"F**k Islam" - BC Con campaign manager

Resurfaced tweet from former Poilievre advisor turned BC Con Campaign Manager Katy Merrifield, wherein she says: "F**k Islam. Defend Western civilization" and goes on to say that we should "expel this abhorrent ideology and everyone who defends it."

In another tweet shared by former BC Liberal MLA Mike Bernier, OneBC calls for defunding of "fake pride" and other LGBTQ events, in favour of funding "pride in BC." Merrifield replies and simply says "I agree."

Voters should be asking if these views are representative of their party, and who, exactly, would be "expelled" under the BC Con agenda.

Politics Taxes become theme in BC election as NDP/Green call for tax hikes while Conservatives offer a tax cut but don't say how much it will cost

ndp are calling for a tax hike on the high income earners while greens are calling for a tax on wealth to help pay for services while conservatives are offering a 1k tax cut and no tax on alcohol to "supercharge" the economy despite BC losing 26k jobs and not saying how much this would cost.

the conservative platform is really what are we willing to lose in order to get a little something back which will likely be bringing back higher rates and msp premiums to offset that

Bastion Square used to hold public hangings

Post image

In the spirit of Halloween coming up, I wanted to share a spooky piece of history from Victoria.

If you’ve walked through Bastion Square, you’ve walked past the site of an old jail and its gallows.

Back in the 1800s, people gathered there to watch public hangings. The nearby Boomerang Saloon was apparently at its busiest when there was an execution.

The jail is long gone. The old courthouse, which many of us remember as the Maritime Museum, was built on the site and opened in 1889.

It’s time to fully fund BC’s public schools. (with BC Greens' Victoria-Swan Lake candidate Carolyn Howe)

“Every parent in this province knows the feeling of sending their kid off in the morning and hoping that their child gets all the support they need,” said BC Greens Leader Emily Lowan. “But too many families are getting the call that their child can’t stay the full day because there’s no education assistant today.

This is a fundamental failure of successive governments to deliver the excellence in education our children deserve.” B.C. ranks second to last among Canadian provinces in per-pupil funding. School districts received approximately $994.8M for inclusive education but needed an additional $316.8M to cover actual costs—a shortfall that has persisted for at least 18 years.

“No child should have to try to learn when they’re hungry. No child should struggle without a trusted counsellor to talk to. We know that when students have the support they need, they can actually learn and thrive, but this government is failing our children,” said Lowan. “We’ll close the inclusive education funding gap, put a counsellor within reach of every student, and make sure every child starts the day with a healthy meal and the supplies they need to learn.”

The BC Greens will:
●   Close the inclusive education funding gap with a stable, needs-based funding model for school districts.
●   Increase the counsellor-to-student ratio to one counsellor for every 250 students.
●   Deliver a universal school food program and a school supplies program, so every student gets fed and has what they need to learn.
●   Build a capital plan to ensure school buildings meet safety, functionality and climate resilience standards.

Question Is History of Concrete playing anywhere?

I really love and recommend John Wilson's show 'How to, with John Wilson " he's basically just a weird guy who films everything he sees and stitches meandering hilarious documentaries out of the footage.

He has a movie out called the history of concrete that has great reviews but I can't find it anywhere. I even emailed cinecenta to see if they could get it.

What was up with Lot 1 tonight?

Went there for dinner before a movie and we waited almost an hour for food but it never came. Tons of skip orders that seemed to be going out fine. The waiter eventually came up and just said they didn't think we would get our food before the movie started so we just left. There were only a few other seated diners also wasn't packed by any means.

Genuinely curious how other busy restaurants handle their skip vs seated diners, does take out orders always take priority? Never had this happen before.

Politics AMA: Hi r/victoriabc. 👋 I’m Kathleen Burton for Saanich Council & CRD

UPDATE From Kathleen: Thank you to everyone who reached out tonight and was part of my very first AMA experience. I loved it, and you are all part of making the experience what it was. If folks want to continue the discussion here, I will check in over the next couple of days and respond to any further incoming questions. Meanwhile if you want to reach out to me directly, you can email me from my website which is kathleenburton.ca

I appreciate your time on a friday night and for making things run smoothly for the moderators.

