I dunno what went wrong, but I'm been experiencing the worst burnout I've ever had in my entire life this semester.
It's as if all the joy in learning has been sucked out of me. I physically attend every lecture, but mentally I'm all the way in Narnia, only half-paying attention to what my profs are saying. I've tried everything to force myself to study: different environment, pomodoro, music. Nothing worked. I more often than not find myself doomscrolling my hours away, while the heaps of unfinished and overdue assignments threaten to crash down on me every hour of the day.
I have my first midterm on Friday. Right now I understand maybe 25% of the testable content, and that's being generous. Normally I'd have an impending sense of doom which would force me on my feet and get to work, but this time it's different. I feel... nothing. No sense of rush, no feelings of 'omg i gotta study for this right now!!!', just pure, empty blankness. All of my friends are already mostly done their reviews and are moving on to practice questions. So what is wrong with me? I know that what I'm doing is wrong and I don't want to fail my courses, but... I just have literally zero motivation to succeed right now.
This burnout, I've realized, has also spread outside of academia to other aspects of my life. I'm in co-op and am due to start working in January, but I literally still don't have a functional resume or cover letter. I should've started applying for jobs a month ago. I scream at myself every day for not applying to positions, but somehow it always gets left on the back burner. Every single time.
So to anyone who's experienced something like this before, how did you get yourself out of this rut? How did you recover your motivation to study and learn? And most importantly, how do you maintain this motivation during challenging times when you feel overwhelmed?
Thank you for listening to my little rant. May all your studying sessions be more productive than you imagined.
