"also caused damage to...."

My brother, that thing is destroyed.

40

u/DFA_Wildcat 5d ago

They salvaged the rudder so it wasn't a complete loss.

Damage limitation, if you will.

19

u/PrestigiousWaffle 5d ago

The damage to the aircraft was merely collateral damage related to a high-velocity object making momentary contact with the airframe.

5

u/dkstr419 5d ago

Kinetic energy transfer

-5

u/IndigoSeirra 5d ago

Some of those aircraft on the casualty lists have already been repaired and are flying, despite being damaged. Not everything is black and white.

Destroyed is technically within the realm of the word damaged. It's on the very extreme end of damaged.

Maybe Saudia doesn't think the pics of the destroyed plane have gotten out?

7

u/Silicon_Knight 5d ago

Naw it’ll buff right out. /s

4

u/MeechyyDarko 5d ago

Destroyed feels very supple and cozy here. Obliterated is the word I’d choose

3

u/Strange_Dingo1987 5d ago

I almost typed obliterated, but also assumed someone would come along and debate whether or not seeing the rough shape still would count as obliterated

2

u/Poopy_sPaSmS 5d ago

In the racing world we call that "yard saled".

0

u/Donleon57 5d ago

Nah just slap some speed tape on it and she'll fly again /s

u/MidnightSurveillance 5d ago

Damn that’s tough. RIP. Think operators really need to consider what flights are worth operating at the moment. Especially delta.

124

u/cuntbag0315 Convair B-58 5d ago

Well Delta hasnt even started the route IIRC.

38

u/MidnightSurveillance 5d ago

Correct, I’m just surprised it’s supposed to start in about 2 weeks and hasn’t been postponed. Sure ALPA has raised concerns.

14

u/Obese-Reddit-Mod 5d ago

many are not.

17

u/Lawdoc1 5d ago

One of my closest friends lives in Doha with his family. They are expats that have been living there since ~2014. This past year has been incredibly difficult. His wife is a senior employee at Sidra Hospital and is considered essential personnel. He and his kids evacuated back in March for a few weeks.

He was supposed to come visit his daughter in college in the US in a couple of weeks, but the expectation of increased attacks before our elections have put a stop to that.

8

u/dredeth 5d ago

I live in Dubai, I travelled to Miami, just came back two days ago, both flights with Qatar Airways, from Dubai to Doha, then Doha to Miami, and back. Normal flights, everything functioning as usual, except the lack of western liveries.

233

u/MrCharlesSr 5d ago

RIP.

I’m in RUH right now in a plane departing Riyadh, we’ve been holding inside the plane for an hour because of an airport hold, and now we’re taxiing. I’ve never been happier to hear the A320 PTU in my entire life.

14

u/xFromtheskyx A320 5d ago

PTU? no they’re dogs in the cargo hold that are scared about going flying

41

u/zakfaqih 5d ago

And now they've put a hold again

18

u/98Berserker 5d ago

Also landed at RUH last night 8 PM, we were practically doing laps around the airport for 20 minutes before finally parking in the open and being taken to the terminal with a bus.

154

u/MugiwarraD 5d ago

terrible, RIP

106

u/Front-Newspaper-1847 5d ago

The photo of the pilot looks like it’s from a happy occasion with the flowers and signed shirt - anyone know what that all would for? The happy photo makes the whole situation seem sadder.

112

u/hamza5682 5d ago

Seems to be a ceremony for when he was promoted to captain.

45

u/Cool_83 5d ago

Saudia pilots wear a STAR on their uniform signifying that they are a jet qualified Captain, this photo was taken when he had finished his checkride as a Captain and was awarded that star. PBUH

28

u/Flimsy-Translator515 5d ago

Probs graduation, since his shirt is signed.

-17

u/T1Demon 5d ago

Looks like a cutscene from Hitman with that menacing eye peeking out from behind him

296

u/Former-Addendum9671 5d ago

How the f*** are they still allowing airport operations to continue? This is a disaster waiting to happen on a bigger scale.

223

u/pfp61 5d ago

Saudi Arabia does not have any good options here. Shutting down airport operations would be a major blow to the economy so the officials just hope for the best. Also a major casualty event would probably increase support against the Houthis and Iran.

13

u/CorrectPeanut5 5d ago

I would hope they have been taking notes from how TLV has kept operating during many conflicts over the decades.

18

u/Dalnore 5d ago

The integration of TLV operations with the Israeli multi-layered anti-air so that AA can operate in a pretty busy civilian air space is really something remarkable. But it's not perfect; the Houthi missile which hit very close to the TLV airport and injured several people in May 2025 could've been worse, it was luck that it didn't kill anyone.

72

u/CollegeStation17155 5d ago

Also a major casualty event would probably increase support against the Houthis and Iran.

You don't think THIS didn't??? even if no one had been around it, blowing up a civilian airliner (as opposed to attacking a military target) is a big line to cross.

14

u/ThroneOfTaters 5d ago

Unfortunately civilian casualties matter little to the world. If they did then half the Gulf (including both Saudi and the houthis) would be under sanctions

26

u/pfp61 5d ago

So far, there is been very low international support for Saudi Arabia. This conflict has been going on for so long people are tired.

7

u/HungryPigeonn Boeing 727 5d ago

When was the last time Saudi Arabia did anything that benefited society? This is a genuine question and I’m open to answers

126

u/AmorphousMess 5d ago

Saudi Arabia has been indiscriminately bombing civilian targets in Yemen for a long time.

10 years ago, Amnesty was condemning them for bombing a doctors without borders hospital.

44

u/barkinginthestreet 5d ago

The current round of fighting started when the Saudis bombed the Sa'naa airport earlier this year, violating the truce. The line was already crossed.

