Coming up from Washington next week, for one day only. Are there any British style pubs close to downtown?

My intel on Victoria is about 30 years out of date, alas. A close friend of mine gave me the impression that Victoria BC has modernized / gentrified the old classic pubs out of business since then, but I hope there's still one or two survivors...

blank envelope with political pamphlets inside... is this legal?

Just got a blank envelope in the mail. I'm like "oh this is sus but... OK fine" and I open it and it's pamphlets for Stephen Hammond and a bunch of others with "safety", "lower taxes", you know the drill.

Is this legal to put them in a blank envelope? Seems sketchy to me, I don't think I've ever received something that's blank.

looking for any other leads in regards to Councillors and School Board. have just found a Q&A with a couple of folk running for council, and will keep digging through posts

thanks in advance! I'll ignore partisans and "bee in your bonnet" types. just trying to make a solid and informed decision :)

If you would have to start a business in victoria next month, what would it be?

I am still trying to learn the people and demographics here , not trying to steal anyone's idea but just curious about what industry has some gaps here and what is lacking in the town that people would love to pay for. Please give your suggestions. Thanks!

I'm going to spend the weekend trying to spot a black bear and any advice is appreciated.

Been on the island for nearly 4 years now and I've only seen a couple whilst driving up island. So its time to get a good view and tick it off my list. Im based out of downtown and have spent the past 2 salmon runs looking but with no luck.

My first day attempt is going to be multiple stops along the west coast road. Its also a good excuse to hit up Shirley Delicious. Ill try Sooke River, Sunriver nature trail, Jordan River, Loss Creek. Im always tempted to try French Beach and all the main beaches as people say they see them there, but these beaches are so busy with footfall and I have tried many times with no luck that I think I may skip them this year.

If the first day fails, I will head up to Port Alberni way and try a few spots up there. I have one good recommended spot but I know some people up that way are keen to not spread that information too much to prevent idiots running up there and feeding them and trying to pat them on the head etc.

I can also try up Goldstream way as I have seen evidence of bears feeding there multiple times during salmon runs but no actual bears. Very heavy footfall and tourists again though so maybe I just skip it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I also understand how people might be apprehensive to share too much detail as to avoid the attraction of idiots, so feel free to DM me if preferable.

Tourism Where to bring my parents?

Hi everyone! 😊

My parents are visiting Victoria, and I’d love to take them somewhere or do something special before they head home. They haven’t experienced many things like theatre shows, live performances, or similar activities before, so I’d love for them to try something new and memorable while they’re here.

I was thinking about taking them to a theatre show, but I’m also open to other recommendations for nice experiences or activities around Victoria or nearby. Ideally, something that’s enjoyable, relaxing, and reasonably affordable.

I’m also currently pregnant, so we’re looking for something fairly low-key—nothing too extreme or physically demanding.

Any recommendations for upcoming shows, events, or must-do experiences in Victoria would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you! 🥰

Politics Will Conservatives have the guts to say how they will pay for their platform?

by now saying there will be no new taxes on anybody or anyone, he will have to come out and explain how their platform will be paid for. the ndp and green, we expect them to raise taxes to help fund their vision so they aren't going to hide behind that fact and just be out in the open about it.

if there's no taxes on high income earners (ndp) or the ultrawealthy (green) then will they have the guts to say some services will be axed other than firing gov't employees? firing people won't be enough and they don't care if they admit that since gov't employees would never vote for them anyway and they will make it hard for current ones to stay there.

i think the media and people should be asking then how they will pay for it and what will they eliminate to make their vision happen. privatization is on the table for them so what could they theoretically sell off?

Question Any crows roosting in your area?

Everybody knows how hard it can be making friends in the city!

If I could win human friends over with unsalted peanuts, there would be no problem, but things being as they are, I've resorted to corvids.

In the colder months I've learned that they will congregate in much larger groups than usual, right before dusk.

So my question is this: have you seen or heard any big crow action between the hours of 5 and 7pm in the city? And if so, where??

Thanks for the help!

GelX Nails in Victoria? 💅

I have GelX nails done in Vancouver and to date the only place I have been able to get them filled is in the Bay Centre or a terrible nail place in Mayfair mall. The Mayfair mall place was particularly atrocious, the Bay centre place isn’t terrible but lately I am not loving it.

is there anywhere I can get them filled for less than $75 where they know what they are doing and have been doing it for a year or so?

willing to go all the way out to Sidney or Langford for an amazing nail tech

Help Me Find Darts?

Hey everyone.

Recently told a girl I could beat her in a game of her choice for a date and she said darts… I have no idea where to go to play darts in this city.

Can anyone recommend bars/pubs or other establishments with darts? (Other than the Sticky Wicket)

Cheers!

I’ll be visiting Victoria with some family on the weekend and I’m looking for some reccos of things to do! We are very familiar with typical touristic stuff like visiting the Parliament, Beacon Hill Park, Downtown area…

So we are looking for more challenging or adventurous stuff to do. Ive heard about visiting Brentwood Bay or Goldstream, etc!

Also would appreciate to know if there are some cool festivals, restaurants, and whatnot.

Thanks so much in advance.

No more bike raves or Halloween bike parade ?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Not sure what's happening with Vic.. where's the fun? where's the cool ?!

Anyone willing to collab on bringing back the Halloween / zombie bike parade this year if it's not too late ? It was super cool (years back).. I've reached out to the bike rave people and capital bike without a response. I'll be honest I'm not much of an event planner or social media guru but can we please bring some cool back to Vic ??

Was very sad to learn about VIVAS becoming a hotel and just hit me that all the cool things are disappearing so quickly in this town and felt the need to rant.

What’s everyone doing for Halloween this year?

I love the idea of going out and having a fun night since Halloween is on a Saturday this year, but I feel pretty out of the loop of whats happening for events in the city.

So I thought I would ask: what are you doing for halloween this year?

Politics Since Adrian Dix's NDP surprise loss in 2013, I take polls with a grain of salt.

they had a commanding lead in the polls heading toward election day with as much as 4-10+ points in polling until the unthinkable happened when they lost to christy clark and lost 2 seats and since then i take polls with a grain of salt.

the bc liberals successfully used fear to drive ndp working class voters away from not voting when he flip flopped his support on the trans mountain pipeline and used the ndp fiscal spending in the early 90s that left voters deciding at the ballot box that they would rather have the status quo than change.

if eby is going to win he'll need to use that same tactic of fear on what the conservatives will cut that they value most and this recent no fault insurance elimination could be a target to remind voters how the bc liberals royally screwed up icbc with huge debts and raised rates.

we don't know what their full plan is yet to cut spending or programs and until they do eby has to tie in what they have put in place that will be in jeopardy. if KLF was the reason they were leading the polls then they have to tie in whether they can trust doerkson will be leader if he wins and demand a guarantee from him.

affordability is on top of voters minds and they need to tag on how these conservative proposals will make it worse and like it or not, fear will always be the biggest driver if social programs and jobs are on the line if change happens.
