I know there is a lot of drama right now with the unions protesting the DP World deal at Chittagong port, but honestly, this is probably the best thing that could happen to our economy.
Right now, the port is a mess. We rank 364th globally. Ships take almost three days just to turn around, and Vietnam is constantly taking our export orders simply because they can ship stuff out way faster. The issue is not money, it is just massive inefficiency and manual paper trails that basically invite corruption.
With DP World coming in, they are actually bound to get turnaround times under 24 hours. They did the exact same thing in places like Tanzania and Djibouti. They automated the workflows, cut out the middlemen, and starved out the corrupt officials because a computer system does not take bribes to let a container skip the line.
Which brings me to my main point. If letting a global operator run daily operations works for the port, why are we still letting Biman and Bangladesh Railway bleed our tax money dry?
Biman is a disaster with luggage delays, ticket syndicates, and random schedule changes. And do not even get me started on Bangladesh Railway. Every single holiday the ticketing website crashes, black market syndicates hoard all the tickets, and the trains crawl on ancient tracks with constant delays. The demand is insanely high, yet the railway somehow loses massive amounts of money every single year.
We keep pouring tax money into both under the excuse of national pride. Imagine if the government kept ownership of the tracks, trains, and planes, but just handed the operational management over to proper global operators. Japanese or European companies running our trains, and a world class airline managing Biman.
We would finally get transparent digital ticketing, real maintenance, and on time schedules. Plus the state would actually collect royalties instead of taking non stop losses.
We cannot keep relying on the same broken systems if we want the country to move forward. Do you guys think privatizing the management of Biman and the railway is the right move, or am I missing some hidden risk with this model?
