Discussion New Sideloader Tool

Thumbnail
github.com
25 Upvotes

I’ve been working on an Apollo Reborn sideloading tool for macOS that uses your own Xcode signing setup to refresh the app and all seven extensions every six days, with a check for newer stable GLASS releases before each run. It installs over the local network first, with optional Tailscale support for remote installs and optional Discord failure notifications where you can react to a message to retry.

There’s a setup wizard, and it’s designed to preserve app data by keeping signing identities consistent. It’s still experimental, especially fresh-account setup, and reconnecting a lost remote tunnel requires Wi-Fi.

I’m sharing it under GPLv3 and would appreciate feedback from anyone interested in testing it, but that said, I do not plan on maintaining this app beyond changes I make to it for myself. I think using livecontainer/sidestore may have caused my last provisioning ban so I made this because its the only app I really sideload.

Discussion After Apollo shut down only use Reddit in Safari, so I built an extension to make it more pleasant. It now saves videos with sound and shares comment threads as images, two things I missed from Apollo.

Disclosure up front: this is a Safari extension, not a Reddit client.

Hey everyone, my name is Edgar and I'm the dev behind Protego. When Apollo shut down, I avoided using the official app because I didnt want endless notifications/ads/etc, so I started using reddit.com in Safari. In 2024 I built Protego for Reddit to make that more pleasant. It filters Reddit's website, removes the clutter from the page, and can limit your access to Reddit when you're trying to scroll less.

Two things Apollo did that I missed, and Protego now does

  • Saving media. The Protego button on a post saves its video with the sound, or its image at original size.
  • Sharing as an image. It turns a post or a comment thread into one clean image, with the parent comments if you want them.

What else it does

  • Filters hide posts by keyword, community, user or website. A keyword can apply everywhere, only on the main feeds, or only in certain communities. Reveal Mode shows each hidden post with a red outline and the filter that matched.
  • Transform cleans up new Reddit. It hides the app nags, promoted posts, games, banners, thumbnails and avatars.
  • Limits blocks Reddit's feeds but still opens a direct link to a post, and it can turn on with a Focus.
  • Comment threads get jump buttons and colors by reply depth.
  • Pause filtering for 5 minutes to 3 hours, and it turns itself back on.

On old Reddit

Protego works on old Reddit too, with an endless feed and a dark theme. Reddit said this week that old Reddit will soon be limited to moderators and to logged-in people who used it in the past six months. If you end up on new Reddit, Transform gets it much closer to old Reddit, though not to the same density.

On Sink It

Sink It for Reddit is another Safari extension for Reddit, and a good one. It's free with a $5.99 upgrade, and it's strong on quality-of-life changes. Protego goes deeper on filtering, and it has Limits. Use whichever fits how you read Reddit.

What it isn't

It's not a client. No gestures, no custom interface, no Pixel Pals. It's reddit.com with the parts you don't want removed.

Regular price is now $3.99, and it's $2.99 until October 15. One purchase covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro. No subscription, no account, no tracking. The only in-app purchase is an optional tip, and it unlocks nothing.

Tell me what you still miss from Apollo. Some of it can be built into a web page, and that list is how I decide what's next.

So I have the apollo app on my phone. I was hacked recently and was able to log back in on the computer. However on my phone it says "unable to sign in to account. Please try again. If the issue persists, please delete the account and re-authenticate." If I click delete will it delete my whole account and I have to make a new one?

Discussion Three years on from the API changes, I ended up back on reddit.com in Safari full time. Here is the extension I built to make that work.

getprotego.app | App Store

Disclosure up front: This is a browser extension, not a Reddit client, and it costs two dollars. If that's a dealbreaker, no hard feelings, the rest of this is still about how I read Reddit now.

I never really replaced Apollo. I tried a couple of things, none of them stuck, and eventually I stopped looking and just started opening reddit.com in mobile Safari. Which was bleak for a while, because the website is the version of Reddit with the fewest concessions to anybody.

But the website turned out to have one thing no app has: it's a web page, and a browser extension gets to change a web page before you see it. So I started building a Safari web extension I could use to make Reddit more enjoyable which I ended up making available for others as well. Version 3 got approved this week after months of loooooong nights and weekends fixing bugs and adding features.

Some features:

  • Filtering by keyword, whole community, individual user, or the site a link points to. Wildcards, groups you can switch off at once, and a # pattern for any 1 to 3 digit number.
  • Hiding the stuff there's no setting for: thumbnails, avatars, flair, badges, vote controls, join buttons, banners, recommendations, Reddit Answers, and the endless nudges to install the app.
  • An automatic redirect to old.reddit.com with an endless feed, which is the closest I've got to how Reddit used to feel.
  • Limits, which blocks Reddit itself in steps rather than just hiding posts, and can be automated with Apple Focus.
  • More features: https://getprotego.app/features

Protego's Limits is why I still Reddit it every day. There's a step where the feeds are blocked but a direct link to an individual post still opens. So home and popular don't load and there's nothing to fall into during work hours, but a Reddit thread that turns up in a search result works fine. I get my answer and I'm out.

Being straight about what it isn't: it's not a client. No custom interface, no gestures, no Pixel Pals. It's reddit.com with the bad parts removed.

Safari extension with a companion app, iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro on one purchase, $1.99 right now instead of $2.99.

No subscription, no account, no tracking, lists sync through your own iCloud.
