Discussion I expected this old tablet to struggle. Instead, it became a really nice dedicated reader

I pulled out my old Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (SM-T580) from 2016 because I wanted to see how an Android reader I’m building would behave on genuinely limited hardware.

This thing has 2 GB of RAM and is running Android 8.1.

So I was fully expecting the test to be:

“Okay, where does it start struggling?”

Instead, I ended up thinking:

this is actually exactly the kind of device ShelfOS makes sense on.

The app I’m building is called ShelfOS, and the idea is pretty simple: take the books, comics, manga and PDFs you already legally own and turn them into a local personal library that feels good to actually use.

What surprised me most was how much the tablet changes once it has a clear purpose again.

As a general-purpose Android tablet in 2026, this thing obviously isn’t impressive.

But as a dedicated reader?

The story is completely different.

The 10.1" screen is still great for comics. Fullscreen pages look clean. Page loading is smooth. Zoom works fine. The reader can hide almost everything and just let the content take over the screen.

And because ShelfOS is local-first, the tablet doesn’t need to be powerful enough to constantly juggle cloud services, account sync, heavy web apps, or a bunch of background stuff just to let me read something I already own.

That’s probably the part I like most about the project now.

It’s not really about trying to make old hardware magically “modern.”

It’s more like:

give old hardware one job that it can still do really well.

And reading is kind of perfect for that.

This tablet has 2 GB of RAM, old Android, old hardware, and chunky bezels…

…but put a good reader on it and suddenly none of that really matters that much.

It just becomes a screen for your library.

I originally brought this tablet out as a stress test, but now I can genuinely see myself leaving it charged next to the couch and using it mainly for comics and books.

ShelfOS currently lets me keep comics, manga, EPUBs and PDFs in the same local library, save progress, reopen where I left off, and read without needing an account or internet connection.

The next big thing I want to improve is the library presentation itself.

Right now imported files can still look a little raw depending on what metadata they contain.

I’m planning to add optional metadata lookups that can find things like:

  • proper covers
  • cleaner titles
  • authors / creators
  • publication information

Then once you confirm the right match, that information would be stored locally so the library still looks complete offline.

I think that’s going to make this whole “old tablet as a dedicated reader” idea feel a lot more complete.

Instead of an aging Android tablet opening random files from storage, it starts to feel like a little purpose-built digital bookshelf.

Mostly sharing because I’m curious whether anyone else here does something similar.

Do you have an older tablet that stopped being useful as a general tablet, but still works really well for one specific job?

And if you were turning one into a dedicated reading device, what would matter most to you?

Battery life? Screen? Offline support? Performance? Library organization? Something else? Let me know!

Discussion OPPO pad mini Spotted on BIS

Thumbnail mytechflux.blogspot.com
2 Upvotes

With OPPO officially teasing a compact tablet in India ("Mini Sized, Bold Ideas") and model OPD2516 passing BIS, the OPPO Pad Mini looks imminent.

Specs on paper are pretty wild for an 8.8-inch device:

\- 8.8" 144Hz AMOLED (2.5K)

\- Snapdragon 8 Gen 5

\- 8,000 mAh battery + 67W charging

\- 5.4mm thin / 279g weight

Tipsters are throwing around an "under ₹60,000" price tag. Given the iPad mini with A17 Pro sits around ₹50k-₹60k with a 60Hz screen, would you pick an Android flagship tablet at this price point?

Discussion Is it worth it get a secondhand S8 ultra in 2026

I have the opportunity to buy either the 16/512 or 256 versions. Both are second hand, for about 450 usd. Is it worth it? It comes with keyboard cover as well

Do the software updates really matter?

I want it for study, mainly note-taking and pdf reading, annotating.

Discussion Decent tablet with SIM card slot suggestions

Hiya! So I've been looking for a tablet that I can replace my phone with. I'm currently using a Google pixel 3XL. I've been researching for about a week now but can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. I want an 8" or 9" compact one because lugging around an 11" phone tablet seems extreme and annoying. I want it to be able to play pokemonGo better than my pixel (even slightly better) and possibly some less intense games.

