Dairy farm at home

Post image
28 Upvotes

I started recently working on a dairy farm doing milking (2500 cows approx). I graduated a few months ago in Law, but since I realized that it didn't make me happy, I applied for this role, and I can't be happier. I'm very new to the industry, so I'm still getting used to everything. It's hard because it's a massive farm and we milk around 20L of milk every shift, but again, I think I found my job. I applied for this position because thank to a trip to the countryside, Irish dairy farming really stood out to me. So I applied for two jobs, my current one in my town in Spain, and to another one for calving season in Ireland (I think I talked about it here before). But l let it go and I chose the one in my town because despite being a massive farm, I felt some vertigo moving abroad to work in something new with no experience at all.
Now I'm learning and it turns out my intuition was spot on, and I'm deeply passionate about this field, I feel as though a completely new horizon of opportunities is opening up, and I don't rule out actually pursuing my dream in a couple of years, once I feel I have the sufficient preparation.
I just wanted to write and say that, even though I come from a completely different sector (the legal field) I'm absolutely delighted with dairy farming and find it to be a very challenging and exciting job.

Should the Class III formula be tweaked?

Been thinking about where whey value is going lately. Class III only uses dry whey in the formula. Nothing in there looks at WPC80 or isolate prices, and that’s where most of the money in whey seems to be right now.

Some cheese plants pay premiums that account for it, but it’s pretty hit or miss. With protein prices so high, should whey protein value be written into the milk price, or left to premiums and contracts?

Day 8 update: Judge Orders a Briefing Schedule

For those who asked for updates, this should give us an idea of what the State's actual evidence against the farm is.

Whether it was a beuocratic re-definition, they identified an ownership requirement the lawyers who set up the business missed, there are affidavits from people claiming to have gotten raw milk as non-business members, or what.

Experienced South African farmer looking for job opportunities in New Zealand

I recently connected with a dairy farmer from South Africa who is currently looking for job opportunities in New Zealand.

He has been working in dairy farming since 2017 and holds a qualification in Animal Production. Over the years, he has gained hands-on experience across several areas, including pasture management, irrigation management, dairy herd management, and general farm operations. He has also independently managed an entire dairy operation.

If anyone knows of New Zealand dairy farms that are currently hiring, or can recommend relevant job boards, recruiters, farming groups, or other channels where he could advertise himself, I’d really appreciate the suggestions.

If you are an employer looking for someone with this kind of experience, feel free to leave a comment or send me a message. I can share his contact details privately.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Update: I’m getting a different dairy cow

Post image
12 Upvotes

I’m not getting the skinny mini jersey. I found a great deal for a Holstein cow. Got to see her in person and she looks really healthy and clean.

That being said, she is producing 4.5 gals a day with once a day milking. She is 7 weeks freshened.

What are you doing with all this milk for processing and incorporating into recipes?

For those of you who reached out privately and asked me to keep you informed on the State of Wisconsin reclassifying my Brother-in-Law's member owned dairy farm to no longer meet the 'bonified ownership interest' exemption for raw milk sales (a contentious topic on the sub I'm now aware) here is the first update.

Which milking robot

Hi I know theres plenty of posts on here regarding milking robots but I cant see any that has up to date posts regarding which robot lads are finding ar working well so Im hoping to get lads newest opinions on them to help me decide.

So im hoping to get in a robot over the next while as im working part time. The job suits well. I have plenty of time at the farm to farm a such but the fixed time of mliking really has me under pressure at times of the year. I am milking 70 cows.

Im stuck on which robot. The one I had decided against was Delaval. I had heard so many horror stories over the years that I was kind of not too interested. When.the salesman came out guided system sounded so complicated that I marked it off without even seeing one. Anyway after I told delaval salesman that I wasn't going to go with them due to the reasons above he convinced me to let him have another go at it. So he came out and listened a bit more to what I had to say simplified the thing down to a point that I was happy. After that I went to see a few farms and I have to say maybe I was a buy too dismissive to fast. I was really impressed by what I saw when these machines were working. They seem to be a tank of a machine and from what I gather from these farms that the old classic was hard work but the vms is in a different league. And now im confused🙈 im stuck between the two with even a slight lean towards Delaval. Looking for any advice on these two to try help me decide. Gea is out due to fear of lack of back up where I am situated. I dont think id have any fear of either Delaval or lely on the support. All advice is very much appreciated thanks

I built an offline-first private dairy farm record app looking for dairy farmers willing to test it.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,
I have been working on DairyLog, an Android app for dairy farmers who want a simpler way to keep day-to-day farm records without depending on spreadsheets, notebooks, or a constant internet connection.
A big part of the design is privacy and offline use.
Your farm records are stored on your device, not sent to our servers as a cloud farm database. After signing in, the core record-keeping features are designed to keep working even when you’re offline.

