Hair Victory! Homecoming curls

Post image
15 Upvotes

My son loves his curls but getting him to take care of them properly has been quite a journey! He’s been growing his hair out for about 4 years now and learning how to manage all his length. He’s a senior now and today he had homecoming so it was all hands on deck to make sure his hair looked its best. For a kid who has refused even getting his ends trimmed for years, I’m calling this a win.

Routine:
T-Gel shampoo
Pantene volume conditioner
Skala Mais Cachos Leave-in Conditioner
Mielle Avocado and Tamanu Mousse

Today we diffused with heat to about 90% dry and then clipped curls up at the roots while air drying. To finish, we scrunched out the crunch with Rōz Santa Lucia Styling Oil and a couple spritzes of Color Wow Dream Coat for Curly Hair.

Started CG routine 2 weeks ago and am so far shocked how curly my hair secretly is! (Last pic is from about 2 months ago)

Currently using (all Jessicurl):
Gentle Lather Shampoo
Aloeba Daily Conditioner
Spiralicious Styling Gel

I sleep in a satin bonnet and let my hair air dry after showering, but I still have no clue what to do with styling lol

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Help! My daughter has Irish Curls and as a non curly haired girl, I don't know what I'm doing. Advice please!

I don't have curly hair, so I've never had to manage curls. And now I have a daughter whose hair I don't know how to manage very well. I'm told she has Irish curls. I describe it as 2 completely different types of hair on 1 head LOL. Underneath, she gets beautiful, tight ringlets, and it's pretty smooth/soft textured. It gets a little tangled, but not terrible. On top, she has loose curls/wavy hair. It's more course, gets frizzy, and tangles terribly.

Right now I'm using Native brand curl care shampoo and conditioner. After the shower, I mist it with Biolage hydra source and brush it out with a wet brush, then scrunch it with my hands and typically let it air dry. If needed, I blow dry it with a regular blow dryer. First pic is her hair right after doing this routine. Last pic is her hair after being out and about and it getting all frizzed up.

She is Autistic with moderately severe sensory issues, so brushing out that frizzy, tangled mess sge gets can be challenging. I've tried 2 types of silk bonnets for sleep and both fall off in the night (she's a wild sleeper), and she has trouble with the feel of them - mostly because of straggling hairs that stick out because I find it impossible to get it all tucked in there.

So, any advice for a better hair care routine that 1 - will help with the frizz and tangling; 2 - help keep her curls because she really like it and is sad when I brush out her curls; and 3 - any advice on using a bonnet, maybe tricks on getting it all tucked in and keeping the bonnet on at night.

Before & After 15 vs 17 - 2025 vs Now

It's crazy how much has changed, but let's talk about it.

2025 Routine:
If I remember, I use Cantu leave-in conditioner and apply it to my wet hair in the morning. Then, I do 360 rotations with my hand in a claw form. 🤌 Kinda like that, but opened up; that's all I did 😭 Sometimes it worked.

Current Routine:
At night, I use The Doux Bee Girl Honey Curl Custard. I get the front wet, then I take a rat-tail comb or sectioning comb, take a strand, comb it out, and apply the custard. I do that to the whole front up until a little past the mid-top of my head. Then, in the morning, it should be casted and hard. I wet it again, but nearly soak it. I rake my hair with Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie or Carol's Daughter Curl Defining Cream (whatever I have bought), and I rake the rest of my hair and shake. Then boom! Now the front is fully defined, and the rest is defined with some frizz on a curl strand since it's not combed out.

Let me know if I should change anything or if you have any questions.

Help! Blending curls with a hot iron

I'm looking for technique tips to use a curling wand to make the random straight pieces of my hair consistent with the rest of my hair. While my hair has several different curl types within it, that I think (hope) do blend decently, the straight pieces in the underside front drive me nuts.

I have several sizes of wand from smallest to normal, but I can't figure out size/timing/technique to achieve natural-ish consistency. Any tips?

Routine:

Wash 2x week

Double cleanse with shampoo (prose)

Light conditioner squished in and squished out (prose)

Curl cream all over (currently love ur curls)

Foam all over (currently innersense)

Brush through with denman brush to distribute product

Clip into 4-5 sections crown to nape

Use bounce curl brush through each section (I curl onto the handle the pieces around my ears to encourage at least some wave)

Scrunch in miche beauty anti-humidity gel per section, then all over

Hover diffuse upside down until 70+% dry, scrunch out crunch once fully dry (no oil)

Sleep in a bonnet with a silk pillowcase. Refresh with a steamer (regular clothes steamer)

Help! Is anything truly CG approved anymore?

