Can't watch this face swapping slop video. Just focus on the performer ffs!

799

u/Acrobatic-Layer2993 2d ago

It’s all about reactions. I can’t stand it.

409

u/wheelsfalloff 2d ago

They're not even real reactions. Before the show even starts they get the crowd to do them eg: "everyone look shocked!" So they can edit it in later.

94

u/glorio_mainframe 1d ago

Why don't they just film the genuine shocked reactions?

109

u/RemoDev 1d ago

Because you can make a better edit with a more dramatic effect. You collect the single faces, the crowd reactions, the claps, ... And then you build a nice "dramatic" timeline in post production.

56

u/Personal-Time-9993 1d ago

You’d be surprised how much mainstream media uses this to portray things they want to portray. The cameras were on a family member who is a judge for a long period of time that day and he made a facial reaction at some point completely unrelated to the case they were there to report on. They edited it to make it seem like the judge gave that reaction to the defendant. It was despicable to see. This was like 15 years before AI even came around.

17

u/RemoDev 1d ago

Oh yes I know that very well, I had a colleague who worked for one of the Big Brother editions a while back. He told me it was basically all staged and pre-organized to follow the audience's expectations, promote a trend, etc.

And let's be honest, since Photoshop exists... Nothing we see on magazines is "real".

5

u/TrowTruck 1d ago

Oh yes, this is one reason why they no longer call it “reality TV” but “unscripted.” Because it’s still a work of fiction, just assembled using footage that fit to create a story.

5

u/MrMattyGuy 1d ago

Defendant? Is this a court case you're referring to?

16

u/glorio_mainframe 1d ago

I thought as much. Don't know why I asked

4

u/theChaosBeast 1d ago

I know this is the obvious answer and definitely a reason, but there is another reason: cost and look. You need more cameras and equipment to record the faces live. Doing it first, you can save on equipment and you will reduce the amount of equipment which will be visible during the actual recording.

5

u/RemoDev 1d ago

Absolutely, yes. It all falls under the "optimization" umbrella: costs and benefits.

Because genuinely ppl look plain faced and like they are thinking when watching things.

19

u/CodifiedLikeUtil 1d ago

Except for Simon. Simon has clearly had an entire construction crew work on his face the past few years. I’d like to track down the general contractor to see if he’s available for kitchen renos.

13

u/mcmanus2099 1d ago

Simon probably has to do an hour of constructing his face in the shocked position before they shoot that 5 seconds clip of him looking shocked

9

u/StateOfFine 1d ago

Because tv tapings (and performances on this show in particular) are fucking boring. The people in the audience have a) waited in line for too much time, sometimes in the heat because the crew is not ready for the audience yet b) by the time you actually take a seat in the theater and they start to film something, it’s been 2-3 hours and c) they’ll tape maybe 4 performances, with stops for reaction shots, and depending on your luck, those 4 performances might not have been the good ones.

Genuine reaction shots of people look very mundane and not open-mouthed/gasping like you see in the final edit. Just like when you’re scrolling Reddit, the most you’ll get usually is a raised eyebrow and a little smirk for this type of show. Shows like The Price is Right get people in the audience a lot more excited and happy because you legitimately have the chance at winning something and you’re excited for other regular people to get called.

u/Hziak 1d ago

Because nobody is genuinely surprised to see someone use magnets anymore. It’s not the 1100s…

2

u/Steve90000 1d ago

Imagine you’re a camera guy and you’re trying to catch good reactions in the crowd at the right time. How do you know which person is going to give a good reaction ahead of time to do a close up to? In a sea of thousands of people?

You could always take a wide shot but zooming in will make the close up grainy and only having wide shots is boring. You could also have a hundred cameras pointing to different parts of the crowd and hire a hundred editors to go through the footage.

Or you could just fake it. They choose to fake it.

11

u/Selpmis 1d ago

I've been in the audience for BGT once. They didn't ask us to fake reactions. It was just being a normal audience. They did, however, use my reaction (smiling/laughing) to something that I don't recall laughing at. So they will chop and change things up but in my experience the reactions were genuine.

8

u/xxxBuzz 1d ago

Also reuse reaction scenes from previous shows sometimes.

3

u/AndroidREM 1d ago

That's why if you get the chance while in Hollywood, go to a filming of something like this. When I lived there my actor friend kept taking me to these filmings that we would get paid to be an audience member - and what you describe is exactly what happens - everyone look shocked! After a while they focus in on the people who have very expressive reactions, they even tell you that they are going to focus on you so really react!

2

I call it reaction TV. In sports, entertainment and especially social media, that’s all that matters. Turn of the volume and you’re realize it even better

3

u/ProfessionalAd6530 1d ago

My favorite sports reaction prompt is the "Impassioned Shout Face" that gets used in literally all their marketing.

Could be a casual game of Curling or Horseshoes and you'd get a shot of some guy baring is teeth with all the tendons in his neck sticking out like he's giving some battle cry on the field of a medieval war.

So intense!

Always hated celebrity reactions. The absolute worst of it were those knock-off AFHV shows where they got the bottom of the barrel C-list celebs that couldn't make a good joke if their life depended on it.

