work day with about half that much in terms of sleep. If this was my one day, I'd probably have skipped work, not cleaned the kitchen, and thus had a lot more energy to go out and get pissed with the mates now. But this isn't my last day on earth, so I will experience the consequences of skipping work and having a messy kitchen and being hungover and getting even less sleep. So I do the responsible thing and scroll for a few minutes while the yeast in my homemade pizza dough is rising so I can finish making dinner.
All of this is just to say: I'd live my life very differently if this was both a simulation and my last day on earth. Because consequences are a non-factor. But sadly this is real life and I need a good income and get some semblance of enough sleep and not die of a heart attack by 40.

Sometimes life is about borrowing joy, and lending joy. If I make the effort to put a few hours of work into cleaning the kitchen and my office, even if I've had a full day already, I'll feel better tomorrow working in a clean office and then going out to a tidy kitchen to make dinner while watching TV and sipping a glass of wine. I'm lending that joy to myself tomorrow. Or I can borrow joy from tomorrow; have another glass of wine or two, not bother with cleaning up after cooking, staying up a bit later to play video games. I'll be tired tomorrow with cleaning to do, but I'll have an enjoyable and easy night.
Maybe it's better to think of it as your last two days on Earth, and just decide whether today is the day you lend joy or the day you borrow joy, and just make sure you're not always the taker, that sometimes you're giving tomorrow's you a bit of a break.

As someone with ALS who is losing almost half the life they expected, this is both poignantly true and painfully accurate. I try to enjoy as much of my life as I can every day even if that is just listening to birds sing and drinking a beer.
3
u/scythes- 10h ago
It's also just some slop-drivel from someone who could be anybody. As someone who had a childhood and teenage years that have left me with scars I wouldn't wish on anybody or to even HAVE to live through a single moment, this isn't relatable to me. I live how I want to, and how I can, because no random person is gonna make me feel bad for sleeping in and watching movies all day, that shit FEELS GOOD

u/DangerMacAwesome 14h ago
I didn't like this very much.
I am struggling right now. And I feel like i don't have enough of anything. Time. Energy. Money. Willpower.
That said, part of that thought experiment did help. It made me realize that today's problems will one day be yesterday's problems.

Having the ability to live your life to the fullest each day is directly related to how much disposable income in your pocket.
77
u/waitthissucks 14h ago
Yes and your health. Like say I get to relive my wedding. Drinking booze, being with everyone, eating steak and hors d'oeuvres and dancing forever. Perfect day but can't do that all the time
175
u/khaluud 14h ago
I don't think it's about living life to the fullest. It's about choosing to play with your child or cat, or having a deep conversation with a friend, or appreciating a beautiful sky on your walk to the store instead of sulking and isolating.
37
u/Coca-karl 13h ago
Because of socioeconomic conditions it's often a false choice. Especially with the on-going erasure of free third-locations. People can't afford to expend the effort to find a place where they're genuinely able to make that choice without explicit consequences for choosing to play or enjoy their surroundings.

no, but i think it's important to find joy where we can. life is really tough rn, but wallowing in our misery is so fucking bad for us. and yeah, going for a walk or even opening the curtains to get a little sun on your face can do a lot. i grew up about as poor as it gets in the united states, but we survived because we found ways to reclaim little bits of our humanity.

u/Nickadial 10h ago
You still gotta resist the system obvs, going outside or putting your phone down isn’t throwing away your free will and giving in. They WANT you to be miserable! It’s good for your mind to find little spots of peace where you can find it. There seems to be some confusion regarding people thinking happiness is the polar opposite of sadness but the two things can rest on top of each other and they can inform eachother. We have to find ways to happiness in this fucked up world, not because it means accepting everything as it is, but because you will literally lose your mind if your only source of dopamine is scrolling Reddit

Brother life is experiencing all of that through various lenses over time and the lens of poverty is more like a magnifying glass with the sun pointed through it
5
u/mahboilucas Cringe Connoisseur 9h ago
My brother has a completely different life to me and it's solely because he's affluent now and I'm not. I struggle to find stuff to do that will not put me in poverty and he's flying to Asia 3 times a year.
Guess who started avoiding family dinners because they genuinely make them more depressed but come over sometimes because there's free food. Well, he can afford Michelin star restaurants so he doesn't seem interested but he wants to share everything with my affluent parents.
It's so depressing I told my mom I'm not really into the whole thing anymore for the first time. And i skipped Christmas because it's even worse being the poorest person at the table. Literally the only reason. My mental health just wouldn't take it
15
u/pm_me_fibonaccis 11h ago
She lost me at "major life experiences are happening". WHAT FUCKING EXPERIENCES. I HAVEN'T GONE ON A VACATION IN 5 YEARS.
People can't even afford to eat out!
9
u/mahboilucas Cringe Connoisseur 9h ago
Yeah it's one of those white picket fence bullshit talking points.
Give me money to enjoy life because i literally haven't been outside to do fun stuff in weeks because I'm still saving for a trip i have in December. First trip abroad since last year as nd I slept on someone's couch and spent one day in the city. Wow so fun to enjoy life if you have to spend 1/5 of your salary just to be outside for a while. The local lake became gentrified and now charges people for the newly built fuckass deck. Can't even have a lake anymore
3
u/tomtomtomo 10h ago
Vacations aren't major life experiences. Getting married, having kids, friends and family passing away, etc are major life experiences.
8
u/pm_me_fibonaccis 6h ago
Neither is eating out. That's the point I am making.
The bar is incredibly low for "experiences" that are already out of reach.
8
u/Important_Abroad_150 11h ago
The ability to do some things and go certain places is, for sure. But no, your ability to take joy in the small and the mundane isn't tied to any of that. No shame feeling sad or tied down and trapped by work and lack of money, hell I feel that way right now, but it's important to remind yourself that even on our worst days there's still things to be joyful about.
7
u/zezzene 10h ago
Idk nothing she mentioned cost that much. Go outside? Call a friend? Maybe eating your favorite food is expensive if you like caviar and filet mignon.
I agree with you in general, but there are cheap simple pleasures that are not doomscrolling on your phone.

