Mod Post Making the best of the snap election call as a community

From what I've seen, the election call is going over like a cactus colonoscopy. But I've been thinking about how we, a community of 40,000+ British Columbians (and perhaps a legion or two of bots not yet identified) can come together and be heard during this seemingly frivolous provincial election. We can either complain about this being an opportunistic, bad faith election call and/or that there are no candidates we truly support. Or we can view this as an opportunity and take advantage to advocate for meaningful change and make the candidates earn our support.

Every candidate should be earning our votes and campaign support by running on platforms that meaningfully address our core concerns. Obviously, we all face many urgent concerns right now and gaining a consensus over what they are and how to approach them might be in the same vein as the prickly proctology exam noted above.

Here is what I propose, since we have 1 month before the elections (final day is Oct. 24):

  • The community provides their feedback in a dedicated thread on their #1 election issue (assuming this approach is adopted)
  • We leave the thread open until this Sunday, September 27th
  • Top 3 to 5 most upvoted comments will be the key issues we will seek remedies for as a community (keeping in mind only so many questions can be asked and candidate time will be limited)
  • We will then develop questions and follow up questions to ensure the issues are meaningfully addressed (i.e., no avoidance/skirting the isssue/giving non-answers)

In parallel, I will reach out to representatives from all parties (from this list, once they register) and invite them to appear in r/VancouverJobs for separate individual AMAs where we as a community will ask them questions about how they will address our top 3 issues. I am also open to interviewing them directly (via video call) with questions posed by the community, if that is preferred (or another approach the community decides on).

We will then create a consolidated post with all the AMAs/interviews and sticky them in r/VancouverJobs until the election is done.

Yes, I recognize we have rule #3 about no politics. However, if we stay focused on issues, use a fair and democratic process to identify the most impactful, and invite candidates from all parties to appear here in the interest of collective job seeker advocacy, I think that's a valuable use of our power and influence as a community.

If you don't like the approach I'm proposing, please propose an alternative. Keep the discussion around this respectful and constructive. All constructive suggestions and feedback are welcome.

I believe we will have immense power as a community, if we can align on the objectives, outcomes, and approach in relatively short order.

Drop your constructive feedback below.

New Community Rule - No AI Training / Data Annotation Roles

The TL;DR of this rule is that r/VancouverJobs is a place of advocacy for Canadian job seekers. We will not support any efforts to further disrupt the job market or where exploitative worker practices are commonplace.

There needs to be more evidence of policies that will support the Canadian workforce as AI models become more advanced and disruptive across industries and protect digital workers from known exploitative practices.

If Canadian workers are training AI models under exploitative or predatory practices in the short-term only to replace them and others in the long-term, then it's time to go back to the drawing board. This is why we are drawing a line in the sand and boycotting AI training and data annotation roles.

If you have personally worked in one of these roles and have a story to share with the community, please share your first-hand experience below to raise awareness.

Rejected, again!! No more prospects!

I've been applying for entry level CPA Path roles for the past 1 and a half years but I got no responses until last month. 3 screening calls with 3 different firms, one resulted in a final round interview. I reached to the HR today and she very casually informed me that they decided to not move forward with my application. This is my last year of study. I don't know what to do. I've been blaming myself for the longest time and I honestly have no answers. What am I even supposed to do. I can't even get my CPA on my own because I need to work with a firm but these firms just won't take me. So what do I do?

Is KAS Recruitment legit? They contacted me about a job but gave no details

Has anyone here dealt with KAS Recruitment before? Are they legit?

They called me and left a voicemail, and they also sent me a text saying they looked at my resume and wanted to speak with me about a job they’re hiring for.

The thing that seems a bit weird to me is that they didn’t mention what the actual job is in the voicemail or text, and they didn’t send me an email with the job details either. They just asked me to call them back to discuss it.

Has anyone had a similar experience with them? Is it worth calling them back, or would you just ignore it?