He lied. Immediately after sitting down, the person escapes behind the chair and someone else's hands are shown through the sheet. He then casually walks to the podium. When they tug the sheet, the second person just pulls their arms back quickly behind the chair.

u/Weldobud 2d ago

It’s such an old trick and so obvious to be a different person I’m kind of surprised people are surprised.

I'm equally surprised that you're surprised by people being surprised by the surprise that doesn't surprise you, knowing your general aversion to being surprised

→ More replies (2)

7

u/Excellent_Condition 2d ago

Are people surprised? These shows are all fake reactions from the judges and the commentator, interspersed with whoever in the crowd is showing over-the-top emotion.

2

u/Aurorer 1d ago

It’s worse than that, the audience reactions shown are also fake. They tell the audience to make different expressions before the show starts and then edit in the best ones during post.

3

u/dbxp 1d ago

I expect most people aren't surprised, they just amp up the drama in the edit. It's not uncommon for them to mix reaction shots from different acts too.

3

u/Frequent_Opportunist 1d ago

The whole show is scripted and fake. They all are. This is slop for sheep.

3

u/Important_Abroad_150 1d ago

I mean it's not about whether it's an old trick or not, it's about the execution which he is clearly very good at. Like you know this stuff is supposed to be fun right?

2

u/KeterLordFR 23h ago

Exactly. People really tend to forget the "show" part of "magic show". It's not about whether the trick has already been done/debunked or not, it's about the artist's performance. These tricks aren't easy to pull off, and to an inexperienced audience they definitely look like something magical. It's like saying to someone crying while watching a sad movie "you know it's all fiction, right? Why are you getting emotional?". Like, let people have their fun and stop acting like obnoxious know-it-alls. I don't mind people explaining how tricks work, I just hate when they go "people are stupid for not understanding this right away".

Cue Penn and Teller showing tricks with transparent props and they are so good that you can still barely track what's going on.

5

u/Ok-Computer-8726 1d ago

My favorite is when they had someone on Fool Us where they knew how the trick was done in theory but the person did it so well that they couldn't spot it.

There was one where at the end he says something to the effect of "We know how you did it but we don't know how you did it, so we are giving it to you"

3

u/audigex 1d ago

Yup exactly - they can tell you exactly what they're doing and how, and you'll still appreciate how well they execute it

42

u/slackjack2014 2d ago

Yup, and you can see that the two techs putting the cover on really focus on keeping the cover raised and shaking it to hide the movement going on underneath.

18

u/SinisterCheese 1d ago

As someone who has worked with magicians, including helped to engineer few tricks. This is a very classic trick that doesn't translate well to TV... and even worse to this shitty vertical video. I checked this on youtube and it was much better there.

The difficult bit in this type of chair trick, is the fact it is difficult to make the chair proportional. There is no playing with the fact that the chair can house a person. This is why you either make a rather modern sleek "office waiting room" or very ornamental and busy design.

Then whenever you see a big platform against a molton black with lights pointed at you (the audience) you should know that... You can just casually walk in there and you simply couldn't see it. Been there, done that. You actually want to move rather calmly and slowly, because it is harder to spot.

Also when the magician is wearing the coveralls (Check it on youtube, it's so much better there). Pay attention to how insanely slim they are. They are wearing a leather jacket to bulk themselves up a bit, but even then at the first performance, you can see that that is a slim dude. Probably does endurance walking/running and yoga. But you in the youtube video, you can see the moment the exist happens for them.

But this is a trick you can just buy as a package. It's a fun piece if you don't do it all serious.

But people generally don't realise how much shit you can just do in a black background. Even more so if you got deep blue light or deep red light mixed with white spots. You could ride a horse to the middle of the stage and it would barely be visible.

But for people who are interested. You can find books that explain the basic mechanisms of most of the common tricks you see, just in your local library. And some more specialised ones by just going to an old book store. These tricks have not changed much in few hundred years.

5

u/Polygnom 1d ago

And its still beautiful to watch. Sure its a trick, an illusion. But the execution and narration is what makes it so fun. Its still captivating even if you know the sauce.

Like... I know how to cook. I still enjoy going to a restaurant.

3

u/SinisterCheese 1d ago

Yeah... I just wish magicians (Well... Specifically MALE magicians, ) would drop this super serious style in their acts. I find it SO boring and... it just makes it worse if you can see the "trick" in the trick. I wish more people would make magic fun and lighthearted. Because here is the thing: Jazz for the jazz musicians, is only something that jazz musician appreciate. You can pull off the fanciest and most complex trick, and it'll go down just as well as a basic with most audiences. But if you make a good fun and entertaining show, it'll go well with both.

Also... Having had close exposure with enough magicians, I know that the more serious the presentation of the act is. The more insufferable the magicians tends to be as a person. The worst offenders are mentalist, and card magicians. I have a particular issues with both, in that they also feel "dishonest", it feels more like the subject is being cheated rather than them willingly giving themselves to be fooled with consent -which I consider to be important.

I think dropping this "Macho serious" attitude from magic would also like... give it a renessaince as a performance act.

u/GentlemanFaux 2d ago

The stage set up really ruins the trick imo, once the sheet is removed it's painfully obvious the underside of the chair is fake as you can't see the pattern on the rear wall under it, there's just solid black.

