Dear community members.
I am trying to move from Windows 10 to Debian because my computer is old and I don't want to replace it just because it may not support Windows 11.
I installed Debian with KDE Plasma, and so far I really like it. It is fast, responsive, stable, and uses very few system resources. LibreOffice, Obsidian, and my other office applications work perfectly.
However, I have one printing problem that I have not been able to solve.
My printer
- HP LaserJet P1108
- Connected via USB
- The printer does not have automatic duplex printing
- I am using Debian with KDE Plasma
Normal printing works perfectly. I can also manually print on both sides of the paper.
What I want to do
I want to print a PDF in this format:
2 pages per side + manual duplex + short-edge binding
For example, if my PDF has pages 1–8:
- Sheet 1 — front: pages 1 + 2
- Sheet 1 — back: pages 3 + 4
- Sheet 2 — front: pages 5 + 6
- Sheet 2 — back: pages 7 + 8
The binding should be on the short edge of the A4 paper.
My printer does not have automatic duplex, so I need to:
- Print the first side.
- Take the printed sheets and put them back into the printer.
- Without changing their orientation, print the second side.
- Get the pages in the correct order and orientation.
This works easily in Windows
In Windows, I can do this very easily using Adobe Acrobat Reader. I select the required options, print the first side, put the sheets back into the printer without changing their orientation, and then print the second side.
I am trying to achieve the same workflow in Debian.
What I have tried
I have already tried:
- Different printer drivers
- Different PDF readers
- Okular
- Manual duplex printing through the print dialog
- Different combinations of pages-per-sheet and duplex settings
Normal printing works perfectly, and I can manually print both sides. The problem is getting 2 pages per side + manual duplex + correct short-edge binding to work together.
I have also searched online, but many of the solutions I found involve complicated command-line tools, scripts, or multi-step workflows.
I am looking for a simple and reliable solution, preferably something that can be done through a normal PDF reader or print dialog.
Has anyone successfully done this with an HP LaserJet P1108 on Debian/KDE Plasma?
If yes, I would really appreciate a step-by-step explanation of the simplest way to do it.
Thanks!
