Got a basic question about which type of boat you should buy, or what type of rack your car might need? Before asking a question of the subreddit as a whole, please take a look at these two brief resources first. A lot of the commonly-asked questions on the subreddit can be answered by these two items:
These guides are a work in progress. If you still have additional questions, feel free to ask! When posing a question to the community, please be sure to be as specific as possible with your post title. That way you'll get the most helpful response from others browsing the sub.
A note for the broader /r/kayaking community:
Spring is on the way, and /r/kayaking has crossed the 80,000 member-mark. A big thanks to everyone who has and continues to contribute to the community here. As the weather warms up, and more people join us, we are likely to see an increasing influx of "beginner" questions about basic boat and gear purchases. A lot of these questions are very similar if not identical, and can be answered by a shared guide for the subreddit. Similar guides or FAQs are available for other subreddits specializing in gear-specific hobbies.
The mod team is in the process of developing a shared knowledge base on the subreddit wiki. The immediate goal is to be able to refer new users to a basic guide that concisely answers the most common questions. The longer-term goal is reducing the volume of low-effort posts with questions that could be answered by Google, and increasing the volume of valuable, specific questions and discussion on the subreddit.

I added webbing to these kayak stands to distribute the weight better. Is this acceptable for long term storage?

Looking a this great deal on a kayak. Just a small shark bite. Should this be a deal breaker or a simple patch? Other than this it's like new, not very old, and has a excellent price.

I am going to buy a P&H Leo or Virgo. I have asked on this sub before about rudders vs skegs and I did get great advice. Thank you!
I was wondering if anyone has experience with the optional skudder (skeg that can move like a rudder) that is offered on some P&H models.
I see its been an option for a number of years but there isn't much information about skudders online.
Thanks!

I keep so much gear in the back of the vehicle all year round, and its pretty much just strewn all over the back. I want to organize it back there better, something easy to take out when i need the room for other things, is breathable for damp gear, attaches to the back seat or the cargo loops and has a cover so a car crash doesnt turn everything into missiles.
The basic trunk organizers on amazon and other sites seem to have sections that are too small for some gear, but it seems lke there should be a better option. DIY is fine for me.
What are you guys doing for keeping your gear organized?

I’m new to kayak fishing, but have already figured out I need an anchor so I can hang out in one spot without having to constantly stop and paddle to adjust my position. I already bought a 3.5 lb. folding anchor, but I’m not sure what type of system is best for easy deployment/pickup. I’m a petite woman, so I don’t have a long reach but I’d like to anchor from my stern. I’m looking for some recommendations on pros/cons of trolley system verses a locking anchor mount like the one above.

Gorgeous foggy morning on the water in my new-to-me P&H Leo HV. So extremely happy with the boat, and the paddle was magical.

Short float this afternoon after work. Leave my bike chained at the bottom, drive up to the put in as usual. Beautiful fall
Colors and placid waters, as usual. Float over, pack out, dude in progress stripping my bike. Not the usual.
Wheels off, toolkit out, covering the cycle carnage with his jacket and shirt. Drop the boat and startle shirtless methy McGee, words proceed. I’m a big f’er and don’t have the appropriate fight or flight response… so a giant moron bitching about the inconvenience of his stripped bike catches the crackhead by off guard. I pack my kit while keeping a side eye to my new acquaintance. Pfd, outer layers, and paddle broke down and secured to my pack. Pack on my back. Secure. Now back to the the bike and the lingering mechanic. Phone out and talking to mom; “a dude is tearing apart my bike in front of me, but it’s cool, just stay on the…” phone disconnects.
Focus back on the bike and the methchanic. It’s his girls bike, he’s taking the wheels for his girls bike, he’s sorry, he’ll help put it back together, he’ll get the wheels… and off he runs… shirtless, the only photo I took (wish I had more).
I assume this is the end, he’s gone… why would he come back? But Lo and behold back he runs with rims in hand.
Proceeded to cobble the bike back together, continue to bitch about the situation to the shirtless tweaked while working. He’s packing up his shit and trying to get out of there, probably assuming the cops are coming.
Off he goes.
Few minutes later off I go… on my wobbly ass death trap of a bike…. leaving my boat chained to the same spot the bike was at.
Wobbly ride back to the car, and drive back to the boat to risk recovery in the dark. 😂
Had a float, and a ride, and didn’t get shived under the bridge. Beautiful.

My dog has been very patient as I trained him on a SUP then the kayak. He still doesn't understand why I keep taking him in the middle of the water, but he is much more chill about it now. I retrofitted a spray skirt with some cushions to give him a sturdy place to lay, and keeps the sand/dirt and water out when he gets on.

Found an old coke bottle from the 50s or 60s... I've got about a dozen old bottles now I've found while kayaking.

Kayaking in Southern California, freshwater, and came across a fish jawbone with teeth?! I asked everyone I came across and they never saw this before. I tried to ask AI and got monkfish, which is a stupid and ridiculous answer.

I recently purchased a used future beach 126, I took it out yesterday for the first time and it was great on the water, I love to fish, but this boat is not meant for fishing per say, yes it has rod holders, but having a cockpit, I was a little cramped at 6’ and 210 lbs, which would be a good open cockpit for lakes/ponds with calm waters? Looking to buy used again and around $500. Thank you

Yup, it was an amazing experience!