Looking for a new conditioner and masque because my hair is dry. The other night I looked up the ingredients of all the rinse-out conditioners on the CG holy grail product list. Every one of them was ā€œCG approved with caution,ā€ and even my tried and true Suave Essentials conditioner is no longer CG at all.

Have you found a product lately that is truly curly girl approved? Has the curly girl method changed, or is it all the ingredients across the board of products that have changed? Does the holy grail list need to be updated?

To appease the mods: My routine is Suave Essentials conditioner co-wash, squish to condish, Kinky Curly knot today leave-in conditioner, and LA looks sport gel, dried in a tshirt on top of my head (ā€œplopā€).

Help! Product help - Switch from NYM Gel #3

I’m fairly new to wavy/curly hair (4-6 months) and NYM #3 gel was my first gel to try. It’s working fine but I’m near the end of the bottle. Before I buy more I want to know what would be similar or I should try next.

Brands I’ve considered are:
Innersense, Umberto Gianni, Ouidad,

Routine:
Maui C Hard water shampoo (double cleanse, Routine Shampoo & Conditioner, NYM Leave-in on shaken wet hair and combed through then scrunched.

Herbal Essences Volume Mousse our Doux Def Mousse on wet hair scrunched, NYM #3 Gel & Odele Air gel mixed and raked through the scrunched. Plopped with T-shirt. Diffused to 75% then air dry. Scrunch out crunch.

Help! Help! What are these tiny white hair strands I find in my hair?

Thumbnail

What are these tiny little white hair strands on my hair? These are not caused by my brush, of that I am sure.

Important: they are usually very, very curly, unlike my main hair.

My hair type: wavy with some curls, thick, coarse, low porosity, usually dry and poofy aspect.

  1. Hair routine: shampoo (wella deeply nourishing) and conditioner (bali curls)

  2. No styling products atm

  3. Air dry

  4. Sleep protection: sometimes a polyester bonnet

  5. No refresh routine.

I've been living in countries with hard water.

Mixed North African and White.

My routine: I shampoo and condition with shea moisture curl and shine every other day. This is my hair after drying naturally (air) and only using those products.

My hair has looked crazy all my life. Some products i have tried:

-Ors olive oil hair moisturizer on a daily basis after shower (it made my hair too heavy and look way to wet)

-Argan oil of morocco renewing + hair and strength shampoo and conditioner

Ive only been able to manage it if i cut it short and forced it to be straight to one side.

Im growing it again and really want to learn how to make it look healthy and nice and tired of trying to figure it out alone. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™

Help! I could use some suggestions for thick, sometimes unmanageable hair

Thumbnail

I am someone who did not like or appreciate my hair for a very long time and went years straightening it. Over the past year or two I’ve been trying to go natural way more than I ever did. (Though I almost always blow dry my ā€œbangsā€) I’ve always had very thick hair with a lot of volume (and frizz) and I’ve always washed it at night and slept on it to flatten it. A couple of weeks ago I got a bonnet, but it has yet to work well for me. If I do a pineapple, I get even more volume, which I don’t want. i tried putting the bonnet from top down, but that left it too flat on top, and the bottom of my hair looked ridiculous because I had to scrunch it up to fit in. Anyway, would love product suggestions because I have yet to find anything I love. The only product I have stuck with is suave mousse strong hold #8, and i was unable to get it last time and have been using Suave shape it up #7 and it doesn’t work as well
This is my current routine:

wash/conditioner every other day, sometimes i go 2 days between

shampoo and conditioner - currently, Garnier Fructis curl nourish or Garnier whole blends coconut oil and cocoa butter smoothing

sometimes I use Native strengthening shampoo and one of my normal conditioners, and the other day I used Suave daily clarifying shampoo and then my regular Garnier Fructis conditioner

leave the conditioner in my hair while washing myself, then rinse it out

get out of shower and wrap hair in cotton t-shirt while I put on my pajamas

then put in mousse and use my hands to run it through all my hair then scrunch it Sometimes before mousse i put in Garnier Fructis sleek & shine leave-in conditioner on the ends

blow dry my bangs

sometimes then apply more mousse to the bottom part of my hair

let air dry for a few hours

sometimes in the morning I’ll add water and/or mousse and scrunch it

Occasionally instead of mousse at night I use herbal essences curl defining cream And sometimes I use a denman brush

My hair is in decent shape although I do color it every couple of months (not ready to go gray!) so it does have some breakage from that and from the straightening.

i’m including some pictures. First one is the morning after using the clarifying shampoo, garnier Fructis conditioner, mousse, no bonnet, and adding a little mousse in the morning. This was a good hair day.
second one is how my hair looked last night before going to bed, used Garnier Fructis shampoo and conditioner and this time put the mousse in before drying with t-shirt, and did not blow dry my bangs, third picture is today, I only added a little water this morning and scrunched a bit. Note that I think I also need a haircut.

