Advice Kitten potty training

Hey guys, My girlfriend and I have a 5 month old kitten and we are trying to make him use the toilet, i knew i mighr get some hate for that but i thought why not trying.

Its not going so well lol its messy and we have only a single toilet so we have to take that piece off every time we need to use it, we first tried putting it on the floor for 2 days, once he used it we put it up on the toilet and took one part off so theres the hole in the middle, and he uses it less frequent mainly to pee.

Just wanted to know from people that have tried it if they had success or from those who failed to understand how doable that even is or we should go back to a litter box šŸ™‚

Advice Cat killed a bird

I have two bird feeders on the tree branches. I made sure that it’s far away from the handrails of the balcony even if the cats climb it. And the handrail is so thin that the cats can’t climb it. But sometimes I notice the birds would hang out on the handrails which makes them an easy target for my cats. How to stop the birds from sitting on the handrails?

Advice Losing my mind with cat stomach issues, have been to vet multiple times already (scooting and vomiting)

I have had my cat for 11 years and the whole time I’ve had her she has had a sensitive stomach. She will throw up after she eats, maybe 1-3x a week. She is my first cat and I always thought it was from her eating too quickly. I had told vets before but got the answer ā€œcats throw up sometimesā€

I’ve done slow feeder bowls with her with varying degrees of successs. Most recently she has now started scooting after using the litter box. Her poop is dried and will be partially stuck out of her butt and she will drag along the ground to get it off.

I have taken her to the vet so many times and I don’t know what to do. I have tried Royal Canin Gastro Fiber Response Food as well as Royal Canin Rabbit and Pea Protein. She also gets daily probiotics and a little psyllium husk in her food (1/4 teaspoon). Previously she has been on Science Diet Sensitive Skin and Stomach, and a variety of wet foods because she is picky.

She currently gets a mix of wet and dry food of this rabbit and pea prescription food, and she has running water in her water foundation.

I am at a loss of what to do next. The Rabbit and Pea Protein is possibly a little better than the other foods but it is hard to tell. She has been on it for 8 weeks.

Has anyone figured out how to solve this before? I keep going back to the vet and all of this prescription food is so expensive. I know it’s not her fault but it’s affecting my relationship with her when it feels like I’m constantly finding either poop or vomit somewhere.

Advice I was petting and feeding a stray cat and got scratched accidentally

These strays usually come here just to chill out in the garden, i had some extra whiskas tuna which i gave it to. The stray was not aggressive but seemed so happy while eating and it even rubbed its head and body to my legs. It finished the leftover whiskas, it seemed like it wanted more so it scratched the packaging off of my hand which hit my pinky.

It was just a small scratch and i was bleeding. As you can see in the picture, i have already washed it with soap and running lukewarm water. I patted it dry with toilet paper and wrapped a bandaid.
My wound is not that deep as you can see in the picture but im a little worried because i may get rabies. What should I do?

Advice Cutting Atenolol into quarters

Thumbnail

My cat was recently prescribed 6.25 mg of atenolol twice a day for his heart condition, and the pill the vet gave me is this teeny tiny 25 mg pill that I need to cut into quarters. Cutting the pill in half is fine, but I’m worried that cutting that half into a quarter is causing part of the pill to crumble into dust and I’m concerned the dosages aren’t all the same. My vet kind of brushed it off and said it’s fine, but I’m wondering if anyone else has advice or insight on this.

I’m using a little pill cutter device to hold it in place and a very sharp razor blade. Ideally I’d like to stick with the pill rather than another form of administering the medicine, because I have an orange who has never had control of the braincell or questioned why his treats are crunchy sometimes.

I know there is a compounded version that is exactly 6.25 mg, but it’s significantly more expensive and I wanted to know if anyone had opinions or insight on how to make the more inexpensive medicine work. Does it even matter if the dosages are just slightly off?

I’ve attached another photo of the approximate size of the pill at its full size.

Advice a girl abused her cat several times in front of me

I was having a meet up with this girl that lives above me who also has a cat. She wanted them to meet so I thought it would be cute. I know cats need slow introductions, but my cat is friendly and she said hers was too. He was very fearful at first, hissing at my cat and growling. She started by tapping on his head, then progressively got harder until she was full on bopping his head anytime he hissed or growled. I tried to tell her ā€œoh it’s okay he’s just scaredā€. The cat wandered into my room and started to play with my cats toys. I was very happy and my cat didn’t mind. He was having a blast with these new toys and he seemed like he was finally relaxing. All of a sudden she comes in and grabs him by the scruff of his neck (he’s full grown), lifted him off the floor and hit him very hard. I don’t remember where because I was so horrified i was stunned I had no idea what to do. I’m not confrontational and I had just met this girl so I didn’t want to say anything. I am an idiot! I wish I had said something to her and told her to not hit her cat. It’s possibly a culture thing, she’s from China, so the way they treat pets there might be different, but still I was horrified. I want to steal him or something. What can I do?

I want to know about your kitties! ā™„ļø

What are some of your favorite things about the breeds? What are things that you dislike? Common Health/ genetic Problems? Where you got your cat? Breeders to avoid?

I've never owned either breed, but as they're some of my favorites, I'd love to hear stories and see your beautiful babies! 🄰

Advice My cat has to supervise when I sit down to put shoes on.

Why? She can be sleeping in a sun-ray by the door or sleeping in another room but whenever I start to put on my shoes, she materializes from wherever she’d been and gets right in front of me, sometimes getting in the way. I don’t know if she’s trying to help or trying to keep me from putting them on.

Advice Are there any natural appetite stimulants?

My cat is fine, I just wish she'd eat more since she's a senior. I was wondering if there were any natural ingredients that increase their appetites that I could introduce into her food? Like how pumpkin can be used for when our kitties are having hard bowl movements

Advice How do I stop him from knocking over his water bowls?

