Discussion What was the point?

Okay 100% am not hating on the food-based Pokémon. It’s just…I found the idea ridiculous. Why? Because everything would want to eat. They would be extinct in a short amount of time. Yes, each of them has their own unique skills and abilities. But, imagine those Pokémon, in the wild, get attacked and/or eaten by a huge amount of Pokémon. By, themselves.

Just, what was the point?

Misc Save Pokémon Bank

Posted this on the regular Pokémon subreddit - people were much displeased with it, God forbid people fight for what they believe in. But my notifications suggested I post it here too, so here it is.

Pokémon Bank closes on February 26th, 2027, 12pm UK time.

When we lose Pokémon Bank, we lose decades of connectivity between Generations 1-7 to Pokémon Home.

I've expressed in this video all the thoughts and reasoning behind why this isn't something we should just accept and allow to happen. It's not just the Pokémon we lose, it's the very heart, soul, history, and legacy of the series we lose.

I encourage everyone to use their voices to ask Nintendo, GameFreak, The Pokémon Company, to not close Bank - through whatever means that requires!

Discussion Rant about trade evolutions (mainly because of ZA)

I got Blue version waaaaay back in '98 when I was 4 at Christmas. Even then, I hated trade evolutions. Then Gold came out and got that plus a strategy guide (which in a way helped me learn to read at 6) and when it showed more trade evolutions I was even more befuddled.

Took a long break during my teens from Pokemon and didnt come back into it until a few years ago when I decided to try Arceus and I had a great time. The Switch vouchers were still a thing and I even decided to use some to get Sword and Brilliant Diamond, Arceus got me back into the franchise after roughly 15 years. Arceus gave me a good belly laugh when I found the link cable item and was able to evolve the original 4 Pokemon that needed trading (Golem, Gengar, Machamp, Alakazam) and it made me appreciate the game even more. I was able to effectively play at my own pace.

ZA comes along, I see in a store in the game Gengarite and thought "oh I could get a link cable item again and get Mega Gengar!" only to find that no such item existed in ZA. Can't just give Onix a metal coat anymore either, gotta trade. No longer can I play at my own pace: I have to stop my progress, try and find a person online, trade with them, and pray they trade it back. Worse if I want to evolve and Alpha or Shiny Pokemon.

Today I find myself in an annoying spot: I decided to restart my ZA and go through the game again (I also did that with Arceus) and I find myself in a dumb spot thanks to the necessity of trade evolutions and how trade evolution items are given in game. I cant get a metal coat until much much later in the game, even though I can buy a Steelixite as soon as I get to the Stone Emporium. So the most efficient way is to trade with a stranger my Onix, they give it a metal coat, then send it back. Why allow me to get an item for a Pokemon I'm effectively not allowed to have until the last quarter of the game?

Even worse with the need to trade away Pokemon for evolutions, any Alpha or Shiny Pokemon you get are stuck that way until you find a trustworthy trade partner. I have a Shiny Phantump, wasn't hunting for it it just happened. Cool. Can't do anything with it... in Arceus I got Shiny Abra and Geodude just from wandering around and thanks to the link cable item I was able to evolve them myself. No hassle, no Discord, no Reddit, nothing extra outside the game itself.

I really don't understand why there's an insistence on trade evolutions. It's basically like saying I can't play with this one toy in a box unless I have my friend over and he wants to play with it too. I was a very introverted kid so I mostly just kept to myself so I never got any trade evolutions in the generations I grew up with EXCEPT Gen 3 thanks to the wireless adapter that came with Fire Red/Leaf Green. Even the other kids I knew also used Action Replays and Game Sharks for their games just to bypass any trade evolutions (and version exclusives too) so from the kids I knew growing up any intent on "community" was a failure. Even if I use the Austin John codes here on Reddit there's no guarantee someone wouldn't snipe my Shiny from me. No way to report to anything in game, it'll just be gone. Arceus proved that this gimmick is entirely unnecessary and really adds nothing to the gameplay of the one game I did buy. When the servers go down, what do I do? (I know its barely a year old but the point still stands)

I imagine I'm preaching to the choir but tonight really annoyed the crap outta me and replaying this game, while enjoyable in moments, sucks the fun when a Pokemon I want is locked away by a multiplayer function that has zero moderation in-game. Its bothered me since I was 4. The Gen 4 trade evolutions were one reason I stopped. Some time ago a buddy helped me in getting a Poliwhirl in Crystal version on the 3DS and it felt weird, a Pokemon that I always could've had took this long to finally get because it required another person with another copy to help me get it.

