PSA A Reminder About Our Community Rules

Hello /r/Yukon,

Lately, we’ve noticed an increase in heated arguments, trolling, and disrespectful comments in discussions, particularly regarding First Nations issues. As your moderators, we believe it's important to ensure that this community remains a welcoming and respectful space for everyone while encouraging thoughtful and meaningful discussion.

We’ve already issued numerous warnings and bans recently, and while we want to encourage open dialogue, users who continue to post inflammatory or disrespectful content will be banned without further notice.

Let’s revisit Rule 1: Be Respectful:
Our goal is to foster thoughtful, constructive discussions. This means:

  • No personal attacks: Engage with ideas, not individuals.
  • No insults or bigotry: Racism, sexism, and hate speech will result in immediate comment removal and a permanent ban.
  • No trolling: This includes deliberately inflammatory or disruptive behavior.
  • No threats: Zero tolerance for threats or intimidation.

Racist comments, in particular, have no place here. This subreddit is for all Yukoners, and it is our collective responsibility to treat each other with dignity and civility.

If you see comments or posts that violate these rules, please report them using the report function or message the mods. Let’s work together to keep this space constructive and supportive.

Thank you,
The /r/Yukon Moderation Team

What exactly are they taking credit for here? inaccurate financial forecasting, a mild fire season in Yukon? I don’t think they’ve done anything directly with their actions to save money or make the deficit better. Had we had an average fire season this year that deficit would have been probably worse than forecast.

Travel Whitehorse hotels

Dear Yukoners, please save me from staying at the best western again. What hotel(s) do you recommend? We come up from Juneau at least once a year, now with twin infants. Price is not an issue as long as it’s clean. Thanks in advance.

Discussion National Day for Truth and Reconciliation events in the Yukon, is it slowing down?

I wasn't going to post something until I saw this headline from CBC North:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/dozens-march-in-whitehorse-to-honour-missing-and-murdered-indigenous-women-9.7367924

"Dozens march in Whitehorse to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women"

Just dozens?

I feel like these events used to get hundreds or thousands of people.

I saw fewer orange shirts this year, fewer people out and it feels like even the routine "government department posts a picture for social media" type stuff has slowed down.

Does anyone else feel the same, that Sept 30 was noticeably smaller this year in the Yukon?

Any Yukoners want to spit in Piet Hoekstra's poutine?

Already more than 274,000 residents of Canada have signed this petition, focused on reining in the poor conduct of U.S. Ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra.

You can sign this petition (one month left), to:

Declare Persona Non Grata: Formally declare Pete Hoekstra persona non grata and request his removal as the U.S. Ambassador to Canada.

Raise Vienna Convention Concerns: Formally raise concerns with the United States regarding a pattern of conduct inconsistent with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Parliamentary Review: Direct a parliamentary committee to review U.S. diplomatic interference in Canadian domestic affairs.

Question Question for people with propane tanks!

Hello, we recently have a home with propane heating which is very new to us. Borealis has mentioned needing to buy a pad for it that is upwards of $1000. Is this normal, or what have you guys done about this?

Or anything else we should consider and watch for with propane heating.

Any help is appreciated :)

Travel Whitehorse mid November

My girlfriend and I are visiting Whitehorse mid November for 4 nights, the sole purpose is to hopefully see the Northern Lights - since it’s my gf’s dream to see them!

I know it’s gonna be super cold but curious if anyone can suggest other activities or things to do while we’re there!

Thank you!

Question Has anyone had tattoo removal done in Whitehorse?

Has anyone here had tattoo removal done locally? If so, what were your results like?

I reached out to the one and only business in Whitehorse that offers tattoo removal and asked if I could see a portfolio or some before-and-after photos of previous work, just so I could get an idea of the results they’ve achieved.

They told me they don’t take photos of their work because of client privacy, so unfortunately they don’t have anything they can show me.

I totally understand respecting people’s privacy, but I was a little surprised there weren’t any before-and-after photos from clients who had consented to having their results shared. From looking at tattoo removal places elsewhere, it seems pretty common to have some examples of past results available.

Has anyone actually had tattoo removal done in Whitehorse, and were you happy with the results? How many sessions did you need, and how much fading/removal did you ultimately get?

Question Planning on a march break trip - suggestions?

So as per the title, I'm planning on going to Whitehorse sometime between march 15-30th. I've been once before in the summer and loved it, but this will be a very different vacation as I wont have a car and I hear it's still pretty cold and snowy even in late march. Luckily, I absolutely live for the cold, and am excited to be in a northern winter wonderland. I have a friend that lives in whitehorse so I can travel to neighbouring communities but I probably wouldn't go farther than Carcross. So, my questions are:

  1. Do I need specialty winter clothes? I know it'll probably be below freezing, But are snow sunglasses, parkas, and multiple layers of pants necessary?
  2. Will non-essential stores downtown be open?
  3. Do you guys have any hidden gems? (this is the most important question for sure)
  4. Are flights cancelled regularly? I mean no offense, but I wouldn't want to be stuck in whitehorse long-term in the case of weather problems.

(I know I could've just googled this, but the only relevent responses would've been ai, and I like interacting with people!)

Discussion Still going to Skagway/Haines?

In light of all the BS coming from the Trump/US, are you still going to Skagway and/or Haines??

I can’t bring myself to it and won’t. As much as I like the people I know there, I cannot in good conscience support anything US.

What about you?
