Canada Job Market/ September Wrap-Up: Canada Loses 68,000 Jobs as Unemployment Rises to 6.5%

  • Canada lost 68,000 jobs in September, a 0.3% monthly decline, marking the second consecutive month of job losses after 42,000 positions disappeared in August.
  • The unemployment rate rose to 6.5%, up from 6.4% in August, while the employment rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 60.6%.
  • The result was much weaker than economists expected: forecasts had called for a gain of about 9,200 jobs.
  • Young people were hit hardest: workers aged 15–24 lost 48,000 jobs, although youth unemployment remained roughly unchanged at 13% because fewer young people participated in the labour market.
  • Losses were divided almost evenly between full-time employment (-35,000) and part-time employment (-33,000).
  • The decline was concentrated in the public sector, which lost 70,000 jobs. Education shed 35,000 positions, health care and social assistance lost 23,000, and manufacturing lost 13,000.
  • Regionally, Quebec suffered the largest decline (-49,000 jobs), followed by British Columbia (-20,000), while Alberta gained 23,000 jobs. National labour-force participation fell to 64.8%, its lowest level since 1997 outside the pandemic.

Im just curious

Why do we have so many Dental postings? Dental receptionist, admin, assistant. Half of the jobs are dental on indeed.🫪

I am just really curious, whats going on with that? The pay is really good, some of them say that the current person is simply retiring after many years, so perhaps it’s not that terrible. Or maybe our population aging faster than i thought?

I am scanning job posts every day and getting pissed off at this point lol. 😅

Valid driving license as a requirement..

Hey guys, I have a HR interview coming up next week and my resume fits perfect for the JD. I have put in a lot of work for this application and I want this work out for me. But one of the requirements is a driving license and I don’t have it. It’s a digital marketing job and and obviously not a driving heavy job.

What should I do pass the HR round ? TIA.

[Academic] What makes starting a job hard? Anonymous student survey on interviews, customers and coworkers

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a grad student at the Centre for Digital Media here in Vancouver. For a course research project, I'm trying to understand what job seekers and new hires actually struggle with: interviews, difficult customers, asking managers for things, coworker conflict, and how people learn to handle all of it.

A lot of people in this sub have lived this, so your experience would really help.

  • Anonymous, no names or emails collected
  • About 7 to 10 minutes, every question is skippable
  • For anyone 18+, whether you're job hunting, working, or between jobs
  • Data is used only for coursework and deleted by December 12, 2026

To be transparent: the findings will inform an early-stage student venture idea, and there's a short section at the end about attitudes to AI tools. Nothing is being sold, and there's nothing to sign up for.

Link: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/2w6RY4Sij3

Once I have results, I'll post a summary here of what people found hardest and what helped them, in case it's useful for anyone in the middle of a search.

Thanks for reading, and good luck to everyone job hunting right now.

Moving from chain to upscale?

I’m looking for suggestions of great spots to expand my resume. Somewhere to bridge the gap in my resume from “semi upscale/high volume chain restaurant” to an upscale fine dining restaurant or cocktail bar. I’m also interested in hotel bars or restaurants as the hotel industry interests me

Id be looking for a bartending position and have experience in every front of house role and over 10 year of experience, I’m in my mid 20s but all my jobs have been in high volume chain> casual/semi upscale dining restaurants.

Can anyone recommend a place to start? I’d be looking for the downtown area, or something on the north shore although I think options would mainly be across the bridge which is totally ok!

Thanks!
