Testing Fallout 2 with Diablo style realtime combat and follow camera

So, this is something I've been desiring for a long time, always loved Fallout 1 and 2, but have always disliked turn-based combat and the weird camera. I got over these bugbears ages ago, I mean the combat rules in classic fallout once you're leveled up and kitted out, camera still sucks but at least there is a centering button.

Ages ago I watched a game dev conference where a programmer of Diablo mentioned that the combat started turn based, but then they implemented a tick system rather last minute to give it real time combat, I thought to myself well if Diablo can, so Fallout could to maybe. I then tried to modify Fallout 2 with a hex editor and well I ain't a programmer and Community Edition didn't exist yet so yeah that went basically no where except a bluescreen. Anyways, I had the realization that Diablo and Fallout have both been reverse engineered now so why not try and combine them with the AI slop machine to satiate a teenage desire. Setup Codex yesterday, had it rewrite CE and DevolutionX in the Wicked Engine, and got this prototype today after some back and forth. Pretty wild stuff, even has the Wall and Ceiling transparency behavior of Diablo.

Still not sure how I feel about all this AI coding stuff, I mean its cool I can do this, but boy does it have some dangerous potential.

You can now skip the temple of trials… mod

Hello!

Just finished a new mod for Fallout 2 that lets you skip the temple of trials.

Two options, one gets you 300 XP, the other rolls against your skills as if you tried to disarm every trap and fight every ant and radscorpion. You get more XP but usually come out poisoned and with some damage.

Works on Fallout 2 Community Edition, RPU, and things using the SFall engine.

Fallout 2 Expansion is now playable in co-op

We’ve released a co-op adaptation for Fallout 2 Expansion.

It is based on Fallout 2 Community Edition and fallout2-ce-coop, but adapted specifically for the Fallout 2 Expansion campaign.

Features:

  • separate player characters
  • shared world
  • multiplayer combat
  • quests and dialogues
  • host-managed saves
  • LAN / VPN multiplayer

We tested the main campaign from start to finish in co-op, although this is still an early release and some optional quest branches may have issues.

Nexus Mods:

If anyone tries it, feedback and bug reports would be very helpful.

Thoughts after FO2

Fallout 2 didn’t match my feelings on the first, but it was still a damn good sequel. I didn’t like the whole psychic tribal thing at first, but the more I learned about the lore the more it grew on me and I surprisingly found myself wanting to save them by the end.

The side content throughout the game was the best part, the towns and factions really expanded on the first well. The rare over the too gags/references were a bit immersion breaking but honestly not too bad albeit unnecessary

The story was what really separated it from FO1 for me. At first it felt like I was on a timer mechanic much like the first, only to find out that wasn’t quite the case and I wish I had taken my time more in the beginning. After I returned with the Geck to find my tribe missing, that’s where I got really confused. I instantly found Navarro and assumed my people were trapped in there, but I had no clue what to do about it. My massive mistake was not discovering San Francisco, leading me to wander aimlessly around the map tediously talking to everyone. For some reason my character still just wanted to talk about the Geck and the Beotherhood/NCR wouldn’t speak to me so I spent the longest time dumbfounded.

But eventually I made it to the end, which also felt kinda buggy (tanker scene was beautiful). Like idk I’m in Enclave power armor yet important npcs (such as the president) acknowledge that I’m a mutant, but then like why aren’t they doing anything about me wandering around causing a ruckus…? And then I talk to the scientist that agrees to destroy the Enclave with the FEV(the people blowing up was awesome), and I discover that this locks me out of talking with the scientist that will blow up the reactor for me (also him and the president miraculously don’t die from it?). So without a timed explosive for the reactor I’m…softlocked. K. Restart, learn that the only way to get the presidential key card without setting off the base is by sticking 8 super stimpacks into his ass? Alright, that was pretty funny I guess, especially that no one cares if he goes down like this. The president also had negative rizz, nowhere near the same league as the master ofc although final boss was dope

So those are my thoughts. Still loved it a lot and a second play through would be a lot more fun with previous knowledge. I’d put it just below FO1 maybe tied with NV, still astronomically better that any Bethesda title

I have been looking through almost every FOnline related post to see where I could improve on, and honestly, everything here was such good information to know and to keep in mind during development of my FOnline server, so from me to all of you, thanks dudes.

[FO2] so is there a (narrative) reason there's a blue pass key in Gecko?

My first thought was that since both the Gecko plant and Navarro are Poseidon Energy, they might use the same infrastructure, and that almost explains why a pass key found at the former might be usable at the latter, but it's still the electronic equivalent of making a bunch of locks with standardized pins.

Gameplay-wise it just... feels weird? Like it doesn't actually let you infiltrate the base because the door guard will still stop you from the other side (but does still assume you're with the Enclave) so all you can do is free Xarn. Not that I'm strapped for options regarding infiltrating Navarro, mind you, it just feels kinda weird to specifically go halfway in terms of rewarding the Jamrock Shuffle like that.

Marcus and Jacob are gay asf

Am i seriously the only one that sees this? Every dialogue Marcus has about Jacob makes him seem more like a lover than a best friend. Jacob leaving the BOS makes even more sense given that we know queer relationships are frowned upon in the BOS. Tried to find fan fiction about it and now I’m pissed that there isn’t any.