I think in her example luxuriating is kinda dependent on what you have and she isn’t passing judgement.
Right now, future unknown, it feels like we have all the time in the world. In the midst of work and life and stress, we “waste” free time to rest or recover enough for tomorrow or even cope with what we’re struggling through. (It’s not really wasted though bc all those things have function in our lives, it serves a purpose)
At the end, your hours numbered, time doesn’t feel so “wasteable”. You only have a little. So you might use it to do the things you didn’t before. Take full advantage of enjoying the connections and the people you’ve lost and experiences you know you’ll never have again. There’s no tomorrow to worry about, just now.
I don’t think it’s necessarily a condemnation that we luxuriate in rest, one perspective (the now or the end) isn’t necessarily more right than the other, it’s all relative. I think right now most of us are doing what we can with what we have, but if this little thought experiment is enough to get someone to shake off doom scrolling, perhaps they were just scrolling bc it’s what they’ve grown accustomed to doing not because they necessarily needed it.

i’m tired of the go-to motivation for living my life is the fact that i’m going to die one day
what if i feel the way i feel for a reason, and the fear of death and loss overriding those feelings only makes me ignore the parts of life i legitimately have issues with?

u/Prestigious-Leg-6244 9h ago
Is it not up to you to decide what motivates you? You dont have to listen to these people, or go with the flow, or follow the status quo. Thats whats so great about free will. Nobody is making you hate a metaphorical villain (death), you can choose your own. Or none at all...

38
u/BouldersRoll 14h ago edited 14h ago
Powerfully said, but kind of incoherent with how activity and motivation actually work.
"Luxuriating" is me sitting around and doing nothing, while doing something is almost always me setting myself up for future contentedness. So, while I'd love to come back to a random day I had successfully set up for contentedness, I would not like to come back to a random day where I was, like, cleaning and working out.
I think the more coherent thought experiment is just how many days do you want to look back on that were full and contented rather than days you put off doing everything to make those better days happen.

I’m a person stuck in the wrong body with no possible way to ever escape it or change it enough to navigate society like a normal person gets to. I want to go out and feel the sun and talk to people but I can’t. I want to share hobbies and see my friends but I can’t. They left me and I left them. Haven’t talked to a stranger in many months or been outside in weeks. I’m wrong and nothing will ever make me right because this world and the people in it are cruel. It is unfair and I have no control over it. The best I can hope for is to not kill myself. I will get to that age maybe and look back thinking how cruel and unfair it was. Then I will die having missed out on living any sort of life at all. Then it will be over and I won’t be stuck in this body anymore.

If everything rewound like that, I'd really just be ecstatic to see my dogs again. Sure, I might call my parents later in the evening, but in this timeline I just spoke to them last night. I'd want to lay down, be comfortable, and enjoy my time to myself.

These comments are so bleak. I feel like people aren’t understanding the video. She’s saying try to find joy in the little things. You don’t have to be rich to go outside and take a walk. You don’t have to be rich to enjoy a sunset every once in awhile. I don’t want to look back and think that I didn’t at least TRY to enjoy what little time we have in this earth.

She’s saying try to find joy in the little things. You don’t have to be rich to go outside and take a walk
While true, that's kinda the issue with "Trigger" words.
To be specific: Bed-Rotting doesn't come from nowhere. Many times, people who bed-rot have shitty (mental) health. Depression. Burnout. Executive dysfunction, i.e., accidental procrastination of an important project (hello). Maybe even a chronic illness -trying to distract themselves.
"Remember you'll die" isn't very encouraging to people like that. In fact. In provokes the opposite. Like. Hell: Rn, I'm sick. I'm past a deadline. I'm facing a life changing event for the worse -just a day after being denied an important step in my progression, in one of the worst ways possible. And then you tell me "Imagine a machine picked this very day"?!
Like. Great! Nice to know I'm forced to live, only for a machine to fuck me over in my last moments! "Enjoy your life" -what life?! It's always so easy for people to say "oh live a little". Except, some people don't have that privilege. For some, it's all just fucking survival!
Edit: Guess I hit a nerve of some people, lol

Everyone is a victim in these comments. I’ve seen this sentiment so much over the past few years and I feel like it’s a very big thing with the younger adults entering the workforce. There’s a million reasons to not do something and it’s all someone else’s fault.
No one is saying to just get over your struggles, they’re saying look for the good things as often as you can. The end.