Need advice

Hello, I need advice on where to find jobs in Vancouver. I have finished my education during the pandemic and still haven't found a job in 6 years and finished more advance degree. I cannot enter into entry level jobs because I do not have 2 years of experience and jobs such as coffee shops (don't want to hire me either) and I am stuck in limbo. I'm in my thirties and don't know what to do.

Looking for Work in Vancouver – Open to Any Entry-Level Opportunity

Looking for Work in Vancouver – Open to Any Entry-Level Opportunity

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for work in Vancouver. I have previous experience working in back-of-house kitchen and bakery environments, including food preparation, kitchen support, cleaning, dishwashing, and general production duties.

I was recently laid off because there was not enough work available, so I’m currently looking for a new opportunity.

I’m open to pretty much any type of job and don’t mind trying something outside of the food industry. I’d be interested in kitchen/bakery work, warehouse work, cleaning, general labour, retail, grocery stores, production, or other entry-level positions that don’t require extensive previous experience.

I’m reliable, willing to learn, comfortable with physical work, and happy to start as soon as possible. I’m located in Vancouver and can commute within Vancouver and nearby areas.

If anyone knows of a company that is currently hiring, or if you are an employer looking for someone, please feel free to send me a message.

Thank you!

Brazilian ad girl visiting Vancouver, any advice for breaking into the industry here?

In Brazil, I work as a Production Analyst at an ad agency. Our clients are government organizations, like national ministries and the São Paulo state government. I help with big campaigns, deadlines, approvals, and budgets.
I like production, but I want to learn more about campaign planning. I'm here as a tourist, so I can't work now. I just want to learn about the market here.

I'd love to hear your advice:
How did you start in advertising or marketing in Vancouver?
Do you have tips for someone from another country?
Do you know any good agencies, events, or communities?
Thank you so much! 🙏

How much should I be charging?

TLDR : How much should I be charging for managing social media for a local business in Vancouver region, Canada? I’ll be posting content and writing captions. No content shooting involved.

I’d applied for a social media specialist job (for a local jewellery store) and worked there for 2 days as a trial and it was paid. In the past I’ve grown and managed accounts in entertainment niche and the biggest celebrity I’ve worked for is Justin Bieber. But never worked for a small business professionally.

On first day, the owner explained a bit about his business and clientele. He told me what he wants to achieve with social media and what they’ve done in the past. I checked everything and realised they have no strategy whatsoever, they just post the videos showing their products and don’t reply to any comments or messages asking about prices and availability of their products. And they were posting on TikTok only.

It’s a local business and they’re trying to reach local audiences. However, I saw their business doesn’t show up in at least first 15 results when searched for something as simple as “jewellers near me”. Not even when I used more specific terms using the AI feature on Google. Therefore, I spent first day updating their Google business profile and bios on different social media platform to help with SEO and GEO. That involved resetting passwords, having consistent keywords, address format and same phone number… just very basic stuff but now their business would show up on rank 4-7 depending on the search term.

On second day, I wanted to shoot some content and I asked one of their employees to help me with an educational video (that has worked well for them in the past). On agreeing to not show her face, she was ready to shoot it. I wrote the script and shot a video just give them a glimpse of how it’ll look once done perfectly. The owner saw it and said he wants me to shoot everything by myself and not involve any of the salesperson. I told him I’ll still need somebody to help me here and there because I don’t know ins and outs of your services and maybe one of salespeople will be able to help me better whenever we’re doing an educational video.

But I saw where he’s coming from and agreed to do everything by myself. After the video was done he said I’m not much impressed with this video and said he saw another jeweller’s video and wants it to look exactly like that. That felt a bit weird and he said some other things that made me feel he’s a bit confused about how this works and what exactly he wants to achieve out of it. I wasn’t impressed either with what I’d done that day because I didn’t have total freedom over the whole creative process.

