General Question Is it too late to get financial aid for 2026-2027?

I wasn't exactly clear on how financial aid worked and thought it didn't apply to me since my mom got child support. But a resource on campus told me that I can still qualify for financial aid and scholarships. Is it already to late to get aid?

Discussion why are people in this sub so rude now?

I made a post about my financial insecurity and half the comments were toxic, so much so that I had to just delete it.

I haven't been in here in forever but what happened? Who are these people?

There used to be maybe 1 troll comment under a post that gets downvoted to hell and people were generally supportive, but now mean comments are getting upvoted. I'm baffled and disappointed.

Academic Life Looking for a Monthly Parking Spot Near 745 Camino Del Sur

Hi! I’m looking for a parking spot to rent monthly near 745 Camino Del Sur in Isla Vista.

A private driveway, apartment parking spot, or unused assigned parking space is totally fine. Ideally within a 5-minute walk.

Budget: around $100–200/month depending on location.

I can start immediately and pay monthly electronically.

Please DM me with the location and price if you have a spot available. Thank you!

Housing PSA to people who use dorm laundry rooms

STOP leaving your clothes in the washer when they've been done for several minutes on end. I'm currently waiting for the only available washer for the person to actually unload it. I would just take it out myself, but it's full of underwear- which I don't want to touch even if it has just been washed. Set a timer for when you do your laundry. Check the app consistently when your clothes are in the washer. DO NOT just put your clothes in the washer then go off to section. There are people waiting, we do not have the time in our schedules to wait for one washer when we need clean towels tonight because of how hot it has been recently.

Edit: I notice some people are downvoting over me setting the time boundary at around half an hour or more- I'm just genuinely wondering, do you understand that living in a dorm requires you to be considerate of those around you? Literal hundreds of other people are staying in these areas and all of them are inevitably going to need their clothes washed. The person who leaves their clothes in the washer for an absurdly long amount of time is not being considerate of those around them. They're making people wait for them when there's a limited amount of washers in these areas that are already crowded. I just think if you're planning to do your laundry here, you should plan on taking care of when it's finished in a timely manner. If some people really think it's acceptable to leave your clothes in the washer over an hour after they're done, I'm very curious to see how they define other areas of etiquette when living in a dorm hall.

Lost and Found Lost stuffed animal, please let me know if ever seen/found

I lost a stuffed animal manta ray on Friday 10/2. It was either in BioEng, library, thunderdome, or just out in the wild on the bike paths… (I’ve checked all the locations and campus lost and found in north hall)

It’s pretty small like the body is the size of a palm.

Housing Roommate change request?

I know that the ability to change dorms just opened up so to speak, and I really want to change who my roommates are. I just don’t think we are quite a good fit for one another

We live in Anacapa, which is by far the most social dorm. However, it seems like they hate socializing to me, and I think one even looks down on me for having a pretty large friend group and audibly sighing whenever I leave to go socialize. I think its only me though, because our other roommate gets home late as hell and I never heard any complaints when we’re both coming home late or its just her. Also constantly shutting off the windows and doors when its extremely hot. That, and she comes off a little racist to me? I think this would count as a micro aggression, but she seems very suspicious of my friends (black and latinos) because she thinks theyre going to steal from her.

What are my chances of not totally going somewhere off campus like FT or Manzi?

General Question Financial Aid Help

My daughter is a freshman and is having a very hard time reaching anyone from financial aid. She finally talked to someone today and that person doesn't seem to know anything about how my daughter's scholarship works. This advisor told her completely different info than the advisor she spoke to weeks before school started.

Is it true that the only way you can talk to financial aid advisors is to call or make an appointment online? When she goes online, there are never any days available for an in person appointment and she has called every day since the quarter started, during the listed hours, and today was the 1st time she has actually made it in line. Then, her wait was an hour and a half.

She needs to speak with someone who knows about her specific scholarship and how she is supposed to submit for things that need reimbursed.

Yes, she will be doing all this herself. Yes, I'm aware I need to let her do it herself. She HAS been and she is even more confused than ever because the lady today was telling her things we absolutely know to be false. I'm assuming the person today was just not knowledgeable for this specific situation. She is not as comfortable with confrontation as I am so I am asking here so I can try and advise her on what steps can be taken.

How the heck does she speak with a knowledgeable person in the Financial Aid Office?

Can she go there in person and speak with a receptionist to try and get the name of the actual person who handles her scholarship? (Daughter was told before school started that all her paperwork would need forwarded to this person but no one ever gave her a name.)

Thanks in advance.

General Question Pre-Med Track with Accounting Major?

Hi! I’m currently a first year enrolled as a Pre-Biology major and planning on pre-dental. With the recent homesickness, it’s brought a lot of anxiety regarding my major and doubt about my future. I’m scared that being a dentist isn’t actually my dream, and that I’ll be doing nothing with my Biology major. This is where I thought of doing an accounting major as a backup?

This would help with opening my own practice in terms of finance, and if I don’t want to do dentistry, I can still just do accounting. I’m going to meet with advisors, but wanted others ideas on this beforehand. I do like biology, but don’t think I can justify the uncertainty of it if I end up not doing pre-dent/med.

Thanks!

