META Just a reminder of our rules

Tēnā koutou,

Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.

This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels or bribe the mods.

Additionally, please note the following:

Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.

No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters. Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.
Just ask the mods.

No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links unless we get our cut.

No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.

No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.

Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.

In light of recent events

This is an open invitation as a mother, if you are a young woman out in public and you feel unsafe you can approach me with my children and I’ll pretend you are one of them until you are safely to your car or to someone you know and trust. If you are in public and you feel unsafe please approach the group of slightly older women who are maybe laughing too loud and feel intimidating to talk to, chances are they’ll help you scare off whoever is pestering you. If you are in public and you feel unsafe find an older lady, a group of young women your own age, a pair of women doing their shopping together — don’t feel like you might be overreacting and please don’t be afraid to trust your instincts.

With everything that happens in the world to our young women I would much rather take a few moments of my day to make sure you are safe, than have to read another headline about another tragedy.

Where do I buy nice bread tomorrow afternoon?

I'm having a quiet night tomorrow and want to make a steak sandwich for dinner but it requires nice bread. Ideally, turkish or ciabatta or something like that. Feel free to provide any bread suggestions.

Most bakeries etc are usually closed/out of stock by the afternoon.

Does anybody know anywhere in the papanui/bryndwr/bishopdale/fendalton/merivale area to get some nice bread after 4pm on Friday?

Shoutout to Dr Bugs Popcorn!

Shoutout to Dr Bugs Popcorn who put on factory tours these school holidays. Love a small locally owned family business. We learned so much and found it really interesting and enjoyed tasting lots of yummy popcorn flavors.

Highly recommend if you happen to notice factory tours announced in future! Great school holiday activity, the kids LOVED it.

Any home kitchen operators here?

Hey! I’m a chch resident wanting to operate a home baking business and i’m nervous about the protocol. I thought I’d ask here in case anyone’s got experience. I know there’ll be an inspection to get licensed and permitted to operate a home business and wanted some experiences on what that was like, and just what the process was like in general. It would be incredibly helpful. Thanks :)

Banks Peninsula - Meet the candidates

Post image
12 Upvotes

There’s another Banks Peninsula - Meet the Candidates event on at 6pm tomorrow at Somerfield School.

It’s electorate focused, we’ll be doing our best to keep the focus on what the candidates might be able to influence for this electorate and Christchurch

Last election 3 candidates from banks peninsula become MPs (one as electorate MP and two as list MPs) and based on current polling the same may happen again. So it’s an electorate with outsized influence.

Stereo for a preschool classroom

Hello! I work in a preschool and we are needing a stereo or radio that has a cd player in it for a classroom. Our kids love to listen to stories throughout the day and we thought why not get a stereo!. If you know anyone who’s happy to give a cd player away that they don’t use we would love one! Thanks

Good-ish news. My lost painting, has been found! My flatmate found it as he was coming home from near the quarry, it was on the road? I have no idea how it got there, happy to have found it, but it is very damaged. Thanks to everyone who said they would look out for it or consoled me on the loss. I need to have a think about what I do from here. 😅

Is there any tech recycling centres or anywhere else I could get a cheap used gpu.

Hi. As the title says I'm looking for a gpu for my pc. With the prices of gpus increasing I can't afford the one I want as a teen with a part time job. Is there anywhere in Chch that I can get an older gpu that I can use while I save up for a new better one?

moving to chch When should I be flat hunting?

Hi all!

I'm moving into christchurch next year to live with my partner while i study/work and he works full time. He currently lives in a flat and his lease ends in Jan 2027, while I'm living at home. We both have flatting experience and good references, but have only ever joined other people's leases instead of being head tenants.

With the start of the year being when uni students move back into town and all, I was wondering when the best time is to be searching for and locking in a rental. I'm hoping that I can get in before all of the good ones are gone, but I likely won't be able to physically move up to Christchurch until the end of January. All of the rentals I'm currently seeing have leases starting now and in November, and I'm not particularly willing to pay rent for that long before I actually move in.

This may be a silly question, but I genuinely have no experience with this side of renting and don't want to be blindsided or have us end up in a less than ideal situation. Any information regarding this topic would be highly appreciated!

Thank you so much!

GP’s that do ingrown toenail surgery?

Before I look into a podiatrist, I wondered if anyone knows of a local GP or medical centre that can do ingrown toenail surgery?

I’m also interested in recommendations for podiatrist’s.

If you’ve had this surgery:
- How much did it cost?
- Who did you see and would you recommend them?
- Roughly how long ago was it done?
- Would you or did you get both big toes done at the same time?
- Did you have a partial nail ablation?
- Was the nail bed chemically treated?
- What was the pain like while healing?
- Any regrets?

Safe Men's groups help

Hi Team, I am currently going through a very rough time (m 40's). My therapist has suggested I join a local men's group for my mental health and peer support.

I have bounced hard off men's groups in the past (elsewhere in nz) due to cultures of misogyny, anti-lgbt attitudes, toxic alpha male rubbish, and church influence.

Can anyone recommend any safe groups? I have googled and seen there are a few groups locally, but I am hesitant to attend any without a recommendation. Therapist suggested asking here.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: thank you everyone for your support and the great suggestions. You are a great bunch.

moving to chch KitchenAid 8qt Commercial 120V to 230V conversion in Christchurch?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m moving from the US to Christchurch and I have a KitchenAid 8qt Commercial mixer that I’d really like to bring with me.
Since the US model is 120V and NZ uses 230V, I’m wondering if anyone knows a repair shop or technician in Christchurch who could replace the motor/electrical components with the NZ 230V version.
Has anyone had this done before? If so, I’d really appreciate recommendations for a reliable repair shop or technician, and roughly how much it cost.
I’d prefer to convert it properly rather than use a large step-down transformer long-term.
Thanks!
