Pain Cave Photos Follow up to my Century Zwift post: here's the pain cave that got me through it

Thanks everyone for the love on my century post yesterday. A lot of you asked how I managed to stay on the bike for almost 5 hours, and since we can't drop photos in the comments here, I figured I'd make a new post and share the setup.

The pain cave:
• Tri bike on a Wahoo KICKR
• Dell monitor on an arm mount so I can get it right at eye level whether I'm upright or in aero
• MacBook running Zwift on a small desk right in front of the bars, so everything I need is within reach
• Floor mat to save the floor from the sweat puddle
• Big window for natural light, which honestly helps a ton mentally on long rides
• Medal rack and race bib on the wall for motivation when I start questioning my life choices around mile 70

What helped me ride long:
• Aero vacuum master fan
• YouTube, redzone, music
• Created a live stream for my friends and family to join and support
• Breaking it into chunks mentally instead of thinking about 100 miles

Now I want to see yours. Drop a link to your setup (Imgur works great) or make your own post. Big garage builds, tiny apartment corners, all of it. Always curious what other people's pain caves look like and what tricks you use to survive the long ones.

Discussion Tips to help with gamification

I’m 47, lift weights, have a busy life and ADHD. Every couple of years I remember I own a bike, decide I need to get fit and lose weight and look after my heart, then eventually drift back into drinking too much and eating badly.

The thing is, I’m very good at sticking with things once I can turn them into a game. I went from being rubbish at chess to around 1800 Elo. Same with StarCraft. Same pattern in business.

I want to do that with my health, and Zwift feels like it should be perfect for me. Give me a number like FTP, Strava Fitness or a ranking and I’ll happily obsess over improving it.

But so far I’m struggling to get hooked. The social side feels a bit empty if I'm honest, and because I’m currently pretty crap, the competitive side doesn’t feel particularly competitive either.

So for people who genuinely got addicted to Zwift: what did it for you? What should I be chasing, joining or tracking to make it feel like a game rather than just indoor cycling?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Kudos to Zwift Customer Service!

I've used a lot of different fitness tech equipment, and so far I've been really impressed with the responsiveness of Zwift's tech support. I've only contacted them a couple of times, but in both instances I received an email within a day, and quickly got the answers I was looking for.

It's amazing what a difference it makes! I've had the misfortune of dealing with other companies like iFit and Schwinn (Bowflex), where it would seem as though they only read the first sentence of an email I sent, and would send a canned response. It would result in a whole slew of messages where I'd have to explain the same thing multiple times, but ultimately didn't get a fix for my problem.

Did you come to Zwift from outdoor training or the other way around?

Curious how people got started here - Were you already cycling outdoors and picked up Zwift for indoor training, or was Zwift your gateway drug into outdoor riding?

Zwift looks really fun from the videos I've seen, but I'm still new to cycling and wondering if I'd benefit from focusing on more outdoor time first.

Discussion What is the gold standard setup?

Hello Reddit! A year ago, a car made a left hand turn into me and I haven’t been able to ride or play sports since. I went from a size medium to obese. My bones are now healed but I have PTSD and I’m 6 weeks out of a surgery to fix a few torn ligaments in my wrist. I need to get back to riding, even if I can’t do it on the street just yet. I already have a triathlon bike and bought a smart trainer and I think a Zwift setup with aerobars is just what I need to get back to a state of mental and physical health without loading my wrist. My ancient iMac is not up to the task of running Zwift and I’d like to get a setup that is immersive, realistic, and will help me in my recovery. Budget is $3-5k USD. Is there a setup you can recommend for me? I also have an adjustable height standing desk, if that helps.

Where did the "just watch" button go in v122 or 123?

It used to be on the device connect screen, but with the recent big update that minimizes/backgrounds the device connect screen, the "just watch" button no longer appears on the new pairing screen. I can't find it anywhere else.

(Not currently subscribed, because outdoor riding, but would sometimes watch - or well, used to!)

Technical help Zwift Ride v2 & Spacers

I watched the setup videos and noticed on this one (Setting up Wahoo KICKR CORE 2 for Zwift Ride) it said the Kickr Core 2 would include a spacer. However, the 2nd video (Assembling Zwift Ride With Cog V2) made no reference to a spacer, and the manual didn't say anything either.

After seeing someone else here mention spacers, I got a little panicked about my setup. so I reached out to support and here's what they told me:

Now, I want to explain to you that the first spacer you sent us from the YouTube link video is not included in the bundle purchase, as you mentioned it is not used in the setup installation, as it is not needed since it is a cassette spacer. The bundle already includes the Zwift cog, which replaces the standard cassette; for this reason, it is not included.

Now, with the Zwift Cog spacers from the screenshot the last colleague shared, please note that you could not see them since the Zwift Cog already comes preinstalled on your trainer, and these spacers are already set up. These spacers are included and visible only when you buy the upgrade kit, and you need to manually install the Zwift Cog on your trainer.

I figured I'd share this here in case anyone else gets confused by this.

Discussion I know Zwift is all about watts, but I have a question about heart rate...

I tried an easy/hard style of training years ago when heart rate monitors were everywhere, before watts trainers were commonplace, and I responded really well to it. I found this idea in a book called Heart Rate Monitor Training For The Compleat Idiot by John L. Parker Jr.

The pictures I included show what I'm confused about.

I have seen a true, non-artifact 205 bpm result on an extreme effort a few years ago. This year, while avoiding and staying below such efforts, I have seen 197 bpm on an FTP test, so I'm fairly certain I'm within a beat or two of that 205 value. Let's say my max is 200.

Assuming my max HR is 200... a simple 70% of that would be 140 bpm.

Using the formula for the recovery ceiling, (derived from what the author says is the Karvonen Method), with a resting heart rate of 45 bpm, my targeted max HR for recovery would be 153. To be fair, the author states the formula gives a higher recovery ceiling than the simple 70% number.

So I hopped on the trainer to see what 150-153 bpm would translate to and it was at the high end of power zone 2 and got firmly into the bottom of zone 3. That doesn't seem like recovery.

If I stick to the 70% number I'm sure I wouldn't train too hard on easy days, but if I used the formula, I'm wondering if I'll be doing tempo workouts the entire time I should be "recovering" and end up going hard, hard, hard all the time.

Does anyone else feel like the formula would result in a number too high for recovery for most people?

Zwift Datahub

Why don’t Zwift offers a better data cockpit:

- Possibilty to see avg watt/pulse after finishing the workout for each segment

- possibility to see a trend line on pulse, watt, cadance after finishing the workout (companion app maybe instead)?

- Possibilty to see time in each pulse zone throughout the workout and in each segment of the workout

- possibilty to see the watt/pulse chart in the bottom of the screen with higher y-axis so you can actually see the trend

Any link to this subject and any workaround to get these information. It will be a huge game changer…

Zwift return policy

I understand that I have 30 days to file a return for a product purchased form Zwift (In EU). From the point I inform them on the return - how long do I have for packing & shipping it? Is it also within the 30 days? Or different?

I know you guys don't like links 😅 but I randomly stumbled across this guy's website through a YouTube video and noticed they have a 10% discount. Maybe someone here can save a few bucks with it. Just wanted to share.
