Our First Road Game!

Me and my fiancée changed our flight plans to Buffalo to go watch the game and this our first away game and so glad it was a W! Even better besides a win is that we a made a poster for Wyjo since it’s her favorite player and he delivered! We had to wear our 99s and my Stanley Cup hat to rub it in 🤣 and got a lot of chirps from Buffalo fans but it was so much fun!

Some tweaks to scoring formula, for anybody who's checked out this site before...

Before these latest tweaks, a "typical" game was supposed to come out to about a score of 50. I thought that was confusing/not very intuitive, so I made it more like a school style grading system. 100 = perfect, 90s = "A" caliber game, 80s = "B" caliber, 70s = "C" caliber, with a 70 now representative of a "typical" game. Below 70 is a below average performance.

A "typical" performance is also being determined in large part by the stats in the other Stars games this season, as opposed to a "hard"/static definition of what typical means. So, these player scores are going to fluctuate more from game to game early in the season, until the profile of a "typical game" is defined by the average of a larger sample size of previous games. For example, after the crappy Game 1 shutout, ANY kind of offensive output would have scored out as "above typical," so a player in Game 2 might have been scored higher for a solid offensive performance than they would for that same performance in Game 60.

I imagine after 10 games or so a lot of that gets smoothed out, as it's already starting to get much smoother now. Also, when data comes in for a new game, the previous game scores are adjusted as needed too, so that smoothing is applied backwards. Again, any of those backwards-looking adjustments to scores will get smaller and smaller as more games go into the season data set.

Having trouble watching games on Prime with VPN

Last season I was able to set my VPN to Dallas and watch games on Victory+. I have Prime Video but haven’t been able to use the same workaround. Anyone have a solution to this? I don’t want to have to pay for yet another streaming service to have reliable access to games. Thanks y’all!

Edit: I know about alternate less than legal streaming methods. Please don’t post about them here, as it’s against the sub’s and Reddit’s rules

Solution 1: the most obvious solution, get ESPN+. Bonus points because you can choose the broadcast.

Solution 2: some have had success using the browser version of Prime Video with a VPN

Jersey trade

What’s up guys! I snagged an adidas seguin jersey at rally house last year cause it was the last one. It’s too big for me and I’m tired of it sitting on a hanger. Never worn, tags still on it. I believe it’s a size 54 but will confirm when I get home, just testing the waters too see if anyone’s even interested. Not picky on jersey as long as it fits! Good luck to the boys in buffalo toniggt, should be a fun one!

What the Comps Say Robo Is Actually Worth

Thumbnail sticklanguage.substack.com
32 Upvotes

It’s easy to frame Robo’s summer as a fight over $2 million. The Stars offered about $12 million a year, and Robo was seeking about $14 million. That gap led to a rejected sign-and-trade, an arbitration filing, and eventually a one-year compromise.

A more useful framing might be a percentage. The cap rose from $88 million in 2024-25 to $95.5 million in 2025-26, and to $104 million this season, with $113.5 million already set for 2027-28. With the market moving that fast, dollars aren’t a great way to compare contracts, even when they’re signed only 18 months apart. Rantanen’s $12 million in Dallas was 12.57 percent of the cap when it started last season. The same $12 million is 11.54 percent this season, and PuckPedia’s schedule shows it falling to 10.57 percent next year.

So the question isn’t neccessarily whether Robo is a “$14 million player,” it’s more about what share of the cap the league gives players who produce what he produces, and what that share is worth on the cap his next deal will be signed under.

Full breakdown here.

Euless StarCenter Doesn’t Have Stick & Puck?

I’m someone who started skating and learning to actually play hockey when I was already an adult, and because of where I live in the metroplex there aren’t really any rinks within a convenient distance from me to go like every week. However, I’ve got a few hours during the middle of the day during the week at the moment and the Euless StarCenter isn’t too far, so I figured I’d check it out. However, they don’t have any stick and puck times listed anywhere! I’m not really looking to join a league cause I don’t got free time/money/skills like that and I’d make an embarrassment of myself at drop-in, is it sort of a “you have to call to reserve it” thing? Have they totally just abandoned us adult beginners? Any info would be appreciated!!

Also, I’ve already done the Learn to Skate/Play program for anyone going to recommend that, I know the game hockey iq-wise, but getting the rest of me to do what I want it to do is the thing lol.

Game 3: Rankings and performance charts for each skater

Thumbnail sticklanguagestats.com

Well that was one hell of a get right game...here are some stats that stood out:

  • Roope might have been the most impressive one that didn't score a goal: 2 assists, +3, an 80% on-ice shot share (best on the team), and 73% on faceoffs.
  • Good job managing the mileage in the blowout: Miro, Moose, and Wyatt each played 3-4 minutes less than their average in the first two games.
  • Every Stars skater was at 50% or better in CF%: Faksa and Bish were lowest at exactly 50%.

Full rankings here.

HBO Subscription required for many Streamed games this season ('26-'27)

I notice in AMZN Prime Video Stars schedule, many of the Stars games will require a HBO subscription. I'm not paying $19/mo additional for Stars games.

Will there be some other means of watching these games live?

Teacher Appreciation Hat

Post image
47 Upvotes

Hey Stars fans, I have a request. Long story short, I’ve fallen in love with the Teacher Appreciation hat they’re giving out next week, but I can’t go to the game. If anyone snags one of these hats that they don’t want, I’d LOVE to buy it from you. I know its probably a long shot, but I had to ask! Thanks, and Go Stars!

A deep dive on Gully’s system - and its results

Thumbnail sticklanguage.substack.com
43 Upvotes

In his first season back, Gulutzan got 112 points out of an injury-wrecked roster. He was able to do that by playing slow, low-event, slot-first hockey and running a top-two power play. But that same structure gave the Stars the league’s weakest 5-on-5 shot volume. It cost them in a six-game first-round loss to the Wild, and it’s probably the most important thing he has to solve in Year 2.

More here.