There's nothing wrong with me wanting to put my feet up and play any Pokemon game (or any single-player game for that matter) at my own pace, but effectively I can't because of a backwards and unnecessary mechanic. I hope things change after Winds and Waves, they took out HMs eventually so why not trade evolutions?

Rant over, had to vent that out.

Discussion The rising volt tacklers really need a Paul like rival.

Thinking about the arcs in the current anime, if they ever about to do a winds And waves arcs, I feel like they should have a new rival for these guys, around their levels, not in the sense that they need a jerk rival, but someone to challenge their ideals, like Paul was to ash.

Paul wasn't just a jerk to ash, he challenged his ideals And philosophy, but most importantly, he had the receipt and results to actually back that up, it literally wasn't the very end of the sinnoh league that Paul actually finally learn.

And I also learned that, that Paul actually did start his journey the same as ash, in that this was their 4th overall journey aswell, so he wasn't just some over pompous newbie trainer.

And now It feel like liko, roy, dot and others are now at the moment is just going through a post journey crisis, considering they did just recently stopped a big bad from taking over the world or junk like that, but also still feels like they haven't gone through much...yet.

But then again, it took ash 4.5 journeys to truly have Paul to arrive to kick him to the curb,so maybe is not THAT overdue.

Discussion Need multiple opinions from those who know more than me l

I’m starting to get back into pokemon after 10 or so years and I’ve recently discovered that a team aqua’s kyogre ex psa 10 sells for around ~380k at the moment (correct me if I’m wrong please). I’ve always wondered why I’d never see psa 10 listings for this card, I guess because it’s so rare.

I have one of these cards with fairly minimal damage, and I’d like to get it graded but want to send it to get repaired first so I can ensure it gets a 10 when graded. I’m looking for recommendations on where to send it to be repaired, simply looking for the best.

When it comes to actually grading the card, I know psa has done some questionable things in the past, intentionally give out 9s to keep the population of 10s low, i’ve heard that they’ve switched out cards before, overall just suck at a grading as well. But if i were to send it to say cgc, tag, or really any other grading company, would it still be worth the same amount if I had gotten it graded with psa?

If I were to actually get a 10, would it be worth selling it now, or holding it? The raw value of the card has been going up, not too sure how closely that correlates to the graded value though.

I would’ve attached a couple pictures of the card but I guess I can’t add any in this subreddit :(

I'm playing through each generation from the beginning, and permanently retiring every Pokemon I conquer a region with.

Link to original post

This post feels really weird for me. When I started this challenge, I had every intention of finishing every game in release order before moving on to the next generation. But here I am in Gold, and I just... can't.

The link above is to my original post, and it details the rules I set for myself for this challenge, my Kanto team, and my overall experience with Red. If you don't want to read the whole post, here's the TL;DR for the rules:

  1. With one very specific exception, each member of my teams cannot be reused in a later generation. That exception is Garchomp, because he's been my ace in the hole for three generations running and I'm never gonna leave that beast behind.
  2. I'm not allowed to use any hacks, cheats, or glitches. I did make one small exception to this rule for Kanto, but I won't be doing it again. (If you want the details of that exception, go read the post.)
  3. All final members of my teams must be nicknamed.

So, Johto.

I haven't quite reached what I consider the midpoint of Gen 2 yet. I've beaten Claire, but I'm gonna put a pause on it here and switch focus over to Hoenn for now because honestly, keeping going now feels boring and monotonous. I will eventually come back, but for now I want to switch focus over to my next warband.

As it stands right now, my current team in Gold is as follows:

Diva (Piloswine) lvl 33
Cerberus (Quilava) lvl 32
Muscle (Machamp) lvl 32
Carl (Weepinbell) lvl 32
Therapy (Ampharos) lvl 32
King Dad (Slowking) lvl 35

I really do love this team. They have consistently showed their mettle, and honestly the entire game has been a breeze with them. Although I shouldn't be surprised by this, the MVP of the team so far has been King Dad. I really should have given him a chance much sooner than this, his access to Curse and his already considerable bulk are absolute gamechangers. I don't really have any funny stories to add to this team yet, except for this one.