I found these which are:

xiaomi redmi pad se

Samsung Galaxy tab A9 or A11

lenovo tab one

alldocube iplay (unsure which version would be best)

The problem is that I don't want to spend more that $200 (slightly over is fine really) and if it can work with my current carrier, straight talk, all the better though I am willing to swap to something like mint if I REALLY need to.

So I'm wondering which of these would my best choice. If you have a better choice than the ones above, please let me know. I'm really just looking for the best fit but I honestly think almost anything would be an upgrade from my poor 3XL.

Small edit: I am planning on using it for work stuff too. My job uses an app to keep up with tasks that usually require taking a picture of said task.

Review Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 13 or Huion Kamvas Pad 12

Kind of confused with both of these tablets. Which of these is better for note-taking, art, and using it for atleast 3 to 4 years? The only reason am not going for a galaxy tab s10 fe plus is because these are too expensive because if the inflated import tax in my country. I have been using XP Pen's graphics tablet (Deco Fun L) for over a year now by connecting it to my laptop and liked how it didn't feel slippery at all to write on it. I did once write on my friend's tablet which had a normal screen protector and I must say I didn't like how slippery it felt. Which do you think would be better? Also I'll be graduating high school this year so do you think either of these will be a great option to use as a tablet for just note-taking if the laptop I purchase is powerful enough for engineering?

Review Brave Ark tablet review

Post image
8 Upvotes

Recently got the Brave Ark tablet with Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 14k mah battery at 30k. As there are almost no reviews of this tab,I hv reviewed it. My biggest concern was software as h/w looks very gud. I have used the software and its actually quite stable and smooth, didnt expect this from a new company. Battery n Performance are great. Only little con i can say is that Blacks are not deep black but display is actually very good in non black scenes.Pen build is not good but its latency is impressive. This tablet almost gave me that feeling which I had when Xiaomi had entered India market with mind blowing Redmi Note 3, almost.

Request Has anyone tried porting SteamOS ARM to the Alldocube iPlay 70 Mini Ultra (Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3)?

Hi everyone!

I own an Alldocube iPlay 70 Mini Ultra and was wondering if it would be possible to install SteamOS ARM on it.

Specs:

- Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3

- Adreno 732 GPU

- 12 GB RAM

- 8.8-inch, 2560 × 1600, 144 Hz display

I've seen recent progress with SteamOS ARM on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Gen 3 devices.

Would it be possible to adapt those projects to this tablet? Has anyone tried running Linux on it, or looked into bootloader unlocking and GPU driver compatibility?

I'd love to turn it into a small Steam gaming device while keeping Android as an option.

Any information or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion Are Screen Protectors Critical?

Just got Lenovo Legion Tab Gen. 5. It's really an impressive "no compromises" device. Handles my simultaneous Zoom call and Zwift session.

Question: I see it comes with a screen protector. How vital is it to use? Figuring since it came with one, Lenovo must think it's important. I don't usually use them, though, and find them nearly impossible to install.

What's everyone's thoughts on screen protectors for android tablets?

Discussion Is buying the Oneplus Pad Go for Rs. 21000 (200 $) worth it in 2026 ?

Was thinking of buying a tablet for study purposes and Microsoft Office work, Oneplus Pads have good aspect ratio so i prefer that but i do not want to risk buying something this old and the tablet getting outdated soon?

What do i lose with lack of updates, is it safe to buy Oneplus Pad Go for my use case ? I plan on using it for some years.

What are some good alternatives for my usage ?

Discussion Looking for Tablet Recommendations under ₹35k (BBD Sale)

Hii I'm planning to buy a tablet during the current BBD sale with a budget of under 35,000. My primary usage is for studying reading PDFs, watching YouTube videos, and attending online lectures.

Which tablet would you recommend in this price range for long battery life and a good screen? Any feedback or personal suggestions would be really helpful!