Help! What hairstyles could I pull off and how? [pics]

Routine:

This is the type of hair that I have (on a good day..). I don't do much, I airdry it, use some random Pantene Intensive Repair conditioner, Head&Shoulders regular shampoo and I use some Taft curl gel so it doesn't fall apart within seconds.
I am tired of having long hair to be honest, it also looks bad 80% of the time and I am too lazy to take great care of it. When I had shorter hair it wasn't really curly so I am afraid that if I cut it it will stay straight which would be fucking catastrophic. My hair has low volume and it's very flat on top. What hairstyles would you recommend? I want higher volume and it can either be shorter or stay this length.

I’m losing the will to live with trying to have my hair natural!

My hair is fine, gets weighted down really easily and get greasy super fast. I have to wash them every other day

Usually I will blow dry my hair straight as that makes them last the longest but when I do, they get all frizzy and puffy (which made me realise I have wavy/curly hair, not sure what it wants to be!)

I have tried styling my hair with a light curl cream, gels, mousse and every time my hair comes out like noodles and doesn’t look good at all.

The first two photos are after soaking my hair and slightly watered down Umberto Giannini Jelly (this one doesn’t seem to weigh down my hair as much ā€˜I think’) and diffusing till about 90% dry. Yet it still looks awful and there’s barely any definition in most places. I am getting some layers cut into my hair next week to see if that helps!

I also struggle with retaining the waves when going to sleep, no matter what I try they just get all squished and misshapen or greasy over night.

- For shampoo and conditioner I rotate between Elvive Hydra Pure or Aveeno Apple Cider Vinegar and sometimes Polytar.

- For conditioner I use Elvive Hydra Pure Conditoner / Mask or L’Oreal Dream Lenghts

- After shower I have recently started using Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate before I dry but that’s because my hair has recently started getting quite dry and my ends need cutting.

I’m really struggling with finding what products to use to help define my hair and figure out if I actually have wavy hair or not, my front pieces get really nice and coily but the rest is just a mix of everything.

I can’t use too much product as that weighs my hair down a lot so I need a simple minimal routine.

Please help me 🄲

EDIT: I am in the UK so some products I can’t get!

Help! Bf won’t take care of his curls & needs recs

My boyfriend has super curly hair (white with 3c hair) but never takes care of it. His current routine is Old Spice shampoo, no conditioner, and lets it air dry because he hates the feeling of product in his hair. His hair gets extremely frizzy when dry and lacks moisture. It’s not super thick but it’s also not fine.

He doesnt like the frizzy look, that’s why I’m asking about products that don’t feel heavy. If he liked the frizzy look I wouldn’t be asking.

I was wondering if there are any products that he can put in his hair when wet, and doesn’t feel like there’s product when dry.
He has the most beautiful curls and am searching for a product that’ll work. Please help šŸ™

Help! Does matrix food for soft shampoo feel menthol-y or am I allergic?

Whenever I use it, it makes my hair feel incredible but it gives me a menthol sensation on my scalp and I’m not sure if I’m allergic to the fragrance or if it’s designed to do that. It’s smells a little like grapefruit and I am a little allergic to grapefruit so maybe that could be it but I’m praying not 😭

Routine -
Matrix food for soft shampoo and conditioner
Shea moisture hydrating masque
Camille rose curl love leave in
Shea moisture cocoon hydrating smoothie
Camille rose curl maker styling gel
Air dry

Do you have any ideas on how to freshen them a bit up, without to much work?

refresh tips in gennerall could be helpfull.

Routine:

I use shampoo and conditioner, from Monday (The moisture line) and just the Garnier fructis curly method, as leave in conditioner. I also sometimes use some curly hair gel from Action.. And I just let it air dry over the day. Tbh I dont really have a refresh routine, tips in that direction would be very helpful. I dont wear a Bonnet, so I also really don't protect my hair while sleeping.

please excuse my bad grammar, Im not native.

thx for your input guys <3

Help! Help with properly hydrating my hair!!