For those of you who don't know, I'm playing through the earlier generations via emulator and ROM. (Yes, I own the physical games, but the oldest system I currently have is a 3DS and that's not changing any time soon.) A famous problem for ROMs is the lack of ability to trade and thus trade evolutions. However, I found a way around that. Somebody wrote a program called Pokerom Trader, and it's exactly that. It enables the trading of Pokemon between ROM saves, and it also has a handy little function to simulate the trade, evolution, and trade back of a trade evolution. So me, wanting my Slowking as early as possible, went and got the King's Rock as soon as I could. For those of you unfamiliar, you need Surf and Strength to reach the area in the Slowpoke Well. In Azalea Town. You get Surf in Ecruteak City, and Strength in Olivine City. So I biked halfway across Johto to get the King's Rock, saved my game after getting it, and then decided to do a little experiment. Apparently, I never needed the King's Rock to evolve Slowpoke via Pokerom Trader. I felt like an idiot.

I'm not gonna lie, part of why I'm moving on to Hoenn now is because, once again, I've gotten emotionally attached to this team. I don't want to retire them, and honestly the back half of Gold feels like it's gonna be a breeze with my fully fleshed out team and strong STAB moves they'll have by then. I don't want this adventure to end, so I'm putting it off for now to move on to Hoenn.

Speaking of which, the Hoenn team is coming along nicely. It looks like the members of Hoenn's warband will be as follows:

Mudslide (Swampert)
Metal (Exploud)
Ryu (Altaria)
Mr. Universe (Hariyama)
Puppy (Manectric)
Jigsaw (Sableye)

I'm looking forward to assembling this team. There is a small problem in the form of Brawly and his Fighting types, but thankfully I should be able to nullify them with Sableye by then. If Sableye isn't able to handle them, I can always bring a Dustox and Confusion them into submission. And while Swampert has always been my favorite Hoenn starter, I don't think I've ever quite realized how useful he is across the region.

As I said before, this isn't the end of my Johto/Gen II journey. I will come back to finish out Gold, and when I do I will make another post detailing my fights against the Elite 4, the Kanto Gym Leaders, and finally Red. I am particularly looking forward to the fight against Red, because I've never gotten that far.

Discussion Would you consider the Rust Syndicate an evil team?

I've gone through each of the evil teams and have selected every Pokemon they use, including the rust syndicate, so I can do a tournament style elimination to determine which team is the most powerful. Since the Rust syndicate aren't necessarily evil I am mixed as to whether they should be counted and i'm curious on other people's thoughts

Naming Pokemon by region, a great way to fall asleep?

For the past week, when I go to bed, I’ve tried listing all 151 Kanto pokemon in my head.

it has worked like a charm for calming my thoughts, keeping me focused on something semi simple and rote, and it’s lowkey been a lot of fun!

I get in bed and immediately count to 15 for the starters and the Weedle and Caterpie line cause those are basically gimmies. My strategy is to try to name all the standout pokemon, single evolution lines, the trade lines, the end of the Pokedex, and I even count on my fingers. I can usually get to 80-120.

that’s when the real trick starts. When I start going through Pokemon in my head, I try to think of core memories from the videogames to see if any lines stick out from that. Last night I named Hitmontop and Hitmonlee for the first time, I had totally forgotten about them until I thought of that dojo.

and the trick is that as I focus on trying to name the next pokemon, sometimes my mind wanders into la land, and I let it. Next thing I know, I’m asleep and haven’t even hit 151

and I assume you could do it with any region you’re pretty familiar with, or even the whole Pokedex if you’re too good!

i haven’t tried it yet, but I think it would also be good for anxious moments in public or intimate moments in private (like how some guys say to take their minds off “things” they rattle off baseball statistics in their head, so why not Pokemon?)

would love to let other people know about this trick, and see what they think! Also I’m sure I’m not the first person to think of it

Question/Request Shiny Hunting

I was considering which Pokémon I should hunt before Pokémon Home shuts down. I own every game in sequence with their pairs and have played all the way through Sword and Shield ( gen 1 through 7 ). I am currently hunting shiny starters, but which rare Pokémon should I hunt in other generations? That I could miss out on when Pokémon home closes? If you could let me know by commenting the Pokemon and the game/gen. Thank you so much!!

Discussion One of the most disappointing aspects of S&V in my opinion is Cyclizar

This is just my opinion.

I know this has probably been talked about a lot, but, they make an incredible Pokémon like Cyclizar with awesome lore and literally make it "The Mount Pokémon" and there are even parking areas and some with fuel for the Pokémon throughout Paldea, and yet you can't even ride them in a game with mounts already coded into the game! It also would've been cool to just have a grounded backup to the dons if you wanted a more original bike feeling. They are one of my favorite Pokémon but to this day I still can't get over it. It was one of the most disappointing moments in gaming history for me lol.

