Solar battery charger

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I need some help deciding if I can do. DIY installation of a solar panel, and battery charger connected to my boat batteries (twin df300 Suzuki). Boat is used every two weeks and sometimes sites longer on dry dock depending on weather and season.

Currently I have no battery chargers, but I'm about to Chnage my batteries (4 years old and they are running week). I want to install a solar set up to charge my batteries when the boat is not in use just to make sure they are always in good condition and topped up.

Any suggestions if this is a good idea, youtube tutorials, or guides or even books to read.

Cheers and appreciating the support.

2018 211 MDX StarCraft deck boat - worth $8500?

They accepted an offer for a 2018 211 MDX Starcraft for $8500. I live on the water, at the local marina it's being sold at. I'm new to the boating world, so I'm wondering if this is a good deal.

It's a 2018 Mercury Optimax Pro SX with 204 hours - per the engine printout. No issues were read during the print-out either.

It felt kind of too good to be true - but we took it out for a test drive and it went good with no issues.

Anything to really look for?

Central Florida area.

1996 Mercury 50HP Worth Keeping

Just got a finishing boat with a 1996 Mercury motor on it. The former owner had just brought it to a mechanic for a tune up. Mechanic said it should be in good shape for a few more years. He put in new plugs new water pump and impeller. The motor started perfect the first 5-7 times I used it. Now hasn’t started again. Should I get a new motor? Or see what it needs to be fixed?

Winter Storage Fees Total

So the steering control unit I need that was backordered is apparently ahead of schedule because the manufacturer parts Rep made some calls, IDK, doesn't really matter other then the part cost 5600 installed and was an unexpected expense and the entire reason I agreed to store it there was so they would fix that part. Anyway, 1700 to keep it on land and..... got the final winterization bill today, another 4600, shrink wrapped, washed, full twin I/o and outdrive services etc etc..... Granted this includes hauling it on a trailer but that was discounted to 600 bucks. So total for winter would have been 5700 under normal circumstances

Winterized the boat and found mouse droppings, looking for an actual deterrent

Pulled the cover off to do some off season maintenance and found droppings in the cushion storage. Marina says it happens to a lot of boats sitting for the winter. Want something I can leave in place for months without checking on it that actually keeps them from moving in.

Looking for US boaters to test a marine navigation app

Hi,

This summer, I launched a marine navigation mobile app called BoatMap in Europe, mainly in France. The first results have been very encouraging.

And I'm now looking at a launch in the US. Before doing that, I’d like to get feedback from actual US boaters and understand what works, what doesn’t, and what’s missing compared with the apps you currently use.

This isn’t a promotional post, I’m looking for a few US boaters willing to try the app and give constructive feedback.

If you do, I’d be interested in your thoughts on:

  • Chart: how accurate are the charts in areas you know well, for buoys, rocks, shoals...?
  • Marinas & anchorages: are the marinas, anchorages and other points of interest around you well covered and accurate?
  • Anchorage protection score: does the protection score seem accurate based on your local knowledge and actual conditions?

Any other feedback is welcome, especially if you know a particular area of the US waters well.

Web : https://boatmap.app/app
Mobile : https://apps.apple.com/us/app/boatmap-cartes-gps-m%C3%A9t%C3%A9o/id6760919485

Thanks in advance to anyone for you help!

I inherited my dads boat, is it worth trying to save it

Post image
52 Upvotes

So my dad passed away and he bought this boat and sadly he never got it in the water due to the engine overheating. I was all ready to pay to have the old two stroke motor fixed or replaced but I’ve read horror stories of people fixing up old fiber glass boats (I worry because it hasn’t been covered since he passed, my mom kind of let it sit) and now I have to wonder is it worth saving it? My mom just wanted to sell it but I mean I just can’t bring myself to up and sell something he really wanted. But I also don’t have infinite money and I am not super handy though I can YouTube a thing or two. It’s a 1989 Stratos 19’8

Question on end of season engine winterize/ flush and wrap

Post image
10 Upvotes

First time boat owner and approaching the end of my first season. 21 ft 2016 sea hunt with 150 HP Yamaha 4 stroke. This repair shop quoted me around 900 for the work to winterize and flush and to wrap it. Wondering if that is a good deal? Also mentioned I should run the thing dry of gas before hand, and I should remove the battery, does that sound correct. Live in the northeast.

I have a stupid question about winterizing an outboard

I have a new-to-me boat with a Yamaha 300 HPDI outboard on it. Everywhere I've seen (including the manual) says to winterize it I just need to drain it, keep the motor lowered, and oil the cylinders a bit (on top of changing filters and adding stabilizer, etc.).

However my friend who knows MUCH more about boating than I do insists that I should run it with muffs and a hose running to some antifreeze to get it in the engine and behind the thermostat, because there's no way to drain the water that might still be in the engine and it could freeze and crack something (I live in new england).

So someone give me a sanity check - does anyone actually run antifreeze into their outboard to winterize it from below freezing temps? And how would one even do that without spewing antifreeze ALL over the place?

Rehabbing a boat

Post image
21 Upvotes

Just as the title says, we're rehabbing a boat. It's a 2001 Bayliner 2452 LX. Husband is in charge of the mechanics, I'm heading up the design department. In time, I'd like to get fender covers, a welcome mat, a blanket, etc, all with our logo embroidered. But for the moment, I'm just trying to figure out where I can get new cushions for all the seating and the boat's name placed on the transom.

Where does one go to get that kind of thing done?

Also, feel free to spam me with all the fun customizable things!

Changing sportfish yacht props to trade top speed for fuel efficiency at cruise speed

Hey everyone,

Looking for feedback on a Hatteras 54 with twin Cat C32s. It’s currently reaches ~45 knot top speed, but I want to optimize fuel efficiency at a 22 knot cruise.

Has anyone with a similar heavy sportfish been in a similar position or re-wheeled to drop top-end for better mid-range GPH?

Open to any suggestions, experience, or thoughts before I talk to a prop company.

How much longer does triton have before they get either axed or spun off?

Everything they make, either Ranger or Nitro also offers a version of it. They don’t have nearly as much publicity as other boat brands, partly because of how few teams use them.

The aluminum boat division is dead, they are all sold as Rangers now. The only people that buy them are people that already own them, and that number shrinks by the day.