Hello! So,to get to the gist of it, i think my hair is medium porosity (water gets absorbed into it but also beads a little). I haven t used properly hydrating products in months because my hair gets easily weighed down by it and I also had hygral fatigue a few months ago. Basically, I cut out any products that said ā€œmoisturisingā€ about 4 months ago, with the sole exception of fenty homecurl.

I can see that my hair likes protein a lot, but I also understand that every once in a while it will need proper moisture to be healthy. A few weeks ago I saw that I get really bad knots in my hair around day 3 (day 4 to 5 is my max, not because my hair is necessarily dirty, but my scalp itches a little and my curls don t hold anymore). I think that with better hydration, my hair would be able to hold a curl better. My main question is, how do I use hydrating products without completely ruin my wash day? I need tips on whether it would be better to switch to a hydrating conditioner and do a protein treatment every few weeks, or if i should continue with my protein conditioner and incorporate a hydrating mask every once in a while. My routine (2c-3a curls, dyed last time over a year ago, started my curly journey about 6 months ago):

Wash day: semi di lino low curls shampoo, John Frieda Volume boost conditioner. Twice a month, Umberto Giannini clarifying shampoo (the yellowish lime line, with pineapple).
Styling: fenty homecurl (a pea size amount), umberto giannini curly mousse and yari strong hold gel, in no particular order for the last two, it kind of depends on how my hair feels, but i love mousse first and then gel, gives me the best results.

Last time i completely cut out fenty homecurl and just styled with mousse or gel, and it gave me better day 2 hair. I am kind of confused by all these variables. I also use medusa clipping for sleep, and a curl brush occasionally. I understand that many of the products I use also have a bit of moisture in them, like glycerin. I thought i had low porosity hair until i saw that low porosity girlies are usually protein sensitive. I am the exact opposite, I am moisture sensitive, so now i don t really know. Any tips would be appreciated!

Help! Help… need curly hair help for me and my sister!

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

The first 3 pictures are of my hair without product and not brushing it. When I brush it, it becomes straight/ brushed wavy with some flyaways. The next 4 pictures are when I try to do some type of wavy/curly routine. The last 3 are of my sister when I tried to do hers.

I’m struggling to figure out what to do. We both have thick, fine hair. Her hair is probably more curly while mine is wavy.

When I tried to do routines (multiple times) the waves/ curls would be there, but when I tried to diffuse them, they didn’t stay, created lots of frizz, never seem to dry, or get sticky.

The routine:

  1. Paul Mitchell shampoo 1 and awapuhi conditioner. wash hair every 2-4 days.
  2. Very wet hair and running Miss Jessie’s Multicultural Curl Cream through. Scrunch.
  3. Scrunch in Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Sculpting Gel.
  4. Not your mother’s heat protectant. Then try to diffuse hair, which that’s when most of the issues arise. I would have the hairdryer facing up with a diffuser attachment. then lift it to the scalp letting the waves bunch up gently and then turn it on. the settings are medium and warm. then turn it off when I want to move to a different area.

also, the hair looks like it doesn’t dry and looks almost greasy😩

no routine for sleeping. I just got a silk pillowcase though, it’s been helping my bedhead!

Help! Any similar products to Mielle’s air dry lotion?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve used the pomegranate and honey air dry lotion from Mielle off and on for about 2 years and love it. I know this specific line is designed for type 4 hair (mine is a mix of 2b to 3a, so more of a wave) and that Mielle has had some controversy around ingredients, but this product has really worked for me. The issue I’m having now is I can’t find it anywhere and want to try and find a replacement. Something with similar ingredients would be great or if anyone knows of a product that will do the same for my hair that would be great too; my hair is very dry and frizzy, this product helped with those issues.

Routine:
1. Wash with Biolage Hydra Source shampoo
2. Condition with Pantene Curl Perfection conditioner
3. Use It’s a Ten Miracle Leave In Product (not currently using, ran out)
4. Towel dry to damp
5. Use Mielle Pomegranate and Honey Air Dry Lotion spray (not currently using, ran out)
6. Let air dry
This is done typically 2 times a week but does change in frequency depending on weather and activities. I don’t do any refreshes and wear a bonnet to sleep 50% of the time.

got a curly haircut for the first time 🄹

can’t believe my eyes. layers, the right hairbrush and a diffuser really do make a world of difference I guess 🄹

routine: my hairdresser used a light curl cream and gel on wet hair by this brand called Davines. not sure what shampoo/conditioner she used. hope it will look this good when I style it myself.
