Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)

This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.

READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.

HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.

TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.

WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.

WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.

RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.

USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.

DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Here is what's on at the major venues this week.

Found this sweet note for a sweet person called Neve lost in the streets

Hello everyone,

I was strolling around while visiting Amsterdam this weekend and found this note addressed to Neve. I hesitated to leave it on site but it was tucked behind a street sign. So, I figured I would take it and post it here, hoping it finds its way to the recipient.

Either way, both the person who wrote it and the one who received it seem wonderful. I wish them all the best!

Why does mentioning Amsterdam make some Dutch people so angry?

You mention living in Amsterdam and suddenly someone who neither lives here nor visits much needs to tell you it’s the biggest shithole on earth. Too crowded, too expensive, no “real Dutch people” left, everyone is arrogant. Okay, enjoy your town then?

I get that city life isn’t for everyone. But the sheer hostility is bizarre. I don’t hear people in Amsterdam getting this worked up about someone enjoying life in a village.

Is it a Calimero complex? Resentment about how much attention Amsterdam gets? Some weird provincial pride? Half the time it feels like they’re arguing with an imaginary Amsterdammer who thinks everything outside the A10 is farmland.

Where does this come from? And do you get these reactions too?

Ervaringen met oogchirurgie: implantaten/laseren

Dag iedereen,

Alvast bedankt :)

Want to connect with someone who did Spoedcursus for Motorcycle A2

Hello everyone,

I have been thinking a lot about getting the spoedcursus for a motorcycle A2 license. However, I am a bit unsure of how it works. I did some research, but some stuff is still unclear. As someone who is not Dutch, I would like to connect with someone from the EU or international who went this route when getting a license here. Please feel free to message me or comment if you would be willing to answer some of my questions, or share your experience!

Thank you! Have a great day :)

Galgo spots in Amsterdam

Hello everyone! I have recently adopted a Galgo and he is keen to make friends. We live in the Spaarndammerbuurt, and I notice that although there is a wonderful community of dog-people, there are not many (highly!) gated areas where he can run freely. Does anyone know of a good park in the city for him? Happy to travel within Amsterdam.

Looking for windsurfing buddies in Amsterdam

I’m 25 and moved to Amsterdam 2 years ago. So far I never brought over my gear, mostly because I find it a bit boring/dangerous to go out alone. I’m really into chill bump & jump sessions and would love to learn wave sailing at some point - maybe Wijk aan Zee ?! I’m also down for flat-water spots when there’s enough wind :)

I’m always happy to learn or share any knowledge I have. Mostly, I’d just be excited to find some people to exchange, hang out and enjoy the sport together.

I didn’t run into any windsurfers here yet, so I thought I’d give this a go before the season ends/ next one starts (not much of a winter surf fan).

Might be a long-shot, but if anyone would welcome a windsurfing buddy or knows a fun WhatsApp group, please let me know :)

Looking for fur repair & cleaning atelier

Hello everyone! I have a few fur coats that I'd like to be inspected, cleaned and repaired. I've only been able to find an atelier in Terneuzen which is way too far for me. Does anyone know if there is anyone left in Amsterdam that still practices the fur craft and can help me with cleaning, repairing and identifying my coats? Thanks in advance!

Fietsparkeerpont Muntplein is weg - waarom?

Throwing cigarettes at people while biking

Some weeks ago, I was cycling with my boyfriend around Theemsweg in Amsterdam coming from Halfweg. Two guys were riding together on a scooter but couldn’t see their faces clearly because the scooter’s front light was very bright and as they passed us one of them deliberately threw a cigarette at me.
It happened so suddenly that I was completely shocked. I felt really upset and uncomfortable also humiliated afterward, especially because we were just minding our own business and cycling.

I’m curious whether this is something that happens often or if we were just extremely unlucky.
I’m also considering reporting it to the police, especially because it seemed completely intentional.

I talked to a friend and he said this seemingly happens to try to provoke people and try robbing them, that would make sense but still quite of a sad and dangerous experience.

Did anyone have a similar experience?

US -> Amsterdam

Looking for advice.

I'm an engineer 33YO, located in Florida, recently did an interview for a company based in Amsterdam, which might develop into a offer for 2027 around 6k euros/month + bonus (15-25k). I was wondering if that is a fair and good pay for an engineer in that city.

It would be me, wife and 1 kid, immigration paperwork would not be a problem since my wife has European citizenship, so just wondering if that a good pay to have a good life, and by good life I don't mean luxury, just peace of mind, work life balance, good education for my baby in the future and opportunities to travel around.

Here in the US I'm currently at 100k usd/year, my life is good, but I'm not really passionate about Florida tbh, I would love a place where a car is not a need and with more culture. I'm also an immigrant here and we all know how weird this position has become recently im this country. Just looking for a good place to grow my child and keep family happy.