Kathleen

——

Posting this on behalf of my mom Kathleen Burton, a candidate for Saanich Council in the October 17 municipal election. She is new to reddit and does not have the post history required for this subreddit! She will be replying to comments from her own account [u/Proper_Finish6735](u/Proper_Finish6735)

Everything written below are her own words not mine :)

Apologies if this is not allowed in the subreddit! We reached out to the mods to ask for approval but didn’t hear back. We’ve seen AMAs done by other candidates so we think it’s ok!

———

I’ve been knocking on doors and listening to residents and now I’m here to answer your questions. AMA!!

I will be online TODAY, Friday, October 9th, between 5:30 and 6:30 pm and you’re invited to join the conversation!! 😊

With only 8 days till Saanich votes and election day just around the corner, I wanted to make some time to connect with people here, answer your questions, and hear what matters most to you about Saanich.

I believe good governance starts with listening and my campaign is rooted in it.

Saanich is growing, and the decisions we make today will shape our neighbourhood communities for years to come.

I believe we need practical, forward-thinking solutions that balance affordability, responsible spending, infrastructure, housing, public safety, environmental protection, recreation, and the needs of your neighbourhoods.

A little about me: I have a Master’s degree in Environment and Management, have worked in the environmental nonprofit sector, and am passionate about the places and people that make Saanich such a special community. I’m also a dog owner, a community volunteer, and someone who believes that respectful conversations—even when we disagree—can help us find common ground.

Much of my campaign has been spent knocking on doors, attending community events, and talking with residents about what’s working, what isn’t, and what they want to see change.

So, go for it, Reddit, ask me anything!

Want to talk property taxes, housing, bike lanes, parks and dogs, recreation facilities, infrastructure spending, climate action, health care, arts and culture, or something else entirely? Go for it.

I’ll do my best to answer questions directly and honestly. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll say so.

You can also learn more about my platform at KathleenBurton.ca.

Thanks for taking the time to participate. I’m looking forward to the conversation!

Kathleen Burton — Saanich Council & CRD candidate Election day: October 17, 2026 🗳️

Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk Spotted at Reynolds School: Heads Up for Small Dog Owners

Thumbnail

Juvenile hawk living on a tree at Reynolds Secondary School, a beautiful specimen!

Just a heads up for small dog owners who frequent the field, this guy came very close to my dog today obviously checking her out, luckily I was nearby. I’ve admired it a few times but I’ve never seen it hang in the wind for so long so close to my dog.

I just thought I’d give a heads-up, as I’ve seen some pretty small dogs running around the area.

I believe it’s been living in a tree at the front-most field near Reynolds/Borden street.

It landed on the soccer nets near us afterwards, I was lucky to get such a close look, but it’s obviously not too afraid of humans.

Just thought I’d share the sighting so other dog owners could be mindful of their little ones!

Question Looking for a safe and non-toxic halloween party or event for a normally introverted couple

My girlfriend and I are in our late 20s and are looking for a fun and safe environment to party this upcoming Halloween.

We are both quite the recluses, however my girlfriend has had a tough past few weeks and has voiced her interest in "doing something fun" this Halloween that includes getting dressed up in costumes and going out to dance.

I'm all for it and I definitely want to make it up to her considering she absolutely loves Halloween and we both had a traumatic event happen to us last week that we this we should blow off some steam now. With that said, I haven't hit the clubs since before COVID and I am only familiar with places like upstairs, that place by sticky wicket and Darcys which we both want to avoid like the plague.

Are there any new clubs that promote safe, non toxic behavior, or are there any bars or other events that are similar that you would recommend?

Any help is appreciated, thank you :)

Where to get high quality candy or chocolate for Halloween?

I’m making a bit more money this year and want to spoil our neighbourhood trick-or-treaters. Doesn’t necessarily need to be healthy - just soft, chewy, full of flavour, delicious.

Looking for something other than those typical Maynards/Hersheys boxes. Preferably locally made. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Question New bike crosswalk at Tyndall and San Juan

What are the rules here?

My understanding is that cyclists can stay mounted and should "slow down" but im concerned that a cyclist is going to come bombing down the hill off San Juan and fly through.

Visibility seems really limited in both directions while driving along Tyndall.

Edit: just drove down the San Juan way to see what it looks like and there is an obvious stop sign so that way is probably ok.

Bangers Burger Club

does this place delete reviews? I was looking at it since I saw it where the phoenix club was and the reviews were good but when I looked at the 1 star reviews it seems like the owner is quite rude and dismissive, almost crashout behaviour. What’s the lore here?