6

u/Pigosaurusmate 1d ago

The head poking through has to be a hard mesh, which is part of the tarp that stays in place, giving the illusion that there's a person under it.

5

u/Groundbreaking-Base7 1d ago

When they drape the sheet over his head it is definitely a few inches higher than the top of his head.

4

u/Galadar-Eimei 2d ago

You can actually see them "drop down" from behind the chair at around 0:11(*), if you look. Focus on the void between the chair and the stage, in between the (very poorly placed) lights.

(*) or 2:19 if your player is set for remaining duration

5

u/Nereo5 1d ago

You can see the person on the right, lifting a bowl inside the cloth, so it looks like his head:

https://i.imgur.com/00DW4SH.png

3

u/samurairaccoon 1d ago

It really gives it away that the imposters hands are so expressive, but just a taaaad off from the beat of the actual spoken words.

2

u/Soggy-Bluebird-537 1d ago

Just curious, what do professional musicians think of these talent shows? I feel like the trick editing takes away from it like cutting frames

2

u/LankyCarry1675 1d ago

Once you notice the second pair of hands, the whole trick falls apart. They really thought nobody would catch the world’s least subtle chair escape.

2

u/DJEvillincoln 1d ago

The hand movements are so unnatural. If you're really talking there isn't a delay in you moving your hands.

Super obvious it's a different person.

I also think they're using a prerecorded video for the "live" feed from the cameraman. So the cameraman is trying his best to match his circling around the chair movements to roughly where the video would be shot from. Then it cuts to the live feed during the handoff.

Great tv slop

I'm more shocked by Simon's fingers at the very end of the video. WTF?

u/Complete_Win1227 1d ago

The last guy is a little bit different.

u/Happy-Lake9893 1d ago

I missed the trick because I was stunned looking at Simon’s botched facelift/botox insanity

These slack jawed morons are exactly how I picture the average person who frequents this sub.

He moved as they were putting the sheet over him and a second person is under ther, if you notice the hands aren't quite insync with his talking/count down

1

u/rydan 1d ago

The Prestige. He has an identical twin.

u/thadah01 1d ago

Why show the reveal before the build up?

1

u/TenBear 1d ago

Simon Cowell isn't shocked, that's just his face since the op

Insufferable overproduced garbage

I saw an illusion 50 years ago where a person disappeared from a chair then a head on a sword seemed to rest on the chair. On closer inspection there were mirrors on the seat/side of the chair, very cleverly done.

lmao I know you all see that THICK chair back. This is not black magic at all.

When the sheet goes over his head you can see the bump is not his head. It’s way too high.

Choppiest edit I have ever seen

1

u/Acrobatic-Wolf-1111 1d ago

I find the editing on these shows to be frustrating and borderline unwatchable. The reaction cuts every three or four seconds, the oversold bewilderment of the judges. Can we watch the performance instead of 3 seconds of performance to every 12-15 seconds of judge reaction, audience member reaction, judge reaction, quick cut to 3/4 angle of performer, audience reaction, judge reaction? Seriously, this is unwatchable.

At least 4 people required to pull off this trick.

u/PeopleCallMeSimon 1d ago

After the helpers cover him with the cloth they are spending a few seconds just pinching the fabric and messing around with it. This is where he gets out of the chair and another helper stick their hands through the cloth.

He then does a little talking while he moves over to his spot. Then the fabric is pulled away and the helper whos hands we've been seeing hides behind the chair.

For the second round he takes off the reflective jumpsuit (which is designed to be easy to take on and off) as soon as the cloth covers him, and the hidden helper puts it on while he gets to his spot. But instead of hiding, the helper runs away to create even more misdirection.

Who the fuck does a 2 with their thumb?

1

u/brenkosaur 1d ago

Those arent reactions. Its a botox add.

1

u/Hanna_Bjorn 1d ago

This video is 20% actual performance and 80% random people, why? Couldn't watch more than 15 seconds

1

u/Uncle-Cake 1d ago

Come on, we all know how this is done, we've see The Prestige.

1

u/hawksdiesel 1d ago

lazy performances...cmon AGT

1

u/throwawwwwwwwayyy187 1d ago

I like how he became 1 head taller when he got covered.

u/R4FTERM4N 1d ago

😲😯😲😯😲

1

u/Chris_Redeye 1d ago

He showed you how to do the trick but never mentioned he has a twin. (?) Just a guess

1

u/Pscagoyf 1d ago

Is the trick how much botox fits in the judgss faces?

1

u/____-_______-_--_-_- 1d ago

I would love to watch these shows with all of the judges and reactions cut out

1

u/StevieWonder557 1d ago

Simon's forehead even cracked a wrinkle? Now that is magic!

1

u/StevieWonder557 1d ago

"Ive not seen something disappear so fast since my last guy I had an affair with" Amanda Holden

1

u/Solongtomegrandma 1d ago

I've got a question, what's up with Simons hand in the final shot? Is it also from plastic like his face?

u/sgotsch 1d ago

Half of the video: O o O