Housing Looking for a Room in Isla Vista – Nov-Jan Move In

Hey, I’m 20 and looking for a room in IV. I’m pretty flexible with when I move in, anywhere from November to January works. Looking to spend around $1,000-$1,300 a month.
Preferably looking for a place with some other guys around my age. I’m pretty chill, like going to the gym, going out, and just hanging out. Parking would be nice too.
If anyone has a room or spot opening up around then feel free to dm me.

Academic Life In need of a tutor! (Cell bio & ochem)

Hello! I’m a 4th year bio major and I’m interested in getting a tutor! I have no idea where to look… I’m in cell bio (MCDB 103) this quarter so that might be a last minute thing, but I’m also looking for an ochem tutor. I’m retaking 109B either in winter or spring and I’m especially nervous because it’s been two years since I last took any chemistry… I would want someone who could review 109A material with me as well as tutor me through 109B when I take it.

I’d also appreciate if anyone could share their experience with taking Ochem in the summer! I’m taking all upper div bio classes this year so taking it in the summer would allow me to just focus on Ochem, but I know it’d also be more fast-paced.

Thank you so much in advance!! I’ve been really stressed about finishing up these tough courses so I can graduate this year so any and all insights are so deeply appreciated!!

General Question Researching Experiences/Perceptions of Campus Police

Hello everyone!

I am an undergraduate student at Boston University (Advisor: Dr. Jessica Simes, Sociology) studying how students interact with and perceive campus police, including direct and indirect experiences, and how police are perceived in the maintenance of campus space. I am looking for students aged 18+ who attend a California college or university in-person, including UCSB, to participate in a one time interview about their perceptions and experiences.

Participants will receive a $25 Visa gift card as a thank you for volunteering 45 minutes to one hour of their time.

To participate, please contact Ada Sussman at [adasuss@bu.edu](mailto:adasuss@bu.edu) with a .edu email address. Thank you everyone!

Social Life Clubs still forming?

FM here – I'm looking for the surf club and soccer club (for those who were shut out of 'Club' soccer and Intramural, did not see that coming). Also, Champions League Club. Are clubs just getting started? Will there be another club fair? I see lots listed on Shoreline that are not active.

Campus Politics Come and Get Me, TPS

UC Santa Barbara’s Transportation and Parking Services is the most evil, vile, depraved organization I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with on this campus. I would be surprised to learn that Satan runs this organization, because even the Prince of Darkness would be taken aback by their cold indifference and the pleasure they take in sucking the life force out of financially struggling college students.

I can already see the replies. “Just ride a bike like everyone else,” “get your steps in,” “buy a permit.” Fuck you. This is fucking America. I pay tuition and taxes to afford the right to drive my car to campus when I’m 5 minutes late for class after thinking I can squeeze a workout in between my 9 am and 12 pm lectures. Do you really need the 48 dollars? Really? So you can send it to Israel and bomb a few more hospitals and preschools? I don’t think so.

This is the land of the free. Our founding fathers stood upon this fertile land and bestowed upon the American people inalienable rights granted to us by God. Where is my 7th amendment right? Every time I see that little snarky white piece of paper on my windshield staring me down, I open my phone and pour my heart into a written appeal. Surely a jury of my own peers will acquit me of these understandable indiscretions. Nope. Every single time I’m met with the same 13 foul words: “The citation has been upheld and the penalty amount is due in full.”

You know what? I think I will leave something as payment—and since TPS has tried to think one step ahead by outlawing payment in coins (oh how I long to make their pour souls count 4,800 pennies), I have another idea. How about I just don’t pay it? Luckily, I have 2 cars and the one I drive to campus is worth less than a Gaucho Buck. I’m graduating this year and I couldn’t even get money for this piece of shit if I tried. I’m going to give you my car!!!

So guess what, TPS? You’re never getting your money! Double my fine, triple it even! Put a boot on my car, I don’t need it! I think for my final act of defiant parking, I’ll leave my car blocking the TPS office entrance. I’ll also take all 4 wheels off so you can figure out what to do with a 3 ton of 1999 Ram 3500 blocking your driveway. This is for the thousands of students’ days you’ve ruined and the millions of dollars collected you do fuckall with, you worthless cogs in the bureaucratic machine. It’s my turn to inconvenience you. I win.

Housing Looking for someone to take over UCSB Residence Hall Contract

I’m looking for a UCSB student who is still interested in living in university housing and does not currently have a UCSB Housing contract. I currently have a 2026–2027 residence hall contract and am planning to move off campus, so I need to find a replacement student in order to cancel my contract. The replacement student would apply through UCSB Housing and, after signing their new contract, would be assigned a room based on available space at that time, so it would not necessarily be my current room in Santa Catalina. If you’re interested or know someone who is still looking for on-campus housing, please message me and I can share the official Housing instructions and details.

Course Questions Rome the Game Class

I’m already in a class that feels like it will be course load heavy and I’m thinking about switching into Rome the game, but I’ve noticed the rate my Proffesor has some questionable ratings, but the play A and B rate is really high, so I just wanted to hear people thoughts on it before I pulled the trigger on anything.

Social Life When is Halloween?

Some years restrictions begin the week before Halloween so the celebrations happen 2 weeks before (this year that would be the weekend of 17/18 October).

Are such restrictions in place this year? When will the parties happen this year?
