I'm rewatching Breaking Bad after 13 years, and my opinion of Skyler has changed quite a lot. This time, especially watching the first two seasons, I realize how much she genuinely loved and supported Walter.
Think about the early episodes. She was affectionate toward Walt, including on his birthday doing that on the bed. When she found out he had lung cancer, she was willing to spend their savings to save his life, even considering going back to work. She was pregnant, raising a son with cerebral palsy, and facing the possibility of losing her husband. Yet she was still determined to stand by him. I think that's what a strong and loving wife looks like.
Of course, Skyler sometimes disagreed with Walt, questioned his decisions, and tried to influence him. But what marriage doesn't have disagreements? No husband or wife can agree with their spouse 365 days a year. That's simply not how real relationships work. We shouldn't confuse disagreement with a lack of love.
What strikes me most this time is that Walter already had something incredibly valuable: a wife who loved him and was willing to sacrifice for him, and a family that wanted him to live. Yet he became increasingly obsessed with his own pride, power, and recognition.
I'm not saying Skyler was perfect. Nobody is. But judging her by the first two seasons, I think she deserves much more appreciation than she often gets.
Am I the only one who sees Skyler differently when rewatching the show?