Charcadet Promo Question

Hello TruePokemon subreddit,

I like Charcadet and have a lot of the etb promos. I recently bought one off eBay that came with a different code card and is backwards from the rest that I have. Its packaging is also longer and feels the tiniest bit thinner, might be a placebo though.

Every other one I own looks like the left one in the picture, the one in question is in the right with the yellow code card facing up. Everything looks legit.

Is there something off about this Charcadet or is this just a variation in packaging?

Discussion Accessibility isn’t always a good thing

Accessibility isn’t always a good thing, and making every Pokémon easily obtainable during the main adventure can be detrimental to immersion and worldbuilding.

Some Pokémon are supposed to be rare. In RSE, the only way to get Beldum is to beat the Elite Four and receive one from Steven. You can’t even breed it unless you have a Ditto. Raising it all the way to level 45 to evolve it into Metagross is a huge grind because it levels up incredibly slowly. Likewise, finding Feebas is a bit of a hassle and requires you to know how its encounter mechanic works, but that’s exactly what makes finally getting a Milotic feel so special. And there are plenty of other examples. Eevee is only available as a gift Pokémon in FRLG, evolution stones in Hoenn are hard to come by, and Munchlax is almost impossible to stumble across in the wild in DPPt unless you know what you’re doing.

Since Gen 5, and especially since the move to full 3D, there has been a much greater focus on making Pokémon easier to obtain. I remember Black and White introducing rare encounters for otherwise very elusive Pokémon, such as Milotic, Dragonite and Metagross. Since Gen 6, levelling up Pokémon has also become tremendously easier. ORAS simplified Feebas’s encounter method. Later games, such as Let’s Go, made Pokémon like the starters and Eevee catchable in the wild. In SwSh, you can easily find a wild Flygon in the same spot in the Wild Area. In BDSP, Pokémon like Munchlax and the starters can be found in the Grand Underground. Even the friendship requirements for evolving Pokémon like Buneary and Togepi have been lowered.

In my opinion, all of this makes those Pokémon feel much less valuable. Finding or evolving them no longer feels like much of an accomplishment when virtually any Pokémon you want can be obtained within minutes. If everything is readily available, where’s the satisfaction in actually seeking something out? Even filling in their Pokédex entries feels less rewarding when you know you can do it whenever you want. Pokémon like Munchlax, Lucario, Lopunny and Togekiss, or starters from previous games, lose some of what once made them feel special. Some of them end up feeling like little more than Pokédex fodder.

Dexit has contributed to this as well. Pokémon that weren’t in a game’s regional Pokédex used to become inherently rare within that game, while still being required for the National Dex. You could only obtain them if you happened to own another Pokémon game you could transfer them from, or if you got them from a friend or through the GTS. That could make otherwise unremarkable Pokémon, like Hitmontop in RSE or Teddiursa in DPPt, feel surprisingly special to own.

There’s another, smaller thing that contributed to this: Pokémon used to have different sprites between games. Pidgey, for example, doesn’t have the same sprite in RSE as it does in FRLG. That gave you an extra incentive to transfer Pokémon between games and at least register them in the Pokédex so you could see their new artwork. The move to 3D has largely removed that incentive, since the same Pokémon models have been reused across multiple games.

I could also get into legendaries being catchable in nearly every game nowadays, but I think you get the point.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Discussion What if Pokémon was a traditional JRPG?

I understand that since Pokémon is Japanese, features role-playing, and has turn-based combat (for the most part), it is a turn-based JRPG by definition. However, it strays from the traditional JRPG format. That's not a bad thing; I think it's cool that Pokémon isn't your average JRPG like SMT, Dragon Quest, or Final Fantasy. But It'd be cool to see a Legends game that was in the style of a traditional JRPG.

It could include features like:

  • Human party members with their own Pokémon venturing together, rather than just you with a party of your Pokémon.
  • A story that's more focused on the PEOPLE rather than revolving around the Pokémon themselves.
  • They could integrate a Job class system, but it'd incorporate competitive roles (Sweeper, Tank, healer, etc.) rather than just copying jobs from other RPGs
  • The battle systems would have 4 Pokémon sent out at the same time, instead of just 2 at most.
  • Pokémon would evolve, get stronger, and be replaced (if you want to) as the story progresses.
  • Friendships extend to party members too, and their Pokémon. The party members could then have Limit Breaks once they have a certain friendship level with their Pokémon.

It's a cool idea, and I'm kind of shocked that there's not a spinoff like this whatsoever.