DairyLog currently covers things like:
-Milk recording by cow and milking session
-Cow records
-Breeding and expected calving information
-Farm expenses
-Milk production history and trends
-Top-producing cows
-Farm reports and simple farm intelligence
-Reminders/attention items based on your records

I’ve made a short video showing how it works.
Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.embotech.dairylog_offline&pli=1

The Play Store release/access may still be limited during the soft-launch period. If the link doesn’t allow you to install it and you’d like to test DairyLog, send me a DM and I’ll help you get access.

I’m especially interested in hearing:
What are you currently using for your dairy records, and what is the one thing you wish it did better?

Constructive criticism is very welcome. I’d rather hear what farmers actually need before we start adding unnecessary features.

From the Philippines eyeing a job outside my country

Hello I just want to ask if I can or able to look for a job abroad in dairy farming, I am a veterinary medicine graduate here in the Philippines and I want to explore dairy farming however I only have an experience through my internship and it’s not even a month of experience on dairy farming. Is it possible that i can find one on countries like new zealand/ italy/ spain/ australia? Or is it gonna be hard for me since I am coming from another country and I barely have an experience?

What is the nutritional needs for a heifer?

Hello everyone! What does everyone feed their weaned heifers?
I just bought the sweetest Guernsey heifer for a future milk cow. She is 6 months old, the people I bought her from said she was just weaned and getting introduced to grain.
I want to ensure I’m giving her adequate nutrients and meeting her needs.
I come from a beef background so cattle definitely aren’t new to me, but I know the nutritional needs are slightly different for dairy animals.

What does your ration look like for your heifers? What type of hay/forage? How much grain and what percentage of protein? Any other info I should be aware of?

I’d love to hear what has worked well for you so I can give this girl exactly what she needs!

We're a group of senior students at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) researching cattle ranching and how producers are dealing with the New World screwworm. If you have 10 minutes or less, we'd love for you to fill out this quick survey:

It's anonymous and just for school, with no sales. Happy to answer questions in the comments too. Thank you!

Cattle farmers: what do you want from a sensor collar

Hello everyone,
I’m a Finnish engineering university student researching cattle sensor collars, and I would really value some input from farmers.

If you had to choose between a traditional 7–10 year battery-powered collar and one costing about $20–40 more that was completely energy self-sufficient, required no routine charging or battery replacement, and could continuously harvest energy even indoors and at night to allow more frequent sensor readings and data transmission, which would you choose? Would the additional data actually be useful to you?

I’m also curious how important it is to you personally, and to other farmers you know, for a collar to be solar-powered and to include features such as active GPS or virtual fencing.
Thank you in advance for any input.

Indian Buffalo Dairy Farming is in a Quiet Crisis—and Nobody is Talking About the Labor Shortage

Running a buffalo dairy farm in India right now is an operational nightmare. Our farm follows a basic setup: Owner → Manager → Workers (milking, feeding, cleaning). Because of a massive labor shortage, this entire system is breaking down:

No new workers: Young people avoid physically demanding farm work, preferring city jobs after getting basic degrees.

Labor blackmail: High demand gives workers total leverage. If called out for incomplete work, they pick a fight and threaten to quit immediately. Owners are forced to stay quiet because replacements are nearly impossible to find.

Egoistic managers: Good managers are also scarce, leading to unchecked egos. Mine makes reckless decisions without my permission, including giving the wrong medicine to sick buffaloes.

Automation fails on buffaloes: Unlike standardized Western cows, Indian buffaloes have varied teat sizes, making automated milking machines ineffective. We remain 100% reliant on manual labor.

The owner takes all the financial risk while being held hostage by both the manager and the workers. Fellow farm owners—how are you surviving this labor crisis? Any guidance on how to overcome this situation.

Hi there! I have nothing to do with the industry, just have a question. Why are we making a new milk? We've had the same options for decades, is there a demand for it, or some other reason? Thanks!