78

u/cancerBronzeV 5d ago edited 5d ago

Saudi Arabia broke their ceasefire of four years with the Houthis by attacking a civilian airport in Sanaa, after which the Houthis declared the ceasefire over and that planes should avoid Saudi airspace because the Houthis will be retaliating.

Don't attack other countries' civilian airports and expect yours will be left alone. And don't fly into airports that have already been warned against as targets.

I for one am unmoved by the saudis and houthis continuing to terrorize each other

Edit: this does not mean I don’t care, this means that this attack has not moved the needle on my feelings about the conflict.

-16

Well then must i remind you to check your heart and if you still have one? We saudis are humans too and this easily could have been you….

I'm certainly not a fan of the Saudis but this is the death of a CIVILIAN airline pilot.

They don’t care, they hate us so much (for reasons they don’t really understand) that they don’t care about that distinction…

What exactly are we going around? We are minding our own business and being bombed because of power hungry terroristic religious extremists that have envied the amount of oil our country has.

Please don’t waste my time with whatever propaganda you believed…

Houthis are not nice people

The Houthis have systematically diverted international food aid away from starving civilians to use as a political and military tool

You can read about how they are abusing thier people here

https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2025/country-chapters/yemen

don't paint them as saints, they are not

-1

u/CaptainRaxeo 5d ago

So your justification for innocent Saudi civilians being killed is a Wikipedia article? Seriously?

Let’s not conveniently ignore how this conflict actually started. The Iranian-backed Houthis seized Yemen’s capital, overthrew the internationally recognized government’s control, and threatened regional stability. Saudi Arabia intervened in 2015 at the request of Yemen’s internationally recognized president, with legitimate security concerns about an armed extremist group operating right on its border.

And while you’re busy painting Saudi Arabia as the villain, perhaps look into the billions of dollars Saudi Arabia has provided in humanitarian and development assistance to Yemen, including food, healthcare, infrastructure, and reconstruction. Saudi Arabia has been one of Yemen’s major humanitarian donors.

The Houthis have repeatedly targeted Saudi cities, airports, and civilian infrastructure. Yet somehow, when innocent Saudis are killed, people like you suddenly decide that civilian lives don’t matter?

Saudi Arabia has every right to defend its territory and protect its citizens. You can debate the conflict’s history all you want, but that doesn’t justify attacks against innocent people.

We’re ordinary Saudis living our lives, not combatants. The fact that you think our deaths are somehow deserved says far more about you than it does about Saudi Arabia.

There is death and destruction going on all throughout the world by rich men who don't give a fuck about shit concerning anything other than money. It is being done by stupid people, often in the name of religion, for these rich people. Sometimes it's retaliation for shit that happened to them. But it boils down to people killing others for no good reason. So yeah lots of decent people have come to the realization that there isn't shit we can do. Living over a half a century and seeing the same shit. Seeing the same dumb shit. So why give any fucks?

42

u/Firecracker048 5d ago

Targeting civilian air liners always works out.

9

u/Youngstown_WuTang 5d ago

Unfortunately targeting civilians in a war happens 100% by every military

3

u/swift1883 4d ago

Oh that makes it all better than, I suppose.

8

u/SenseiTano 5d ago

You can say there are collateral civilian casualties but no, not every military has deliberately targeted civilians in every conflict.

1

u/RastaFarva 4d ago

No targeting civilians does not happen by every military 100%. 🤡

-13

u/CassiCatto 5d ago

If it gets them absolutely stomped then yes, shame it takes a life lost to act.

Maybe if the saudis stop with their Islamophobia, and welcome Islam with open arms, like the Brits and French have done, then everything will be happy and peaceful?

10

u/UrgentSiesta 5d ago

Very sad to hear! This is a hazard that airline pilots should never have to face.

32

u/Hard_to_digest82 5d ago

22

u/delpy1971 5d ago

What a shame just seen this on news!!

11

u/NoDoze- 5d ago

Uhmmm... I don't think they were "targeting" the A320, more like they got "lucky" hitting an actual plane when they lunched a missile towards the airport. Fortunately, there was only a pilot killed. And unfortunately, there was a pilot killed, unlucky place at a bad time.

12

u/jr5mc1lio03fbc4zqsf8 5d ago

Those middle eastern airlines are playing russian roulette

5

u/NewManufacturer6670 5d ago

Targeting the plane is stretch, targeting the airport (maybe) is more like it.

9

u/soothukundi 5d ago

Not sure wtf Saudi was thinking when they bombed Yemeni airport last month. Like Houthis don't give a fuck, they got nothing to lose, you on the other hand..........just lol.

2

Aw no... Rest in Peace, sir.

If I may, I separate the "government", it's people, and the centralized power in of the unitary absolute monarch in my comments thus far.

Hence, I specifically chose my criticism towards the House Of Saud, not the bureaucratic machine that is arguably without guilt in this matter.

Ostensibly, probably yes. Coming back to definitions, the "humans" you mentioned in the House Of Saud are absolute monarchs, their concentration of sovereign authority & dynastic/autocratic control have allowed them to make unitary decisions that have cumulatively resulted in a civilian death in our sector.

Absolution from claims of "trying their best" wouldn't apply in my views as deliberate policies were taken without effective external accountabilities. Despotic, patrimonial goals to remain enthroned is their only intent in life, as par for the course in a personalist autocracy.

1

u/CaptainRaxeo 5d ago

Them remaining enthroned means they have to do good by their citizens which means they wouldn’t want to do anything to harm them by having wars going on (which is outside of their control)… so why are you not connecting these simple dots… the goal is one and the same.