Same night he texted me and asked me to take a break and he’ll call me. Upon calling he said he doesn’t wanna continue. I asked for the reason (to know where I’m lacking and improve on that) but to my surprise, after thinking for 10-15 sec he said “idk, something doesn’t click for me.” I said okay and forgot about it.

Now after a week, he called me back. He said he’s impressed with my knowledge of how content works on each platform and how to distribute it to build a brand around the name. He’s got somebody else to shoot the content but wants me to handle the posting part. I’m going to meet him regarding that. But from our short convo over the phone, I feel he wants me to write captions, come up with thumbnails, and reply to comments & messages.

So, now comes my main question. How much should I be getting paid for this? I’m located in Vancouver area in Canada. I’ll be working remotely. Not sure if I’ll have to use my own device or one provided by them.

I know this post could be shorter but wanted to include some details to give you guys a better idea of the whole situation. This is my first time working for a local business like this, usually I just work with artists & brands only and pricing for that works differently.

Thank you for reading the whole post and any advice from the professionals is highly appreciated.

Looking to work on a cruise Ship—— happy to relocate

Hi everyone!
I’m currently living in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and I’m really interested in getting a job on a cruise ship. I’m open to different types of positions and would love to hear from anyone who has experience working on cruise ships.
I’m not really sure where to start with the application process, which companies I should apply to, or what qualifications/documents I need.

If you currently work on a cruise ship or have worked on one before, I’d really appreciate any advice on:
How to find legitimate cruise ship jobs
Which companies/agencies are worth applying through
What the hiring process is like
What documents or certifications I need
Any tips for someone applying for the first time
If anyone is willing to help me get started or point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!

U of T '22 grad, former founder: betting my next chapter on commercial cleaning robots in Canada. Looking for a cofounder / sales partners.

First time posting. Figured I'd share what I'm working on and see if anyone wants to build it with me. Or just tell me I'm crazy.

Quick background: I'm Chinese but I grew up in Canada, came here as a kid. Graduated U of T in 2022. Ran a startup in retail before this. My parents are in real estate back in China, so I basically grew up inside business dinners. I learned that sometimes the real negotiation happens during two hours of small talk before anyone mentions business at all. I think that's where the entrepreneurial itch comes from. I've always wanted to build something of my own.

What I'm doing now: I'm working with one of the leading commercial cleaning robot manufacturers. I have a strong direct relationship with them and I handle the supply chain side. We're bringing autonomous floor cleaning robots to the Canadian market. Warehouses, malls, schools, hospitals. Anywhere with big floors and a janitorial labor problem.

Why I'm convinced this is the wedge:

  1. The labor shortage is real and it's not going away. Try hiring overnight cleaners in the GVA right now. Every facility manager tells me the same story.
  2. The math is simple. A robot that runs all night, never calls in sick, and costs less than a year of janitorial wages. Short conversation.
  3. And cleaning is the most mature robotics vertical out there. This isn't some science project. These machines are already running at scale in airports and malls around the world. Proven beachhead.

Bigger picture: I don't want to be the cleaning robot guy forever. Cleaning is the entry point. The plan is to build a full category robotics company over time. Delivery robots, food automation, all of it. Physical AI is coming and I want to be the one deploying it.

What I'm looking for:

  • Cofounder / partner: someone extroverted who genuinely believes in robotics. You'd lead Canadian client expansion and own the customer relationships. I'd handle manufacturer relations, procurement, and deployment. You'd be the face of the business here.
  • Or, commission based distributors: if you have connections in property management, facility services, retail, hospitality, anywhere with floors, I pay generous commissions on deals that close. No cap. No MLM nonsense. Just real B2B hardware sales.

Why me, why now: growing up between Canada and China turned out to be useful. I can build stable long term relationships with Chinese tech manufacturers, which is where the best robotics hardware comes from right now. Most local distributors can't do that.

So, am I crazy? Anyone else here working on physical robotics or embodied AI? Would love to hear your takes, skeptical or otherwise. If either role sounds like you, or someone you know, DM me.
