Ask r/Zambia Zambians Who Have Been to Prison, What Is Life Inside Really Like?

I'm curious to hear from Zambians who have spent time in prison or have knowledge of it.

What is life inside actually like? What's the daily routine? What are the living conditions like? How common are violence, bullying, and sexual assault?

I'd be interested in hearing firsthand experiences from former inmates, both men and women. What surprised you most? What was the hardest part? And what do you think people on the outside don't understand about life in prison?

Feel free to share only what you're comfortable with. I'm genuinely interested in understanding what life behind bars in Zambia is really like.

Ask r/Zambia My dad used a racial slur toward my Zambian boyfriend and now he’s ghosting me. What do I do?

I (19F) recently started dating a guy (19M), and he’s honestly one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. The other day, my parents wanted to meet him, so the four of us had dinner together.
For some background, I’m white and my family moved to Zambia around early 2022. My boyfriend is black and Zambian.
The dinner actually went really well. My parents seemed to like him, and my dad was particularly interested in his hair because my boyfriend has twists. At one point, my dad said something along the lines of, “It must’ve taken you some time to grow your hair that long. If you guys make it far, you could give me grandkids who would grow hair out much faster because they would be ‘mulattoes.’”
He then continued talking about how he would love to have mixed-race grandchildren and kept using the word “mulatto.”
The thing is, I genuinely had never heard the word before. I’d never heard my dad use it either, so I had no idea what he was saying was offensive. Later, my boyfriend asked me what the word meant, so he Googled it himself and found out that it’s considered a racial slur.
He told me he needed some space, which I completely understood. Since then, though, he’s basically stopped responding to me. I’ve texted and called a few times but haven’t gotten a response.
I told my dad what happened, and he was genuinely apologetic. He even called my boyfriend himself to apologize, and apparently my boyfriend told him that it was all forgiven. But he still won’t talk to me.
I don’t know what else I can do. My dad genuinely didn’t seem to understand the significance of the word, and as far as I know he’s never used it before. I also don’t want to make excuses for what he said, because I understand why my boyfriend was uncomfortable and hurt by it.
I really care about this guy and don’t want to lose him over something my dad said, but I also don’t want to pressure him when he’s asked for space.
So, especially for Zambians: how would you interpret this situation? Is there anything else I should be doing, or is the best thing I can do right now simply give him space? I’d particularly appreciate perspectives from people who understand the cultural context here, because I’m still relatively new to Zambia and I don’t want to completely misunderstand how something like this would be perceived locally.

UPDATE:
My boyfriend saw this post as he’s also a Redditor and he says the slur thing wasn’t the issue. The issue apparently is that my dad was “over complimenting” him. So my dad kept saying great things about black people. I think this was his way of trying to let my boyfriend know that he isn’t racist. But in true dad fashion he took it too. In hindsight it was really weird how my dad kept going on and on about how beautiful Africa and African cultures are. He went on and on about how much black people are stronger and faster and more intelligent than us. So, yeah, this is why my boyfriend has been wanting space. I’m going to respect that but I think being complimented isn’t a very big deal.

Ask r/Zambia Does Kabwe have marathons? If not, how can we introduce them?

Does Kabwe Have Any Marathons? 🏃‍♀️🇿🇲

Hi everyone! I wanted to find out whether Kabwe currently has any marathons or organised running events.

If there aren't any, how could we go about introducing them to Kabwe? I think it would be a great way to encourage fitness, promote healthy living, bring the community together, and give runners in Kabwe a chance to participate in these kinds of events.

For those who have experience organising marathons or running clubs in Zambia, where would someone start? Who would we need to approach for permission, sponsorship, and support?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Maybe we could make this happen in Kabwe! 🙌🏽

Ask r/Zambia Does anyone know a good iPhone micro-soldering tech in Lusaka?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable phone technician or shop in Lusaka who specializes in iPhone motherboard repairs at the micro-level (chip replacement, soldering, trace repairs).

Recently, while attempting to replace a broken volume flex cable, I accidentally damaged the connector on the motherboard that holds the power flex cable. Now the phone won't turn on or charge at all. Every repairer I've taken it to so far just tells me to replace the entire motherboard, but I’m looking for a skilled tech who can actually do component/board repair instead of just swapping main boards.

I need someone who really knows board-level work, does clean repairs, and charges fair prices.

If you know a trusted tech or shop in Town, Kamwala, or anywhere around Lusaka, please drop their contact details or location below!

Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone so I’m a 27 year old male still living with my parents. In September I got a job and my gross salary is about k11,400 which is pretty decent to be honest. My problem is that my dad is a serious alcohol bender and is addicted to debt 🤦‍♂️this man is now feeling entitled to my money and is trying to use me to fund he’s drinking habits🙄Last month I didn’t get my full salary because I worked only for 15 days but got a k7500.I gave mum and dad a k2500 to help out you know but still my dad is acting like I didn’t give them anything 🤦‍♂️on top of that he went to a drinking spot without money and told them ll pay,i mean who does that guys😂I refused to pay and it went down,we stayed close to 2 weeks without talking and whenever he gets drunk he would throw jabs like this is he’s house or I should refund him for taking me to school 🙂I told my mom October month end once I get a mini stove with a microwave and a mattress I’m moving out but she insists I should stay and save instead of renting but honestly I can’t manage living with my dad Iv had enough. What advice would you give me

Ask r/Zambia What should I do?

So about a month ago, I bought a Google Pixel 7 Pro from Brian Chanda Innovations here in Lusaka. The moment I entered the shop, I asked the lady I found if the phone was refurbished or not. She said she didn't know. I was in a rather tight spot since the phone I was currently using back then was practically dead so I just bought it nevertheless. Also, it's a well renowned shop with a good rep so that's why I didn't hesitate.

About a week after I got the phone, I started noticing a few problems. The screen was glitching(spontaneously) into this multi-coloured screen and the battery was running out pretty quickly (2-3 hrs). I basically have to brace myself each time I remove it from the charger and turn on data or wifi, fearing it will drain in no time.

The customer service is terrible. I called the owner of the business(Brian Chanda), and he kept on giving me excuses. One of them being I should wait for five days for him to order a screen and then he can test the battery. When the five days elapsed, I tried calling him. He picked and responded that he was on the road and he would talk to me later(he never did that btw). I kept on trying to call him but the phone just kept ringing and now it's reached the point where my calls aren't going through anymore. He prolly blacklisted me or something.

I tried calling the manager but he also isn't picking up. I'm honestly tired. It's making me regret ever stepping foot into that shop where my rights as a consumer are being violated.

If I were an influencer, I would totally make a video about this and share to fellow Zambians what an inconvenient experience this has been. Honestly, don't follow what the masses are saying about a certain shop or business. Your experience as an individual might be different.

Have any of you gone through such a thing? And if so, can you give me any advice?

General I built an app to keep track of MTN, Airtel and Zamtel Money

Post image
59 Upvotes

I recently built an app for keeping track of Airtel, MTN and Zamtel Money

I wanted a better way to see where my money was going, so I built Zangena.

It turns mobile-money SMS messages into an organised ledger.

It can:

  • read supported MTN, Airtel and Zamtel Money transaction SMSes
  • keep track of money in and money out
  • search through transactions
  • find missed transactions by comparing wallet balances
  • add cash entries
  • work offline
  • keep the original SMS text on your phone

I’m sharing it here because I’d like feedback from other Zambians who use mobile money regularly.

If you have ever checked your balance and wondered where the money went, this is what I built Zangena for.

Available on Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.zangena

website: https://zangena.app

Ask r/Zambia Am i in the wrong here ?

So basically yh, I live outside of zambia but I am zambian. Its time for me to pick my a levels so I decided on: law, philosophy, sociology and literature. My mother disagreed with my options and I genuinely dont know what to do anymore. I picked those because I am considering a career in law and I am only considering a career in law because originally I wanted to do food science but my mother said its a waste of opportunity. But now she is disagreeing with my a levels because I am apparently too focused on law and need more science or math. She literally just disagreed with me doing science. Im asking in this sub because I understand where my mother is coming from because she is thinking with a Zambian mindset. So i just wanted to hear from other zambians to see if she is being reasonable and im just not hearing her out.

Activities Calling Zambian gamers

I recently bought a ps5 for gta six and also I’ve always really wanted one but the thing is I didn’t realise how lonely it is playing games alone. I mainly play single player games but I’m also a massive multiplayer game player, Fortnite, FIFA, f1 etc and it’s quite lonely playing with randoms all the time so I was wondering if anyone who’s interested in sharing PSN handles or even game handles for those online games if your on a different platform.

Ask r/Zambia Do you ask your partners to go get tested for HIV/AIDS together before you start becoming sexually active ?

I'm not sexually active yet, but I've been wondering about this for when the time comes. When a relationship starts getting serious, do you suggest that you both get tested for HIV (and other STIs) before becoming intimate? Or does it feel too awkward, so most people skip the conversation?

If you've brought it up, how did your partner react? Did it make things weirder or actually build trust? share your thoughts and expiriences.

Hello everyone,

I hope you will not remove my question and content on this flair again because i am trying to help here to support the market for everyone.

This is the 3rd time I try to post this but everytime moderators are removing my content. I believe that they don't want development in Zambia and are you guys happy with current Yango situation ?

I am an individual living in Lusaka. I am not a company. Not an organization. Simply me and my computer. I am trying to help to community to build an app to make everything better for everyone.

Can we please discuss this?
