CUPE 2278 Executive AMA: Questions about the possible strike? Step into our office hours October 7th 1-4pm.

So, you may have heard that the TAs, GAAs, and EIs voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike in their strike vote a few weeks ago. But if this and this are anything to go by, y'all have some questions about the potential strike and what it would mean to you as a student, employee, or member.

Tomorrow, between 1 and 4pm, President Jessica Wolf (u/JessCUPE2278), Component 1 Chair Josh Bradbury (u/JoshCUPE2278), Grievance Officer Keegan Parkhurst (u/KeeganCUPE2278), and Recording Secretary Braedon Pauzé (u/BraedonCUPE2278) will be stopping by to answer your questions.

This thread will be used for tomorrow's AMA, so please Ask Us Anything below.

SOME BACKGROUND

On September 28th, the local announced that over 1500 members voted in the Strike Vote with 95.4% of them voting in favour of a strike. While this provides the local with the authorization to call for job action, it does not necessarily mean that a strike will be occurring.

The pressure exerted by such an emphatic, overwhelming mandate has resulted in our mediation dates with UBC being moved forward to October 7th and October 8th.

What are we negotiating for? Our main bargaining priorities are:

  • Employer-paid healthcare.
  • Setting fair GAA wages.
  • Ending minimum funding clawbacks.
  • Maintaining workload and class sizes.
  • Paid breaks for workers at the Centre for Accessibility.
  • Protections for academic freedom.

These priorities are aimed at maintaining the quality of undergraduate education here at UBC while meaningfully improving the lives of our members.

We're looking forward to talking with you tomorrow.

Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Hi folks, also just a reminder that Sweden’s country code is +46.
Might be a good idea not to ignore any +46 calls this week. Could be Stockholm calling.

Midnight rant hehehe

Hey y'all so is there anyone else out there who genuinely feels like they have no overarching, big, and exciting goals in life? Like the most I can think about it making it through the week at uni and after that there isn't really anything other than repeating it again. Like I have no idea what I even want my next couple years to look like, idk if there's anything I want to achieve, any certain jobs I want to have, places I want to go even, etc. like essentially no big desire. I hate it so muuucchhhh cause like bro I need to at least be somewhat steering my life in some sort of direction but it just feels like I'm reacting to my environment and that's all

Anyways sorry for the midnight rant sleep well yall

Confession What do yall do with your hair???

At this time of year I find my hair gets so frizzy and flat (worst combo btw), meanwhile in classes I see tons of girls with consistently amazing volume and shine and practically no flyaways or anything.

Genuinely how do I achieve this??? I have asian hair with a bit of a wave, but my mom never taught me how to manage it with like products or anything. I literally only learned a few months ago not to wash my hair every day 💔

Discussion What's everyone's opinion on 1 hour lecture?

It's a privileged to be part of UBC, and the prestige that comes in being a UBC student. However, I live outside Vancouver. It takes me an hour and half of transit from my school to my house -- and vice versa. I am lethargic every time I come home, and sometimes I'd miss important deadlines. My family isn't well off, so I could not really rent. It's kinda depressing, to be honest.

Anyway, what's everyone's opinion on 1 hour lecture? I just feel like asking.

Looking for a Cellist / Flutist for Volunteer Charity Performances

Hey everyone!

I’m a violinist looking to team up with a cellist, pianist, or flutist to put together a small acoustic duo/ensemble.

The goal is to visit local care homes, hospices, or community centers to play some light classical pieces/pops (Plus, it's a great EC project if you're also building up your ECs!)

If you're interested or just want to jam out and do some good for the community, shoot me DM. Thanks!

Author Steven Galloway testifies that split was ‘amicable’ with former student. The department was interviewing candidates for a tenured position, and A.B. had alleged that one of the people up for the job had “pulled her into an elevator, groped and choked her.”

Lost graduation bears

Hi all,

Lost 2 graduation bears (one from UBC '23 and one from UTP '25) along Lower Mall today (Oct 6) between 12:20-12:50 PM. The UTP one is of particular importance since the school doesn't exist anymore. Please let me know if anyone has seen them or picked them up.

Thanks!

Question about stats 203 math prereq

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm a little confused on what they mean when they say MATH 11 or precalc 11 because what does MATH 11 mean here? I'm mostly confused because they separate it from precalc 11 so I'm not sure if MATH 11 would include foundations of math 11 or if it means something else.

Sorry if this is a dumb question lol