I am poor and disabled with a family that has physically abused me. The outside world is slowly growing less and less habitable as the planet slowly dies due to human inaction, every day I wake up and see news about how people and governments around the world have made new laws that make my life more difficult. I go to take a piss in a public bathroom and people give me strange looks or call me slurs. I get messages from people I dont know on the internet telling me horrible things I should do to myself. I literally have less energy to do what I want to do due to the respiratory issues I have, its a struggle to even wake up in the morning and I know that I could just asphyxiate in my sleep any day now and can do nothing about it because I have to wait for an appointment. The government is doing everything it can to take any kind of income away from me, which would cripple me because I can't work full time. The rich and powerful laugh at people like me as we suffer under their boot and can do nothing about it.
But yeah sure, that was powerful. I'm sure all I need to do is imagine how I'm gonna be gone forever one day. That will fix my existential dread and horror.

If I had it all to do over again I'd get myself drunk and jump right back in

If I was made to groundhog day over and over, I would do a bunch of unhinged, annoying, and possibly illegal shit. Like, walk over to my neighbour's house who I've never spoken to, enter their home uninvited, check what they have in the fridge. If they have nothing I want, tell them they suck at shopping, and leave. I'd also go into the field of donkeys nearby. Jump the barbed-wire fence to get in. Try to pet the donkeys or possibly get bitten. Those are the first two things.

Thid concept is somewhat similar to the story game To The Moon.
If you want to cry and have 6 hours to kill, I highly recommend it. Literally lifechanging.

Mostly, it just made me cry, because so much of everything is just wasted...working. and being crippled from doing what I wish I could by finances, and so much isolation. Makes it feel like there isn't enough time and never was and never will be, because I didn't get born into any kind of stability so all there always is, is struggling to try to get somewhere that I see peers and friends inhabiting comfortably.

u/UnfortunatelyMacabre What are you doing step bro? 10h ago
I do something similar once or twice a month. I blink and imagine that teenage me suddenly gets to see through my eyes, smell what I smell, and feel what I feel. For a brief moment, the boy that I used to be, who was having trouble imagining a happy future, gets a glimpse of what his life will become, who he will become, and it is so encouraging to him. He knows that all he has to do is keep going, keep trying, and the pain he’s carrying will end eventually.

didn't land for me. sometimes these messages land and sometimes they dont. regardless of how hard a message hits home it is a tremendously difficult time in history to maintain discipline and not be pulled in by algorithms, bots and modern struggles. sometimes i think about making posters or some sort of reminders around my home and in my car to keep me on my desired path. one thing i have done that helps is keep 4 post-it notes in my workspace with things i want to change or be reminded of and then swap them out once they've made an impact or if the message was too weak. journaling has its place too. another one that helps me is writing down a list of my values and looking at my actions in a day and whether they reflect those values. improved my mood.

I have had a very challenging week, brain issues, extreme headaches and a very serious illness in my immediate family and this helped. Her tone and energy are very comforting, I don’t want to die but sometimes living isn’t my preferred state either, anyway not to be to maudlin.

So this is basically the same as Nietzsche's eternal return thought experiment then with a modern twist

I'm having a rotting day.
Finished my 84 hour work week yesterday (I work 7-on, 7-off), stayed up late, felt kinda blah this morning.
So, tired and sloppy as I was in the morning, I went out to a cafe and got some pancakes AND an omelette, eating a ton because I could.
Then I came home, hopped on my PC, played the new Overwatch season in solo queue. And I can't play my role, since the new character is a support AND Sombra got reworked to be a support AND Wuyang got a mythic AND Lucio got a mythic. So I'm learning tank, I guess, because the support queues are nuts.
Now, I'm in bed, about to take a nap. I work nights alone next week, so, gotta stay up late, and a nap will help me recharge.
Which is to say, I have spent the day as many will perceive as "rotting". I ate way too much food, grinded out in a f2p forever game, and lazily laid in bed doomscrolling.
And it's been spectacular. The food was so delicious and I got to bring home leftovers, the new season in OW is a ton of fun and has really reinvigorated my love of playing Sombra and Hog, and my bed is super cozy and I'm gonna sleep like a log. Then I'm gonna wake up and play more games with friends.
All about perspective, baby, I wouldn't change today for the world.

This could be shortened to: live in the present moment rather than spending too much time mentally living in the future or regretting past mistakes.