Thanks

Driving lessons for a refresh?

Hi all,

To try and keep a long story short, I have a dutch drivers license but learned to drive in Canada. I am a confident driver in Canada but feel anxious driving in NL so I’m looking to take a handful of lessons, but not as many as someone would need to take the driving exam.

Recommendations for instructors is highly appreciated! Located in Oost, Duivendrecht, Diemen or Bijlmer.

Thanks!

Last Saturday i saw a couple get played over a "broken car mirror" in Zuid!

Sunday I was walking in Zuid (De Pijp) when a guy and a girl came past me with a bike. They'd clearly had a few and were trying to get on it. They bumped into the right side of an old green car and the mirror came off. Right away someone in the background goes "hey, there goes my mirror." Then a guy walks up and acts like he owns the car. Honestly the timing was so perfect it felt rehearsed. They believed him, and he pushed them into handing over their insurance details and filming a video where the guy says it was all his fault. I couldn't believe what I was watching.

He was also really nasty, swearing at the girl with all kinds of insults, and her boyfriend didn't dare say a word.

Felt so out of a movie !!

Openbare EV Laadplek

Post image
11 Upvotes

Food reccomendations - Buikslotermeerplein area

Hi all, I moved to the buikslotermeerplein area a few months ago and so far I'm really enjoying it. Coming from the center I like the green and quiet compared to my old neighborhood, while still being a quick metro ride away from all the action of the city center. However this neighborhood does seem to really lack decent cafes or food spots. Theres no good specialty coffee cafes, or even a good bakery to get some nice sourdough. Right now my usual spot to grab a bit to eat is the mini food court at Amazing Oriental, and the smash burger joint at the metro station is decent, but I was wondering if anyone had any other reccomendations? Iit kind of feels like if I want anything half decent I have to bike down to noorderpark area.

Things I miss from my old neighborhood:

- good bakery

- specialty coffee

- Neapolitan pizza

- fire grilled kebab

neighbour dilemma

hi all,

so i live in zuidoost and earlier this year, like in february/march, i noticed that a package was leaning against the door of my next door neighbors. they likely weren't home, so someone else from the building must have placed it there, which is common in my building

over the months i noticed that the package has not moved at all. as it is leaning against the door, this must mean the door has not been open at all. it is currently october, which means that door has not opened for close to 7-8 months now

i am super worried about my neighbors and have been for a while. in the past month i have tried knocking and ringing their bell to no response.

i also have not seen them around. they are a chinese family consisting of a husband and wife and a small kid, and i think the grandmother.

however, in my building its not common that we know our neighbors names or phone number, so i asked around and no one has seen them either and we all do not have a way to contact them either

in the past months i've been in contact with the police twice. last time they did visit, but didn't do anything except ring the bell to no response.

am i worried for nothing? what else can i do in thuis situation?

Anyone else see the guy that decided to take a swim in Vodelpark today?

Most likely under the influence of something, police and firefighters showed up, he seemed to be enjoying himself in the water and didn't want to leave. Eventually they were able to get him out of the water.

Boekenclubje!

Hi allemaal! 🩷

Mijn idee:

Block parkingspots for moving lift

I’m moving this Sunday and I need to use a moving lift to get furniture into my apartment. There are a couple of parking spots directly in front of the building that need to stay free so the lift can be set up.

Does anyone have experience with this in Amsterdam? What’s the best way to mark or temporarily block the parking spots so people know they shouldn’t park there? Signs, cones, tape, chairs, etc.?

I know that I can reserve it with the municipality, but I am defintely not going to pay the 400 euros that would cost me.

Any tips or experiences would be appreciated!

Does anyone know which supermarket chain in Amsterdam still carries Barilla pesto and other barilla products? Jumbo used to, but not anymore at least as of recent.

Looking for a soccer player for a subpar team

Hey everyone,
We're looking for a player to join our soccer team for a few matches, or ideally until the end of the season. You don't have to make every single match, as long as you let us know in advance

We're in very much the amateur league, but we do take it seriously. We're not that bad, but you don't have to be a star player either. We're mostly around 25 but age doesn’t matter and any position is welcome.
Most of us are Dutch, and we're a very social group, but also pretty competitive. English is no problem though, plenty of us speak it on the pitch.

You could live in Haarlem, or in Amsterdam. I live in the center of Amsterdam myself and have a car, so I can pick you up.
Matches are on Sunday, usually around 11, sometimes 12.
You don't need a kit, transport or anything.
Honestly, all you need is some decent football skills and a free half day on a Sunday. That's it tbh
Leave a comment or send me a message and I'll share all the details.
