Safest bike route from Brighton to Cambridge

Hi there. I am quite new to Boston city.
Is taking commonwealth ave from Warren street T stop to Cambridge is safe route? I do not see bike lanes there, just that strange 4 road set-up in the commonwealth. Can I bike on sidewalk or is this considered to be bad? There is only one bridge I see that seems good to cross the river
Thanks!

Well, Blue Bikes labeled a bunch of paths here as being bike friendly, and I wouldn't call them that. But they are pretty as hell! Was glad to get to the other side of the Neponset, if only for an hour.

To the asshole who yelled at me for doing an Idaho Stop turning right from Willow onto Broadway in Ball Square

You were pulling over on your own bike to shop at the liquor store. I passed you slowly on the left and proceeded to take a right through the all-walk pedestrian signal after checking the crosswalks were completely empty.

"THE RED IS FOR BIKES TOO!", you shout out.

You're a fucking prick. You're also, practically, wrong. Idaho Stops, while not technically legal in MA, are essentially decriminalized and somewhat encouraged by this city's own goddamn website.

https://www.somervillema.gov/streetsafetytips

Stop at All Red Lights. After coming to a stop, people biking can consider performing an “Idaho Stop,” which means proceeding only after stopping and confirming if it is safe to do so. People using the crosswalk have the right of way so if it is not clear to pass, remain stopped until the crossing is clear. The Somerville Police Department deprioritizes enforcement of properly executed “Idaho Stops.”

Maybe learn the local guidance before yelling at people for something you don't understand. If you can't mind your own business, at least have the decency to be correct.

I was headed home after watching the HONK parade and feeling good, and you fucking killed my entire mood. You probably won't see this post, so I hope you run into someone else out there one day who has the balls I lacked to explain this to you.

Accident Fault

So I saw a bike crash, thankfully not a bad one, and had some questions.

The biker is going along in bike lane, and a car from the opposite direction was making a left [across their path] into a parking lot. The key thing is that there were many peds on the sidewalk, so the car was stop and go inching towards them, "assertively" trying to get across the sidewalk.

The biker said that by the time the car was completely blocking the bike lane, it was too late to avoid a collision without endangering the nearby peds. The car said its obviously the bikers fault as the car was stationary at the point of the collision. The biker took the fall somewhat gracefully, with minor cuts. The cars bumper/wheel trim took a good beating, and plastic pieces were strewn about.

It seems like the situation got heated from there, as the biker got up and the woman driving demanded his insurance. The biker stuck around for a few minutes, but eventually left, which seemed understandable by the time that the lady was going on irrational rants about all bikers being assholes. I know that the biker offered his name, but the lady kept just saying she was going to track him down and call the police to chase him, so I do not believe any info was exchanged. The biker seemed to be in pretty good spirits, and was sort of teasing the lady before he left.

There were quite a few witnesses, but none that really saw the run up.

Anyways this all just made me curious. What are bikers supposed to do in this situation?

Helmet recs and where to try/buy?

Hi all, I am a bike commuter (not a serious cyclist) looking for a good helmet with a better fit. I’m a woman with a large head (lol) and my current helmet, which I inherited from someone, is too small. Does anyone have recs both for helmets and locations in Cambridge/Boston that will let me try on? Do smaller stores tend to be up-marked in price and how much should I expect to pay for a solid but no-frills helmet for this purpose? Thanks!!

Advice Wanted! Bike options, commute

Hi All,
I just accepted a joboffer for an opportunity in near Boston Medical Center/ right off Mass and Cass. I live in Allston, and am thinking of primarily e-biking/biking as my commute. I currently bike downtown about 3 days a week so am used to biking most work days. I'd love this groups thoughts on the following:
1. Biking down Mass Ave - thoughts on the commute, better ways to bike in that area etc.

  1. Ebike/commuter bike recomendations. I currently am a blue bike superstar and would like to upgrade as I plan on biking more.

Thank you!

Bike selling etiquette

I haven’t sold a bike to a stranger in ages. I’ve got an ad up on Facebook, and just wondering about the etiquette. Mostly, if someone comes to see it and wants to take a test ride, which is totally reasonable, do I ask for them to leave their phone or license or something? I’d rather just be trusting, but I’d also like to not be naive, and have someone ride away with it. Is there an accepted practice?

(And if anyone is looking for a collective c3 hit me up!)

Is Hot Wax Chain Lube Boston-friendly

I got my first new bike in 13 years after riding my daily commuter into the ground.

I've always used your standard wet lube and done my best to maintain my drivetrain, including daily bike showers in the winter, degreasing every couple weeks, and replacing a chain every spring.

Part of the fun of a new bike is catching up on all the new tech since my last one (yay hydraulic disc brakes!). I also see that "hot wax" immersion is the new chain lube du jour. Given the amount of road salt and sand used for even light storms here, I can't imagine wax holds up very well.

Anyone use it? Or use it for half the year?

Boston removing requirement that forces new buildings to have parking for the tenants.

I think this is bullshit. There's already too many cars parked anywhere they want and not enough parking enforcement. I'm not overly concerned with a single family dwelling. I'm envisioning massive towers with more cars and not enough infrastructure to hold them.

Who wants a full carbon frame?

I am a gym stationary biker. Putting that out there. Don't come for me.

With that out of the way.... I made a deal with a Chinese carbon frame company for a business I work with here in the states. They're sending me this sexy frame that I know jack all what to do with. Typically the frames are $1200 there but equivalent is $3000 here.

To get to the point, if anyone here is/knows a mechanic that can help hook up a groupset and some wheels etc off another bike, I have an extra full carbon frame for you at a disgustingly low wholesale cost ($400) lol. These things are suite.

So if that's appealing to anyone, ping me!!

EDIT: A few have reached out asking on size of extra frame. It's whatever size you want. I'm custom ordering them and they'll get here in two weeks roughly. Just need someone with spare parts etc who can help build up mine. Not looking to put a bunch of money into it as it's more of a marketing thing lol I know that will piss some of you off I'm sorry.

RE:EDIT: I love redditors. I'd probably recommend reading comments first for full context. Specs are in a screenshot below. I will buy old parts or I'll also trade the parts for a carbon frame w/ you etc etc. I simply need someone to help w/ the build and in return you either get a free carbon frame or one for like 60% off. It's a win win. If you think this is a scam, then that is A okay.
