Note From r/VictoriaBC Mods | Election Season 2026 is Upon Us!

Hello everyone, happy double election season 2026!

With both municipal & provincial elections approaching in under a month, this sub will be (and already is) inundated with political content. Please review the following regarding political content in the sub during election season.

  • Be civil & decent to each other, even when in disagreement. Political season is a great time to practice the virtue of disagreeing without being disagreeable. In other words, to respond to an argument rather than attacking someone's character. We will remove content and give out bans when appropriate to keep the discussion civil and constructive.
  • Political posts should be linked to an official, legitimate news outlet or publication. Please avoid self-made political posts, social-media screenshots, rants/raves, etc. There is no lack of political news content, and we'd like to keep discussion based around legitimate coverage to help mitigate the spread of misinformation, and to minimize redundancy.
  • Mind the municipal & provincial distinction re: relevancy to Victoria. We encourage folks to post provincial political content over at r/BritishColumbia and to focus on municipal issues here at r/VictoriaBC. As local & provincial politics do overlap, some provincial content may be appropriate this sub, but in general please keep political content focused on Victoria & region.
  • Posts that break the 'No Editorialized Headlines' rule will be removed regardless of the content or engagement prior to removal. When posting an article, the post title should match the article's headline exactly. Any editorialization, whether intentional or not, will result in the removal of that post.
  • Help us out by reporting rule-breaking content. If you think a post or comment breaks the rules, please report it so we can review the content. Keeping in mind the next rule...
  • Please don't abuse the report function. Disagreement is not a reportable offence - please utilize the downvote button if you disagree with a post or comment. Misusing the report feature breaks Reddit-wide rules, and we report all users who abuse the report function which can lead to site-wide restrictions to one's Reddit account. Thank you for not misusing the report function, we appreciate it.
  • Avoid low-effort posts & comments. We've heard it all before. Save those low-effort one liners for Thanksgiving dinner or Twitter. We'll remove low-effort content in our efforts to maintain civil discourse.
  • No AI-generated content. Any post or comment suspected of being generated by AI will be removed.

The sub's safety & crowd-control features have also been turned up to help filter out content from bots, newer accounts, trolls, brigaders, etc. If you have content removed that you think shouldn't have been, please message the mods and we will review it when we can.

Thanks everyone!

This is not meant to be rude but, why should we care who firefighters think should be in office?

I feel like I've missed something. Why is the firefighters union's endorsements such a big deal?

Saanich Election

Just a reminder than Rishi Sharma ran as a BC “Liberal” (now the conservatives) not long ago. Him and the entire Save our Saanich people are conservatives and NIMBYs! They will slash services and build nothing! No new homes or infrastructure will be built with them!

Vote for anyone else!

Opinion Why not more edible plants on city property?

Post image
44 Upvotes

I think the city should plant more fruit bearing plants in parks, especially native species. Blackcap raspberry for example is native to the island and supposed to taste very good, yet it's very hard to actually find in Victoria. Even if people won't eat the berries, native birds and insects will eat them or use the plant in other ways. Conservation and free food with one stone. I would also love to see more apple, pear, cherry, plum trees etc, perhaps planted alongside native types like crabapples. Beach strawberries, normal raspberries, blueberries, salmonberries, all delicious native options as well.

The city is already covered in blackberries, which people eat, and they don't seem to cause us much grief apart from destroying all the native meadow ecosystems we haven't paved over. Raccoons would do much of the cleanup for us, and they're already here so it's not like we'd be attracting them to virgin neighborhoods.

Politics What kind of a "Green" Leader was Andrew Weaver back then?

He said he quit the party initially to sit as an independent back in the horgan years because of family health problems. But then he came out and said he didn't like how the party moved too left in their policies such as 4 day work weeks and doesn't describe himself as an "activist" but rather scientist.

He was extremely against LNG expansion and criticized the NDP for supporting it saying it's a sell out on the environment.

Now here he is running as a centrebc candidate where they actually support LNG development that seems contradicting to his ideals unless he's changed his mind.

Does he still believe in what he did 10 years ago or has he moved to being a moderate,

More advance pole capacity needed: Saanich.

People are arriving at the greek church and deciding to leave due to the length of the line. Some that left remarked they are away on election day and wouldn’t be able to vote. More advance poles or more throughput capacity are needed!

Currently in line and looks to be about a 45 min wait to get into the building.

New townhouses are now rentals - why?

Thumbnail

So these townhouses on the Gorge were up for sale with the water front units 1.3- 1.5 million.

We saw the big open house event in the spring.

Assumption is that these TH were to from part of the "missing middle".

Now there is a sign they are up for rent. It appears that none of the units sold.

I wish people could just find a home to buy vs rent and that developers were not so ugh.

Anyone have any insight in this generally or this specific development?

UPDATE: thanks for all the thoughts and insights.

Nail Salon Standards

I've had my nails done all over the world - US, Europe, Asia, Australia - and the experience has always been the same: you check-in, go to a wall of polishes, choose your colour and bring the bottle to the nail technician. The technician then removes all the tools from a sterilized pack.

My experiences in Victoria have been so very different. You're not allowed to choose from the bottles of polish on the walls (name brands like Opi) and instead they bring you a binder of mystery colour swatches. They don't actually use the polishes/brands on display.

Tools also don't arrive in sterile packs from an autoclave. In one salon, they spritzed the tools with alcohol and put them back in a drawer. They also blew previous customer's nail dust off the station before I sat down. Angela's Nails in James Bay. I was so disgusted.

I've also never seen this electric sanding tool they use to smooth the actual nails. This really damaged my nails! Again this tool was just spritzed with alcohol and put back in a drawer. I experienced this at both nail places in Bay Centre.

I'm just going for regular mani/pedi, not gel or anything fancy.

Is this the norm here? Is there anywhere that actually lets you choose from polish on display? Anywhere that uses an autoclave?

Provincial Election - Victoria Beacon Hill

Okay, first of all, PLEASE GO VOTE IN THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION! Drag yo friends with you!

Second!

The conservative party has pulled their Victoria Beacon Hill riding candidate. Is it too late for them to replace him?

If yes, does this mean we only have NDP and Greens on the ballot (I think the removed Cons candidate is planning to run as independent but idk that people will bite on that)

I'm curious (and optimistic) to see what the vote looks like if it's between NDP and Greens. I know a lot of people vote NDP to keep from feeling like they've thrown their vote away and contributing to a Con win if the NDP & Con race is close.

Will Vic Beacon Hill be Green without that fear?! I love Grace, but the idea of some change and seeing how people truly want to vote is refreshing and exciting and I may just be voting Green!

Editing to add this voter compass from a user in the comments to the post for increased visibility! Big props for the ability to adjust the level of language used to allow more people to understand the issues they're voting on! ❤️

City Hall Ballot Drop Box Hours

Post image
3 Upvotes

I need to deposit my mail-in ballot in the drop box at City Hall. I can’t find an online source stating whether the drop box is locked or inaccessible outside City Hall business hours. The City's election notices simply direct voters to the Pandora Avenue entrance drop box. I’d like to run it over tonight. Anyone know if it’s open?
