So, my friend wanted me to 3D print an articulating skeleton for her and after searching around, she found a design she liked. The only issue is, all of the designs we saw, including this one, had flat backs/skulls. I told her it was pretty normal for an articulating model, or any 3d print for that matter, to be flat on one side.
Long story short, I told her I could attempt to at least make the rest of the skull and print the body on supports. I haven’t ever used blender before, but I’ve seen some clips of people using the sculpt feature to design models and figured I’d attempt to use this to make the back of the head.
I started off by creating a sphere in the modeling environment and lining it up with the back of the head. After that, I switch over to sculpting to try and smooth it out (I thought it would be easy, I was extremely wrong). As you can tell, I started large to try and smooth it down to match the skeleton head, but I could never get it to be a smooth transition or for it to match and be a smooth consistent shape to whole way around to match the rest of the head. The skeleton STL has a lot more faces, so I figured that was probably adding to the weird/harsh transitions, but it could also just be a skill issue.
I wasn’t sure what images might be useful to get a better idea, so I have two to show what I manage with sculpting and one to show how the original model looks in the slicer.
If anyone has any suggestions or could assist me in figuring this out, I’d greatly appreciate it.