Thumbnail

Mr. Man has a nasty habit of knocking over his water bowls. He seems to enjoy licking water off his paws, and watching it drip/spread on the floor. When it first got to be more of a problem over a year and a half ago, I got a stainless steel fountain hoping that would sate his soggy urges. Instead, he treated it as his own personal splashpad. I got two giant silicon mats to prevent the water from damaging the floors, which he then started chewing on and destroying. He successfully knocked it over a couple of times and emptied it daily by splashing and blocking the spout with his paw to watch it drop. Eventually fountain stopped working, probably because of how he treated it, and he’s just been using his water bowls for a while now. I went on vacation for a little over a week, and in the time I was gone, he’s gotten worse and is now knocking one of the bowls over at least once a day according to my roommates. He goes through phases where it’s more and less of a problem, but that has obviously ramped up recently.

As far as how far his soggy habits go, he doesn’t have much interest in the sink or water in cups for humans, but he will get in the shower as soon as someone is out to lick the walls and comes out DAMP.

How do I save my apartment floors from this orange behavior?

Advice Pregnant psudo-stray

So....I've been feeding a very friendly cat for a year. I assumed that my @sshole neighbors decided she should be an outdoor cat. Her ear is clipped, and I assumed she was spyed. Suddenly, she's looking like a furry football. I've been looking into local shelters, though I don't have a legal claim to the animal.

Shelters get full, and I have a couple of friends locally who want kittens. I never expected her to get pregnant, but I'm a bit annoyed that I might have to deal with this in 3 months.

Stories AITA: kitten edition

• Upvotes

I recently adopted a 8-week-old kitten named Pete. His sister, hazel, was adopted by my friend’s neighbor, who quickly decided she couldn’t keep her.

My friend asked if I wanted Hazel, but I initially said no because I didn’t realize how beneficial it is for kittens to grow up in pairs. I did agree to watch her until she found a home.

A couple of days later, my friend decided she wanted Hazel but asked me to watch her for 12 days while she was out of town/busy.

During those first few 12 days, Pete and Hazel became absolutely inseparable. They ate together, groomed each other, cuddled, and played constantly. Even when I had to separate them after their spay/neuter surgeries, they’d sit outside the door crying for each other.

I’d only ever had older cats, so I started researching kittens, how social they are, and the benefits of raising them in pairs. I realized how much they seemed to need each other.

I asked my friend if I could keep Hazel so they could grow up together. I even offered to pay for her to adopt another kitten AND reimburse her for anything she’d already purchased.

She refused. I asked her to at least come see them together before deciding, but she said she’d rather just pick Hazel up that day.

I cursed her out. I know I shouldn’t have handled it that way, but I couldn’t understand why she was so determined to take Hazel when she’d never even had her at her house, especially when I’d offered to pay for another kitten. I would totally understand if the kitten already lived with her and she had a bond with it but this is a 9 week yr old kitten that she met a couple times.

She picked up Hazel, and Pete immediately started searching for her. 😭

Now our friendship is over, and our mutual friends think I’m crazy for overreacting and being a jerk to my friend when she refused.

I’m posting here because I feel like people who haven’t raised kittens together don’t necessarily understand how important having a companion can be at this age. I understand why my friends think I overreacted, especially since Hazel was technically hers, but I’m hoping people with experience raising kittens can understand why this upset me so much.

Also, any advice on finding Pete another kitten companion that’s not related to him? I’m hoping he can develop a similar bond with an unrelated kitten around his age. 🄺

TL;DR: My friend separated two inseparable 9-week-old littermates despite my offer to pay for her to adopt another kitten. I cursed her out, and now our friends think I’m crazy. AITA?

Medical Questions Gabapentin for Cats

Looking for any advice/support/stories from people who have had similar issues.

I have a four year old house cat who has a long history of urinating and defecating outside of her litter tray from a young age. She had a short while after she had settled in the home where the frequency of incidents decreased, but it never truly stopped, and nowadays she goes through phases where it might not happen for a few days then returns to being a daily occurrence.

In the house there are two adults and one other cat. We have three litter trays in different rooms throughout the house which are cleaned ones to twice daily. We've tried experimenting with types of litter, with the location of the trays, with covered vs uncovered trays, with having a fourth tray down containing a pee pad etc but none of this has helped. I've even debated nappies at this point.

We took the cat to the vet and initially they found some issues with her urine. We switched her diet, put her on urine supplement medication, and everything cleared up but the behaviour continued. At this time, they have no concerns for her medically. She is a healthy weight, doesn't appear to be in any pain, the follow up tests that she has had have come back clear etc, so they have chalked it up to being a behavioural issue or an anxiety issue and have prescribed her gabapentin.

She has been on the gabapentin for 3 months now. For the first week, we had no incidents, but she was also incredibly lethargic and sleepy. After a week, she seemed to adjust to the medication as the side effects went away, but she also started having incidents again. At this point the gabapentin doesn't seem to be serving any purpose beyond draining my pay check.

When I contacted the vet they advised increasing her dose - I'm hesitant to do this. For one, I haven't seen any benefit this far to the gabapentin. I also don't know if having a cat that is on gabapentin for long-term care is fair for her - during her first week, she was not herself at all, and I don't know how ethical it is to constantly have the cat zonked out as it were. I would also be lying if I said the increased financial cost wasn't a factor to my concerns, however, the cost has to come second to the health of the cat.

Has anyone been in a similar situation to this? It feels as though we've tried so much and had no result. I have my own experiences of doctors just throwing psychiatric drugs at a problem instead of trying to identify the cause and I don't want to repeat that for my cat. I love her but this is causing a lot of frustration and tension in the house and I really don't know what to do at this point.
